In this video I head out wild camping up on Haystacks in the Lake District with filmmaker and fellow UA-camr, Stephen Reid. The trip had been planned a while and the forecast was a little windy, but rain was not supposed to be a worry as the forecast was for around 1mm around 10pm. As usual, things didn't go to plan and the rain came down in bucket loads. To top things off....my new tent failed at the seams and lets say...things got a bit wet. I hope you enjoy.

I had a similar problem with LanShan 1 Pro. It was battered about by wind and alot of condensation inside.
That opening sequence is something I would expect to see in a movie. Great video as always!
Pitching in a natural drainage spot is probably asking for trouble.
Ugh, what a nightmare! This, among other things, is why I just won't do flys that don't reach the ground, anymore; not just to block all the rain & splashback, but also because keeping the wind out = keeping the flapping down + also keeps me warmer.

Was in me mates MLD cricket up on the brecons Saturday evening. Had a lot of rain in the morning,but nothing came in,so he said. I was in my £12.00 Lidl tent and as dry as a bone.

Hmm Two lad used a Duomid to do the first winter crossing (2015 I think) of the PCT 2663 miles,they took MLD Duomid and said they would take it again

Finally got out at the weekend for my Scarp 1’s maiden outing, and my first wild camp since being a kid (it’s been far too long!), thanks to you, as I decided to finally get back to it, after watching your videos.

Have used mids from MLD for over 10 years including the duomid and always seam sealed them myself. Id put this shelter as one of the best on the market. Once you get the picth dialled and add a polycro or tyvek groundsheet you'll be laughing. I use a bivi and groundsheet under an MLD mid. With this config the duomid is overkill for 1p but perfect if you have a dog or partner with you. It's a 2p shelter so will catch the wind more than a 1p shelter like the hilleburge.
A night with not the best weather at all, but a night you will always talk about it, so these kind of moments actually become memories. Also good footage this time. Also your friend is a nice person and yeah we need more videos with him
Not wanting to sound smug but this is why I only ever camp with a goretex bivvy bag, and a poncho or tarp. I have had too many bad experiences with leaky tents, or tents which weren't leaky but pitched inner first, so pitching in the rain meant you had a wet inner. With a poncho/tarp it doesn't matter if water somehow gets in, I'm guaranteed to be dry and warm in my bivvy bag.
I agree about the bivvy bag. Makes any sleeping bag a much nicer place and saves you when the tent fails you. I typically carry a bothy bag and a tarp/poncho too. Being wet and cold on the hill changes camping into a survival situation, and as a friend once said “if you’re in a survival situation, you’re doing it wrong”.
That chest pack looks a handy piece of kit, unless you already have a chest of your own that you can’t see your feet over 🤣

Paul, I have just found your channel and been watching your videos back to back for a week. I live down on london and watching your videos and the locations I know and miss so much has done wonders for my mental health!! This video is so brave of you to post and I hope it helped making it. MLD make very high quality tents. This is definitely not normal. I guarantee MLD would replace it for you without question.
I've used the silnylon trailstar in horrendous weather dry as a bone. Agree with you. Or simply remember where the drips were and add some sealant to it. Good to see a popular UA-camr using MLD even quality products can slip occasionally. Paul will figure it all out he's still learning 😉 😆

Wow. What a difference that opening makes. I know it sucks when the tent leaks but on the other hand it kept a fair bit of water to the outside. Could be worse,ey!
Brave man Paul, using that Pole tent................ Watched both videos and great to see two perspectives of the same wild camp.
Paul, Ron needs to hear about this. They’ve gone for neat seam sealing instead of bombproof. Britain needs bombproof. Any leakage through the seams gets hurled about the tent when a gust strikes so I consider this a serious shortcoming. You might want to mention 146K subscribers but MLD usually give helpful replies and Ron has always replied himself to my few emails. It’s a good job fixing the problem isn’t difficult but, if you’ve paid for a service, it should be correctly. My own Duomid is DCF and I love it.
My Duomid is DCF, I wouldn't trust the nylon ones in the UK, too much wind on exposed hills, the DCF gets a much tighter pitch and doesn't sag when it gets wet.
I was on Fleetwith Pike last Thursday/Friday and the wind was howling through the night! Luckily the rain held off! Great vid as always 👌🏼
Nice one Paul, that rain was non stop, atleast the tent got put thru its paces properly, better to find out it leaks now rather than if you're by yourself with no backup shelter, great video mate 👍

