- Joint press conference by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte with Alexander Stubb, President of Finland, 8 October 2024.
🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
President Stubb, dear Alex,
It’s great to welcome you here at NATO Headquarters.
And you are the first Allied leader I have the honour to welcome here as NATO Secretary General.
It’s further proof of Finland's seamless integration into the NATO family.
Since Finland became a NATO Ally eighteen months ago, the Alliance has become stronger and Finland has become safer.
Finland has highly-capable military forces and cutting-edge capabilities.
You are investing more than 2% of GDP in defence.
I welcome that you will host a new NATO battlegroup, to deter any aggression.
And a new headquarters to lead NATO land operations in the region.
All these efforts enhance our defences along the eastern flank and in the High North.
Today, we discussed further strengthening our deterrence and defence.
Over the past decade, NATO has carried out the biggest reinforcement of our collective defence in a generation.
With more forces, and at higher readiness.
We both agree that NATO must go further and faster.
We need more, better equipped forces;
A more robust transatlantic defence industry;
Increased defence production capacity;
Greater investment in innovation; and
Secure supply chains.
Allies are already stepping up, with plans to acquire thousands of air defence and artillery systems;
Many hundreds of modern aircraft, mostly 5th generation F-35s;
As well as substantial high-end capabilities.
But to do more, we must spend more.
To reach our capability targets, 2% clearly will not be enough.
We also addressed Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, where I made my first ever visit as Secretary General just last week.
NATO must and will do more to help Ukraine.
Russia continues to carry out massive strikes against Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure.
Ukraine could be facing its toughest winter since the full-scale invasion began,
I pay tribute to the resilience and the bravery of the Ukrainian people and their armed forces.
NATO Allies are providing almost all military support to Ukraine.
This is vital for Ukraine’s stability and ability to stay in the fight.
And I will be at Ramstein, together with Alex Stubb, at the table at Ukraine Defence Contact Group to press for more aid.
I welcome Finland's continuous support to Ukraine.
You have delivered a significant amount of support. Over 2 billion euros in military aid.
What Finland is doing helps save lives.
And the more military support we give, the faster this war will end.
President Stubb and I also discussed Russia’s ongoing campaign of malign activities on Allied territory.
And in this regard, I welcome the European Union’s new sanctions regime targeting hybrid threats.
In an unpredictable world we stand together to defend our shared values and democratic systems.
Dear Alex,
Thank you for your steadfast commitment to our transatlantic Alliance.
I look forward to continuing to work together.

NATO needs Finland's membership.
Yes indeed ua-cam.com/video/Nn7ojLa8WvE/v-deo.html
and Finland needs NATO. We are a team. Is working both ways.
@@Eduard.Popa. The guy you replied to might be a bot / troll.
@@tacticalsapper `probably not bc the account is 6 years old
@@tacticalsapper it's not trolling when it's on topic and true. Finland is a huge asset to NATO in multiple areas. They are the knife on Putin's throat that NATO has been missing. It's time to act now that the alliance is stronger than ever before.
Love from Poland brothers! 🇵🇱 🇫🇮
7:21 True words from Stubb. Keep in mind that Finland's military, since the end of WW2, has always prepared itself for an incoming aggression from Russia.
On one hand, Finland has always tried to keep good relations through diplomacy to all its neighboring countries, but they were not naive, knowing exactly that the threat was coming from the East and not from the West. That's why they have build alliances with their Nordic partners, constructed bunkers on their eastern border and even developed weapons that have the primary purpose to defend themselves against a possible armed conflict against Russia. Finland is for sure a security provider and a huge enrichment for the entire NATO. We are glad to have you by our side!
This Finland's doctrine where the clear danger comes from the east wasn't established during cold war or during WWII. It goes centuries before that. Finland has been attacked by Russia a dozen times in the last thousand or so years. Being cautious and wary with Russia is a thousand year doctrine.
That's true. The US Senator Tom Cotton said it well: "Finland has a 900,000-man reserve it can draw on in time of crisis and can field an army of 280,000 when fully mobilized; which means Finland’s reserves are larger than the reserves of France, Germany, and Italy-combined. Finland has one of the strongest artillery forces in Europe, with more rocket launchers and howitzers than France, Germany, or the United Kingdom."
