Rockhounding with Dinosaurs: Jasper, Gypsum, Petrified Wood

- Come along with Shadow and me as we rockhound an area previously traversed by dinosaurs that left their tracks in the sands of time. As we walk along the same trail as the dinosaurs, we also see the beautiful desert floor in spring bloom. flowers of all different colors abound in an area that for the rest of the year is bone dry.
In this part of Southern Utah, known as Warner Valley, and on to Hurricane Mesa, not only are there dinosaur tracks, but specimens of petrified wood, jaspers, and gypsum abound. Enjoy the drive through the desert from the dinosaur tracks to the top of Hurricane Mesa. There, we rockhound and find beautiful, deep red jaspers, a variety of petrified wood, and several spots of Gypsum.
As the day passes we find ourselves immersed in the golden glow of the setting sun. It was just too beautiful to pass up, so we made a fire and cooked dinner. Afterwards, we went home to sort through the variety of rocks, jaspers, and petrified wood that we had gathered. We washed them up and share them with you, as well as tumbled and polished petrified wood that we had gathered on a previous trip.
Shadow is a fun loving Jack Russell/Rat Terrier mix. He loves people and hopes you join on us this and future Adventures of Shadow!

Wonderful journey 👍🏼.
Thanks Astro Crescent! Hope all is well with you!
Aw what an adventure! I love fires too. I’m not sure what it is but it’s nice. And Lance I think you caught one of the best shots of Shadow at the end with the rainbow in the background. Perfect!
Thank you for watching! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. Shadow is too!

Good stuff lance
Thanks Larry!
You have a calming voice and I do like the relationship with your pooch. I had my own little shadow, a mini doxie by the name of Bailey. We had many good years together. She had to pass from this life about 2 years ago. I still miss her dearly, she was a month shy of 16. Many good years. What equipment are you using for astrophotography? A passing interest of mine, along with being an agate head. You earned my subscription, hope to see more....
Hello Daniel! Thank you for watching and subscribing. I’m happy you had so many wonderful years with your mini doxie. It is so sad that these wonderful little friends of ours don’t live longer. The only solace is that I’m confident they go right to heaven! And while they’re here with us they bring a little heaven to our homes.
As for astrophotography gear; that is a big subject with lots to share. Let me give you my email address and we can correspond at greater length. I’m always happy to help with suggestions on how to get into astrophotography. Or even visual astronomy. But there is a lot to consider: deep space vs planetary; portability; budgets; etc. Feel free to send me at email at Lancesnarr@gmail.com. Again, thanks for watching and subscribing!
That piece didn’t look like an arrow head to me. I bet you it’s just an agate or chert chip. Great video by the way!
Hey Kenny! Thanks for watching and commenting. I’m not an expert on arrowheads so you probably know better than me. In any event, it was fun finding whatever it is. lol.
Whoa. I always thought those ancient continental plates may have already been subdued into the mantle by the newer ones. But here's a perfect specimen. You surely must have found these prints in a very stable continental bed.
Where did you find them?
Hello Himanshu! The dinosaur prints are in Warner Valley, Hurricane, Utah. If you Google: Warner Valley Utah Dinosaur Tracks, you should find several sites with maps, etc. hope this helps!
Thank you for sharing! In one scene I could see the shadow of your camera gear and I'd really like to know what kind of camera and gimble you used for this video.
Hey Witscher! I’ve been thinking of doing a video on this topic because I’ve experimented and learned a lot. For this video I used the GoPro Hero 11 Black. I purchased the creator edition and you see the handle/tripod in the shadow as well. This is my third GoPro over the years. Pros: tough, waterproof, and incredible ability to smooth out the motion with its internal software that does the job of a gimble, only better. Cons: fickle at times, not good in low light, and not good for real close shots.
Some people just film with their phone. Camera quality is amazing these days on smartphones. But they are not good with motion.
I’ve also purchased and use the DJI Pocket 2. I bought it because I heard it performs better in low light. It does. BUT, it is fragile compared to the GoPro. Also, the controls are so small that I find it tedious. And the built in gimble is no match for the GoPro in smoothness. So, I pretty much just use it on its tripod in dark conditions when shooting astrophotography stuff.
I hope this helps!
What we are seeing is a black screen
A black screen?
This is a really neat area, been a while since I have been there. You may already know this, but there is this interesting little area where you can find large pieces of very dark wood, almost looks like basalt at these coordinates: 37.033123, -113.310093. The geologic unit runs mostly south from there.
Hey Rugged Rockhound! I did not know this! THANK YOU!
Really glad you commented. I checked out your channel and it’s amazing. I’m gonna be binging for a while!
@@adventuresofshadowdog Awesome! I know a whole lot of places down there, since I got my geology degree from SUU. I hope to make a trip out to the mineral mountains in the fall, in case you want to join.
@@adventuresofshadowdog You're welcome!
I would love to! My daughter just graduated from SUU. Love SUU! Given the variety of geology surrounding the area, it must have been a great place to study geology. Please send me an email and we can connect. Lancesnarr@gmail.com
