I've been building since '75 (a youngster back then) and have done my fair share of video projects in the past 5 years. Doing a stop motion + balsa kit build would be the equivalent of finger nails on a chalkboard for me. You, sir, have to be one of the most patient human beings on the planet to make this video. A hearty "Well done!"
Thanks for posting this video,,,excellent work. Rubber powered models always take me back in time when I was a kid. Fond memories of much better times.
Used to build flying ones as a kid. Great times to remember. I built a version of one called Miss America, Curtiss Robin, A Storch, Piper Cub, and a Folker Tri plane. Back when kids played outside and didn't need a phone or computer. A fine old gentleman from Indiana named Jim taught me how. He was a master plane builder and made the ultra light indoor planes. This was back in the mid sixties when a kid had to work and save his money to buy these things. Some of them flew very well. Some of the guillows kit planes were too heavy for rubber flight. But thanks. Nice video of memories in better times.
Though I've never built that well, that clean, or certainly that fast, this brings back memories of my early builds many, many years ago. This video and the build are true masterpieces!
Excelent work , in the construction and the video. Not many people know how long it take to do it. Great sincrony. The end with the lines holding the plane...well...
Very nice video. Albatros fighters were delivered to the front Jadgstaffels with the head rest. The pilots opted out to remove them because they felt the headrest blocked their rear view and thus the ground crews would remove them. Look at the photos of front line units of Albatros fighters, you’ll be hard pressed to find some with a head rest.
Tom, that propeller is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! If you have the time, please make a tutorial video on "how" to get that perfect "wood grain" look on plastic propellers!!! Beautiful Craftsmanship shown here!!!!
Retired surgeon? Or still a surgeon? I'm just awe struck watching your videos.. just pure masterpieces. Both in craftsmanship, and video production. Amazing
Amazing video Tom! In particular I love how you rotate the model while sliding parts in place. It took me a long time to figure out you are rotating the table, not the camera. What an amazing production you put together. I am certain this more than doubled the build time of the aircraft. Great work!
Really liked this. Have been flying rc foamies only for a few years. Makes me want to build a rubber free flight again like all those KeilKraft models I spent hours on when I was 12. Makes me feel young again.Really nicely made video. Must have taken ages to produce. Thanks :-)
Great animation, great build, and a great model. Thanks for sharing! Love especially all off the details you included in building the engines, cowling, machine guns, etc. May I suggest you consider putting a spinner on the front to give this model the unmistakable appearance of an Albatross? Just an idea and certainly not meant as a criticism. Again, great model and thanks again for sharing your model making and filming animation expertise.
TOMs Modelling in Motion I built one similar in the 80's , ( Showing my age ) It took me about 2 months or more to get it right and balanced . It flew away on its first real test flight.. Up , up , , , oops , too much wind that day... Over the trees , across the highway and BEYOND .. ( the rubber band that makes the rudde turn came loose.. ) It flew very well. Lol...
TOMs Modelling in Motion Lol.. Everyone that was there that day still remember watching it soaring away into the distance and one little girl saying " THAT'S GREAT , MAKE IT COME BACK " And everyone just staring at it get smaller and smaller as the wind slowly carried ot away.. We all laugh about it now.. 👍 Really good flight time ..lol.
The stop motion was incredible. Beautiful airplane. The details are out of this world. Did you paint the prop to look like wood or do you buy them like that? Either way, very very nice! Thanks for sharing brother!
Thanks for your kind words ;-) And yes, I painted the prop simulating different layers of wood - just to try to get near the prototype. Since the shape of the model prop is totally different to original it may looks a little bit odd though. It was just a try to get a result like I do it for my plastic models. Here you may see some examples of how I handle the "wood theme": ua-cam.com/video/SuqTDMweQQQ/v-deo.html
Awesome video Tom. Thank you for sharing brother. You are certainly a master craftsman and I look forward to seeing more of your awesome skill on display. :)
Great video, beautiful craftsmanship and the stop motion is incredible Ray Harryhausen would be proud! I have a question? the covering material that was used on your model kit provided?
how do you paint the propellor in that wood pattern? do you buy it? because the one that comes with these kits is always red, also I love these balsa wood plane videos. (The flying ones) You do it really cool, and It would be cool if you made the guillows dc3 or Dumas niuport 27
I'm happy to hear you like my little experiments. The propeller is hand painted by me with some kind of wood grain simulation. I made a tutorial kind of my way to pain a wooden like surface: ua-cam.com/video/BXODJiH6MqI/v-deo.htmlsi=f93ZYWqdi76KPTDo And here how I do it especially for propellers: ua-cam.com/video/8wxBhMJA7tY/v-deo.html&si=7n9IeCM2nuZygy2t
@@TomGrigat I wonder if a plumbing/engineering, 'O' ring could be used. They come in hundreds of diameters and could be formed around a tube/bottle and dipped in hot water.
To fill in between stringers with sheet, cut a piece of soft sheet a bit larger than the area to be covered, press it against the stringers and formers, from the inside, with a pencil sharpened to a chisel point, mark the perimeter of the area, cut the marked area out and final fit with fine sandpaper, then glue in place, pressing it from the inside against a hard surface.

