Hey you are not the only GW dct owner that practices, slow speed, no feet down, manovers. By the way i bought a new GW in black, Oct 23, after watching you, and Mrs Flyer 2 up. Wifey and I both love the bike. So keep up the good work.
Very interested in hearing the ongoing running costs of your ‘fleet’ as I think it gives much more ‘real world’ information to viewers on what to expect than the average standard road test. Keep up the good work 👍
You can save sooooo much money by doing your on service. It is pretty easy, if you are slightly a handy guy. You can find so many helpful videos for free or to buy for 100.00 US a set of video on how to. You can also buy Honda's service manual which is super to follow to take stuff apart. I love working on my GW and so addicted to the DCT. Every oil change,I reset the DCT. The only thing I don't do, is brake fluid flush. I let the dealer do it, at the same time, I let them inspect all lines and operation. You need basic tools ONLY. Enjoy this spaceship.
Feels smoother because they reset the dct during service, something you can do yourself. Google the procedure. Reset my Africa Twin every 2k miles 👍🏻👍🏻
You should always check you tyres pressures when the tyres are cold as pressures always go up when they get warm. So your tyres will be a little low. Lesson over.
Yes Whitty. I always set mine to factory specs when cold. I’ve ridden in temps down to -4c, (25F). The only time I’ve had the TPS light come on is when I had a puncture.
I dont work for Daytona, but those roadstars GTX are the top of the bill. You will easily win back your investment. My last pair lasted 12 years!! So enjoy them 😄 happy riding Andy, on your beautiful goldwing!
Thanks for an informative video. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one that doesn’t mind a little damp weather. Yesterday I took the GS on a 240-mile bimble that included snow and 36 degrees (2C). Ride on, brother.
@@TheMissendenFlyer Back in the day, Daytona Kawasaki was across the road too and I was toying with a GPZ750Turbo rather than the Honda… Wish I had them now as they fetch big money🙄
I must admit just over £200 for a service on a Goldwing is nothing to stress over, it seems very reasonable indeed. I remember when I first got my BMW K1600 people were constantly telling me it would cost me a fortune in running and service costs but they couldn't have been further from the truth. Just because its a large expensive bike does not necessarily mean the running costs are going to be astronomical.
I think that is a fair price for a main dealer service, especially if you got a loaner as well to help make your day productive. Also 4 k miles in a year with all your other bikes as well as your other long term test bikes is a respectable mileage, good on you . One final thing if I could be so bold, maybe a good future UA-cam project for you ( if you are not already IAM trained) would be to sign up for an IAM course and document the training and your thoughts…. The slow speed riding and anticipation plus the pre ride checks ( low tyre pressures?) are all part of the training. I’ve just done mine and enjoyed it immensely and even after 43 years of continuous bike ownership I learned much and my riding is improved. Hope that suggestion doesn’t offend. Take care Nev
No offense taken, I am always learning - although I do have my own views about "advanced" riding corses...you can never have too much training though can you!
My pillion and I have Dane suits you are wearing and they are absolutely splendid, especially for summer tours and, with the lining fitted, great through winter.
Andy, amazed you have only just discovered Daytona Roadstar GTX boots! I was lucky that work paid for my first couple of pairs. Like walking around in carpet slippers when off the bike. They do a Ladystar with an inbuilt heel raise that Mrs Flyer might like. HGB are very good, I brought my first bike from them and I think just over £200 for the service was a good deal. Oh and Rukka is I personally believe the best kit on the market if you can stretch to it. Certainly not cheap, but head and shoulders above other clothing.
The Rolls Royce of motorcycle’s imo! Recently tested the latest model and was blown away just how silky smooth it rode. I’m a massive lover of the DCT gearbox.
@@stevebolton8471 buys Valkyrie for about half the price. Still not happy they stopped making them, but my current one should hopefully last long enough until Honda produces the next model
I've changed the oil in my DCT Wing 3 times and there's no separate oil for the transmission though there is an additional small DCT oil filter. The DCT Wings have 3 oil drain plugs in addition to the two filters. I found it best to drain the oil from each plug one at a time. It takes me about 3 hours to complete the job in order to allow adequate time for the oil to drain from each orifice. I find in agreement with the Flyer that the transmission does shift a bit smoother after the change.
In the USA, I paid about $180.00 for the 4000 mile checkout + change the engine/transmission oil and filters. Bike now has just below 10K miles. The tires look like they'll need replacement in maybe 2K miles more.
I’ve got the same model as you. I got it reduced by about £2500 because it was last years model, though 0 miles and unregistered. Happily it also included the first 3 services, though for an amazing machine like this I thought what you were charged was ok. Loving your videos.😁👍
The Wing sounds and looks fantastic! Nice overview of service. Things of such design and tech giving us such joy, do cost. As nice things typically do. 100% agree on the well made and super comfy Daytona GTX Roadstar boots. Well done here Missendon!
