International students could study in the United States on an F1, J1, or M1 student visa. In this video, you will understand who one can get each of these US student visa classes and the limitations of each of these US student visas.
To apply for the F1 or M1 student visa, you will need to first obtain a Form I-20 from your prospective university. This is an immigration document issued by U.S. Schools certified by a United States Government Agency. This document is usually issued after you have received an admission offer AND provided an evidence of financial support for your U.S. education.
Similarly, to apply for the J1 visa, you will need to obtain a Form DS-2019 from your J1 sponsor, which is usually given after you show proof of funds to cover your education in the U.S. J1 sponsors are certified to issue the Form DS-2019 by a US Government Agency.
F1 visa international students can also bring their dependents such as a spouse and child/children to the United States using the F-2 visa. However, dependents on an F-2 visa can not work in the United States.
Similarly J1 visa holders can bring dependent spouses and children on the J2 visa. These dependents are allowed to work in the US after receiving a work authorization.

Working on a series of videos for F1 visa interviews, I have a lot to say about this topic. Biggest mistake I see is that applicants are not knowledgeable about their intended program of study. So don't make that mistake. Apart from that, here are a few tips for now:
      1. Be organized with your documents - Visa interviews are very short and Consular officers don't have much time to spend on one applicant.
      2. Answer questions truthfully and concisely - I see this mistake all the time, where applicants talk too much when answering questions. That's understandable, as when we get nervous, we talk too much. But this is not a good thing here, as everything you say is being judged. So try to keep calm, answer the questions as briefly as possible.
      3. Maintain eye contact when answering questions - Depending on what culture you come from this might be difficult to do, as in some cultures maintaining eye contact with an authority figure is seen as being disrespectful. This is not the case with Americans though. Poor eye contact, especially when done in a formal setting is seen as being dishonest. In other words, your words need to match your body language. What you say is just as important as what your body is communicating.
      Best of Luck!
