Я - русская, и мне очень нравится музыка многих композиторов, но я и не думала, что захочу послушать его фортепианные концерты. И вдруг, благодаря Марте Аргерих, я открыла для себя его концерты, а потом - симфонии.
Это модерн в музыке - блестящий, обоснованный, талантливый! Ничего не слышала прекраснее. Слушаю и слушаю! Браво русским композиторам, кои обогатили весь мир своими тонкими . возвышенными, неповторимыми эмоциями и учат людей всего мира любить Бога, жизнь, людей, надеяться, бороться, идти вперёд и побеждать! i would add there is one director who chooses what camera to put on air and he or she sometimes knows the score by heart in his her way like the conductor also often does

Believe it not, I played this piece with a youth orchestra at a summer camp. The difficult key(s) and stylistic elements made it really challenging for us kids, and there certainly were "moments" here and there, but it made a great impression on me. I haven't heard this piece since 1971, and now here it is.
I believe you! I too played this in a youth orchestra in the early 1980s but I couldn't remember who it was by (I was thinking Shostakovich) or what number symphony it was. I'm grateful to UA-cam for helping me to find it and, even though it's so long since I played it I recall it very well.
This is one of the most beautiful and nostalgic symphonies ever written.
Also a favorite of Shostakovich.

Le talent immense de Valéry Gergiev n'est plus à démontrer tout comme l'excellence de l'Orchestre Symphonique de Londres. Je veux surtout souligner le travail exceptionnel des techniciens qui ont capté ce concert. Je ne sais pas combien ils étaient ni qui a fait le montage et la synchro mais tout est absolument juste, parfait, à la hauteur de la partition et rend justice aux instrumentistes. Brillant et Bravo

1st movement; sad/hopeful/mysterious to me all at once. 2nd; like a fast gypsy/circus theme. 3rd; is like love lost. Melancholic. I love that the 4th movement wraps things up w/previous themes and a trimphant finale!
Yes, the person who handle the cameras , is a deep knowler of this masterpiece and the different sections involved on it.

I don't have words than describe how I feel when I listen to Prokofiev and the Orquest, but Val Gergiev give me something more, the dance with their hands, the direction to all Orquest's people with their eyes. The 7th is clearly the most approachable of Prokofiev’s symphonies (I guess along with the 1st). For those who are prepared to look further and persevere with a more difficult score, the 6th is his finest.

Нормально, но зачем так эмоциональность проевлять, вы что, живёте на этих прокофьевских правилах или в целом, вот мне хочется в будущем создать свою симфонию и концерты но мне как Асан Абдуллаев-Ниметуллаев хочется добавить свои оттенки 21 столетия (хочу чтобы я был новатором не Прокофьевым не Моцартом не Листом а сделать музыку новой не сравнивая нескем)

Gorgeous music!! Roll over tchaikovsky, beethoven, bach and mozart. No composer can match the rich lyricality of prokofiev's sublime melodies and harmonies. Hearing his work (most of it) is like biting into a fresh off the tree peach still warm from the sun. I consider his music to be the greatest ever written; a gift directly from the hand of God!

I find all seven of Prokofiev's symphonies to be interesting. The 7th is a nice swansong.
It's depth is in the duality of the composer. Irony, is something Prokofiev shared with Shostakovich.
Gergiev is one of the hardest working conductors in the business. If he looks a bit tired, he certainly is not conducting like he is. A wonderful symphony given a solid reading by conductor and orchestra.
If you conducted nearly every day, you'd be a little bit tired too )) But still each conductor has a short list of works he can play even if you took him from the grave . Well in Gergiev's case this list is much longer and it definitely includes Prokofiev's symphonies .
Such wonderful music. That very first theme (among others) just evokes a world of emotions unto itself. Prokofiev's melodic gift, and his ability to exploit it in large-scale works, is a big part of what makes his music so enduring.

The second movement is truly a great symphonic waltz that could stand on its own. Couples circling around the floor, skirts swaying, freezing cold outside.

I love playing this piece on bass clarinet, and 14:54 that was my solo.
It''s a shame that i haven't paid attention to this symphony before. its apparent lightness is deceitful, and that emerges clearly as long as its bitter end is approaching. The final bars left me in utter tears.

