  • You will not believe this until you see it. So, here you go.
Along Canadian Highway 1 in the Rocky Mountains, you can see where trains pass through spiral tunnels on their way across the Continental Divide. The trains will cross Banff National Park near Lake Louise. We waited for a train until evening. Light was fading fast. But we were rewarded for our patience. Now, if only they had trimmed the trees so we could see better.
    Enjoy!

The Canadian Rockies make the American ones look like speed bumps

Cool. I'd like to see them, right along with Banff and Jasper National Parks.

Model Railroader perfectly modeled this section. This siding is called Helix on the model and the prototype the bottom is called Kamloops.

The spiral tunnels were built to reduce the grade up Kicking Horse Pass to the Lake Louise area. The original RR route was too steep, located where the highway is now. But railroad braking systems of the time were not up to the task of controlling the descent. After accidents, the spiral tunnels were completed in 1909 with reduced gradient.
It's cool that your Model Railroader modeled this section. Where can this be seen?

The spiral tunnels are in BC (British Columbia) not Alberta.

Correct. The title may be misleading to say they are near Lake Louise in Alberta.

    Ever visited Swiss?

No. Been to Austria several times, though. They have lots of tunnels through the Alps. The Canadian Rockies are as similar as it gets to the Alps in the Americas.

@@Rubik3x Swiss is the masterbuilder of spiraltunnels some very close to each other. Watch YT "Albulaline" a narrow gauge railroad or Gotthard North & South both with a nice collection of normal gauge track. In Austria seldom a complex of tunnels . Gotthard is to gain height in a small distance to reach the entrance of the big one , the Gotthard summit tunnel.
