- In our next big update for the Hornet, we will be introducing the ATFLIR targeting pod. The ATFLIR is the targeting of choice for US Navy Hornets, and like the current Litening targeting pod, it offers both air-to-ground and air-to-air operations. While not better or worse than the Litening targeting pod, it is different regarding reticles, field of view and zoom options, action and non-action slewing, and more.
Relevant commands in Controls / F/A-18C Sim / HOTAS category:
Gun Trigger: Space Bar
RAID/FLIR FOV Select Button: i
Radar Elevation Up: =
Radar Elevation Down: -
Sensor Control Switch Left: RALT and ,
Sensor Control Switch Right: RALT and /
Throttle Designator Controller: Enter
Undesignate/Nose Wheel Steer Switch: s
Perfect, now we can finally track those UFO AI!
The dreams of being David Fravor will come true?
In that video they had some sort of auto grab for track, wondering if we will get that in our hornet
It was just swamp gas, folks.
That would be such an awesome easter egg/april fools prank if ED all of a sudden put those in :D
Cant you and me just do that with the TCS in the tomcat? 😂
No cloud talk... but Wags did that nice little pan at the end 🤣
You had me at “far far superior FLIR imaging”.
I look forward to actual heat mapping :)
@@Mak10z Same, that would be great. As well as maybe some actual tracking via contrast - like how the real thing works.
I see clouds, I upvote

That is a SLAM-ER of an announcement, thanks Wags!
Don't know if anybody else noticed - while listening to Wags, I specifically, on purpose, watched a small portion of the clouds at the bottom part of the flir image - and indeed, they are changing shape and position in time. Cool, good job ED.. :).
It's time to hunt the Tic Tacs.
I really wish they added rare tic tac encounter Easter eggs
LoL
Matt,
I have a hankering that the Hornet module is just about the most badass thing there has ever been thrashed through a home computer. Just a gut feeling. I doubt I'll ever get around to learning all of it, but it's mighty cool :)
This is by far my most anticipated feature of the coming update. Looking forward to digging my teeth into learning its functions!
sup miles love ur stuff
Awesome ED, with ATFLIR the Hornet will feel very much like a completed bird!
Ayoo hii!
Thanks Wags for also including relevant buttons in the video description! Hope this continues! Great video!
Very impressive. The ground targeting was neat, looking forward to the even more impressive adjustments Wags mentioned, but the air-to-air was particularly cool, a modern version of the Tomcat's TCS system. I believe I saw some clouds too...
I saw those Slammers on the sms page wags. Im looking forward to that video soon!
Even though the Hornet doesn't get any more capable, I still like the addition. Just having a plausible loadout for a specific setting is worth it in my opinion.
Waiting for random tic tac's to fly around at high speeds
Lol'd
Lol say what you will about that story I find cmdr Dave fravors testimony probably one of the most believable and credible. As he puts it he was in one of the most premier aircrafts on the planet (super hornet) and if this tic tac thing did circles around them bobbed up and down no wake no turbulence. He said he looked for flags and markings and if in his opinion no other country on the planet could field somthing like this then who did. Lol maybe ED will make the tic tac some dlc.
@@TheCraigHudson I agree, i'm hoping they'll add some tic tacs on april fools just for the memes
@@TheCraigHudson Agreed. A very interesting case. At the end of the day, if the FLIR will track it, then its not a trick of the eye caused by some unknown altitude phenomenon, and if its a physical object pulling those maneuvers at that altitude, then its about 50-100 years ahead of state-of-the-art tech... crazy stuff
It has been debunked....

Hes just casually carrying some SLAM-ER 👀😂
Yo I didn’t even notice. Cannot wait to use them!
I noticed that too! Lol
I use atflir in A2A mode more than I like to admit. pretty handy on night missions to see whether you hit an enemy or if you missed
Well this next OB is goona be huge lots of new harm functions atflir as always fantastic.
