@@30ART5 I actually really like the idea of a party of dragonborn from the same clan. Do they work together for the clan, or does each one try to outshine the other? Maybe they understand each one has a role to play, and work in tandem, making them the quickest 'rising star' in adventuring parties in the land, lending to the story that lords and ladies from far and wide send missives and messengers with tithes to try and hire them..
One of my favourite characters I've made was a tortle sorcerer who was fascinated by and studied the ways and culture of Dragonborn and his goal was to study, learn about and reach the abeir itself. He has yet to meet that goal Edit: He's done it. He reached Abeir, and said goodbye to his friends as he decided to stay behind
Ooh, imagine your party meets a friendly dragonborn NPC who accompanies them for a while, then at a critical moment it turns out he’s actually a treacherous half-dragon who lost his tail!
Most dwarfs a lawful good or lawful nuetral. As they are related to dragons, Dragonborn tend to feel very passionate about the balance between good and evil, often making them chaotic.
I was playing my first actual game of D&D as a Blue Dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut. We ended up encountering a group of Tiamat worshipers and while walking and interacting with them, my character turned to the cult leader and said, “I will say one thing about the gods... BAHAMUT SENDS HIS REGARDS!” As he drew his +1 long sword and swung for the neck getting double 20’s. As he turned to the other cultist, who still outnumbered the party 2-1 he roared out a battle cry and scared all of them with a 24 (19+5) intimidation roll. BEST CHARACTER MOMENT EVER! All time favorite flavor race!
Very odd, my first character was a silver dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut. I used a greatsword though. Ended up dying holding off a wave of orcish commandos in a narrow pass while the rest of the party escaped. Our rogue later returned to the scene and recovered my armor and brought it to a little church. They made a statue in my likeness wearing my armor. Ended up being a magical barrier protecting the church by a final blessing of Bahamut.

Wait WHAT!? So, your average elf in the party just remembers the time when there were no dragonborns, and just rolls with one in a party, like there's nothing weird about it.
Imagine the conversations. ^^ Dragonborn: "Grandpa says dragons used to rule all, enslaving us, torturing us, treating us with cruelty beyond measure." Elf: "In one of my first lives, I remember we fought the dragons for this realm. With great magic and great numbers, we defeated them, but it also cracked the earth and the very weave of existence." Dragonborn: "Good riddance. Did you just say; "one of your past lives"? How many times have you lived?" Elf: "Oh, 20-25 times, by now?" Dragonborn: "Do elves die really young, or something?" ^^
@@snoopcat9351 Why not use a pick/plectrum? Zithers are common among many human cultures all around the world. Random thought: A silver or steel dragon decides to check out the new guys on the block about a decade or so after they show up, doing the whole "disguised as one of them" thing. After 80 or so years of living among the dragonborn, the dragon gets found out and is forced to reveal their true form - perhaps it's because they had a kid with a dragonborn and the kid turned out to be half-dragonborn, half silver or steel dragon. But the dragon has already befriended several generations of multiple clans and has been incredibly helpful among dragonborn society. What happens? I could see this being a pretty interesting turn of events within dragonborn society. The die-hard traditionalists could argue that this is just an attempt to get on their good side in order to eventually enslave the dragonborn again, while the more open-minded dragonborn, along with the friends the dragon made during their stay, would argue that this is evidence that dragons are far different in this strange, new world.