This was actually (ironically) a pretty nice, calming video mate. You've got such a relaxed way of approaching things and that shines through here. A great excursion and video, nice one.
That’s why us oldies still love a double skin tent, do you remember the old force 10 tents, bullet proof but heavy.
They are still around. I saw about twenty of them in use at Ten Tors on Dartmoor last weekend, a classic design.
@@wandering_not_lost probably not the cotton ones surely they were a bugger to keep the mould at bay. Not for the ultra lighter.
@@kennywoods8713 yes, these were cotton. Vango still make and sell the Force ten tent in two different sizes in cotton, you wouldn't want to backpack with one of these though, far too heavy. If you dry them properly before you put them away mould shouldn't be a problem. I help at my local scouts and they have canvas tents that are forty years old and still in usable condition.
Vango Force 10s! Remember those. I remember the first dome tents, the Phazordome, our scout group had 2 but the leaders used to sleep in them on hikes. Also remember those Blacks Good Companion tents? A bright orange pyramid tent which could sleep 3.

Reminds me of a trip to Nantcol. The tent was fine and didn't leak, it is quite cosy hearing the rain when you know you are out of it and sheltered, but not for 48 hours, almost non stop!
The water table was by then above ground level and there was no escape from the mini river, which just flowed its way from back to front and into the main river running through the site.
Only option was pack up and go home and everything was soaked through.
You nearly got a drenching Paul - imagine if the bath tub were inverted. That would make you a wild swimmer. Good going. Mark

That chest rig looks like the Osprey Archeon. I used one on my recent Cumbria Way, doing the mountain route. Great piece of equipment and reasonably priced.
That’s the one! Love it, favourite bit of kit. I was keeping a telephoto lens in it so I could swap without having to take off my huge pack everytimw.
Definitely a wet one. Whenever you get that perfect mix of wind and rain it really makes you appreciate tents that have a fly that goes all the way to the ground! Entertaining as always Paul!
If you shorten the pegging points right down and lower the trekking pole you can nail a mid to the floor. Or go the other way for awesome ventilation on calmer days 👍
@@Joeb4iley yeah I do that with my other tipi tents! I just find it a bit fiddly to get it just right if the ground isn’t completely level. I’ve become spoiled by pole tents I suppose. The Tipi design definitely can give the best of both worlds though 👍. As long as the inner doesn’t become too loose when lowering the outer to the ground.

Sorry about the leaking wig wam! You mentioned seam sealing it yourself. I found when seam sealing a Lanshan I used Gear Aid grip sil (Silnet). Mix about a third of the tube in a small container with a little white spirit to achieve a Consistency of runny honey. Using the small brush supplied with the sealant, and wipe off any ‘mistakes’ with a clean cloth with white spirit . You will end up with a lot neater job. Plus a a WWW. (Waterproof Wig Wam) ATB
Great video! I can’t tell you how similar your experience has been to my experience. I was a big fan of the dd hammock pyramid super light XL but in weather it was a complete arse. The little mesh room feels cold even on a hot day and everything ends up damp in the slightest of rain. On a warm day it’s a dream but I ended buying a southern cross 2 after having a major falling out with it. Thanks for the video! Great as always.
Hi Paul- that was a bit of a slightly draughty location! Not the best of situations to pitch a flimsy lightweight tent!
The earl;y part of your vid reminded me of the day I pitched my budget Lichfield Scorpion 2** in the 'relative' calm and within four hours it was blowing a gale and a thunderstorm then lit up the lent like a light bulb.I felt like a crazy (but somehow happy) man, cooking my dinner in the tiny porch.
I loved the feeling of fragile security as the tent took all the knocks the weather could throw at it.
Thankfully, even with a mild dribble of a nearby stream developing into a raging torrent and the rest of the field being sodden and hideous with wet, i had chosen the one spot that remained unsaturated due to being a slight 'pimple' above the rest which was like the ground you illustrated in the vid. Boggy!. Talk about providence.
That was more than 1mm of 'soft refreshings'!! More like 1cm!! At least!
i know that the 'tough gigs' can be daunting but isn't it great to get through them and look back?
i guess, being from the 'Emerald Isle', Stephen is used to moisture. He certainly found out that we in the UK Mainland are not exempt from it.
WHAT IS IT WITH STEAK?
OK, it really tastes the business (we all know that) but it makes me feel that we on this side of the pond are getting the same idea as the Yanks, that Steak is the be all and end all,* Over there, they are happy for the S American Rain Forests to be slaughtered for SHORT-TERM prairies for their indecent appetite for the above. I'm still an old-fashioned aficionado of the English bacon and/or sausage, egg and beans with anything that is at hand (the more handy, the merrier).
As for the tent in the video, I'd ebay it tomorrow.