Check tyre pressure when cold. Only time its consistant. Pressures go down in winter. Btw £216 pretty good. Independent wont be 1/2 that! Remember also almost £40 is vat. Dealers got to make profit or when you want them guess what. They wont be there.
My first service at 4000 miles was $550. It’s a money grab by the dealer as they didn’t even adjust the parking brake. Also, the tire pressure warning is a pretty common problem with this bike when cold.
I rock a pair of those Daytona boots myself. Quite expensive but you pay for what you get I guess, they are comfortable, never leave in a drop of water and offer decent protection. Also Daytona will fix the boots if there is any problems like a sole wearing out or leaks not that I ever had any.
Yes they are top quality bits of kit aren't they - and yes I should have mentioned their legendary after sales support - very happy with mine, so much so we got Mrs Flyer a pair......
£216 is nowt for a beautiful bike like this , if you think it’s too much you shouldn’t buy one , simple really, love your videos, some great reviews keep em coming and ride safe buddy.
Like you I haven't put as many miles on my DCT Wing as I've wanted to due to Covid but have approaching 15000 miles on it now. Ref the smoothness of DCT I run the clutch initialisation process periodically as others have mentioned. What I have found is that as the mileage increased the smoothness improved and I have needed to run the process less frequently. Also I have found that fuel consumption kept improving until past 10000 miles but that seems to have stabilised now. You will probably find that the next service will be more expensive. What pushes the cost up is the amount of man hours required for all of the dismantling needed to perform simple tasks like accessing the air filter. It has to be said that it is a great bike from a user perspective but a bit of a pig to work on compared to most bikes. You mentioned the tyre pressure monitor. I have found that it works really well (it gave me very early warning of a puncture) but I have found that it is very sensitive and you do need to keep the cold tyre pressures within a very narrow window to prevent it activating on start up.
I’m finding my GW DCT quite economical to own. The oil changes are more expensive due to needing two filters, but a minor detail. I’m averaging about 60 miles per imperial gallon on the highway. I believe our gallon is the same as yours… about 4.5 litres. That’s quite a bit better than my 2013 F6B. I was quite surprised and pleased. And it sounds like there have been very few major mechanical issues with this new iteration since it was introduced in 2018. Proving to be very reliable.
Hi Andy from Newcastle , Australia. Hope you are liking the Daytona boots. I've had mine for 2yrs. Do about 12,000kms in them each year. Have never let me down , even when riding through water up to the pegs. Currently have a Yamaha Tracer 900 GT, looking to buy a Tiger 900 GT pro this year. Keep up the great work!
Hi Martin down there!! Yes the boots are great - seems there is a lot of love for them out there judging by the comments I've had. Thanks for watching - all the best.....A
Was about to comment that you can reset the DCT 'manually' but noticed that others had pointed it out. I've done it on my lowly NC 700 DCT, it really makes a difference.
Another great thing about Daytona boots Andy, is that you can send them back to get resoled when the soles wear out. i have yet to wear out the uppers on boots, it is always because the soles have worn out, that i replace them
I believe having someone other than the dealer do the maintenance does not void the warranty. Just make sure the maintenance is documented. I have the service manual and do my own maintenance on my 1997 Honda Valkyrie…good thing as the local dealer refuses to work on bikes older than ten years. Put a K&N air filter on the bike and perform as much of the maintenance on the bike yourself…especially fluid changes. I have four bikes and have found the older bikes to be the easiest to work on. More electronics gizmos, means more problems that I can’t fix.
The dealer that I purchased my ‘21 DCT Tour has a service plan that offers 36 months of unlimited scheduled maintenance for $1500. This plan includes pickup and delivery of the bike by trailer. So far I have two services and have 8k miles so far. Hopefully next season I will put more miles on it. BTW, I have the same boots and have been very pleased with them. Good choice!
Good idea buying that plan, I never had that offerred as technically my 'Wing was second hand (I bought it from Honda UK it was their old press bike). Glad to hear you're getting on well with the bootsa!
I'd have no problem with that cost for the service. To echo a few other commenters, a short road test has it's place and gives some useful information. What I find really useful with your data about your own fleet and the ones you get for long term test, are the real word costs of running them. All the best and keep up the great work.
Missed watching your videos. Always a fun time whenever I watch one. Feels good to be back. I am very surprised at the cost. Expected to be quite a bit more! Top result there in my opinion. Those boots and gloves are fantastic! Thankfully, I no longer HAVE to ride in miserable weather so I'm enjoying taking a couple years out from winter/wet weather riding but may have to revisit this video for them. Expensive but well worth it. Thanks as always TMF!
@@TheMissendenFlyer I know, right? Haha! Maybe it is due to the gross neglect that your Street Triple is being shown... :'( Needs more screen time! ;-)
For a dealer price I don’t think that was too bad. Paid a similar amount for my ktm SMC r annual service and my Ducati v2 first service was more than that. Great vid Andy.
The gearbox oil is all in with engine oil, there is a dct filter. You can change the oil yourself in 30 mins for about $110 without affecting the warranty.
