  • Continuing our "Upgrade Your Forehand" journey from Monday , today you are going to learn how to add up to 20 mph to your forehand in 30 minutes using science.
Hitting the Ball 20 mph faster feel amazing….but here are 3 Real World Situations where hitting your forehand FASTER will help you Win MORE Matches:
Return of Serve in Doubles: When you can add 20 mph to your return, the net person has little time to react to your ball. This means that poaching on your return get very difficult. Plus if you hit one at them, often they will make unforced errors because they have less time to react.
Approach Shots: You can not come to the net off cheese ball approach shots. In my opinion the quality of your net game is dictated by the quality of your approach shot. Just imagine if you could add 20 mph’s to your approach shots what would happen. Your opponents will end up being late on the ball which creates tons of unforced errors and easy sitter put away volleys :)
Serve Plus 1: Serve Plus ONE is the main strategy of ATP and WTA Players according to stats guru Craig O'Shannessy who charts all the Grand Slam tournaments and is Novak Djokovic’s strategist! The PLUS 1 part are KILLER forehands. So the pros basically bomb first serves and crush forehands to the open court for winners.
When executed the play is virtually unstoppable. That is why it is very common for the pros to win over 80% of the points when they make a first serve!
Your coach today is Dr. Mark Kovacs a world renowned sport scientist.
Everyone in the coaching world knows him as the authority when it comes to teaching biomechanics to ATP and WTA players and Elite Juniors.
Mark works with our top american talent including:
    John Isner
    Sloane Stephens
    Frances Tiafoe
    Madisen Keys
    Sam Querry
And many many others...the list is just too long to mention them all :)
That is why I was thrilled when he agreed to spend some time with me and help me ramp up my forehand speed!
    The results were pretty amazing!
And the whole time I was on the court I could not help thinking how much you are going to LOVE this lesson!
The way he blended Old School and New School fundamentals were very interesting to me and set off some light bulbs in my head!

Spin of Rafa. As a parent of a junior player, it seems difficult to learn how to generate spin of the ball, especially girls. Thank you I love your tennis journey and I totally follow up your videos.

Pete, you could have saved yourself $500 and travel expenses if you just read some of my comments on your swing. I mean these are the same points I've been posting to you about before. You still have don't pat-the-dog and this is important because dropping the racket face helps start the linear swing path forward. It also provides a lot of wrist snap if you are very relaxed. (I also noticed that your swing doesn't look relaxed enough.) If you don't pat-the-dog, you will inevitably revert back to your circular swing path. Every pro that I have watched, pat-the-dog. Why don't you try it?

    • @johantheswede123

Wally Friend Delpo still goes circular, doesn’t he?

500$ is a rip off. I can hit better than these guys and I haven't received any coaching. All the info I get are from the pros and watching their practice videos in slow motion and analyze it. Pete extends his arms way to far back, all he needs to do is have a good preparation(similar to the return of serve stance) and then rotate his body and before striking the ball, drive with his legs and use his hips to rotate the shoulders. That's all there is to the forehand. His technique is odd and the way he holds his racquet doesn't allow for pat the dog (the left side of the frame should be facing down). Also, the pat the dog is a different swing path than what pete has currently.

Thanks for this great series. It's unique and very useful set of videos to really help players at all levels. What I'd like to learn is a cliche, but it's how to hit a "heavy ball" on both forehand and backhand wings. If you've ever played against shots like this coming from your opponent, you know how hard it is to deal with. By "heavy ball" I don't just mean topspin, I mean topspin that produces powerful, forward kicking shots that feel like they're dominating the receiver's racquet on contact. Like I said, if you've ever played against this kind of opponent, you know exactly what I mean.

Marker 4:35 "finish...straight arm..." the physics of this IS wrong: you should have a straight arm BEFORE contact point. Think about it. Have a straight arm AFTER contact will NOT add anything to the speed of the ball. Please reply this question publicly so everybody knows. Thx Tsyt

4:20 I'm not getting what that "pelvic rotation" is and how it relates to the forehand.😖😕 Dr Kovacs says to do it without moving your knees. So it sounds like on the forehand, you wanna rotate the hips with minimal knee twisting? Pete please clarify.

Rafa for sure - high net clearance - kick off on landing - easier to follow in and knock off. It would help you break serve.

I'd like the consistency of Federer and the Spin of Rafa. But that kinetic chain hurts my knees for days afterward. After a while on the court I get lazy and can't get into proper position due to being out of shape and bad knees.

This is silly. Your audience is rec players, the answer is none of the above. The line 6 kid from Wake Forest would destroy any 5.0 USTA player and he doesn't have the racquet head speed of the mentioned pro's. For that matter, he would destroy Kovacs and Macci. The reality is that most rec players forehands are actually better than the other parts of their game. Sex sells though and ppl eat this stuff up, so preach on I suppose. I feel for anyone that paid $500 for this.

i LOOOOVE LOVE absolutely love this comparison with discus throwing, BUT now you have to incorporate realtively statis discus throwing motion with what MAcci told you with relaxed movement :) to get perfect forehand, not easy :) its more like learning some dancing steps......with a boxing kick at the end lol, there was a chanell with a russian guy who did not appreciate the linear movement :) i wish i can show this to him! this is spot on if you want to aim the ball off the racquet you have to release the ball as discuss throwers do.....

I have been working on improving my forehand for a while now with some incrimental improvements, but I am still having isuses with sequencing the K chain and getting my contact out front. While old dogs can lear new tricks, it sure is a helluva lot harder to break bad habits. Anyway, all the vids of your journey are helping, so thanks. All the best Pete.

Wow! Just one lesson with Dr Kovacs and avg forehand speed went up from 62mph to 77mph. This is amazing... As for the superpower question, Id like to feel like the bigger muscles (hips, core) are doing the work and taking the load off the arm. In other words, hit a 100 forehands without arm getting fatigued.

Once locked and loaded in the power position, what is the sequence of body movements of the forehand? Are the hips the first things that should start the kinetic action? the arms? the torso? This would be a great topic to address

I know its a long shot but down the road, could you do something with Dr Mark Kovacs on the serve?
I love his concepts on the serve especially the loading of the back hip.
Keep up the great work Pete!