The Dragon Overlord's are practically the definition of selfish cruelty, caring nothing for thier slaves and thralls, only that they follow thier orders without question.
For those interested in dragonborn as a race I suggest Erin M. Evan's Brimstone Angels series. It's focused on a pair of Tiefling twins taken in by an exiled Dragonborn and the last book in the series focus' heavily on Djerad Thymar and the dragonborn in general as a second Spellplague starts to sweep over Toril and a revived Deity try's to become their patron god.
"Dragonborn colors don't match their ancestry. Dragonborn do not have tails." I recognize that the council has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid ass decision I've elected to ignore it.
"Dragonborn colors don't match their ancestry." It's not impossible for a dragonborn to have scales matching its ancestry, it's simply that they're so interbred that there are no clearly defined dragonborn subraces like there are dragon subraces.
My first experience with a dragonborn was in 5e. 1st char I made. As far as I know I never bent or changed the info about them, but it was agreed on that dragonborn have tails and breast. Scales always indicated (like dragons) thier alignment. Unless you are playing one trying to go against the norm. So I am a OoA paladin Dragonborn White dragonborn who is actually out there doing good. In the backstory of my village we are a oddity , our village doesn't bend to extremes and base things on actions not words. They are farmers right on the outside of a giant Tropical Rain Forest. Inside the forest lies a way to reach the Ancients paladins, the dragonborn village kinda sees to it that no one enters the forest except them and have them as honored guest. My particular village had long ago helped the Ancients Paladins who work with Suriel "Goddess of the Silver Moon" aka (The Brighter Moon) protecting nature. (The Goddess was basically like a dispatcher, sending the Ancients in directions when they need to get somewhere by relaying info in dreams.) (Other than that Ancients just roamed the lands doing good.) It is a high honor to be recruited and trained as such a paladin. So high honor to join them, so much so the village will have the family's crest put on a shield to give them. That way they can proudly show off, again only a newly crested Dragonborn in the order can carry one. Betraying the order betrays the Dragonborn Clan 1st and foremost and the pledge they gave so long ago, you betray the Order and then the Goddess herself. In this campaign dynamic normal dragonborn villages that couldn't resolve a issue in thier own clan's as a last resort (before outsiders) would be sent to the village to seek help. (Because our village was a outcast to the normal way Dragonborn think and behave, so since we are the last civilization out that way) It is common to rare or uncommon species pass through the village on thier way to anywhere but the forest. So my dragonborn has mainly only interacted with Dragonborn, Centaurs, Minitour's, Sprites, Aerokokra, Yuan ti etc... (have had to deal with a occasional Displacer Beast) So it was different to deal with races that have only rarely been seen around as a member of the Ancients.
Playing a Lawful Good Dragonborn Cleric/Mage aligned to Bahumt has been the most fun i´ve ever had so far in DnD. I just love the Race and the Lore behind them
Most of what you described in the first half of this video is accurate as of 4e, but doesn't take into account more recent developments during the Sundering. Many dragonborn (or Vayemniri, as they prefer to call themselves) are still extremely sceptical of gods and dragons, even metallic dragons. But after an ancient Untheran god helped them defeat an army of demons and to survive in Toril post-Sundering rather than being shunted back to Abeir, a lot of vayemniri are now coming around to the idea of gods not necessarily being so bad. They just treat the relationship between mortal and god as a transaction: prayers in return for miracles, instead of being about the mortal _serving_ the god, which is how they believe most worshipping works. Children don't just go with the parent who is the same gender. Vayemniri use mating for political reasons, and they come up with an agreement (called a _qallim_) around many different aspects, one of which is how many eggs each clan gets. It's worth Googling "Playing a Dragonborn in the Realms, Part 3: The next generation " for an excellent article written by a WotC author and trained anthropologist for details on how dragonborn politics works. She has many more articles about dragonborn stuff on her site, too.

Yeah, more exotic races can be fun to play but more often than not we default to playing like humans because that's who we are. I see playing a fantasy race as the ultimate role-play challenge of walking in another's shoes, sometimes with completely cultural values and alien mindsets. Videos like this are helpful for researching how to succeed in doing so.
It's worth noting though that worship of Bahamut and the Platinum Cadre are, according to the novels, slowly becoming more accepted in Tymanther to the point where some of the more old fashioned clans are starting to employ their priests. Times be a-changing.
If not by the religion thing, like the opinion of a dwarf about moradin, unless It is a Duregar, Will differ greatly from the opinion of a dragonborn about Bahamut

I originally thought how dragonborns came to be is from one legendary bard who dared to roll 20s to everything by smashing a dragon and lived to tell the tale xD
One of the Drizzt novels features Jarlaxle meeting two shapeshifted copper dragons. The book basically stops just short of directly saying that they have a threesome more than once.
I'm curious why the 3.5e Dragonborn never got a mention? Dragonborn have been around far longer than the last 100 years. However instead of being a race that is born naturally, they were individuals very specifically chosen by Bahamut to be his champions. They were also very highly respected by all metallic dragons for that very reason. A Dragonborn's only purpose was to slay evil dragons in Bahamut's name. THOSE Dragonborn were truly rare, as you had to be specifically chosen by a god, and if you accept his gift, perform the ritual to become one.
Hey, you. You're finally awake. You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that thief over there.

