- Wild camping in Snowdonia - I struggled with the scramble
Here’s the link to the tent 3fulgear.com/p...
This was a challenging wild camping trip to Snowdonia for me. The scramble up Rhinog Fawr was tough. The rocks were loose and very unstable underfoot. I don’t like this kind of terrain at the best of times and was certainly out of my comfort zone. The views up top were epic though so well worth the effort to get up there.
Check out Andrew Beavers and The Lone Explorer (Scott) for some great footage of the trip

"Short cuts" always have a cost, usually something like you just showed. But, well done! You made it safely and the payoff was stunning! Thanks again for the video, Paul.
Mountains always have a way of turning a great day serious, and I often can go into a different mindset when things aren't properly going to plan. Always good to take a step back and never take the mountains for granted and give them the respect they are due.
Great vid as always Paul
😂 The slo-mo camera 😂. I was with you there Paul. I was feeling slightly queasy just watching the video. Nice one - well done 👍🏼💪🏼
I was definitely feeling the nerves on that bit. We came down an easier route
Another great one Paul, you seem to be looking happier and im so glad you found friends to go on your adventures with, thanks for taking me out into the wilderness for 11 minutes
Great video Paul, chocolates for breakfast - and why not! Hope you're keeping well mate, snowdonia looks stunning. Si
Cheers si. Hope you're good mate
@@PaulMessner all very well mate, new job / a few other things. Back out v soon!
Good to see you back and looking well again
Hallin fell has me close to tears .....Another cracking video paul balls of steel climbing that mate but with epic views , always appreciate your time taking us along all the best marra 😃🏕⛰
Great video again paul. I Went hiking for 1st time in snowdonia in May loved it . Will be wild camping next time, good to have somewhere else apart from the peaks and the lakes to go to within 2 hrs journey
Great video and well done on the scrambling and for pushing through your comfort zone. 💪Nice one Paul 👏👏
Thanks Paul for a excellent video with Scott and Andy enjoyed watching and great views thanks Paul 😊 👍
That scramble was definitely tough going, well done mate
Enjoyed that Paul. Beautiful scenery mate. Nice one 😊
Thanks 👍
Great video, really enjoyed that. The Rhinogs are tough, but the views are worth the effort.
M&M's for breakfast you bet !!!!, 2 bags of them in your dry canteen so they won't get smashed but you will hear it every step. Scramble no gloves ? But no snakes in the holes. Great video, So quiet it sucks the sound out of your head. Love it.
Beautiful spot!!
Enjoyed that Paul, fantastic pitch with superb views all round. Liked the look of that tent your mate had.
Incredible camping spot and well done Mr Messner for not losing it on the 'short cut'.
Brilliant video Paul 👌
That was a bit twitchy bum on that bolder ascent haha.
Amazing views and you seem happier which is great.
❤️👍
Enjoyed that Paul, see that Beavo had you off piste again 😂. Looks a seriously great place despite the way up. TFS David 👍
So glad you mentioned Portmadog in the distance. I used to holiday there on the beach at Black Rock Sands. Oh the memories.
HOLY scramble from hell BATMAN!..
This episode is brought to you by the letter "F" 😉
If scrambling isn't your thing, stay clear Paul..nerves cause more injuries than anything.
Glad you made it up safely 👍
Cracking that Paul. Had me in stitches at the start… “slow mo camera on my a#$hole” 😂🤣 good effort that though mate. I’m not great at all with scrambles and heights. Fair play to you. Looked a good trip. ATB. Craig
Got to give it to you Paul! Holding that Tri-pod all the way up that shortcut 😂
Great video Paul, hard slog getting to the top for the mind and body. Such a fantastic location.
Hi Paul, you should have titled this one "Near death experience on Snowdonia"🤣😂...Another great video mate, nice one🙏
Absolutely loved this, Mate. Great to see you out of the Peak District. Scrambling can be very un-nerving, you need both hands free, but you did it. I'd love to see more of this kind of content. Only thing wrong with this video is it's only 11 minutes long! Smashing stuff, Paul. Keep it up!
Oh, wow! what a great landscape. Wish I was there. Thank you, Paul. Really enjoyed watching your route-finding adventure.
My favorite hills in Wales! Tough climbs, great views!
M&M’s the cornerstone of every nutritious breakfast 👌👏
This was the first of your videos I've seen Paul, and I enjoyed it. Love the spot too! I've camped a few times around here and it's always pretty special
That looked like a very hard climb up there Paul but definitely worth the effort stunning views the new tent is looking great atvb jimmy 😎😎👍👍
That looks like an amazing trip and camp. Those views are just beyond belief.
Absolutely astonishing scenes on the climb up
Nothing worse than finding yourself on a bit of mountain you didn’t expect or want. You can’t turn back and going up looks sketchy so you just knuckle down and get through it. Well done!
Glad you like my part of the world, it is abit special. The Rhinogs are tuff but the solitude more than makes up.
