Richard and The Band preforming yet another great version of "You Dont Know Me", The Wait Is Over more rare footage is here! Live from The Bands Japan Tour 1983
I could watch this over and over...trouble is, each time I fall in love with him a little more. Richard was an underrated star in the Band. A true treasure.
1000% . His falsetto from the Festival Express version of I Shall Be Released..just guts me every time even after all these years. Hope he is at peace, bless him.
"You Don't Know Me".....Ray Charles was the Master of this timeless tune he made famous backed up by the fabulous Ray Charles Singers... But Richard Manuel brings me to tears everytime I listen to his voice singing this song; Why?.....U can even hear Ray in his voice.....Richard did what Jimi Hendrix often said what beautiful music had the power to do,...reach down in and touches your very soul. A beautiful song sung by a beautiful person ❤ who left us too soon. Your soul is at peace Richard. Missing you still in 2021.
I had the honor of sitting front row left at a Philadelphia concert by The Band in 1971! I can't even tell you what it was like sitting only yards from Richard Manuel and his piano! He just glowed... he had an aura that was just amazing! They played everything from their first three albums except for "All La Glory" and "Whispering Pines" haha the 2 songs I wanted most to hear them perform "live"!!! They also played "Don"t Do It" and a few other non-studio songs. RIP Richard.
I just got a pair of noise cancelling headphones and this was my choice to test them, I wasn't let down in the least. Richard Manuel is one of singers that can give me chills just listening and this is him at his finest.
Look at his eyes and if you can't by some strange lack of empathy hear it in his voice, it's there in his eyes, how deeply he feels what he is singing.
Love Neil Young, love Joni, but Richard is the best singer Canada has ever produced. And a pretty good dobro player, organ player ,guitarist, sax player, pianist, drummer in the 2nd rhythm section, and someone who generally inspires awe among musicians.
I love everything about this song as it plays out. As the one you have a crush on walks by and doesn't even know my name. But especially watching the footage of Richard Manuel passionately singing away, really hits a soft spot in my core. Listening to the other Band members playing their instruments as to say..... Richard..... It's all you! It's your time to Shine! ⭐🌟
What can anyone else add to the thoughts and comments about Richard? The very best. A couple of little smokes--a couple of JD's --a couple of tears........RIP and God bless you........never to be forgotton
Wow! What a performance. I've heard this a hundred times by Ray Charles -- fabulous -- but this is the first time I understood the story and heartbreak in the song. Thank you Richard.
I think Richard put more true heartache and emotion into the song than Ray did. Ray's version is wonderful, but it can't tear your heart apart like Richard's version can.
Not bad for a white boy from Canada! :P I'd say he sounds a lot more like Ray Charles than Steve Winwood. Richard was & still is such a criminally underrated singer.
Byron Warfield Richard is NOT & has NEVER BEEN “underrated” !! FFS...critically acclaimed, dearly loved & deeply appreciated by peers & fans alike ! “Richard is/was the Band’s secret weapon” -Eric Clapton. Widely acknowledged as the Band’s (one of the great vocal groups) principal singer...comparisons are unnecessary & irrelevant. The use of the word “underrated” in public forums is in fact “criminally” overrated !
I am turning 64 next month .. I have loved Richard and the Band since they first started .. west coast od Canada and we still knew how special they were, and still are .. best way to learn, and know, that is just to listen ... thanks brian600lyle ..
The Band; Robbie and four of the sweetest souls and best musicians in my collection.Richard's voice was so good it will never die; living on my headphones where it belongs.
@@abanana2561 Hello. Wasn't he talking to Garth in Garths Hotel room, about movies. Then Richard said, he'll get a bottle of Grand Marnier from his room. But, Richard never came back.
Any performance by Richard or Levon or Rick is a time capsule never to be repeated on this earth. To run them down is a view into a narrow mind that does not see the brilliance that was bestowed upon us for so brief a time.
Brilliant. Jimi Hendrix said, "Music can reach in and touch your very soul"....not every singer can do that.....but Richard did just that. He makes me want to cry, i don't know why.
Ray Charles was one of Richard's great idols.I always wished that Ray would rerecord this tune and others that had that giant outdated (for me) choir behind him. This more barebones approach .Richard had a tug in his voice that always got to me.Whispering Pines when he says 'inside my LOOOONELY room" I also wonder what his life was like at this time 1983
In Stratford, in a beautiful side of the lake, there is a park bench in memory of Richard Manual. It has a cool view of the lake and the downtown. Very peacefull.
It's hard to imagine Richard and the rest of The Band all together. What a wonderful group. We were so lucky back in the 1970s. And thanks to YT for making all available to us again.
Man, I love the way Richard covers this. So much soul and passion. The first time I heard it, I had to learn the song. It still gives me a chill. Thank you, Mr. Richard Manual. You lift my soul and are very special. RIP.
Got to stop listening.... makes me crying everytime i hear his voice... the problem is i can't stop listening .... Levon was the heartbeat, Rick was so much of my favorites (how many bass players could sing the way he did)... Garth keeps being tne absolute psycho player, Robbie fucked it up. But The band, WHAT a band.
When I saw the band perform at Stratford, Ontario just a few months before Richard Manuel died, I didn't have half the appreciation for their depth and versatility that I later gained. I don't remember if he performed this song or not, can you believe it. But "I Shall Be Released" was transcendent.
It is very sad that so many singers have problems with alcohol and drugs that ruin their lives. They do not understand how much joy they bring to their audience.
God knows how I loved these guys- I was 19 or 20 when the Band made it clear what greatness was upon us.........Richard's voice was truly somethin' else R.I.P fellas & Thank you!
Richard Manuel, one of the finest and most soulful singers ever, thank you

