Episode 6: Cades Cove Day 2 (Owen, Lynn and Maggie’s 2020 Dam Van Trip)

  • Our time at Cades Cove campground continues in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Today started out a little crappy... literally as Maggie rolled in something while we were on her morning walk. That was nothing the water at the dump station couldn’t fix though. Then it was off to get Owen his long-awaited Fried Apple Pies at the Apple Barn. Then a romp in a cold stream followed by one more ride around the Cades Cove Scenic Loop in search of a bear. This episode is presented without music... with Mother Nature providing her own music that in reality can’t be topped. Let us know if you like this format.

    Instead of the usual motorhome or 5th wheel retired life, we chose a van trekking lifestyle for our retirement years. It’s more adventurous and definitely a more nimble way of living life. During this pandemic we are trying to stay within 4 hours of our NC home, so a van trip across America is out of the question for us. So what can we do? Planning a rv road trip is never easy, but it helps to have a theme. Our theme this trip is to try to visit as many dams, reservoirs and lakes as we can in a 2-3 week period. Along the way, we’ll do our best to daily vlog the highs and lows. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

    Our dog Bodie does similar things as Maggie. Most notable rolling on his back on top of various substances. Turns out after a Vet visit, he has allergies.
    BTW in VA & WVA I would strongly recommend these three stops. Draper VA, (Harvest Host) Just south of I 81 about 15 miles east of I 77 & I81 intersection. KUMBRABRO WVA state park. Near Snowshoe WVA. Remote Google it. North Bend WVA state park near Cairo WVA. North Bend Trail access this trail goes from Clarksburg WVA to Parkersburg WVA old railroad trackbed. This access is close to midway.Very scenic especially in the fall. All open. We are enjoying these daily episodes. Godspeed to all three of you.

      Maggie has allergies too, I’ve never had a dog that has allergies. Thanks so much for all the WVA suggestions, we’ll have to check them out.

    The huge national park campground we just came back from was very quiet and peaceful because there was hardly anyone there, but also at the same time, I agree with you guys, it's just sad. It doesn't feel quite the same....

    If the wild cherries are ripe - look up in the trees for the dam bears.
    That is were I saw them years ago when I visited Cades Cove.

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  4 роки тому

      We stopped and looked in the trees and woods a lot... hard to do on bikes but stopping helped and was easy. Cherries were not ripe so they were all just rummaging for food all over... wish we had been there during that time. We've seen bears many times but it's always good to see another one. :-)

    You mentioned that you had a fifth wheel. What was the make and model? And also why did you switch to a van. Thanks for the vlogs! We are enjoying them!

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  4 роки тому +1

      Before the van we had at 33’ Grand Design Refection. We loved that fifth wheel. We just wanted something smaller that was earlier to travel with. Having a larger rig limits where you can go and has added stress when traveling. We just wanted easier durning this time in our life.

    Dogs to that as self-protection so other animals do not pick up their scent. If you were serious that there were bear(s) in the area, you could have been closer to them than you realized...they could have been watching you from up in a tree and you wouldn’t even know it, but Maggie knew to protect herself.

    Another successful day out in the great outdoors! I could almost feel the chill of the stream as y’all waded in the flowing water! You are right about shifting your focus away from the sad times of now onto a better place. It’s not that we should deny the reality of the Covid situation. Far from it! But if it is the focus of your life 24/7, it brings you down to such a dark place. With a simple change of scenery and mindset, you have a better outlook on life. Even in our darkest hours, the good can shine through, lighting up our path. Enjoy your journey and keep sharing all the goodness you find. We all need a little bright spot to lift us up these days! Thank you!

    Sorry you didn’t get to see a bear but then again how fast does that Ebike go? Next time you’re in that area go the visitor’s center on the Cherokee side to see the elk grazing at dusk. You may already know about that but it’s an incredible sight to see if you don’t.

    Hi Owen, really enjoy these videos. Some time ago, you did an episode of the DJI new camera. You mentioned (I recall) that you did you blogging using Luma Fusion on an iPad Pro. Do you make these videos while you are traveling in the van? That would make a great video.

    Looks lovely - can't believe after Maggie's shi**y morning, you still had the energy to go bike riding. I would definitely go in that stream and sit on one of the rocks for a while. (probably with water shoes though). Been to the Smokies as a child - driving the skyline drive and blue ridge parkway is on bucket list. Looking forward to tomorrow!

You may not have seen the bear, but I think Maggie found out where the bear had been!😳😂 I loved the photography on the stream/rocks! Good job, Lynn! I think you took that b/c you were holding the camera in the shot...if not, good job, Owen! Sorry, still no bears, but the deer were beautiful! See you tomorrow!