Best way of testing....rain and plenty of it, I'm doing the same at weekend with Trekkertent Drift 1 going up to Glen Nevis at Penny Pass, see how we go, expecting rain. I carry a Bivvy Bag just in case.

Someones been on a video editing course 😍 Ive just been away for the weekend, camping to see friends with the wife. Decent site, went by car so we had duvets and pillows. I slept like a log.

I bet you were dreaming of all the other options on your tent shelf all night. I'd happily carry my Quasar up there for an overnighter in those conditions for the piece of mind. Good review of the ThermaRest as a lilo, pleased you didn't float off downstream 🤣
my mate has the MLD duo and he's used shock cord to connect the inner to the outer so makes the pitch a lot faster and easier so might be food for thought. gutted about those seams. I have ordered a liteway tent thats a similar design
The weather might have been bad but the views of that steak butty were spectacular oh and the lakes were'nt bad either
looks like the stitching may need some sealing from the inside as well 😳 …. pyramid style tents can be tricky to set up …. i start by pegging out the back to form a triangle … then putting the trekking pole in the center then pegging out the zippered door … then putting in the pegs on the remaining corners … it goes up quickly first time …. pegging out all four corners first time just doesn’t work … well not for me anyway … camping in weather like that is just a miserable experience… thanks for sharing your adventure 👍👍
I've had $40 Coleman tents that kept me warm and dry in an all-night deluge, and I did not seam seal or water seal. Tents that leak in 2022 PISS ME OFF

All the hillberg and solou comments yet on the hilleberg Facebook page lots of people are complaining about leaks too. These things happen and they can be resolved. For me, this is not a wild camping video, it’s a click bait moan with very little content and you would have had as much water in your new rab tent in the same conditions if you had wanted to eat or needed to check the lines. Please return to making valued content instead of the recent material you have uploaded.
I'd have buggered off along to dubs hut or warnscale bothy if my tent leaked and I was up that way! Bad luck paul, it happens to the best of us!
This type of tent is great in conditions that barely require a tent at all. The Lake district is a great place to test how truly waterproof your kit setup. Great frying pan, recently bought one, loving the coating and overall design. Look forward to seeing what your next tent is, though I haven't found a truly remarkable tent that weighs under 3kg yet.
Nemo Kunai 2p 😁 The reason I'd suggest my Nemo as remarkable is down to it being a tent that can be used in the mountains, it'll take heavy weather, it has 4 (extra) guy lines that attach directly to the inner pole structure which when the wind starts to hit 40mph + becomes really useful. It has enough pole cross over to take snow loading and crosswinds, and lastly the inner mesh panels can be zipped and covered over in seconds so that no spin drift or fine snow can enter the tent. The same panels can be completely opened up for summer air flow. It's also a 2kg tent . Beat that!! ( @greenpanda it's not a cheap tent but it's also not up there with Hilleberg pricing, if you can afford to try one out I couldn't recommend it enough. It's a bit short on pegs and cord out of the bag, but that seems to be the way of most 'premium' tents over the last two decades and I wouldn't lose sleep over it.)