Very true. I wasn't having a go at you. By the way, I've just ordered a Segura jacket after seeing your previous vid. Lol. Not the one you have but, theFergus one. As for the correct gear, I still have a pair of Dunlop steel toecap wellies that I bought to bike to work over forty years ago, not much feeling but, they don't half keep your feet dry! 🤣.
Service cost seemed legit for such a complex machine. Rainex (or equivalent) on screen and on visor is such a boon in wet weather. Improves visibility exactly when you most need it which can't be sniffed at.
Hi definitely worth the money for the service on the Honda is worth it Gloves are awesome I’ve just bought the Rukka Kingsley suit £2.5k well worth the money but not everyone bank balance can take it also BMW’s I like how they send me a video of everything that needs doing and what they have done to my GSA nice share 👍👍
I think that’s a great price for servicing considering the cost of labour these days. I have those Daytona boots and have had them for about 10 years now, they are amazing and have alway kept me warm and dry
Hi TMF, hope you’re well? Popped my Royal Enfield into PowerBiking HW and I had a similar cost for the first service on my Meteor 350. Seems like it’s a standard price here in the south east for main dealers 😅 a fantastic job was done though, so well worth the cost. Definitely think that’s a bargain for the amount of work involved for a Goldwing. Thanks for all the fantastic content, it’s a real inspiration and always entertaining. Cheers, Jon (MM350)
I consider £200 to be quite good for a bike like yours, I was expecting a lot more than that. Just before Christmas I bought a new pair of Alpinestar boots from that same dealership (HGB) and found their service and price very good. Retail price £300 and got them for £200 so well pleased. Just been out on my bike today in the sunshine and had to wash it when I got home which takes away a little bit of the enjoyment. Ride safe
Hi Andy. Greetings from Senegal 🐪🐪. I'd say that was a very reasonable service cost. The gloves look great as well. I'll have a look into those when I get back! Cheers bud!
Just came home from taking my Yamaha to the dealer for a service! Will be the last one before i say goodbye to it and get my new Kawasaki! I also do that stop challenge to try and stop and keep your feet up, I personally actually actually enjoy riding in town and traffic so get to challenge myself regularly! Take care thanks for the vid!
I have the manual version and service at 8k was £185 and they lent me their brand new DCT wing as a courtesy bike for the whole day 👍to Blackpool Honda when usually dealers don’t get a good comment . Agree with the boots comment , comfy immediately out the box which is well worth the price . Put 9000 miles on last year on my Wing !
Little tip from a former VFR1200FDCT owner, calibrate your clutch every 1000 miles or so. On the VFR it was a combination press on the drive/sport button and worked a treat. I always noticed by 2k if I hadn't done it. Takes about 30 seconds and will be one of the first things the dealer does
Ooh I like those gloves. I have the M-STAR boots, which with my 28in inside leg on a good day helps. I agree, no breaking in at all and the zip and leather maintenance kit is quality and worthwhile too.
Just had my 2020 VFR1200X serviced at 5k miles by my local Honda dealer, as it’s under PCP. £376 but that’s because I had a new back tyre as well. Yep, 7/10 for me as well. Didn’t get a courtesy bike as I went up to Tesco for a breakfast whilst it was done. Exactly the same report etc was sent to me which is quite interesting. Only slight query is they marked the chain and sprockets as green…. On a shaft drive bike…. 🤔👍👍
@@TheMissendenFlyer yep, sure did. They said that if a service task detailed in the report isn’t necessary on that model they mark it as green. Which is slightly odd as you’d think it could have an N/A or something selectable. Or, perhaps even more specific the schedule would be bike specific. They showed me the ‘job list’ for the vfr on a screen at the service desk (I asked about valve service (24k miles)) so they pulled up the schedule. Seems it’s just a generic form though… I did check the rear wheel after tyre fitting and there’s not a single mark on it which is a relief. I think they saw me taking a video of it on my ‘phone before I booked it in. Keep up the great work Andy, hope you can build on that mileage. 👍👍
That's a good idea - I worry when (if!) I ever get my Royal Enfiled back with its fancy gold wheels they'll get mullerred by some numpty when I get the tyres changed....
Service cost sounds about right, I always have my bike serviced at my local Honda dealer, could do it myself but I think that full dealer service history reflects in the value of the bike down the line, just my opinion.
I don’t know about England, but where I live in the United States if a dealer gives you a loaner bike while yours is getting service that’s a 10 out of 10 no matter what condition the bike
Good watch, My ears pricked up when you mentioned Uxbridge ! My employers UK head office is there ! You didn't used to be employed by a very large fizzy drink company rhymes with poca pola by any chance ? Thanks for sharing
+ 1 for the Daytona's. Had mine for a couple of seasons now, expensive .... think I paid just over 360 with a discount from Infinity Motorcycles in York. I did wince at the price but, but comfort and durability are superb .... worth every penny, what price warm dry feet?