"Abeir is the planet is where the dragonborn were actually born." Krynn: "Am I a joke to you?" I'd also like to point out why it's nonsense that 5th edition only has one campaign world. The lack of a weave, or the death of Mystra, would have virtually NO impact anywhere outside of Faerun. Considering that the dragonborn and dragons had magic, regardless of not being on Toril, should have given every wizard on Toril pause. Elminster: "Wait....wait wait wait...what do you MEAN there's no weave on Abeir?" Older dragonborn: "Ya...no idea what the hell you're talking about." Elminister: "But...how do you use magic?! You NEED the weave!!" Older dragonborn: "Nah, bro. Magic is everywhere. Your weave is some old school nonsense. Git gud, bro." Elminster:
Abeir is basically a plot tumor. 4e made a lot of changes to the status quo of the Realms in order to force it to conform to their "points of light" design philosophy, so they used the Spellplague to wreck civilization to fit with that, then made up Abeir's existence overlapping with Toril in the same dimensional space and the Spellplague causing the two to partially merge to explain where a bunch of things, including Dragonborn, came from, because they were in the 4e core books and therefore had to exist in the Realms by WOTC's logic. You can't really expect consistency from something with that kind of origin. It was hugely unpopular, which is why 5e started by unmerging them and never mentioned Abeir again unless absolutely necessary to explain something else (like Dragonborn).
Isn't it said that the weave is simply something to make Natural magic useable by wizards etc. or something? (Like if I remember correctly the spell plague had magic involved through the fire described in the books not to mention if the weave was the source of all magic in D&D wouldn't that mean that all of the Magical creatures would have died during the spell plague?) For all intents and purposes there could logically speaking be magic on abier and having it be used by the dragon born despite there being no weave

I'd like to know more about Half-Dragons. Their page on the Monster Manual says they can be created by a ritual, which includes bathing in dragon blood?
My best dragonborn sorcerer moment, we were infiltrating a cloud giant castle and as the rogue was trying to figure out how to unlock the door I say "we are not going to levitate you! We are spellcasters! I cast Knock!" ... and my DM gave me the look on his face saying that just happened in character and promptly rolls a stealth check. The castle was passing through storms and lightning struck the sky at the moment my character knocked the door open. No one notices. I didn't know anything else about dragonborn except what is in the player's handbook so now I know it was so well in character. Really cool finding out about the Platinum Cadre, the campaign was Rise of Tiamat. It was basically the character arc i was trying to make, and now I have perfect lore reasoning to go for Paladin Sorcerer multiclass.

I was playing my first actual game of D&D as a Blue Dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut. Very odd, my first character was a silver dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut. I used a greatsword though. Ended up dying holding off a wave of orcish commandos in a narrow pass while the rest of the party escaped.

"Dragonborn colors don't match their ancestry.
Dragonborn do not have tails."
I recognize that the council has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid ass decision I've elected to ignore it.
Y E S
That's my response when someone says that my dragonborn can't mate with a human.

It's worth Googling "Playing a Dragonborn in the Realms, Part 3: The next generation
" for an excellent article written by a WotC author and trained anthropologist for details on how dragonborn politics works. She has many more articles about dragonborn stuff on her site, too.

