I was about to comment this but you beat me to the punch. The new OneDnD monk makes this and other classes way stronger now (if you take the subclass from 5e, don’t know how they look in the UA)
They say that dnd2024 will be backward compatible, and if that ends up being true the new monk will be awesome...but they've made a lot of changes so I'd like to know HOW it'll be backward compatible.
@@trevorninja100From what has been explained: Things that have the same name (or are functional replacements like the sorcerer subclasses) you have to use the 1DnD version, but from there basically everything has been designed to slot in at exactly the same levels.
This still needs some changes tbh Breath of the dragon should cost 1 ki point instead of two or early level monks become way too ki hungry again Wings unfurled probably shouldn't be tied to PB times per long rest limit, and just cost 1 ki point (so no ki for step of the wind w/o disengage, 1 ki for step of the wind and disengage, 1 ki for step of wind and flight for one round, 2 ki for step of wind with disengage and flight) The level 11 feature is pretty useless if they don't allow either both features, or the resistance option costing less ki and frightful aura not being single target And level 17 feature is a bit underpowered if it doesn't give wings unfurled for the entire duration as well.
I absolutely love the idea of a bunch of old wise monks sitting around a table trying to figure out what "KILL THEM ALL! END THEIR BLOODLINES!" actually mean.
@@youmightbeadnd What do you think of the D&D Player's Handbooks Guide Monk 5.5? I personally think they are freaking awesome 😎👍, they fixed all the problems the Fifth Edition Monk had. 7:49 since step of the wind doesn’t cost ki anymore, new monk is able to fly 10 as a bonus action on every turn. Not to mention when you DO use a ki point, you get to disengage and fly for free

@@Dylan_lion that's fair, I really think that subclass could still use a bit of tweaking. Kinda feels like a lot of the subclasses they came out with never went through play testing. Cobalt soul especially feels unfinished in my opinion

This is the second video in two days that has reminded me Dragon Tales was a thing. Also, it's worth noting that you can beat up werewolves, ghosts, and werewolf ghosts starting right at 3rd level, since you can choose what damage type your fists do.
I multiclassed my dragon monk with peace cleric. With step of the wind dash and the balm of peace channel divinity, he could do an entire lap around the battlefield weaving in and out of bad guys and deliver a hell of a lot of healing before reappearing back in front of his initial target. Fun times.
So I thought of an Ascendant Dragon monk who was trained and raised by a golden dragon. And who's monk weapon was a jian that was wrapped in cloth over it's scabbard and had a really ornate golden seal which I used mostly to block, parry and for bludgeoning. And my monk was told by the dragon who raised him that if he broke the seal and used the blade he'd be unstoppable. He'd have all the strength of the golden dragon himself and could strike down his enemies in a single blow. But doing so would kill said dragon since he took all his strength. So the day came when the seal was broken and it was just an ordinary sword. No magic no mighty dragon power just a sword, an all be it nice sword but a sword all the same. And when my monk asked the dragon why did he tell him for years that using the sword would kill him? the dragon said "If you would so brazenly take the life of another then why not me?"
17 lvls in Ascendant Dragon Monk, 2 lvls in Fighter for Action Surge, and 1 lvl in Draconic Sorcerer for Draconic Resilience "+ 13 to AC when not wearing armor".
Love these videos you post as always. Can’t wait for the illusionist wizard and the archfey warlock in the future. Those videos (after I enjoy watching them) would go straight to my players since they are new to the game and two of them are playing these subclasses. As always thanks to you for making these videos informative, enjoyable, and cool af to watch. Can’t wait to watch the rest 👍
Funnily enough, mutlticlassing this with Beast Barbarian gets you some FUN Str-onk options~ Got a Kappa (Reflavored Locathah) Ascendant Monk / Beast Barb, and with her rage she basically gets full on dragon features with every fight! And Reckless Flurry of Blows? *chef kiss*
Awesome! I'm checking for a new character idea for a one shot this tuesday. I was wanting to try the monk for like 2 month already, and i wanted to try a dragonborn race for a while but i didn't know about Ascendant Dragon monks. So i guess i found my character right here! thanks!
I’m doing it right now my dm is letting me do wrestling moves for my moves instead of some other things it’s gonna be lit an Ork monk who’s basically Johnny cage in DND
I played this and it gets extra fun if your dm allows you to take advantage of having access to different damage types. Like using cold damage to weaken a lock or a chain so you can break it. Fire hands to start fires and lighting damage to over charge magic crystals. Poison damage to make poison for other to use. Even using thunder to single people as it can be any sound.
I like the idea of just a big scary feral dragonborn that attacks with its claws and mouth and breathes fire. Doesn't need armor, it has scales. When it gets high enough level it grows actual wings instead of spectral wings. 🔥
The coolest part of this subclass that i found, is when you are already a dragonborn from the fizban's list of dragonborns, you can do 2 breath attacks on 1 action, and then with the fighter dip do 2 more breath attacks on the action surge, which is just awesome as that is 16d10 damage
This was my first character in DnD and I love playing them. Sadly we only got to level three before we had to start another campaign. I plan on playing them again for a later campaign
I am currently trying to homebrew a monk subclass called Body of the First Stone, it is a STR and CON based class, designed almost specifically for Dragonborn to use.
Magical Karate Man is my favorite class. I don't care how lackluster 5e made them. I've made some off the wall weird and cool characters that are monks. My current one is a halfling luchador that does tons of high flying attacks and manuevers enemies & allies around for the show stopping specials. Monks have the best flavor and are the most fun for me.
Me and my friends started a new campaing, and my character is a minotaur dragon monk Its pretty funy to have the visual image of a minotaur motor boating the enemy to extintion with fiery horns XD
I recently played an ascendant dragon monk in a campaign. My personal take on it is, excellent flavor, and a good monk subclass, but outpaced at equal levels by other martials. Despite my lack of mechanical power however, I was successful in my ultimate goal of making the GM want to rip his hair out every session. 10/10, would use wings unfurled to dunk in basketball again
For my first D&D character I'm going with Harengon Monk, and Im either going with this subclass, Sun Soul, or Mercy. I'll probably wait until I see the classes the rest of my party are looking to do, so I can fill in the gaps the right way.
Yknow, mentioning the Naruto stuff, they oddly work for some builds. Breath attacks? Elemental Jutsu. Stunning Strike? Taijutsu moves. Wings unfurled? The amount of air game any given ninja in that show can get from "Jumping" is insane. Elemental strikes? Less powerful Chidori or elemental themed fighting style. Using a weapon? ALSO Chidori or channeling ki into your weapon. Line based lightning attack after stunning the foe? Actual Chidori or Rasengan. Wyrm Aura? Genjutsu or just extending your protection onto others. Admittedly it breaks down a bit with the Diamond Soul and such. But hey, Dip out at some point to get Mirror Image or Echo Knight for some Shadow Clones. Alternatively, you can see it as a different monster or animal themed one. So like, Insects.
So, I plan on using this subclass for my next character. More specifically, im going to try for 17 level dragon monk and 3 level giant barbarian, hadozee to try and make my own, dnd-ified take on Sun Wukong
Finally all caught up 🎉 New subscriber. Found you from a short, came to see the Bard video stayed to see them all 😂 love your videos Would love to see my OG subclass the Necromancer shown some attention if you could work it in somewhere

