I dont like you that is definitely not a Mariah thing... lol. Mariah has a a couple of years of inconsistency with her vocals. This has not been a thing her whole career. Lol.
She could be inconsistent because she doesn't have a solid technique, never properly studied. Also, she's a human who gets sick, who gets tired, etc. There's so many things that affect the voice that those make these videos just aren't aware of.
All the “worst” vocals are from at least 5 years ago while all the best ones are from within the last 3 years. Whatever damage she may have sustained wasn’t permanent and she’s gotten better (and seems to recognize her limitations now). The “worst” defying gravity is her modifying the melody so that she could finish out Act 1 of wicked on a day that was known as “understudy day”. She went on with bronchitis because the entire lead OBC was out. She pulled out of the show in Act 2. Idina is well known for rarely taking off (Less so after she had her child, though). She goes on when she’s sick A LOT, which is probably where she does most of her damage.
With a lot of the damage that you can hear in her voice in the older clips, I wouldn’t be surprised if she had to have surgery to get rid of the polyps (pre nodes) or actual nodes themselves. As long as she’s corrected what was causing the swelling, she should be fine. But surgery without relearning how to sing safely won’t do anything. It’ll come back.

I always like to compare Idina's Wicked songs to Kristin Chenoweth's songs from Wicked. Kristin has hyper-consistent technique. (Her Master's Degree in Opera Performance pays dividends!) Kristin also nails her vibrato and makes excellent use of her head voice, sometimes her high notes have that beautiful, bright, bell-ringing quality to them. If Idina would be more open to taking in some of those techniques regularly, and perhaps less concerned with sounding like a tough rock-star, I think her performances would be much more consistent.
That's what I don't understand...when she auditioned for Wicked, didn't producers check her resume to see if she had professional training? Or didn't they say anything about her technique as she was performing day after day?

She is my queen and always brings so much emotion to me . There is a reason why she was the first person to ever officially play elphaba and why she is Elsa people need to just leave her alone seriously she is just amazing and to me brings emotion no one else can
I feel as though she's always got this look of fear on her face because she's aware of the inconsistency. If you're worried whether you'll be able to hit the note, conveying emotion in performance is always going to come second to that.
I love Idina. I live in Utah, so no matter how good someone is, they come through here and, not only is it super dry humidity, there's also high elevation with no Oxygen. I've seen the best of them struggle, P!NK, Jared Leto, Lady Gaga (who ended up barfing). It can be a tough show here. So I give ample wiggle room, because location is indeed a factor. They never stop either, they keep going which is commendible.
I saw her for first time at the Oscars 2020, and something I realized she uses to sing with much unecessary air pression although it isn't necessary. She has a good voice for sure... but she overdoes it you know.... and with this condition it may happen one day and the other day it may not happen... it's because she has a inconsistent technique, I think it isn't mature in her mind.
All her "bad" performances are either caused by stress, sickness or cold weather (and they are the oldest ones) ... She's a brilliant singer who unfortunately gets insecure and stressed very easily on live tv (who wouldn't?) Since her last tour her vocals have been amazing, even better than 5 years ago
You guys need to stop making excuses for her. I adore her, but you need to acknowledge the fact she has a bad technique, and that’s obviously affected her voice and belts.
She has to sing this song over and over and over. Consistently straining her voice. It is awful to be criticized for not being perfect but then when you use autotune people complain about that too. No one's voice is meant to last especially woman like Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Idina and so many others who are constantly using high notes. I think she is so gorgeous and talented. I love her voice but definitely think it is time for her to cut back to reserve her voice.
True. People shouldn’t expect perfection. However, you have singers who can still reach those notes perfectly like Jessica Vosk and Willemijn Verkaik. In fact, I think Willemijn is performing as Elsa in the Frozen Musical currently. But with Idina, especially during Wicked, bad vocal technique could’ve damaged her voice.
I think its less because of the difficulty of the songs. But more because of showbiz. Being a full time musician is very hard in order to sing you need to warm up properly and get good rest and watching what you eat. And when you're like indina, constantly going between show to show and on Broadway its seriously hard work.
I've come the conclusion that Idina may have actually have damaged her voice quite badly over the years to be honest Georgina. She's always had moments when her voice has let her down (anyone trying to belt some of the notes she does on a regular basis will have hiccups) but in recent years they seem to come almost every time she is caught on camera singing. She still has an incredible vocal, but those massive notes in full belt, are now a bit beyond her most of the time.
Idina has one of the BEST live musical theater voices of a generation. OF COURSE she's going to have "off" days, EVERY singer does. ESPECIALLY when they're sick or stressed out. She's one of the BEST big belters on Broadway out there, and to say she has no technique or inconsistent technique is PLAIN RUDE -- think about how much she's put her voice through already and she STILL vocally soars. She's AH-MAHZING and deserves NOTHING but respect!
Well.....Every single singer I know, including myself has good and bad days. All depending on our physical and even mental conditions at the time. As a jazz singer I will 100% rephrase on bad days. I've got a mental "thing" about totally messing up in public. Idena literally used to be in a Wedding Band with me and I thought she was a very good young singer with a very pleasing tone quality. All the while she thought I was amazing. Always asking how I did certain things, that came natural to me "at the time". She was good enough to hitch a ride on the fame train so now everybody's a critic. Ouch. On her bad days, all I hear is a great singer "having to sing" on day's she'd rather be in her PJ's. I know for sure, there is no way I'm hitting C6 on a good or bad day at my age now. Ouch every day. I'm always lowering keys and rephrasing cause the show must go on. I'm in search of a vocal coach right now who understands the hormonal changes of a mature woman's voice. Send them MY WAY. If you haven't hit that age. You wouldn't understand. If you're a man, you might be clueless. I'm still proud of Idena to have done so well. Kudos little sis.
Ok but y’all gotta understand she had to do those high notes so much she’s not gonna be perfect every time not only practicing those high notes but singing them for a long time is hard
I was all for what you were saying until you said “it’s about making the audience feel something” - I’ve seen idina menzel live like 6 times and THE AUDIENCE IS FEELING SOMETHING girl.
I adore Indina so much with all my heart and I think there’s definitely reasoning behind her off days because her talent is unbelievable. And really those captions on the original videos were rudeee don’t disrespect the queen Indina my guy
Does she do a sound check before she goes out because that's what almost every singer does and if she did she really should just dodge it live instead of failing and then that will take out at least a quarter of her fails. And I think that she shouldn't go for it every time
I still maintain she gets a little star struck and decides that nobody’s gonna care if she sings “off” once in awhile now that she’s famous. (I saw that one live on the Today Show and it was a horribly yucky day.) Thank you for giving the leeway to say that!
I personally can't stand her voice at all... It's yelly and strained and even when it's good it's nasal and horrible. She's not a good singer. 👍 And that c6 is AWFUL SCREECHING
Even on a good day, I find her voice unpleasant, strained and grating. I think people love her because they love the song/show/movie etc. that she is performing. If you listened to her amongst other great singers not knowing who she is, I think it would actually show that she is average. I dont understand why she gets all the love, especially from the industry. Just my opinion.
hi ! you should do a reaction video to a much better singer than Idina , she's elsa and elphaba in germany and in england. Willemijn verkeik you will be blown away
It’s really not. Improving just takes time and discipline. For starters, take vocal rest, vocal warm-ups, and talk to a vocal coach. I think you should look in the mirror first.
Gonna be honest here. I know you get a lot of hate on your videos, for personal reasons, and I think that’s fucked up. But ummm the fact that you chose to use this video to “react” to...?? I don’t care if you’re reacting to another person’s video or not - you’re choosing poor quality videos and bad performances when she’s don’t a million that are way better.
And the fact that you don’t understand why she pulls her mic away from her mouth just means you never sing live 😂😂😂 because I do the same thing and SO MANY PEOPLE do it too!!! Why is everyone questioning this?!?!

