I had a similar experience (as Dr. Stanley had) decades ago, when I was about 25. A girl I just started dating invited me to her house. We played piano and sang, enjoying ourselves. Then some of her friends came over and they all decided to get high (smoke weed). I was clean and wanted to remain so. I COULD have stayed and just hung out, abstaining, but I would have felt uncomfortable. And I imagine they might have too because this was long before it was widely accepted or legal. She tried to convince me to stay but I was content to let them go ahead and have fun, no problem. We could get together another time. She was visibly disappointed. In my heart, this was not a 'deal breaker' but what happened next was. We said our goodbyes at the door and as I stepped off her porch, the door slammed! violently behind me. It ended our courtship. But I consider myself lucky that I learned early on the kind of person she was. LESSON LEARNED: It is our "values" that make us who we are, and with whom we are compatible.

May the God of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ deliver, redeem, and set us free from the spirit and desire to please others above and apart from Him. The fear of man is a snare. Therefore, may our heart and affection be set upon Almighty God. In Jesus name, amen.

I have lived in this season trying to live for people's approval and thanks to the Word of God and its truth, It has helped me focus that I am loved by God and that I don't need to put my approval in others but that it needs to be in God first. Read Galatians 1:10. For anyone who is interested.

Thank you very enlightening. Very true, when we accept Jesus Christ, our "New lives need to be a radical departure from the ways of this world." We need to let the LORD teach us our paths and not compromise obedience for approval of people who won't even care. We need to reside in God's will.
Im no expect but i always try to think and say "Some of these people will not be with me whe im 70 yrs old or 80 yrs old(God willing) BUT God will be with me for eternity. Care about him more. Its tough i know. I struggle as well.

So, what happened with the friends? Did they stop being Charles Stanley's friend after that? And, DID Charles Stanley ever see them again? Also, what about our legacy? Isn't trying to leave a good legacy still considered our trying to seek the approval of others? And, is trying to get a job or a wife still considered trying to seek the approval of others? Because, we have to be seen in our best light for our legacy to be considered, by others, to be good, and we have to be seen in our best light to convince an employer to hire us, or to convince a woman to marry us. So, is that the same thing as trying to seek approval, or does that fall under a different category? What other category would it fall under, and how?