We know the clouds and HARM changes will be in, but they haven't said anything about ATFLIR being in the next update yet. I'd keep your expectations tempered, it might not make it in till the one after next.
@@saml7610 They have said it in the newsletter that ATFLIR will be included. They have also mentioned extra LITENING stuff, new HARM modes, some new radar functions and other things
My god ED i love the module you put out here and the pace of development.. but i also hate the fact that ATFLIR does NOT come with a new renderer, which was claimed to be prerequisite for it.. I don't even wanna roll up the whole story again, you already know.. Thanks for keeping the work on the Hornet ongoing - i really hope you'll keep it up for the finishing stretch when it leaves EA / enters Released state.
Wags, I will send you my first born daughter as a gift if we get the new FLIR renderer sometime soon.
It’s coming, but a massive task. Thanks.
@@MattWagner God bless you guys, it's been one of the features I'm most hyped for and it sounds like you're leaving no stone unturned when it comes to executing it properly. I'm loving where the sim is headed, keep up the good work!
Would love tutorials on guided weapons. There are qualifications, but no tutorials. I know there are online, but i have found the DCS ones very helpful initially.
Great as always Wags. Can't wait for the pod and to tear through those new clouds in VR!
That's one hell of a capability to have: being able to search for targets and program the lat/long co-ordinates in to a JDAM or SJOW. Impressive stuff, and yet another string to the bow of the Hornet.
You can already do this in the TOO mode with the current targeting pod. You just find your target with the pod and designate it and the coordinates will be copied into the selected weapon.
Damn, more DCS information for my brain to swallow.
Oh boy I hope we also get the new SH-60B and S-3B
@@CakePrincessCelestia Unfortunately nothing teased though, and there's still a fair few models that seem to be forgotten about:

I think those would be great. But what I really want is an F-4.
Just purchased a pc for this game can’t wait to set it up but it actually looks mind boggling just hope I have enough patience to learn
Thnx for the video Matt. First time watching one of your videos on my phone. 8 ads to watch an 11 minute video seems a little excessive imo.
I see 4 and actually only got 2
I didn’t get it this time, and I’ve never had that many in that short a time, although earlier today I had about 9 in 30 minutes. In-video adverts are a horrible user experience, they make me not want to use YT.
@@henrikoldcorn Yeah, I typically use my laptop with Chrome and AdBlocker and get no ads. The phone viewer experience was terrible, and I suspect anyone not paying for UA-cam Premium or using Adblocker has a similar experience.
I didn’t see any ads, I’m premium baby
@@737Maxter *slow clap* Congratulations mate.
From what I understand the U.S. Navy uses the ATFLIR and not the Lightening pod, so looking forward to this update!
The U.S. Marine Corps uses the Litening pod. Apart from that they are pretty much the same. In fact the Navy did train Marine Corps pilots and vice-versa
My wallet is waiting patiently for that Hind... But we also need them puffy clouds...
I also hope we will have the Mosquito this year.
thanks dad, another great video showcasing cool stuff.
Is this the pod used by Commander David Fravor in the «Tic Tac» ufo video?
Yep
ATFLIR was the pod seen in the 'UFO' videos released by the Pentagon, but those were separate events from David Fravor's alleged sighting.
Very detailed and interesting. Great video Matt. Many thanks and kind regards Nick
Nice work, Wags! it seems that the ATFLIR usage is more straightforward than the Lightining's.
Superb work all. Will the north arrow be changed to the ATFLIR style one before release? Believe it should be an N with an arrow on one of the ends, not what it is now like the Litening has.
Very nice update, with that, we can now catch criminals
I spy a "SLMR" SLAM-ER perhaps? :D
yup
Ahhhhhhh My favorite words to hear!
Great job!
Time to chase the physics defying tictatcs
Excellent!! Looks great 👍
Great video, thank you!
Omg... this week just keeps getting better and better :) ..... hey wags! lol
Please forgive my gross ignorance, but in what ways is this different to the Lightning pod? Why would I chose one over the other?