Quick! someone get me a campaign with a Drake Warden, Ascendant Dragon, draconic bloodline, and... purple dragon knight (really no dragon based fighter subclasses?)
Wait ppl think monks are bad? They are absolutely op they get so much AC, extra movement, and so much utility like being able to walk on water, catch projectiles, get a billion extra movement plus bonus action dash, and at least 1 extra melee bonus action a round. It so good with multiclassing too give any wizard a good ac, and an up close attack for that just in case. I have a monk druid combo that I love spore druid plus monk. I like to go kensai, but open hand works well too. With this by level 8 with 0 magic items. I use wood eld for proficiency with scimitar, and I take the gladiator background so I can start with one just because I like them, and that extra 5 mobility is nice too. With an 18 in wisdom, and a 16 in dex I get 18 AC, plus 2 every turn for holding a scimitar in my left hand because it's my kensai weapon as long as I make an unarmed attack during my turn, so that's 20 ac. I also use Symbiotic entity to get 12 temp hp, and whole that temp hp exist my attacks deals and extra 1d6 damage PER ATTACK and you can just you your reaction against anyone in 10 feet of you if they make any attack at all. Speaking I'd attack I use flame blade lvl 2 spell as my primary weapon. Kensai weapon only needs to be in hand to get the bonus not used, so as a lvl 5 monk that's 2 attacks with flame blade but remember your Symbiotic entity is still up, so that's 4d6 dmg per attack, oh yeah and flurry of blows so 2 more attacks 1d4+1d6, and don't for get your 1d4 as a reactions. So at lvl 8 you have 20AC, 45ft of movement, 12d6+1d4+8 damage every turn, plus stuff like slowfall and stunning strike too. Monks are op.
I always ask my DM if I can play the UA variant of this subclass because if there's one thing WotC has gotten good at over the years, it's screwing Monks over in their balanced releases
Way of the four elements: “who are you?”
Dragon monk: “I’m you, but better.”
Four Elements should just be the Monk 3 quarter caster, like the Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster.
With the new one Dnd/play test monk, the dragon monk is going to absolutely slap, doesn’t matter who. Anyone can get the hands. And the feet.