Thank you for posting. The price of servicing sounded very reasonable to me. Service charges seem to be considerably more expensive in my neck of the woods. I have owned the Daytona boots since 2017 (short pair for summer, taller pair for winter/long trips). Daytona is not well known in the USA. Like you said, their quality is top notch. Mine are still in great shape. Plus, if something goes wrong, they will be more than happy to fix them (for a fee of course).
Your climate is so- gentle- for lack of a better term It’s winter there, but things are still green Here in Wisconsin it was -3 F this AM, and we have snow cover But even when I lived in Louisiana everything was brown in winter You have to go to south Florida for things to be green in winter And, of course even up here in Wisconsin it’s really hot and humid in summer with lots of flies and mosquitoes
Hey, when the DCT starts to shift rougher as it breaks in, or is a little rough on the start, it's likely due to clutch plate wear. You can heat up the engine to operating temp and then run the clutch initialization process to recalibrate. You'll notice a big improvement in shifts after that. Cheers!
For a very complex machine, I find the Goldwing fairly simple to maintain. I do most of the routine maintenance myself and it is easier to work on than many other bikes I have owned. All is simple except changing the air filter, which takes me about four hours to change. The dealer can do it in three hours but he charges $125 US per hour for labor, so that service is about $400 US +. Really unacceptable for an engineering company like Honda, there has to be a better way to design this.
I can change the air filter on my Volvo in less than a minute. Six spring clips lift the lid then out with the old and in with the new, refasten the clips, all done.
Hi Frank; I changed the air filter on my 2013 F6B. Quite labour intensive, but I’m glad I did it. I learned a lot. Took me about 6 hours, but I saved myself about $400. I will do it on my 2021 when the time comes, although I’m not looking forward to it. I’m pretty sure I will take more care removing and replacing all the bits that need to come apart to get to the filter than the average mechanic would. There’s so much that could go unnoticed if broken, once it’s all back together.
Hey TMF will be interesting to see what the big service will be. I paid $1800 for my 30,000km service for my Triumph Trophy. It seems to be the time that a lot of owners decide to part ways at that mileage, or so the dealership told me. Here’s hoping 2022 is a better year for travelling and going on some motorcycle trips. Been a rough 2 years of zero vacations and being stuck in Canada for the riding season. Best wishes to you and the misses for 2022 👍👍👍
Just had the first service on my 2021 BMW R1250RT yesterday NZ$494 so approximately £240 ish. Included the use of a loaner bike. So comparable with the Wing i guess. Enjoy your videos 👍
£216 is not bad, i have my speed triple (2016 R) serviced at Triumph as the engine is under life time warranty. Alway book a courtesy bike the last one was a Street triple rs and i was well impressed. Average price Service and MOT usually £190 to £220 👍👍
Rukka does make great quality gear. But they're a bit proud of their stuff, those gloves cost as much as that 4k service on your Wing! Great vid. I found my 4k service on my DCT wing to be about the same price here in California. I'm about to do the 16k. Kinda dread that one as it calls for the air filter to be replaced $$$$.
My GSA 1200 LC was £280 for interim service and almost £700 for major. 😳. My Harley Electra glide was £350 for 5k service so indeed you got a bloody good deal. 😜👍🏻
Nice to see the 'Wing out and about Andy 👍. £216 for a big bike service (especially dct) sounds good value to me. My first service on my NC750S dct was about £140. That was 2016. I'll bet it's around the £180 now.
I took a 40mph skid after hitting a sheep in those gloves, walked away with a fractured thumb and the gloves held up really well. No doubts about the safety of them, I went and got another pair.
Sounds ok for a main dealer. My VFR 1200's 18k service was an eye opener. The kind you could write a letter to...'Dear Service,' 😂 Love my Rukka gloves. Rukka make the absolute best stuff, expensive but last years.
Like your jacket. I've the same boots over 10 year old now, still good but wear Sidi Adventure Mids now as they've got superior ankle protection. (I've got screws in my ankle thanks to white van man).
Main dealer service on that beast + a courtesy bike - for less than a pair of good gloves? - that does seem a fair deal. (DCT customers should be loaned an original C90, amazing fun & a worthy reminder of where you both came from! : )
Not as expensive as I thought for a Goldwing service 👍 I just wonder if a yearly service is absolutely necessary on bikes that have done very few miles? I do remember on my wife's BMW mini car they only wanted to see it at the service miles.
That gold wing is so special. It has comparisons with the hayabusa, bear with me, completely unnecessary, but bloody brilliant. These bikes push the boundaries and that is the quintessential nature of what bike development is.
@@TheMissendenFlyer I fell in love with the kawasaki z1300 as a child. Did you know 70s tv series CHIP'S used kawasaki because harley were to expensive
Yep, love my Daytonas on and off the bike. Wonder if the weather dictates which courtesy bike dealers give you and also if there looks to be a trade up if they get you out on the latest model. Not much to gain for them to give you a demo Goldwing other than like you, having to clean it again. Just a thought
Glad you like the boots too - sems there re lots of fans of them out there! ...surely not, if you have a Goldwing then there's an opportunity to sell you another bike from the Honda stable, I just think dealers are missing a trick not to show case their latest and greatest in these situations...some do it (BMW dealers for example)...