And here was me thinking he was related to Reinhold MESSNER! 😭😂👍
haha. basically the same DNA with a few minor differences 😂
Paul I love your videos. I just wish they were longer
Probably doesn't matter, but on the 3FUL website pictures that smaller cross pole actually sits above the 2 bigger poles
Yep, keep saying this, but no one listens...lol
Great content and it looks like you are back to your best.
Lol looked one of my trips at that start fare play fella 🤣
Oi Paul, you’re in my spot!
Beautiful isn’t it mate, great to see you guys getting up there.
I filmed a trip there once too, it’s called Alone in the Badlands, had a spectacular cloud inversion. Wonderful. And yes, I took the exact same “shortcut” 🤪
Was good to see you struggle… in the nicest way, love this sort of content from you Paul.
Fair play to you.
8:12 that beautiful spot is Rhinog Fach in the left, Y Llethr on the right, and Llyn Hywel below, lovely route. Shameless plug while I’m at it, I filmed a trip there too, it’s called Alone in the Rhinogydd, 3 days with a night summit camping on both of those peaks.
On that occasion I spent the full 3 days from leaving the car to getting back to the car without seeing a single person! No one. Maybe it’ll be busier next time after Andy dragged you up there? Hahahaha
Very cinematic videos. I just suscribed
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Cheers!
Another great video mate, great climb and views. Well done 👍🏼
Wow, I love watching all of your adventures, but this really made me want to travel and do a camping trip in the UK. I love seeing what other parts of the world have to offer. You live in a beautiful place. Glad you got up that rocky patch safely!
I do love the Welsh mountains. The big question is "would you go that way again given the choice?" 😆 Well done getting up there, it looked seriously sketchy in parts.
Awesome video Paul, really stunning views they do say the best views come from the hardest climbs! And congrats on the 150k👌👏🍺
They are a great range for not seeing to many people, good chance of sliding your leg / foot between rocks though. good to see you in Wales😃
Great stuff Paul.
Well done Paul, that looked a proper nerve jangler!
So incredibly stark!
Good one Paul. I like the view. Hope you got down ok, it looked a bit tough climbing up that hill.
Did Rhinog fawr, Bach and difwys over two days, very few paths but as you saw fantastic views
Great to see you enjoying a bit of a Snowdon scramble. Nice camping gear, but you were brave to be using trail runners on that rocky ground. I find they let me feel too many lumps and bumps, vibrant soled Scapas for me.
Great video. I don't think people realise how tough going down is if you're knees are worn. Took me much longer to get down Tryfan than to scramble up it!
Definitely, I was a broken man coming back down from Cadair idris 🤣
Nothing beats the satisfaction of getting there after a grueling path.
Another great video Paul. Would love to see you woodland camping sometime
Your tent was masssivvvveee 🙂🙂
“Slow mo camera on my arsehole”🤣🤣🤣 I am not sure I would have persevered with that one!
Nice one Paul, I know that wobbly legs feeling, looked like a tough climb up, not helped by the weight which also throws the balance off. Wicked views though, totally worth it! 😁
ATB, 🙎🏻♀️&🐕
The slow mo cam comment made me laugh a lot. Great location for a pitch up
Bloody hell. Good fitness test 💪
Cracked me up when you mentioned the slow Mo camera 😂
Amazing views Paul! Scrambling up looked like some hard work... hope the way down wasn't too bad in the end.
Epic pitch! Another good watch 👍
Nice video Paul, thanks. Scrambling with a heavy pack isn't my favourite thing to do. You made it harder than it had to be by carrying that tripod in your hand, I always put my poles away in my pack before starting a scramble. Three points of contact on the rock isn't easy when you're carrying something in your hand. Good to see you out and about again.
Beyond stunning really jealous
Doing this in a few weeks once the Covid aftermath is gone. Great video to watch! Well done lad!
Loved it mate good vid .
I'm not sure if we're all quite ready for the slow mo a$$h*le cam lol! I've done a couple of those awful boulder/rock climbs this season and I felt the same way, though the bleeping was all in my inner voice as I kept telling my friend that I was doing "okay." That summit looked worth the climb, but I don't envy your climb back down with screaming knees. Hope it all went ok. It was interesting to see all three shelters. I like the Taiji 2 and the Durston. The Durston XMid Pro 1 and 2 are DCF versions, but seem impossible to come by. I do like the solid inner for the Durston. Still, my heart is set on the Scarp 1 for winter camping here in the mountains. Great video as always.
I was as happy as you were to reach the top .Thank you for taking us to palaces where some of us are not able to go ⛑👞
Just watched this in my £40 Aldi tent. That looked mint, reminded me of our Jura trip a few years ago with that terrain. Bit sketchy at the start there. 😬
I did my video on this eight years ago going down those rocks absolutely terrifying lol absolutely brilliant you managed it especially carrying that tent lol I had the cricket
:D love them action vids
Is that the 3F UL tajiji tent please? I’d so how do you rate it? Be keen to hear as I’m looking for a 2 man under 2kg or very close to Thankyou 🙏🏻
Not wild camping but I'm heading off to Snowdonia in the campervan with the family for 5 days next week and I'm really looking forward to it now! We are staying in a campsite attached to a local pub and micro brewery so that's the evenings sorted! Day time is lots of hikes and a trip to the top of Snowdon, weather permitting.