@@RebelRDX I will check it out, thanks. When I said remarkable, I suppose I meant without any immediate obvious flaws. For example, the Hilleberg Akto is a very impressve 1.7kg, 4 season tent with great stability and ventilation options, but still condensation is an issue and internal height is a factor.
@@greenpanda7121 Ugh the Akto. They never look 'right' even after spending most of the evening adjusting the guy lines! Always want to sag somewhere. I've never met anyone interesting who used a Hilleberg they are always so serious 😂
@@RebelRDX It is very similar to a lightweight Jannu. Maybe more versatile, less wind stable, but with a very angular vestibule which leaves usable space for cooking/storage limited. I guess that comes down to personal preference though, what works for some doesn't work for others.
This shows why the current trend of lightweight tents really aren't made for the British weather.

Was tempted to make a smart arsed comment such as Prior Preparation Prevents P*** Poor Performance, always expect the unexpected, prepare for all eventualities, be prepared, etc etc etc. But I won't. I love rain in the Fells, make me feel alive. And thanks you for reminding me why one should never buy a tent that needs seam sealing!
Lesson learned Phil. I paid MLD to seam seal it in the factory. You would think they would have done a better job than me but they made a piss poor effort. I’ll Sean seal it myself this week.
@@PaulMessner Hi Paul I would really recommend you to use a poleconnector and two trekkingpoles. Just take two aluminium tubes and connect them with a piece of gardenhose. Then you avoid the irritating centerpole, and at the same time make the tent much more stable. It is a little tricky to set up the tent the first couple of times, but after that it’s a breeze. Please don’t give up on it - it’s the best tent I have ever had. Thanks for one more of your videoes - a great pleasure every time... 😃 Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰

I have a £45 Vango Soul 200 used it dozens of times in heavy rain at Motorcycle race meetings. Give it a spray of Fabsil a few weeks before using and it never leaks.
Tip. Lengthen pole a tad or loosen line at back especially back left and tighten front lines to help tighten that rear corner. You don't want that corner as loose as that. When I took my DD pyramid I wasn't sure how good sealing was so took a tube and whacked a bit on from inside on two spots then when stopped raining put a dab outside opposite and that sorted it. Although I'd not expect that in your situation... looks like just a few spots so just do the bits that leaked hopefully not all needs doing again. Interesting camp. What day were you in lakes? I was camping there Wednesday to Saturday three nights got lucky no rain lol

I wonder if you could recommend a good head-torch?
There's such a huge variety and price range on offer that it might even be worth it's own video? (apologies if you've already covered the subject).
I have no complaints about my old torch (make unknown) but the headband is losing it's elasticity and you sometimes have to give it a knock. It takes 3x AAA cells integral in the unit, high beam, lower beam and red led, fine around a camp and as a back-up but it's time for something a bit more serious.
Like most people, price is definitely a consideration but when buying gear (as with tools) I believe in getting the right 'stuff'
and even if you weep a bit at the price, you will only cry once and you will always have good gear.
Buy cheap 'shite' and it will be, well cheap 'shite' that you always have to live with!
Very interested to hear your suggestions, maybe cover the 'cheap and cheerful', more costly but def worth it and the very expensive that really you probably only need on serious expeditions like to the arctic or high mountains etc.
If you're still awake and reading this (sorry, brevity was never my strong-point) I'm thinking rechargeable might be the way to go, more than likely with battery pack separate from the actual light?
I like the idea of a powerful long beam in addition to a wider close up illumination for general purpose 'camp stuff' and getting around, so maybe some kind of dual system?
Lastly, endurance is an important consideration for many reasons (see, I didn't list them!).

I’ll never understand why people don’t use tent footprints. They keep you and the tent dry and make the vestibule so much more liveable. And they weigh less than a can of beer that everyone seems to think is essential camping gear.

What’s a tent footprint? Is it an American thing? Never heard of them
@@StoutProper A tent footprint is a piece of waterproof material that goes under the floor of the inner tent and possibly some of the vestibule. Smaller dimension than the inner to keep water from the floor and protect the bottom from wear. Made of plastic, silicone treated fabric, dyneema, tyvek, cut down shower curtains, etc. Like many pieces of gear, has pros and cons and is not cure for bad site selection but can make it more tolerable. Usually.