Hi there Andy I don’t think that’s a bad price especially for London area ,I have just replaced my last Daytona boots which after over 12 years ( I think I actually can’t remember when I bought them it’s that long ago )have worn through many winters of use I been off road in them commuted in them been touring in them Evan used them in the summer I thought I would cook in them but didn’t the sole and started leaking at the part where the foot rest rubbed through and the toes leaked on one side. I love your videos they are like your gold wing so smooth 🤣
Good stuff Andy! Bike ownership cost info as welcome as the riding reviews. Quality (safe/effective) riding kit essential too and pays off in the long run, especially for everyday riders. HGB Ruislip not too clever supplying a poor loan bike, given your profile! Price sounded fair though..perhaps an 8 ;-) Chesham bike service fella for me in the summer, handy contact! 👍🏻 Atb..
Tell Nigel at Mototune I sent you! ...and yes I may have been a bit harsh on the 7/10 but the loan bike was a cronker - I'm sure if I'd made a big deal about me being a UA-camr they may have rolled out the red carpet, but "TMF" was never mentioned and I don't think the chaps involved knew I had a motorbike UA-cam channel.......
Great video always like it when you've got the goldwing out. Being a wing owner myself although it an old model and I like to try and do my own work we're I can
Interesting insight into the running costs of a 1800 Wing, your service cost seemed very reasonable to me, noted that your anti scratch buttons have disappeared off the tank side panels on your wing, I was surprised you fitted them, I thought you would have gone down the protective film route like you did on your Panigale.
The cost is surprisingly low even with the low mileage , I'm not tight by any means, I can see the attraction in really good quality gear however for me if I was riding like I was in the 1970s / 1980s would of been great to own something like the quality of the bike clothing you are showing us , however the best gear that I could buy that was affordable was leather gloves/ jacket And bright yellow plastic over trousers with NCB logo which was for underground they came Free ,beggars couldn't be chosers when wages was under £ 80 for a full week working shifts , there is so much great clothing available today what to chose 🤔 I ask 😀
I think £216 is very reasonable, can’t a warranty still be honoured if it’s genuine parts even with an independent garage ? £350 for boots and £200 for boots I personally find quite expensive. But very nice though !! Great video as always 👍
That seems a fair price for the service TMF. I think the wing also has hydraulic tappets so you won't get a humungous bill for doing those at 12 or 24k mikes like you do with some bikes that have shims. Now then gloves.... I always wear mine inside my jacket when it's raining as previously I've had rain run down my arms and wick down inside the lining soaking the insidevof my gloves when I wore them over the top. You might not get that on the wing because of the brilliant weather protection but worth thinking about? As far as the boots are concerned Daytona get my vote. I've had a pair on M Stars since 2015 and they have been faultless. Just like you they were all day comfortable from the first time I used them and have been 100% waterproof. Mine are just like your Roadstars except they have a 25mm raised inner sole giving me a longer inseam which really helps a stumpie like me on the GS with it's wide saddle.
For a dealer, that price sounds ok. Like you, I use the dealer for my bike during warranty, then a local guy, who gives as good a service as my local dealer.
Maintenance costs don't rise linearly with # of bike in garage, as one can only ride one bike at a time. Except batteries, they seem to die with time whether used or not
I’ve never ridden a DCT bike but can’t understand why anyone who is old school like you and me would want that? Changing gears is the heart of fun of motorcycling
Another good show! Thank you. I think the service cost was much less than I expected. I paid $268 for my first R1250GSA service. Roughly 200 quid. You paid a fair price for the Gold Wing given the added work related to the DCT. On the other hand (no pun intended,) those gloves are ridiculously expensive. I’m sure they’re nice, but wow.
arround 600 bucks for gloves and boots ... ykes. On the other hand you have a 1250 so overpriced biking "gear" should not surprise you :) I'm the other way arround. Got a cheap V Strom in 2019 and paid arround 2k (euro) for gear.
...actually I don't own any 1250 bike? On the kit front, yes they are expensive but in my opinion Rukka and Daytona are two of the best bike kit brands out there, their products are top quality - as I ride every day I've learned skimping on kit is a false economy....
@@ioandragulescu6063 yes the BMW was expensive, but I still don’t spend that kind of money on gloves. I’m sure they are very very good, but I would never even shop in that price range. They fit in the category of the $1500 jackets and $1000 helmets. I see them in a web page and keep scrolling.
