A Traditional Feast with a Somali Refugee Family

  • Опубліковано 18 жов 2011
  • The San Diego neighborhood of City Heights has been nicknamed "the refugee capital of America." Last year, local resettlement workers assisted more than 5,000 new arrivals to San Diego; and most of them ended up in the neighborhood. Among the many things these newcomers have had to adjust is their diet.
From our Fronteras Desk, Ruxandra Guidi introduces us to a refugee family that is finding a way to navigate between food traditions, good health, and an American lifestyle.

Ma Sha Allah. I'm an American female married to a somali male. The food is very tasty espically around Eid it gets better because certain foods are made around those 2 days. I'm just now learning how to cook somali food and its very hard for me to control my eating on it. I'm trying to watch what I eat but it is very hard to do that with Somali food. You can bake instead of fried but its still very high in Carbs. May Allah conitune to protect each and every brother and sister.

Another case of somalian men marry non somalian women, they marry out and mix leaving women to raise their kids, all the somalis I know in Minnesota, dads left them to start another family.

xx MIYA xx so apparently Naya is a swear word and it’s worse then “fuck” and “bitch”. Your basically saying naya which translates to woman or girl, and you’re a girl. Yeah no wonder why us Somalis typically have 68 iq.

I'm an American married to an awesome Somali woman that grew up in the UK. All my nieces and nephews are the same way, they prefer western foods like burgers and pizza rather than traditional Somali foods. I grew up on western foods, but I prefer Somali foods lol. In Sha Allah (if it be the will of Allah), they'll learn to appreciate they're cultural heritage as they grow older.

technically somalis are part of hamitic branch of caucasian race, you need to ask us if your skin color bothers us and the answers is no, we are not insecure like that, usually is the somali women who marry out side the race, however only somali fathers children are considered full somali regardless of the mothers race, make sure your children know their culture, language, tribe lineage, they've inheritance which is a land, that is if your husband is somali descendent of samale.

Of course the kids will like American junk food; greasy/fatty, salty or sweet and popular. The Somali food looks much more nutritious and DELICIOUS. If AMerican kids ate like these Somali, they wouldn't be OBESE> They'd be slim and active like these children. In America we need more lean meats and plenty colorful vegetables, LESS sodas.

From what i read in your comment you seem to be muslim Allahu akbar. And i hope you and your husband stay strong because sadly ignorance is rampant even among somalis. So i hope if you get ignorant comments that you ignore it. But the stars that will probably everywhere you go more or less.
