The Easter Festival is an internationally renowned event among classical music lovers, traditionally opened in Moscow on Easter Sunday. Each year the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and its musical director Valery Gergiev travel across Russia - for the past 10 years now!
In 2012 we were given an exceptional musical gift: the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev performed the complete cycle of Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonies and piano concerti - a composer with whom Maestro Gergiev and the orchestra seem particularly in tune.
This is my favorite Prokofiev symphony. It's so full of fantastic ideas. The orchestration is absolutely fabulous. This was a wonderful performance. Bravo!
The outstanding recording engineering of this performance brings Prokofiev’s sound world alive- absolutely brilliant!
This is the best performance of this symphony (Prokofiev) I've ever heard. A masterful work played by masterful musicians.
Michael Baker It is indeed great! So glad to have high quality video of this. I also highly recommend Riccardo Muti's recording with Philadelphia. That's my favorite ever.
+Michael Baker I'm super agree with you.
Agree, and The Best Sound Engineering, Best Dynamic Range
This is by far my favorite pieces of music ever. This symphony has evoked so many emotions, especially in the hectic climax in the first movement. A masterpiece to say the least!
I was possessed by this symphony 30 years ago...and it hasn't let go of its grip yet.
Лучшее исполнение моей любимой симфонии Прокофьева
I love Gergiev's dances!
I’m rather an admirer of these artists and this work. Rather an admirable performance imo.
I Love this symphony, based on The Fiery Angel, it is emotional rollercoaster piece of music.
"A touching love story, set against a background of demonic possession," says Wikipedia. The Fiery Angel was an opera, but too hot to perform in Prokofiev's lifetime, so as he did for his 4th symphony (reconstructed from his ballet The Prodigal Son), he remodelled his opera into a symphonic structure that would at least be performed. Mr. P. never neglected emotions!
Absolutely thank you for a great reply much appreciated.
At a very alienated period of time, Prokofiev took dissonance places only his mind could conceive with results that leave audiences moved still so many decades later, and they will do so still maybe centuries later for all I know.
2 and 3 are my favorite symphonies from prokofiev.
No 6 is his masterpiece IMO :-)
Yes, 2 and 3 are my favourites as well. He considered himself his 2nd to be his best. He wanted to release a reviewed version of it, but he sadly didn't manage in his lifetime.
@@TheVaughan5 number 6 seems to be the most intellectually bankrupt of the 7 in my opinion. It always seems to be struggling for ideas and to find its ‘voice’ with cliched melodies and contrived orchestration. Compare number 6 with ANY of the others, (the Classical, the ‘iron and steel’ number 2, the Fiery Angel 3, the Prodigal Son 4, the heroic wartime 5, the swan song 7), and the number 6 stands out as the most humdrum and superfluous of the lot
@@jeffbertucen1839 Your opinion of course but I don't share it - lol
@@jeffbertucen1839 I couldn't agree more with you. I have never understood the admiration for the sixth symphony. It doesn't even come close to the sheer invention and excitement of the third.
😢super
Ah,how I love this Simphony,music is perfect,violin solo and......everythihg....Gegriev
Великолепно !
Удивительно свежо звучит. Интересные темы.
Свежо не то слово. :))) Как после просмотра психоделического фильма, коим оно и является, если знать историю создания.
Maestro Gergiev😍😍😍😍😍❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏
Played just as Prokofiev would have wanted.
Russian blood.
Beautiful music, his slow movements fit with his adulation of Rachmaninoff. Gergiev is on record as saying Prokofiev is his favourite composer.
Just thought I'd throw in that this work was dedicated to Myaskovsky. Indeed, in 1929 Prokofiev wrote to his friend: "If you are so content with my Third Symphony, then allow me to dedicate it to you. After all, if not for your decisive influence it might not exist at all, and some sort of modest little suite from the opera (Fiery Angel) would be crawling around instead."
@21:03-21:36 even more beautiful!
❤
26:15 LOL He be one manly trumpet player. :D
mocker
He is great
Yes, his name is Sergei Kryuchkov
The sliding violins; that's one of the strangest moments in music I've come across.
Ростропович говорил про хроматические пассажи дивизи у скрипок в третьей части симфонии:"Это такой,знаете, ---- летающий ...смурняк")))
Интересно , а знал ли он откуда эта тема и что она собой олицетворяет.
The comment about the conductor being difficult to follow? They're having no problem at all; we didn't see him rehearse them. His orchestra gives an excellent performance each time. Have wanted to purchase a few of these videos, but no luck just a CD collection at Amazon.
Yes, without seeing the rehearsals, you don't have enough impressions to understand the exact relationship of conductor and orchestra.
pretty catchy
In my opinion the Rozhdestvensky version is still the benchmark, but this comes close
,
Rozhdestvensky's amazing with many benchmark recordings, Isle of the Dead one of them
@13:33 beautiful
This is so Bernard Herrman Psycho music. Listen to the strings in the first minute, and moments all through the piece.
Indeed! You can bet Herman had THIS score in his library!
Why does it say in the description that the music in this video is Prokofievs 1st symphony...? UA-cam's ai is at it again.
ottime riprese e 4th mvt.

Terrific performance but I wish the cameras weren't in almost constant close ups of a few players. Someone needs to learn how to film orchestras.
WHY DO YOU MADE "PROKOVIEV-SYMPHONY NO. 5 OPUS 100 (MARIINSKY THEATRE ORCHESTRA, VALERY GERGIEV)" PRIVATE ?!?!?!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? AND THE SYMPHONY NO. 1 PROKOVIEV TOO?!?!?!??!?!
WE WANT THEM PUBLIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did Prokofiev ever make a symphony for his Cinderella or Romeo & Juliet ballets please thank you ?
Not that I'm aware of. He did, however, create a series of orchestral suites and piano pieces based on both ballets.
Romeo & Juliet:
-Suite No. 1 from Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64bis
-Suite No. 2 from Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64ter
-Suite No. 3 from Romeo and Juliet, Op. 101
-Ten Pieces for Piano, Op. 75
Cinderella:
-Suite No. 1 from Cinderella, Op. 107
-Suite No. 2 from Cinderella, Op. 108
-Suite No. 3 from Cinderella, Op. 109
-Three Pieces from Cinderella, Op. 95
-Ten Pieces from Cinderella, Op. 97
-Six Pieces from Cinderella, Op. 102
Hope this helps.
Thank you very helpful.
See Don Mowatt's comment below!
Does anyone know the name of the principal trumpeter?
Sergei Kryuchkov
31:55 sounds very out of tune.Other than that, fantastic
No- the playing isn't out of tune- it's just a piquant Prokofiev harmonic dissonance.
Think of the anger erupting as global warming marches on. Blame those who now control the means of producing energy and their minions in government. Think about it and listen.
Quiten las publicidades!!! 😡😡😡
Overall too fast - I prefer Riccardo Chailly's rendering with the RCO
the first tempo is moderato Gergiev is too fast listen Abbado!
Gergiev is a russian conductor and Prokovief is russian music. Learn music!
Frankly, I don't know how anyone could follow Gergiev. Vastly over-rated.
Great symphony, but a nog so great performance... To fast en too sloppy at times...