@@jcollins2826 yeah ... 1500/1000 is bit extreme. For me, I bought winter gloves, and revit is my thing (because ...). I got 2 models in different sizes to try and unfortunatly, the expensive 200 euro was the perfect fit so ... I "had" to have them :)
Good, real world and relevant info. Running costs are so important in the ownership experience, and often missed ir given scant attention. £216 fir oil and filters? Plus the diagnostic I suppose. I don't know what you need to remove to do the work, but if doesn't sound cheap. But worth it to keep the warranty. Lovely kit, but nearly 600 sheets for just boots and gloves? That is expensive. I really believe you can buy similar quality for a bit less. Happy travels 👍
@@TheMissendenFlyer Agree. But, money talks. Have a look around at the next bike meet or cafe you go to and see how many pairs of 400 pound boots you see, or 2000 pound suits for that matter. Perhaps I'm just tight, and I do know brands are important to some folk. Otherwise Chinese bikes would sell better. Perhaps like all things it's about balance. As a one bike owner the money I save in one area allows expenditure in others. That is, trips away. Interesting, to each their own. Keep it up excellent viewing.
I also challenge myself at every stoplight to stop before putting a foot down. 😊 I do the transmission initialization every time I notice a change in the way it shifts. It only takes a few minutes and is a very easy process. I had my dealership do my first service and will do my own oil changes from now on. Not because I was dissatisfied, just because it’s not difficult and saves me a few bucks. I only had them do the first one to have them give the bike a good look over. It cost 147 Canadian dollars, about 86 pounds. What are your thoughts on having the valve clearances checked? Not sure what’s the recommended mileage for this, but I’ve never had valve clearances checked in any car I’ve ever owned and the GoldWing engine is basically the same as a car engine. I’m thinking that would be a pretty big expense and probably unnecessary.
It's interesting < your > FIRST service was after 4000 miles. What about the one that it should has been done around the initial 600 miles ? You live in the UK , Honda Europe has a different approach vs the one from USA. Can you please provide a few details about the service plan you have ? TIA !
Yes there is a post run in check at around 400 miles I believe, I didn't own the bike then (it was owned by Honda and ran as their press bike so will have been done).....
Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks - will do!
You can save sooooo much money by doing your on service. It is pretty easy, if you are slightly a handy guy. Feels smoother because they reset the dct during service, something you can do yourself. Google the procedure. Reset my Africa Twin every 2k miles 👍🏻👍🏻
Cool!
You should always check you tyres pressures when the tyres are cold as pressures always go up when they get warm.
So your tyres will be a little low. Lesson over.
Thanks for the lesson
Thank you! ...and glad you like the boots!
Thanks for an informative video. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one that doesn’t mind a little damp weather. Yesterday I took the GS on a 240-mile bimble that included snow and 36 degrees (2C). Ride on, brother.
I was out with Mrs Flyer on the 'WIng yesterday - that heated seat came into its own!
Wow there’s a blast from the past, I purchased a CX650Turbo and an NS400R from HGB back in the 80’s! They’ve survived all these years! Good to see👍🏽
Still going strong!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Back in the day, Daytona Kawasaki was across the road too and I was toying with a GPZ750Turbo rather than the Honda…
Wish I had them now as they fetch big money🙄
I must admit just over £200 for a service on a Goldwing is nothing to stress over, it seems very reasonable indeed. I remember when I first got my BMW K1600 people were constantly telling me it would cost me a fortune in running and service costs but they couldn't have been further from the truth. Just because its a large expensive bike does not necessarily mean the running costs are going to be astronomical.
Indeed - we chall see long term how it stacks up....so far so good!
How come work paid for your boots James? ...and yes the Ladystars are excellent, Mrs Flyer does indeed have a pair....
The Rolls Royce of motorcycle’s imo! Recently tested the latest model and was blown away just how silky smooth it rode. I’m a massive lover of the DCT gearbox.
Me too!
And if you can't afford a gold wing, get the half-pint Forza 750 instead!
Thanks for the clarrification.....
Cheers Charlie!
The Wing sounds and looks fantastic! Nice overview of service. Things of such design and tech giving us such joy, do cost. As nice things typically do. 100% agree on the well made and super comfy Daytona GTX Roadstar boots. Well done here Missendon!
Thank you!
You are not the only one I do that challenge at every stop
Good to know!
Daytona boots are expensive but well worth it. Ive been useing them for the last 15 years..Lots of Police riders wear them.
Yes and they do tend to know a thing or two about decent kit...seems there are a lot of fans of the Daytona boots out there!
2:14 very nice 5:02 nice flash of the lights from the cage
Artefact of the camera shutter speed.....
Yes that is my experience too - great tip about the DCT recalibration, until today I never knew that was a thing!
Good to hear!
Yes it's definately something I will be doing in future....
Another great thing about Daytona boots Andy, is that you can send them back to get resoled when the soles wear out. i have yet to wear out the uppers on boots, it is always because the soles have worn out, that i replace them
Yes their after sales support is legendary! All part of what you pay for I guess....
I’ve had the Daytona boots for about 5 years they are lovely, you can send them back to Daytona for a re sole too! Excellent choice :)
Yes amazing after sales service....similar with Rukka I understand.
Thanks for watching and for the kind comments - will do!