Beautiful Inside and Out...
YES!!
A gentle soul
Amen
I could watch this over and over...trouble is, each time I fall in love with him a little more. Richard was an underrated star in the Band. A true treasure.
I find myself doing just that. Watching this clip over the years is irresistible.
Surely he was never underrated ❤
it'd be an absolute travesty to not consider richard manuel one of the greatest vocalists ever.
this is just heartwrenching.
Beautiful
For me, it was always a tossup between Richard Manuel’s soul and Levon Helm’s dynamism!!!! The Band!!! Gone too soon!!!! 🫶🏾☮️🔥
And Danko's intense fired up vocals that were unmistakably his own.
They were all very unique and distinct in their own right.
1000% . His falsetto from the Festival Express version of I Shall Be Released..just guts me every time even after all these years. Hope he is at peace, bless him.
Every time I see Richard Manuel, my heart just fucking breaks.
Same here dude ! I have to hold the tears coming out of my eyes.
Great language ____ show it to your wife and daughter
@@murph3001 Sorry if I offended your tender sensibilities. And, by the way, the wife and daughter hear it quite often . . . doesn't offend them.
That's because you're thinking of his death, not his life and work.
@@barakpick True, though those who know about The Band know that Richard had a troubled life.
What a voice and a talent with a short life. Richard you are sure missed

"and life is brief'
there was something in his singing that's beyond words.....his sound , the feeling....missed so much.
The best vocalist, male or female EVER. So thankful I got to see them 27 times.
One of the rawest, most soulful and heartrending singers of all time.

I think Richard put more true heartache and emotion into the song than Ray did. Ray's version is wonderful, but it can't tear your heart apart like Richard's version can.
@@surrealfarm yeah I agree 100%. You can hear and literally feel the pain in his voice. Charles is great but Richard lived this song.

Not bad for a white boy from Canada! :P I'd say he sounds a lot more like Ray Charles than Steve Winwood. Richard was & still is such a criminally underrated singer.
First of all he is dam good and second Ray Charles was not the first to do the song nor did he compose it.
Richard was a wonderful singer and musician.
He is dearly missed
Byron Warfield Absolutely reminiscent of Ray Charles, not just on this song, but "She Knows" etc.
much better than ray hands down

It's a shame that he died when he did, his voice here is better then ever. So much soul in that man.
Richard knows the art of singing and performing
His "Whispering Pines" is one of the great performances of the 20th century. I HATE alcohol for all that has been stolen from us.
Never touching that stuff, it had done no good
