I like one thing about this: "The bank reluctantly offers you..." "The bank grudgingly offers you..." It actually promotes the adversarial relationship DoND has between the Player and the Banker.
@Spi Cybershark the Mexican version of DOND (not the newer Yoo Si Voy) does a great job of continuing this version of bank offers. Also, the original MX ver included the "Tentacion" (Temptation) case, carried by a separate model in cahoots with the Bank, with a separate prize.
Wow. I was assuming it was a different show with the same name. But it's identical. Looking it up, apparently this was only a year before the NBC version, but it seems so much more antiquated. The styles on people seem 1990s. I do appreciate the extra prancing around by the models to pick the contestant.
Thanks, Wink! I liked the European train station sound effects, but otherwise NBC was staged way better. The red button with the lid was great theater. Leaving the banker mysterious and letting a veteran comic relay the information was much cooler than the bank case and weird disconnected voice spouting synonyms for “reluctantly.” Not sure why they shopped for a host in Ireland, either.
Gotta admit. This pilot started off slow but got very exciting towards the end. I didn't like the bells ringing after every bank offer, and the Banker VO Lady sounded like she was Alexa before Alexa. Also I don't think we needed the announcer to tell us what was happening going into breaks. Glad they eliminated all those things when they went to series on NBC. Thanks Wink & John!
Yes yes YES! This is what we like! Odd qualifying game but I actually prefer this to the NBC version. The music's pretty cool too. Loving the ABC banker as well, and her different adjectives to describe how the bank's feeling about the offer ("The bank begrudgingly/reluctantly offers you...) I can't imagine what a $2,500,000 win would have been like.
Eh, I don't really think the qualifying game was even necessary. It was a lot more interesting in the final product seeing the contestant pick their case. That way, they're more in control of their own fate. And the second qualifier towards the end is another good reason why it's just as well it was never carried over. It wouldn't have made any sense to keep the number active of a player who took that preliminary deal. Those players who took the deal should've been removed immediately so as to keep that from happening. If it kept going with them in the game and their number was selected, that would've eaten up more gameplay time. Not to mention that's extra money wasted on editing those portions out of the show. It kills the momentum.
@@milesmorris9333 I think, had they continued with this, they would've done the same thing they did in the UK version -- given the Player an immediate swap with any other case on the board before the game starts, allowing them to still choose their case.
This would later grow into the worldwide phenomenon we know today. Kris Aquino herself taught Howie how to swivel, even though he already knew such before, when he travelled to the Philippines.
They can still do it if they want to since cnbc canceled it after 1 season. Cnbc has a smaller viewership then ABC and gameshows doesn't belong on the network.
@@VideosSmokin crazy how the fact Brooke decided to return when howie hosted on the 2nd season and Claudia was on it to she’s on Facebook and I talk to her on her lives
When I saw that lady standing next to Patrick in the 1st 4 minutes of this pilot, I'm like "Is that Mylinda Tov?". She's the model behind Case Number 19.
Interesting "qualifying" game, but too short, they would have been better off i think having a version of billion dollar chicken like they did on pepsi's play for a billion, start with a buyout offer of say $5,000, up to the first 5 to buzz in get the money and are out (splitting it, if multiple takers), if no one takes it, a random draw is held to determine who goes home with nothing. The money goes up with each new round, last one standing plays for $2.5 million. And I recognized 2 models: Claudia who later was on the NBC series and Chrissy Teigen.
Mr Martindale I think you've done a very good job with this I'll tell you what I used to watch deal or no deal with Howie Mandel. As a matter of fact one of his contestants lives not too far from me here in the shoreline area which is north of Seattle so basically at least I was close enough to getting to know her but I never met her in the first place yet that's a matter of fact I haven't met her yet. However, this is how people get involved with contestants. And basically that's all contestants makes friends and what you didn't know is yours Mr Martindale I guess you cross contestants become good friends with other people. That's how good you were when you did these game shows like Gambit and one game show that I used to watch all the time tic-tac-toe so I understand where you're coming from so keep up the good work because I tell you what it it would be a lot easier for us to understand how you got started doing game shows in the first place.
I noticed Claudia, Mylinda, and Brooke ended up being models from this pilot on the NBC version. I believe Chrissy Teigen was as well for a short period.
This proved that it wasn’t supposed to be a pilot; it was supposed to be the premiere episode for the ABC version, before it was transferred to NBC. 37:30 is nightmare fuel; at least, it didn’t air. The first time that more than $1 million was in the case, occurred when Matthew Sollena dealt at $675,000 (his case had $3 million). The biggest winner occurred, in the season 1 finale of “Deal or No Deal Island” when Jordan accepted a $1.3 million offer.
Just so that nobody doesn’t feel _that_ bad for Mike, pilot programs do not payout the full cash won from the game. The contestants in game show pilots would take a predetermined amount of money for their participation.
I think I may have read about an actual occurrence about a decade ago on the original Dutch version, "Miljoenenjacht", in which a contestant took a deal for around €1,000,000, but left on the table a briefcase containing its top prize, €5,000,000 (over US $5,000,000).
I wouldn't have felt sad for him regardless. Who gives a crap that you picked the top prize when you sold it for $416,000, an absolutely life-changing sum of money on its own.
I also found two more names in the models' credits who have later appeared in Howie's games: Mylinda Tov and Brooke Long. And producer Brian A. Veskosky would eventually be promoted to an Executive Producer in Howie's games.
Poor Miguel, having case number nine... he probably thought "ehhh, that case was picked last time, what're the chances I get picked?" Needless to say at least he had money for the plane ride home 😵💫
37:31 Mike Sheets would have dethroned Kevin Olmstead's $2,180,000 from Who Wants to be a Millionaire back in 2001 and became the new TV Game Show King before Ken Jennings having his 74-game win streak on Jeopardy! and amassing $2,520,700 before getting defeated by Nancy Zerg on his 75th game at the time of when the scrapped ABC version of Deal or No Deal was taped.
Irish comedian Patrick Kielty hosted this pilot originally produced for ABC, but NBC picked up the project with Howie Mandel became host when it went to series
I liked the format this series eventually used on the air as opposed to the format used in this pilot. And Howie Mandel was a better host. In fact, he was perfect for the show. Hopefully, the show will come back with Mandel as host, but without that evil banker!
Only in a game like this can you leave with that kind of cash -- multiples of what you can win on a good day on _The Price is Right_ - and still feel like you got fucked.
I like some of the elements from this version. I don't understand the host choice, i never heard of him and he's from Ireland and the awkward dancing. Howie was a way better host and the nbc set is better.
Thank you for keeping your promise Mr. Martindale.

