Shaded Pole Induction Motor - How To Reverse

- Cooling Fan Video: • Shaded Pole Induction ...
Shaded pole motors come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are convenient for powering displays, models and marble machines. Sometimes these motors are running in the opposite direction we would prefer. This video shows how most of them can be reversed.
good video, no overtalk, no BS, no silly music. short, clear and to the point. thumbs up.
I bought a motor for my kitchen range hood and it was for a newer model. Flipped a bracket, reversed it with this video, saved me a return headache. Thank you.
Glad it helped.

Very helpful video, saved me from having to hunt down another motor and got machine back up and running. Thank you!
I ll try on my new motor. Thank you for sharing.
Very helpful. Thank you kindly
I ordered a direct replacement pellet stove combustion blower and the fan was turning the wrong way! Thanks for this video!
the windings that you said get very hot, are what determines the direction of rotation. when you flip the field, you also reverse those windings in relation to the armature.
Thank you! This helped me out big time!

Great vid! What was this motor pulled from? Do you have a capacitor in the power line? Thanks!
Excellent Ron. love to see things stripped apart :-)
There is another way to reverse a shielded pole motor.
Just rotate the rotor in the desired direction at a speed close to the synchronous speed and immediately switch the motor to mains voltage. Work perfect
If so... then you would need to do that every time you wanted to start it in the reversed direction?
I have done that before, when I was 12 y/o, using a SP motor from an old turntable. I often wondered do they make pulleys for these motors?
New to 3d printing this will help out just subscribe to your work
Excellent info - I take it then that flipping the rotor end-to-end would have the same effect on a motor with a double-flatted shaft (both ends identical)?
underserf I assume it would as long as we are talking about the same type motor. Just try it. You can always put it back as original.
Yep, ain't like brain surgery :)
Why do some motors have a main coil with three wires, what is the third wire for?
I don't recall seeing one. Some motors need a starting coil but most of these shaded pole motors do not. Ground wire?
Hi there..first of all tks for the videos....I have a question..If I change polarity on a single phase motor..would it run just the same and in the same direction? Tks for now
For a shaded pole motor like this there is no polarity because it runs on AC... there is just a magnetic field which reverses itself 60 times per second for 60Hz power. To change rotational direction you need to turn over the field. Other type motors are made in a variety of ways and some have multiple wires for changing direction of rotation and motor speed. You need to consult the wiring diagram or google the make and model number for your motor yo determine if you can reverse the rotation.
Why is it that if you rotate these motors in the opposite direction then turn them on they will run backwards.? This works with most single phase induction motors, Like belt sanders grinders ect. Some newer models may have some circuitry to stop this but old motors will do this.
Sorry, I have not experienced this and once the motor is connected to something it would probably be difficult to spin it in the opposite direction anyway.
Will it run on 12 V DC?
This is a 115V 60 HZ AC motor... so no.
It is the alternating current which caused these to run (turn).
A quand la traduction française on regarde youtube et on comprend rien on est en France un peu de respect pour le peut de bon français qui reste merci de comprendre youtube ç'est désespèrent
Good
Can AC fan be used as a normal fan for general use?
+The Capsule Not sure I understand your question. Electricity found in most homes is 50 or 60 Hz AC. So yes, a normal household fan would be AC.
+Ronald Walters I already using it as a fan but don't know how to change direction of fan air because it's fragile being made in China.
+The Capsule Sorry I can not help you. Not all AC motors are made to be reversible. A fan is usually on/off and possibly a few different speeds but not reversible.
3:11 Why there is a 'tape' around that coil ???
To protect the fine wire used in the coil. The wire only has a shellac or lacquer insulation and the tape or paper helps to protect it.
Therefore, can we say that this tape protects the wire only against mechanical damage (ex: small scratches) and not against heat or moisture?
Correct... against mechanical damage. This type motor is for indoor service only.
End of the video gave the eBay seller "bestboxman". No Capacitor required.
it can be a generator?
+Fernando Jimenez I don't think so. Not an efficient one in any case.