Finland will be the teachers on how to keep the bear contained and chained. I would even argue that between Finnish preparedness and capabilities and the money the EU has sank into Poland allowing them to grow a significant military, even if the wrong person would succeed Biden, Europe will be able to stand against Russia and win.
Finland president is a very intelligent impressive man. Welcome to NATO Finland.
In Finland, we have a very clever president. I am so proud of him.
Finland is crucial for the defense of our free world.
Welcome in our NATO family!!
What a historic meeting with two great leaders, Alexander Stubb, President of Finland and Secretary General Mark Rutte of Holand. There are times in history when we as the public are fortunate to have the best people in charge and this is certainly one of them. Both of these leaders are going to steer NATO and Europe towards a lasting peace and help Ukraine win its war of independence from President Putin's war machine.
Mr. Atubb, all the best and we from Denmark love you.
Many Finns dont understand how HUGE this is. For 70 years were part of the Soviet circle of influence (do you remember Tarja Halonen and what she did?). EU was the first step we did to get rid of that and NATO was the final. Now we are finally part of the Western World. It took a long time and lots of work.
FINNS MAKE GREAT BREADS! Salute Finland!
My special thank you is for the dictator of the russian federation, for strenghtening NATO and reminding us why collective defense is necessary to secure our democracies against foreign aggression. If only we had listened to our eastern partners earlier. Greeting from Germany.
Welcome Finland, nice to have you in our family.
I think Mark Rutte will be a worthy leader of our alliance, a man true to our values and with a firm stance for enhanced support of Ukraine. Gratitude to Jens Stoltenberg for a decade of dedicated and resolute service to the alliance. Great to have Finland and Sweden joined in. We must stand together closer than ever to defend our values, our freedom, our way of life.
The price of freedom is eternal vigilance!
Animus in consulendo liber!✨
Thank you Mark Rutte and Alexander Stubb. True leaders.
It’s nice to see an experienced leader like Mr. Rutte take the mantle from Jens Stoltenberg. I feel like we will have good continuity. Slava Ukraini.
Heja Finland och Heja Nato :)
Terve vaan
i like Rutte ! this man spot on ! greetings from Finland
🇵🇱 🇫🇮
He speaks very very good English, hardly hearing an accent on. He's not trying to impress, but understandable. Nice
He has studied in england, and his wife is british.
GOD I love Stubb.
Love NATO Follow and support this man.
So much more impressive than the Americans, despite the vastly smaller populations.
...and the non-native language.
Were in the same alliance. Lets act like it 🇺🇸
Rather, it's thanks to a smaller population. Satisfying everyone's interests in a large country like the US is impossible. At the same time, I think this administration has done a good job. Not least financially, it seems to be going well.
🇵🇱 🇫🇮
These are actually impressive men in politics. Im shocked
Yes they are. Compared to the politics this is sanity in an insane world.
Not all politicos are inept!
This guy is a real leader
Thank you from Ukraine! 🇺🇦🫱🫲🇫🇮
💞
You deserve all the help. It it mandatory for us to provide aid. As Finns we feel strongly for you because of our history. You are our European brothers. The hour is dark. But your future is with us in the West. I really hope that you can start living normal life and to rebuild your great country soon.
Great speech President we all must work together to maintain peace and end war around the world and make peace and the world a better safest and peaceful place for all Humen race to live.
Stand strong and united NATO. The world needs you now more than ever.
While NATO and other countries are supporting Ukraine, I have been doing this personally.
Every bit helps.
Good leadership from the member countries will make the work for defense of Ukraine much more effective.

Those are some real dudes.
Now the Fins finally feel safe and secure !
YES OK. VERY GOOD
Two great men.
love the Finish President
12:25 Perfect answer, didn't really expect anything else.
70 years hard work
My full support for Ukraine and NATO.
In my opinion, an ultimatum should be given to putin clarifying that should any missile/drone enter or appear to enter NATO countries airspace, the action would be considered an act of war and dealt with accordingly. This could be a double red line that he might be careful not to cross.
