      If a coin has something unnatural on the surface and it can be removed without harming the struck surface, as from the mint, then it should be restored by removing said "unnatural", that is all professionals do. It's not the same as cleaning the original struck surface off a coin or causing a rub that breaks the plain of the original surface.

      I wonder if a coin is restored to its natural beauty how it compares to one that is original and taken care of over these decades when it comes to selling. I would think a restored coin would be less. Would love a video on it as well.

      Restoration is fixing...do PCGS state the coin is restored? If not then how come if PCGS clean a coin they don't mark it cleaned,? If you send in a cleaned coin and pay for restoration do they mark it cleaned still? Like you said, it all smells a bit whiffy to me.

    Over the years, I have added a lot of beautiful coins to my collection. None of them have been certified by any grading service because I refuse to pay the premium to have them "blessed" as being a certain grade. That's allowed me to buy a lot more coins than I would have otherwise. Some of them are in XF condition but are just as stunning to look at as my BU coins because of their toning. Yes, the XF coins have more "wear," but to me they are gorgeous! - Great video Daniel.

    I quit PCGS when my last 2 submissions came back as cleaned and graded low, when they came straight out of a mint set and have never seen any chemicals. The tint usually comes from being dipped in Acetone.

    • @leelydston1225
      @leelydston1225 Місяць тому

      Ahh yes. The misnomer of a coin being 'dipped' and as such 'cleaned' only applies if the 'dipper' or 'cleaner' was not a paid grading service. For that matter, the assignment of the term 'Cleaned' as a grade assignment is based, in some cases such as Daniels example, on an 'opinion' and 'opinions' are subject to many variables or which may or may not be true.
      I have personally observed many high grade coins where, upon inspection, the only reasonable response amounts to "What were the graders thinking? Or NOT thinking?" But, I digress. I have personally been responded to my question on a low grade coin that the coin in question had a 'haze' which kept what I thought was an MS67/68 coin down to an MS-65+. Until, that is, the coin had been professionally 'cleaned'?
      Essentially, coin grading is a roll of the dice where the dice is loaded with 'opinion'.

    • @TheWinstonDouble
      @TheWinstonDouble Місяць тому

      You should not be seeing a "tint" after dipping in acetone? Do you mean the haze you get from leaving a coin too long in an acid dip like E-Zest? Because if your acetone is leaving a haze, then it's contaminated. Never reuse acetone. Throw it out after every coin. You can get rid of the haze with more clean acetone.

    I have to agree with you Daniel . When " grading coins " at PCGS/ NGC ect . just how much time is spent by the grader(s) ? Seems ta me they go over so many coins that NOW get a " high grade " MS70/ PR70 . I remember when they only gave these grads out for a very few ( Silver Eagles ) out of a full box (500) only a few had PR/ MS 70 grades . 5/6 % . the rest were " 69s ). I just don't know why , when now this is not the case . For most any grade . Thanks fer yer videos , keeping us informed . Tom Daytona Beach , FL 9, Mat 2024 .

I sent a Trade Dollar in that came back details env damage and about 2 years later sent back (in the holder) for restoration services. I mean we all agree it is subjective in the first place, so I asked what is the point of even giving these companies any power over what coins are graded what etc etc.. just a fact you can keep sending the same coin in and getting different grades depending on who or what day in mood the so-called Professional Coin grader is in. • @TheWinstonDouble

      Nickel is a difficult metal to get good lustre on and is notorious for weak strikes. If you post good photos to the forum we can estimate the grade, but that's it. Just a guess. There's no way we can say 100% "yep, that's a 63 for sure." Often you'll see nickels that have almost no lustre in mint state. They're tough coins to grade so the confusion is completely normal.

    So if you pay the grading company to " restore " a coin then it is not cleaned ? Kind of "pay us to clean and then it's not cleaned" ? It's a joke ! In a way they are controlling the coin market because they get to pick the winners and losers. Like anything from cars to cameras. A cleaned or completely restored item is taken at face value. Does it look nice or not? Who in their right mind thinks that a 150 year old coin never got wet or was never wiped off with a cloth?
    I simply ask that coins get graded based on appearance and not a guess as to whether a coin has been cleaned or not because we all know now that a whole heck of a lot of clean coins get graded. The coin graders have been tested and they have FAILED. As always, great videos!

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  Місяць тому +1

    Personally, I don't submit anything if something about a coin bothers me as a collector or cannot be rectified with conservation. I do very well with it. I particularly like the new approach of CACG to act fully in the interests of all collectors and to brand the coins if there is even the slightest suspicion that something is wrong with the coin, instead of looking for explanations as to why this coin should have been graded this way or that. We should work on our own ego, that we don't want to have our wishes and primary ideas fulfilled, but submit something that 100 out of 100 collectors would agree with.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  Місяць тому +2

      This isn’t about ego, problem comes coins sell better in a holder with a net grade. Also, no such thing as a 100% agreement on any coin, that is why grading companies are 80% consistent at best. CAC isn’t all that either.

    They must save a lot of time and money on grading coins by calling stuff cleaned. I paid you to grade it. If it's cleaned, label it cleaned, but give me the number grade that I paid for. Not all unc details are the same. So why do they label them all the same? Saves time and money. All I can think of.
    ANACS, the "budget brand" grades them just fine and gives numerical grades for details coins. I swear if they just changed up their holders to something more professional looking, and then did one of these goofy registry set things that's just basically pokemon-go for baby boomers... they'd be a top competitor. People love a nice gimmick, and ANACS doesn't really have any. Their "gimmick" is certifying more varieties and helping you get accurate grades for the lowest price possible with their promotional offers at shows and whatnot. Who wants that when you can have a virtual sticky star badge on the PCGS app that reminds you how obedient of a consumer you've been to them. That's value for money if you ask me. 😂

    I like the 3 cent nickel. The die clash just adds interest to the coin.
    I already have a nice one from you with a straight grade. Otherwise, I'd put it in my set.

    Maybe I didn't clean it properly. Dan, You clean more coins then my house cleaner cleans houses. I'd never buy a coin from you lol You always talk about how you clean coins. And you always get screwed on your buys. lol

    You should send the quarter eagle to CAC and have them grade it. I think that PCGS dropped the ball on that coin. The details are striking. It might be worth a second opinion.

    That wasn't mint luster on the 25 cent piece.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  Місяць тому +2

      Yes it was, you don’t get that kind of luster from smoothing a coin. I should know, I know plenty of coin doctors and their techniques.

      Look in the left field next to liberty. There's lustre that's very visible.

    There always will be an extremely high probability, backed up by decades of visual proof and affirmation, that a patina/halo develops on copper/brass coins from the oils in human hands/fingers. That achievement is not "cleaning" and TPGC 'graders' know this to be fact, yet unabashedly ascribe "cleaned" on a whim, like declaring the deepest depth of a lake by only focusing on its surface.

    Hi Daniel, can you tell me why suddenly junk silver is being called constitutional silver? Been collecting for over 60 years and never heard this term before. Id is some sort of MAGA terminology?

    PCGS is anal on grading. Nuts on toning and what they call artificial toning.