I'm currently running a campaign loosely based on the forgotten realms (though the bulk of it is on a homebrew region based on Brazil) and this video gave some ideas on how to handle my "Dragonborn" player's story and journey. Since he does mention and believe in Bahamut, and has a tail, I think I might know what to do with him now. No spoilers, obviously, but now I have great plans for you, Slyrak Thunderfang.
What They Don't Tell you About Kobolds Pls! Best dragons of them all!
Koff koff boom boom koff koff
He already made one.
As a half-dragon, its getting more and more irritating to tell people i'm not a "dragonborn" they don't even belong here, can we send them back? i mean they dont even have tails!
As a dragonborn, I say No Im staying. I did my inter-dimensional immigration paper work for a reason.
Build a wall around the portals to abier and deport those fake dragons
i am writing this social-commentary infused setting as i read the comments keep em comin'
@@MsQuikly so yer tellin me that dragonborns are basically honor-bound, scaly mexicans and half dragons are entitled liberals/baby boomers?
@@ironcupcake6149 exactly, but us dragonborn are more like refugees fleeing subjugation from the dragon overlords.
13:08 That dragon girl though. Damn.
Soporific Rift indeed
ah, a man of culture I see.

There's no mercy for horn(y) dogs.
"Abeir is the planet is where the dragonborn were actually born."
Krynn: "Am I a joke to you?"
I'd also like to point out why it's nonsense that 5th edition only has one campaign world. The lack of a weave, or the death of Mystra, would have virtually NO impact anywhere outside of Faerun. Considering that the dragonborn and dragons had magic, regardless of not being on Toril, should have given every wizard on Toril pause.
Elminster: "Wait....wait wait wait...what do you MEAN there's no weave on Abeir?"
Older dragonborn: "Ya...no idea what the hell you're talking about."
Elminister: "But...how do you use magic?! You NEED the weave!!"
Older dragonborn: "Nah, bro. Magic is everywhere. Your weave is some old school nonsense. Git gud, bro."
Elminster:
Technically species created on Krynn is known as Draconians, not Dragonborn.
Draconians and Dragonborn are different creatures.
Made a silver Dragonborn. Divine soul sorcerer (direct descendant of Bahamut). Protected through childhood by the platinum cadre from the occultists of Tiamat. With each level 1/20 of his scales became platinum. It’s nice to see a lot of what I found compiled like this. ❤️
I'd like to know more about Half-Dragons. Their page on the Monster Manual says they can be created by a ritual, which includes bathing in dragon blood?
0:06 Woah, woah, woah. There is also other draconic playable race. The one that was there since day 1! I mean Kobolds of course.
Once you end with dragons, have you considered talking about giants? You can extend them too talking about firbolgs and goliaths
Don’t forget trolls and ogres which are also giant types.
My best dragonborn sorcerer moment, we were infiltrating a cloud giant castle and as the rogue was trying to figure out how to unlock the door
I say "we are not going to levitate you! We are spellcasters! I cast Knock!"
... and my DM gave me the look on his face saying that just happened in character and promptly rolls a stealth check.
When he mentioned the gems and their armour, I was hearing:
So you wanna be a pimp,
But your mail ain't fly...
"I heard you like spiked weapons, so we put spikes on your shield, so now you can attack _while_ you parry!"
Thank you! I've been trying to research the history of this race for ages now. My dragonborn barbarian needed a more clearer explanation of how his people came to the forgotten realms.
This video was great!!!! I think I have decent lore of forgotten realms but this was an eye opener into how to role play a dragonborn far more accurately. Thank you!
Lol it's like Dragon born are the Klingons of Toril. Great work on this one. You are a true lore master.
Except Klingons higher ups are corrupt schemers who are only looking for personal gain and glory.
Fey make promises? That's hilarious, never trust the fey.
they do but you better be counting
They'll give you exactly what they say they will.
And you were never seen or heard from again.
Fey cannot lie. Anything they say that is straight forward can be taken as truth. That is rare.
Fey are bound to their word but only to the letter of the word not the intent behind it.
@@chrisdupuis2523 this can be used against them as well, like if they make a deal with you to do something, but aren't specific about the details, you can pretend you misunderstood the intent behind the words and do something else
I've never been into the dragonborn, but man, this is amazing. I really wanna play one now. Next campaign maybe:)
