To provide some background on the information in this video: I've spoken with a few people who have brought up rumors that USMLE Step 2 CK may be going pass-fail, including one that came from the program director of a well-known residency program on the East Coast. To protect sources, I won't get into more specifics than that. They mentioned that Step 2 might change to a pass/fail scoring system at some point in the future, and seemed quite confident it would happen. What I found particularly surprising was they suggested that the push for this change appeared to be coming from the NBME itself, rather than from residency program directors (this program director was against the change, as were many of the program directors I've spoken to about Step 1 going to pass-fail when it happened). I found this surprising, and I'm curious to hear others' thoughts on the potential implications of such a change.

i agreed with step 1 being pass fail because it is basic medical sciences. step 2ck was more of a mirror to final exams for med school and assessed clinical knowledge and reasoning that you'd actually use at the bedside. if step 2 really becomes pass fail then imgs will suffer and the only things that could objectively standout for them would be having step 3 yog and research which all have non modifiable factors that can affect results such as where the person is from their financial standing research opportunities available to them visa status etc. it also will then make it super difficult for persons with attempts to even get recognsied.

I just wanted to stop by and say that I just recently begun my USMLE journey, I’m in 3rd year of medical school in Mexico. And while I am studying and using the resources that many people recommend, I also take some time to watch videos that can help me make my studying more effective, and I started watching your videos and couldn’t believe that we are not even 1k subscribers, but I’m sure with your content this channel will grow quickly, you have some amazing content on many topics and do the most important thing which is makes us want to understand medicine, instead of memorizing medicine, and I really appreciate your work and how that has help me recently, I will still be here supporting and learning from you, thank very much Alec!

@@alec.palmerton_md For me it will be valuable for example that I’ve been using first aid and AMBOSS to guide on the topics that I need to know in depth, which I believe you mention in the First Aid video. But it will be really helpful if you can show us in a few examples how we can transport that information into effective flashcards, learn how to grab the most important parts of each topic to learn them in depth and then put that information into flashcards that help us with better understanding of them. Because I’ve been that person that at the end of studying ischemic stroke finishes with 110 flashcards and doesn’t want to return to check them ever again haha

Thanks for the ideas and support! I can definitely relate to the feeling of making way too many cards and feeling a deep sense of dread. In the coming weeks, I hope to make more videos on how to make effective cards.

I really hope it becomes p/f. Medical students have enough to worry about already. This will help improve mental health and allow medical students to focus on learning rather than their grades

I do wanna offer a caveat since we had so many ppl labeled us as lazy and unprepared after step 1 becomes pass/fail: the failure rate did increase like you mention...but also the PASSING SCORE. If you increase the passing score, of course less ppl are gonna pass, given the SAME population. On the other hand, Step 2, which have yet gone P/F, ALSO has a drop in passing rate, same logic