Andy there's a recalibration procedure for the dct, which improves the gear changes.
...a few have mentioned it....
The Goldwing looks a pleasure to ride even in the rain. Looking forward to upcoming tours on her!
Yes it is an awesome machine - can't wait to do some proper miles on her (hopefully!) this year.....
So why haven't you been watching??? Shame on you ;0) ....welcome back

I have had them boots for 6 years and counting. I don’t think there is another boot I would buy now as they are incredible.
Good aren't they....
Yes so I have learned - thanks for putting me straight!
I would definitely put some rain x on that screen, the rain droplets would just bead and run off
Good point - I'll do that later!
Smashing bike, think the price of service are subsidised for the first service. Keep up the good work .
Could be!
Yes I get the video from the BMW crew too - makes me wonder if I'm paying an extra hours labour for them to produce it for me!!
@@TheMissendenFlyer I thought the same 🤣🤣👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I think that’s a great price for servicing considering the cost of labour these days. I have those Daytona boots and have had them for about 10 years now, they are amazing and have alway kept me warm and dry
Yes those boots seem to have a lot of fans out there judging by the comments!
Cheers,
Jon (MM350)
My pleasure Jon - thanks for watching!
Ride safe
Yes it's a bummer this time of year isn't it - I'm the same....
Hi Andy. Greetings from Senegal 🐪🐪. I'd say that was a very reasonable service cost. The gloves look great as well. I'll have a look into those when I get back! Cheers bud!

Great feedback John - on the dealer and the boots!
Little tip from a former VFR1200FDCT owner, calibrate your clutch every 1000 miles or so. On the VFR it was a combination press on the drive/sport button and worked a treat. I always noticed by 2k if I hadn't done it. Takes about 30 seconds and will be one of the first things the dealer does
Yes a few have mentioned that - certainly something I shall be doing in future for sure....
Ooh I like those gloves. I have the M-STAR boots, which with my 28in inside leg on a good day helps. I agree, no breaking in at all and the zip and leather maintenance kit is quality and worthwhile too.
Yes great kit from Daytona and Rukka.....
Perhaps the app they use has no option to delete that bit - weird though, did you point it out to them?
Service cost sounds about right,
I always have my bike serviced at my local Honda dealer, could do it myself but I think that full dealer service history reflects in the value of the bike down the line, just my opinion.
I’ve had a couple of offs while wearing Daytona’s, and I’d never wear any other boot now. Almost a pleasure to crash in 😂
Good to hear - the feedback, not that you keep coming off!
I don’t know about England, but where I live in the United States if a dealer gives you a loaner bike while yours is getting service that’s a 10 out of 10 no matter what condition the bike
Hehe nice one :0)
Good watch, My ears pricked up when you mentioned Uxbridge ! My employers UK head office is there ! You didn't used to be employed by a very large fizzy drink company rhymes with poca pola by any chance ? Thanks for sharing
No, I worked for a big US printer company that rhymes with Peer-rocks....
+ 1 for the Daytona's. Had mine for a couple of seasons now, expensive .... think I paid just over 360 with a discount from Infinity Motorcycles in York. I did wince at the price but, but comfort and durability are superb .... worth every penny, what price warm dry feet?
Exactly Andy - glad to hear you're getting on well with them....
Glad to hear you're getting on well with the boots!
Your climate is so- gentle- for lack of a better term
It’s winter there, but things are still green
Here in Wisconsin it was -3 F this AM, and we have snow cover
But even when I lived in Louisiana everything was brown in winter
You have to go to south Florida for things to be green in winter
And, of course even up here in Wisconsin it’s really hot and humid in summer with lots of flies and mosquitoes
Yes we are lucky in that we don’t really get extremes of weather…
Hey, when the DCT starts to shift rougher as it breaks in, or is a little rough on the start, it's likely due to clutch plate wear. You can heat up the engine to operating temp and then run the clutch initialization process to recalibrate. You'll notice a big improvement in shifts after that. Cheers!
Nice one!
Interesting indeed! But how does one run the clutch initialisation process?
@@mendip89 If you search for it on UA-cam, there are videos on it.
@@AnthonyThompson Thanks - will do. I didn't even know there was such a thing!
Found it. OMG!!!! I never knew anything like that existed. Thanks again.
Yes it is certainly major surgery to get to that air filter on the GW.
@@twig3288 the Volvo motorbike, awesome machine………
I replaced my stock filters on my four motorcycles and three cars with K&N air filters. On my 1997 Honda Valkyrie, it definitely saves time.
Sounds right price . For a dealership service..and you know they do a good job .
Best wishes to you and the misses for 2022 👍👍👍
Cheers Colin - and to you and yours....
I was a lot more shocked 😳 by the price of your admittedly top quality gear than the cost of your service (which seemed very fair to me) 🇬🇧
Just had the first service on my 2021 BMW R1250RT yesterday NZ$494 so approximately £240 ish. Included the use of a loaner bike. So comparable with the Wing i guess. Enjoy your videos 👍
Thanks for sharing Mark - sounds good to me!