Now I see where the inspiration behind some of the themes in John William's Close Encounters of the Third Kind could have come from! 4th Mvmt. Amazing piece
I always thought this symphony as ode to the russian composers that came before him, I especially hear influences from tchaikovsky, rachmaninov and scriabin. Of course it still has the distinctive Prokofiev tone to it, but its a bit more straight forward and easier to listen than his other symphonies.
I've seen him conducting two times, 1989 and 1993, in Holland and we had the opportunity to talk with him after he conducted the Kirov ensemble ... he's phenomenal, very energetic and was a "bit' too late, constant busy.
Val Gergiev is such a passionate genius! It's always exciting to watch him conduct this symphony.

I hear so much of the ballet music from "Cinderella" in this piece, especially in the waltz.
So does Gergiev - heard him telling musicians to play it like the first coming of Cinderella.

There's something about the 2nd movement... it sounds so joyful and "Disney-like" but at the same time there's this tinge of sadness which makes it all the more poignant

This work inhabits a similar world to Shostakovich's 15th symphony - a resigned farewell to the world. Beautiful.

Wow, this symphony does feel nostalgic.
i'm so glad that Gergiev chose to go with the original ending of the 4th movement- I think it fits better with this symphony and is compatible with the integrity of the 4th movement, despite the joyful nature of this movement. (for those who don't know: Prokofiev added an additional ending where the first theme of the 4th movement comes back again, ending the symphony ''with a bang'')
I think most of conductors most of the times choose original ending . . . It was author's will to save original ending.

A magical opening, and a magical close. No wonder Shostakovich loved this symphony. His 15th, although more surreal, shares a lot of the feeling of this. Both composer's farewells to the world.

Quite a good recording. Am hearing instruments never heard on recordings at times.
At IU in 79 I took part in an impromptu conversation/lecture in the giant circular music building on campus in Bloomington "presided over" by a member of the composition faculty. I wasn't even a student but that year I was always there to cop pianos to practice so I was thought to be. I will always listen this Brahms of the 20th century differently due to that experience.

This symphony starts with what sounds like and ending theme.
There's a very good piano solo arrangement of this extraordinarily beautiful symphony by V. Leyechkis. A pdf of that version is freely available, if you look in the right place.
my favorite with the 5th;listen to both of them one after the other. Prokofiev used some of the themes of the 5th in the 7th.Georg Szell recorded the 5th with the Cleveland in a remarkable LP.It has been transferred in cd on this one:Heritage Prokofiev:Symphony No 5; Bartok / George Szell;recorded in 1959.Also recording here Prokofiev - Symphony n°5 - Amsterdam / Szell live 1958.The 7th was performed at the same time par Pierre Monteux but cant find it.I had the lp but cant find it...sniff!

I don't see the connection either. They are certainly both relatively accessible, but the similarities stop there
An easy to like work. But for me his 6th is the greatest symphony he completed. It touches depths and heights like none of the set.

What happened to the coda? Is it optional?
To answer my own question, from Wikipedia: "However, Prokofiev was later convinced to add an energetic and optimistic coda, so as to win the Stalin Prize of 100,000 rubles (because of official disapproval, Prokofiev was living in poverty at this time). Before he died, Prokofiev indicated that the original quiet ending was to be preferred"
I actually like the alternative ending but it does change the whole meaning of the symphony. Either way, what a fine piece of music - balletic, symphonic, elegiac, refined and Prokofiev at his his most tuneful and profound.
this is the original version, and reflects the true intentions of the composer, The "happy ending" coda you are referring to was added by him in order to gain the approval of the Soviet regime and possibly to win the Stalin Prize - Prokofiev at that time had fallen in disgrace and was in bad health conditions and living in poverty

Quite so. Conductor is just a prop. This guy is quite theatrical.
No the conductor is anything than a prop. A bad conductor can make a great work sound 2nd rate and conversely a good conductor can make a 2nd rate work sound great. However, of course the players are the central part of the music making, without them there is no music - lol
A conductor's real work is done in rehearsal. His presence on the podium is to provide the reminders to the orchestra of what was accomplished in those rehearsals. Could an orchestra perform a large work without the conductor? Probably. But, would it have a soul? I think not.

Might be worthwhile to ask the musicians about the value of a conductor. My bet is they will rank him/her a bit higher than "prop"