Zelensky could also invite Nato as "guests" to Ukraine, and if russia attacks their guests...well, they have the right to defend them self.
The Goal of NATO, is to Protect, Stability, and Sovereignty, Demoracy
Long live the NATO! Love from LATVIA youre NATO brothers!
When i grew up around Canadian Finlanders ! Great Peoples ! Loved their BREADS! Miss it!

🇦🇺💗🇺🇦 thank you for supporting Ukraine
🤘🤘Mark 🤘🤘
👍
Compare this to the rhetoric from especially Russia: every sane human being will understand who is more trustworthy, right?
Mark Rutte has improved his english pronunciation🇳🇱🧡
NATO needs Ukraine!
NATO 🇪🇺👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🇪🇺👍👍🇺🇦🇺🇦👍🇺🇦
👍👍👍💯♥️
Good 👍 I Like progress
All those unoccupied land should join Nato. Hereby at the same time Nato can draw a red line to Russia moving forward to fighting on additional land. Thus Ukraine can be gureenteed that some land is safegaurded and will not be invaded.
7:00 Reserve is 900,000 Stubb, and wartime strength that can be rapidly deployed & logistically supplied & replenished feasibly is 280,000... I'm surprised by this incorrect statement tbh.
Also important sidenote that is just the strength of Finland's military, since they're in NATO and assuming Article 5 is followed, the manpower theoretically can be 2-4 times that of Finland.
280k is the official war time strength which will be reinforced with the rest 620k of the reserves as need arises.
Poland:
Hold my Żurówka... 🇵🇱 🇫🇮
Miss you Mark Rutte
NATO joined Finland
I like this order in the sentence. 😄 Greetings from Poland. 🇵🇱 🇫🇮
He had a UA-cam channel a while back where you would talk for about 25 minutes can’t remember the name of it though.
NATO should deploy troops to relinquish all internal functions of Ukrainian military, freeing them up to deploy their full capabilities to the front. Having experienced techs in the staging areas will reduce the turn-around of NATO delivered jets and vehicles. Our experience with logistics would also make a huge impact. And most, if not all, member countries are legally allowed to provide personnel for humanitarian, technical and logistic relief as well as support to local law enforcement without violating any international laws or treaties. Therefore such support cannot be seen as a direct participation in the war. Furthermore, Russia has already set the precedent, deploying foreign divisions near the front. This is not an escalation, but rather a war ending effort if we commit to it.
That is why I would like to ask everyone from NATO countries to press their government to send such rear support units. If we rotate a permanent presence of 120,000 NATO personnel, the war's end is a matter of formalities. Especially if we add the warning to Putain that any attack on a soldier will be treated as an attack on that soldier's homeland.
So interesting how English has become the Lingua franca of Europe.
There has always been-and there will always be a need for-a lingua franca. In the past it was French--ere that Latin-now it is English; in the future: Who knows? As long as there are distinct peoples there is a need for a common tongue for communication.
💙
Interesting, thank you
With due respect IMO... From the moment that someone in the russian armed forces pushes the button to launch a flying weapon in a "Westerly Direction" lets say, and knowing well that it's flying characteristics could probably place it in "NATO's territory" , it is an UNACCEPTABLE ACT and therefore should be dealt accordingly. It should be up to NATO to coordinate within it's member States ( and of course with those other States which could be in the path of those weapons, if they ask to), the way those flying objects are neutralized or securely deflected.
Chill. Military force's priority is to not allow war to happen. Will do.
Mr. Stubb. sorry.
Tão tá certo
And as a Norwegian I was embarrased about Jens trying to speak English. Up to you Dutch to bear that burden now :) But in all seriousness, he seems very competent and a safe pair of hands.
El mundo entero agradece a JENS STOLTENBERG gran Ciudadano del mundo, su labor, su corage, su liderazgo hicieron las democracias más fuertes ante un ataque de Rusia, Orgullo, Felicitaciones de Colombia.
Jens Stoltenberg is amazing. I am very proud of Mark Rutte and Alexander Stubb as well.