Easily your toughest one yet. At least you shared this, warts and all Paul
That type of shortcut is exactly the type I’d love to scale!!
camped up there many moons ago, beautiful wonderfully wild and free from people bar the roman steps.
thought i had my laptop the upside down lol But think i would have out that tripod/camera down - well done
Back on the M & M's top man
To be honest, I love the content, but I'm always a bit put out that outdoor youtubers take to the mountains so easily, whereas I'm always a nervous wreck when I get caught out on tough scrambles. As much as it wasn't too enjoyable for you, it was nice to see that I'm not alone. My nerves in the mountains is definitely something I need to work on, not sure how though.
I was well out of my comfort zone at one point. A stop and a few moments to calm down was needed. It’s very rarely like that so it’s worth doing your homework before taking on a route. We missed the path as this area is not so popular. At time the paths were overgrown bushes. It gets easier the more you push yourself. I am getting better with the heights
To be nervous is a good thing, it keeps You alive
When You loose it , is when You get hurt, or even killed .
To loose this is when You need to be concerned.
Mike
Extra planning, and use your GPS app on ur phone (in airplane mode) to find ur way back to the trail. I use the AllTrails Pro app, and planned a backcountry hike where there was no trail, looking at topo maps & then satellite maps to manage the terrain, but it's still difficult. In the end, my plan was for naught, as my nephew broke his arm & we resorted to plan B, car 🏕️ camping at my late Aunt & Uncle's fishing camp, which turned out great 👍
(Except for the bugs, mosquitos were bad, very very bad. I had planned for bad, with bug repellent, bug shirts & a screened cooking & eating tarp that was the MVP of the trip, but yeah, my wife said, never again, again. LoLz 😝
Holy moly Paul… I suspect you will have had a bit of a talking to from Jo 🤔 about being ’a bit too adventurous’ on this one 🙂!
Ah the rhinogs are my favourite mountain range I've ever explored, they were exhausting to explore, but entirely gorgeous and remote.
My xmid solid 2p is sitting in customs. Waiting for the official notification so I can pay my dues.
Trip planned for next week to test it out. A wee walk over the tops of the. Wicklow mountains. I don't pitch on the peaks. I prefer to drop down to shelter. This time I will pitch at the highest and most remote mountain lough in Wicklow. Then it will be over to a pub to be picked up by the wife.
Looking forward to trying the xmid. Got extra guylines ready and pegs to swap out for the factory ones. I think this could end up as my go to tent.
If you can get your hands on one, Paul, grab it.
I don't know if it's just the Gopro lens but that looks pretty steep, like it's a sheer drop Paul. You're a braver man than I.
The Rhinogydd are brutal! It's literally a Mountain obstacle course 😂 Beautifully rugged!
You had to make your own path for a lot of the route but when you get to the top…wow
@@PaulMessner you looked like you climbed it in a pair of footy boots
Must have just missed you .. was there last week.. Weather turned bad the
weekend didn’t it!
Nice video mate
Ahh, the old 'short cut' that turns out to be much harder than expected.. I have been there lol
The GOAT
Hi Paul, I love your videos and adventures and have enjoyed watching loads of content. I’m new to camping out of a back pack and have just bought this tent, what size and make of stuff sack do you use please? I’d like to use a smaller bag for the tent. Thanks in advance, Chris
Great video Paul wot is the make of shoes and trousers you use please
I am never one for leaving a negative comment, I always appreciate the time and effort all the youtubers put into their channels, if I don't like it I don't comment but I will always give a thumbs up because of the effort......but when it comes to safety and I have said this to other youtubers please put your Garmin on your person not rucksack, in the event of a accident you may ditch your rucksack. You have alot of subscribers I bet you would be devastated if someone followed how you wear the garmin and needed it but could not get to it because they had to ditch the rucksack.
hi paul great video i am after some new footwear and trousers which ones do you use please...keep up the excellent work
Montane terra pants and La sportiva trail runners
Lol crazy route . There is a similar route at the back of moel siabod .
Really want to try this what are the rules around camping wild in Snowdonia?
Dude that's alot of heavy breathing lol and not steak at the end well done that was exhausting just to watch.
I have a question i walk a bit camp a little and understand layers a bit but cant figure out if there truly gear out there thats windproof and has good waterproofing anything i try leaves me so warm n sweaty that leaves anything im wearing underneath soaked irrespective of vents etc do you have any suggestions
Paul, I will chip in for the slow-mo camera if You Tube will let you show us your nervous moments ????
Done snowdonia this weekend. Right wet weekend in wales 🤣🤣
Short vid but to be fair watched it to see you and Andy following the lone explorer he sets a hard hard pace I'm guessing
What’s your take on the tent 3FUL Taiji2. I got one. I feel that it tend to collect condensation a lot compared to Cloud Up 2.