I think it was 03 vs. 05?
I agree. I was trying to figure out the year and thought it was in the mid 90’s bc the hair and make up on the models reminded me of “Friends.”
Interesting how some of these models actually ended up on the NBC version.
a man of his WORD
The narration makes the quiz a cinematic experience

Okay this is way better than the NBC version. With all the 'Deal Or No Deal' aspects of this pilot rather than pure luck, ABC shouldve picked it up.

2021, the year of finding lost media.
A lot of brainsurge gameshow episodes were found to :)
Glad they gave the women trays in the production version so they aren't carrying for an hour!
I met the pilot's host, Patrick Kielty, on a flight to London in 2017 and asked him first "How's Cat?".
A quarter of a million dollars. 26 identical sealed suitcases and no questions... except one: Deal or No Deal?
If this early unaired pilot actually became a series on ABC, I would find that interesting! 🤔
When I saw that lady standing next to Patrick in the 1st 4 minutes of this pilot, I'm like "Is that Mylinda Tov?". She's the model behind Case Number 19.
Oh wow looks very similar to the Australian version I am glad they changed it and made it the way it was with Howie.
this is amazing!!
Well damn, I was hoping Wink was hosting this pilot.

Brooke was holding case number 20 and I believe Mylenda Tov was sitting to the right (left side of the screen) of Aaron
Wow, looking forward to this!
Whoa Claudia Jordan was on the ABC PILOT 😮
I think the host for this "Deal or No Deal" was more energetic and enthusiastic than Howie Mandel was on NBC.
This is going to be interesting. But nothing beats the NBC version of deal or no deal.

So technically this was Brooke’s 1st appearance I am glad I am the only one that didn’t see. Even though she wasn’t in season 1
So Brooke was originally going to be 20
Wink martindale you are a saint
Thank you much Wink for sharing this. So very interesting. I am happy NBC replaced the host with Howie Mandel.
You are a man of word. I could respect that.
This is going to be so awesome, man!
Oh wow, Patrick Kielty? As a Brit, it is so weird seeing such a familiar face hosting a (what would be) popular show in the US...

The pilot had a mix of the Australian version with a bit of the Mexican version.

I have to say, this episode seems rigged. Would this have ever aired on TV as it was or was it strictly a proof-of-concept pilot?
Sometimes pilots are "rigged" so certain outcomes can happen (see the 21 pilot on this channel).
proof of concept pilot it never aired
So it WAS real, huh
Did the pilot air on ABC or no?
I don't think so. Pilots are usually to sell a show to a network and rarely, if ever, air on TV.