Different military services use different pods; the US Navy uses the AT-FLIR while some other nations and the US Marines use the Litening.
If you wanted to fly a historically-accurate mission as a US Navy pilot, you'd probably want to use the AT-FLIR.
In game though there won't be a huge difference I wouldn't think.
Clarity of the FLIR imaging.
I vaguely recall reading that ED had Spanish documentation for the Litening, so perhaps they had that first, and wanted to release at least some TGP, so they went with that, and now the ATFLIR to match the US Navy usage.
I‘m pretty sure, that the ATFLIR has the advantage of displaying the Flir Image on the JHMCS
Is there a way to use the mini crosshair in point track to slew over without leaving point track mode?
Thank you Matt
Want my new clouds, march nearly over , but this I a welcome new feature , time to brush up on the tgp tutorials
I love the details of your videos wow thanks so much new subscriber and soon to be new DCS gamer. Researching the right system to buy with all the accessories:) any wisdom you can provide would be greatly appreciated. My budget is medium to high. Thanks
Nice one Wags!
Are we able to radar lock back someone after we tracked him with the atflir? Would reduce the risks of a lock being lost.
Let's not ignore how much better the atflir looks on the Hornet. :)
Awesome! Thanks Wags!
Hey Wags! What exactly will the pod be capable of, beyond what's shown? (i.e. NAVFLIR functionality, HMD features, etc.)
Great video, as usual!
As far as I know, HMD slave should work, as it is already modeled for the Lighting. Also, I’m fairly certain NAVFLIR on the HUD will work, as it’s modeled on the real hornet.
I want to note that these are real functions, I have no idea if/when they will be in DCS
It's a no for NAVFLIR (our version of the hornet did not have this implemented).
@@goreoproductions6955 Nope. It was removed in the real Hornet
Would be cool if you had a scan mode or something with the atflir, so you could use it like an optical radar like on the russian planes
All about dem gains!
Nice... Eagle Dynamics: brining simulated Warheads on simulated Foreheads... precision since 1991 ;)
I knew it!!! Last video ATFLIR was spotted! Thanks Wags! Any date for release the OP update?
I think Big Newy posted over in the ED Forum it's scheduled for March 31
Now 7th of April
@@CakePrincessCelestia I know, never mind, hopefully they'll make the April 7th date.
Time to start bring the ATFLIR to my PVP battles.
Also was told that my first A/C to learn on should be the F/A 18C
@ Matt Wagner - will we get´also a Latirn or AN/AAS-38 Nite Hawk Targeting pods for late 80s scenarios ?
Nitehawk should be present on our Hornet anyway - AFAIK they were still in use in the mid 2000s.
LANTIRN wasn't on the Hornet at all (F-16 Block 40, F-15E and a modified version for the Tomcat).
@@OliverMiles98 till 2008 but yes,it would be a really nice addition
@@Obi1-KenBone-Me Yeah, well our Hornet is mid 2000s - so fitting with Nite Hawk.
No, we have no such plans. Thanks.
FINALLY!
hello how are you...I have the thrust master warthog and I don't know what button must I use to make the ATFLIR as SOI...
Focus not implemented ? Deka with the JF-17 has implemented an autofocus simulation on their pod.
i see dem clouds , can't wait to fly in my MI-24P in a cloudy day over syria
YESS SLMR
Will we get this A2A feature that tries to track a moving object by opening a kind of box and when it closes and finds a target it optically tracks it. Like the on in the disclassified Hornet UFO video? Or is this just a feature that the Superhornet has?
Hi Wags, at 9:28 do you need to aim at the object with the Velocity Vector, or rather with the center point of the horizont line (for the target to be in the middle of the FLIR screen)? At 9:34 it is rather the latter, as the VV shows way below the target by then, being still in the middle of FLIR...
I can’t get my flir to come up on the right screen. For some reason my LTD/R switch won’t come out of safe mode. I click it and it goes to ARM but as soon as the click releases it falls back into safe
can't wait
i have a question, at 10:10 when the green square on the bottom left is rotating, is that the gimbal camera going sideways and the derotating mechanism keeping it upright?