That is a simply amazing piece of filming, Fabulous.
I've built many models in the past 60 or so, RC, rubber band and plastic, however you are a master builder, thanks for video.
Thanks for your kind words 😊
Obsoloutely outstanding- looks like a beautiful kit to build! Happy flying!
That's gotta be hard enough to just build, let alone stop action film it, outstanding!
+Leo Roberts Thanks for your kind words 😊
This is by leaps and bounds the most masterful and inspiring video I have ever watched. Truly astounding work.
I'm pleased to hear 😊
That landing is unreal!
Great to see the art of model building merged with brilliant lighting and a Keen eye for stop motion. Will share for more to see.
I'm pleased to hear you like my little experiments 😊

Late to the post. but yes. Always loved the ephemeral nature of these models. Built many. None survive.

Beautiful, I love balsa and tissue planes. They may seem too precious to fly, but every balsa/tissue model deserves to fly at least once!
Mine flew like bricks!.
Astonishing video and craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing. wish i could like this more than once.
Thanks for your kind words 😊
My late father, a terrific flying model builder, would have enjoyed this. Very nice.
Such an outstanding video and build. Beyond impressed on both fronts. Thank you taking the time to make this and sharing.

great job Tom.I love building and flying rc scale airplanes.
thanks... unfortunately I've never flown such an airplane... My only RC experiences were with some scale ships many years ago.
looks like the real gem
Beautiful detailing and excellent filmmaking but.....an Albatros needs a spinner, it's like the signature characteristic.
Amazing
Nice model and video. Wish the model had cockpit details.
Thanks - yes it's reduced to the basics
Superb Tom ... any update on the hellcat .

Thanks for your kind words - the covering material was included.
Ok thank you! That deep red is nice! I have a Guillow hellcat I have sitting in shelf. A nice dark blue tissue would be cool! Any recommendations?

It's uhu hart.

Just ordered some. Thanks.
What did you use for the cockpit coming?
nightflyer17 for simulating the leather around the cockpit I used the plastic isolation of electric cable. Appr. 3 mm diameter.

Very nice video presentation indeed!!! Absolutely Perfect in every sense! Many I ask, "what powered the plane?" A small motor or some other device?
Thank you for your kind words ;-) It's a "rubber-powered" balsa kit. Unfortunately without any radio control - the plane acts on it own ;-)

Sir , may i ask wich glue u use and wich dope ( i use tissue paste and exe dope or nitrate dope ) i am just curios
For the wood I used UHU hart and PVA diluted with water for the tissue.
Interesting ! I may recommend u to try eze dope from deluxe matrials and tissue paste !
@@TomGrigat anyway great modeling skills , perfect film cut 👌
I used deluxe materials for my other wood aircrafts. They're fantastic.