Will be interested to hear how much that one costs you Chad - thanks for stopping by!
My GSA 1200 LC was £280 for interim service and almost £700 for major. 😳. My Harley Electra glide was £350 for 5k service so indeed you got a bloody good deal. 😜👍🏻
Winner!
Nice to see the 'Wing out and about Andy 👍. £216 for a big bike service (especially dct) sounds good value to me. My first service on my NC750S dct was about £140. That was 2016. I'll bet it's around the £180 now.
Yes always great to be out on the mighty ‘wing, and the service cost was pretty reasonable!
That's a good price from a main dealer for the GW.....lots to clean after though!
NB. LCR just added another bike to his fleet a "Gixxer"
Indeed - a lovely one at that!
I took a 40mph skid after hitting a sheep in those gloves, walked away with a fractured thumb and the gloves held up really well. No doubts about the safety of them, I went and got another pair.
Great feedback - thanks...
Sounds ok for a main dealer. My VFR 1200's 18k service was an eye opener. The kind you could write a letter to...'Dear Service,' 😂
Love my Rukka gloves. Rukka make the absolute best stuff, expensive but last years.
Like your jacket. I've the same boots over 10 year old now, still good but wear Sidi Adventure Mids now as they've got superior ankle protection. (I've got screws in my ankle thanks to white van man).
Yikes!
Main dealer service on that beast + a courtesy bike - for less than a pair of good gloves? - that does seem a fair deal.
(DCT customers should be loaned an original C90, amazing fun & a worthy reminder of where you both came from! : )
👍 excellent update, fantastic bike Andy 😉
Thanks 👍
Not as expensive as I thought for a Goldwing service 👍 I just wonder if a yearly service is absolutely necessary on bikes that have done very few miles? I do remember on my wife's BMW mini car they only wanted to see it at the service miles.
I get my bikes serviced annually when under warranty then I do it using a bit of common sense based on mileage or 2 years....
That gold wing is so special. It has comparisons with the hayabusa, bear with me, completely unnecessary, but bloody brilliant. These bikes push the boundaries and that is the quintessential nature of what bike development is.
Yes agreed...fabulous machine.
Very kind of you to say Anthony - and great feedback on the boots, they do ooze quality I must say....
Yeah, I do ‘the challenge’ too in town at stops!
Glad it's not just me...
Good stuff Andy! Bike ownership cost info as welcome as the riding reviews. Quality (safe/effective) riding kit essential too and pays off in the long run, especially for everyday riders. HGB Ruislip not too clever supplying a poor loan bike, given your profile! Price sounded fair though..perhaps an 8 ;-)
Chesham bike service fella for me in the summer, handy contact!
Looks like the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles. Enjoying your vids 👍
Glad to hear it - thank you!
Great video always like it when you've got the goldwing out. Being a wing owner myself although it an old model and I like to try and do my own work we're I can
Nice one Paul - wish I had the skills to do my own work!
I filmed this video before the one applying my spots and stripes - I love the look of them!
Great film thankyou
The cost is surprisingly low even with the low mileage ,
I'm not tight by any means, I can see the attraction in really good quality gear however for me if I was riding like I was in the 1970s / 1980s would of been great to own something like the quality of the bike clothing you are showing us , however the best gear that I could buy that was affordable was leather gloves/ jacket And bright yellow plastic over trousers with NCB logo which was for underground they came Free ,beggars couldn't be chosers when wages was under £ 80 for a full week working shifts , there is so much great clothing available today what to chose 🤔 I ask 😀
I think £216 is very reasonable, can’t a warranty still be honoured if it’s genuine parts even with an independent garage ?
£350 for boots and £200 for boots I personally find quite expensive. But very nice though !!
Great video as always 👍
Thanks for watching Ian - appreciated!
Yes Mrs Flyer has a pair with the raised inseam - it's a great idea to increase your leg length....
Good Brucey bonus vid … always like to know what others pay for stuff … good to compare so I know am paying the right fees 👍
For a dealer, that price sounds ok. Like you, I use the dealer for my bike during warranty, then a local guy, who gives as good a service as my local dealer.
Andy put dct reset into the search on UA-cam and theres a video on how you do it yourself.
Yes I saw that - fascinating!
It depends on the type of motorcycling you're doing - on this bike, in the two up touring mission, it's brilliant.
She's an impressive bike and so changed from the GL 1000 I had form the early 1980s.
Yes the 'WIng has come a long way hasn't it!
@@TheMissendenFlyer but no Rukka jacket?
Possibly - but in the main you get what you pay for and I believe Rukka and Daytona supply some of the best bits of biking kit you can get....
Indeed - I do appreciate that not everyone can afford £400 boots, but when riding is basically your job.....
I also challenge myself at every stoplight to stop before putting a foot down. 😊
I do the transmission initialization every time I notice a change in the way it shifts.
I agree!