Love to know what components are in the set up you use on these videos , sweet graphics .
Nice Slam-ER
Are MARK and/or VVSLV available for the ATFLIR, or are those Litening exclusive features?
So friggen cool.
In a real ATLFIR do you know what the numbers/indicators next to FOCS (FOCUS) mean?
Hi Wags, I was wondering is the viper team working on the bullseye mode? I find it very hard to keep up my SA and to communicate with other aircraft without it.
What is the maximum range against an air target?
Sir can you please share with me your Snapview, Default View settings (viewAngle, hAngle etc.) for F/A-18C Hornet? I always loved the look of your cockpit it looks deeper in a way, but I never could reach that look in mine.
SLMR? This the AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER air-to-ground missile?
Great video as always...does it have better performances than listening?, for example you can buddy lase from more distance, etc?
Noob here.
What is the benefit of using the flir to target air targets?
Also what is the main differences between this pod and the litening pod? Thanks
Yaaaay!!!
When Update Coming ??? We want Those Clouds You Big Tease :)
Wed March 31st according to my tea leaves. Believe!
so what is basically the improvement from the atflir over the „normal“ flir, aka targeting pod?
I'm a bit confused with the title. Will there be a "ATFLIR Advanced" ?
Why does water show as hot in IR? Is that faithful to RL?
Hey everyone Wags here from eagle dynamics
What’s the range on that AA lock, is it similar to the SU27’s EO sensor?
Can you slave the radar to an ATFLIR source? I know Wags did the other way around.
Will this replace Litening II or be in addition to? I believe the Marines used Litening?
In addition. Thanks.
The Marines used the ATFLIR when they go to sea. During shore based deployments, they used Litening pods!
how do you use the atlfir during the night?
I was hoping to an end for the horrible point track functionality. I was tempted to file a bug report with Boing.
Great, now I know how to follow UFO with a FLIR.
Yeah, another cloud vid!
Genuinely curious what the point of ATFLIR is over LITENING II is. Close Air Support I assume with the coordinates and grid but they are otherwise the same aside the different Zooms that appear to do the same thing in a different way. Any insights on how this will be useful for anything other than CAS over the LITENING II pod?
They are very similar pods and use much of the same PVI (pilot vehicle interface). As mentioned in the video notes, one pods is not really better than the other... just different. Thanks.
@@MattWagner oh okay to me it would appear ATFLIR slightly better for CAS work but thanks for the reply Wags! Updates look great. For whatever reason I thought the ATFLIR was a BEAST in air to air especially but I believe I was confusing it with the SNIPER TGP. Clouds look great as did seeing the SLMR which I would assume may be a sneak peek at the SLAM-ER. That thing is a beast IRL so I imagine it will be in DCS
Süper
ATFLIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
EDIT: Can this be mounted centerline station?
I don't believe ATFLIR was designed to be used anywhere other than a cheek station. That's not to say it's not possible, however nothing I've read suggests it can be mounted as a standalone pod on a separate hardpoint like the LITENING II.
Short question to everyone. I am curious what kind of geeks as myself play dcs. Is there a common trait or occupation? Let everyone say age and occupation below. I am 40, an artist/filmmaker. How about you folks?
36 and Electrical and Automation Engineer
If you put FLIR in middle bottom screen its black and white if anyone wonders
So what's the difference between the two pots? Because it sounds like in the video there's a bunch of just like in this pod this one does this talk.
I think we should have a video comparing two targeting pods used by Hornet.
This is discussed in the video: FOVs, Zoom, actionable AREA/SCENE, coordinates, etc. Thanks
@@MattWagner no I got all that but they just seemed like small, minor differences. Just didn't know if there was something big I missed that would really make me want to switch to this one.
Will this quality of FLIR be coming to the A-10C II ?
The whole FLIR system is to be overhauled, though LITENING should have less of a resolution compared to ATFLIR.