If you're a man, you might be clueless. I'm still proud of Idena to have done so well. Kudos little sis.
The comments and that video gave me life! 😂😂😂
She is like Xtina but Xtina has 60% chances to fail
Xtina has been killing her latest performances tho... she’s being really consistent.
Vocal Master ya she clearly has keep up with Xtina cuz she been 90% good the last two years
why is the superbowl anthem listed in her worst???
Ok but y’all gotta understand she had to do those high notes so much she’s not gonna be perfect every time not only practicing those high notes but singing them for a long time is hard
Oh the first one is so hard to watch☹️
I was all for what you were saying until you said “it’s about making the audience feel something” - I’ve seen idina menzel live like 6 times and THE AUDIENCE IS FEELING SOMETHING girl.
I adore Indina so much with all my heart and I think there’s definitely reasoning behind her off days because her talent is unbelievable. And really those captions on the original videos were rudeee don’t disrespect the queen Indina my guy
I never rated Idina Menzel.
Link for the video she’s reacting too?
she’s my favourite musical artist 😍
WHERE DID U FIND ROCKET MAN???????
what is the link of the video? thanks
Does she do a sound check before she goes out because that's what almost every singer does and if she did she really should just dodge it live instead of failing and then that will take out at least a quarter of her fails. And I think that she shouldn't go for it every time
How on earth can you say she shows no emotion??? The main element in her performances is the emotions.
Also first ! 🤩 love ur vids queen
I feel like knew she was gonna sound bad on some of these, she should’ve just riffed to a different note.
She is the Mariah Carey of musical theather.
But otherwise, I liked this video. M
I still maintain she gets a little star struck and decides that nobody’s gonna care if she sings “off” once in awhile now that she’s famous. (I saw that one live on the Today Show and it was a horribly yucky day.) Thank you for giving the leeway to say that!
Love Idinaaaaa💜
I personally can't stand her voice at all...
It's yelly and strained and even when it's good it's nasal and horrible.
She's not a good singer. 👍
And that c6 is AWFUL SCREECHING
She's too pushy
1:13 💀🤣
I feel like she is anti Idina
Idina is a 👸🏻
Personally i don’t see a huge difference between her worst and best performances. She’s screaming both ways.
There are many performances of her that she doesn't shout. It's just bad technique that made her voice inconsistent sometimes.😕
Exactly, she's so tiring to listen to with her screaming
Even on a good day, I find her voice unpleasant, strained and grating. I think people love her because they love the song/show/movie etc. that she is performing. If you listened to her amongst other great singers not knowing who she is, I think it would actually show that she is average. I dont understand why she gets all the love, especially from the industry. Just my opinion.
She needs learn with Celine Dion (sing and
thrill..)
Honestly I don't think she's that skilled of a singer, she's very shouty to me.
I can't connect to her, voice is annoying
It's so strange for a seasoned Broadway singer to be this inconsistent...
She’s not really that good
hi ! you should do a reaction video to a much better singer than Idina , she's elsa and elphaba in germany and in england. Willemijn verkeik you will be blown away
To find a singers flaws is easy. To improve on even her average performance is damn near impossible. Look in the mirror if you have one.
Listen. If you wanna do vocal response videos then do them based on current content.
And just do your research if you’re going to make a video about someone.
And the fact that you don’t understand why she pulls her mic away from her mouth just means you never sing live 😂😂😂 because I do the same thing and SO MANY PEOPLE do it too!!! Why is everyone questioning this?!?!
I found this entire video uncomfortable to listen to. In my opinion, it sounds like screaming. No connection, no emotion - big thumbs down to her! 😣💖
