  • as per title: fairly long vid so you may want to skip if your time is limited. motor is from an exhaust fan. exhaust fan's are responsible for quite a big number of house fires! service your fans to avoid problems! here's how to do it.
    i recommend buying a good quality exhaust fan that's worth servicing; and not an absolute piece of shit: you get what you pay for

    lol, glad you like my vids. that oil is "singer" light machine oil. i prefer kinoton projector oil but didn't have any. they are a very reliable motor if good quality and well looked after

    Good info but I've always been told that drilling a bronze bushings will close off the capillaries. But I could be wrong

    Thanks. This answers the question what is there break or fix on a shaded pole motor.

    I happen to have a lucky shot a year ago: I pulled a shaded pole motor from a humidifier with seized bronze bush bearings. As I took the motor apart to see what I could do to bring it back to life, an idea came to me. I remembered that I had two wrapped ball bearings laying around that I wrongly bought a few months earlier. So I compared the size of the bearing holders and rotor axle: Bingo! A perfect match! All what was left to do was to rip the bronze bush out, place the ball bearings in, add a few washers and voilà! A rock-solid motor back to life with a major upgrade. Woohoo!

      How long did the bearings last?

    • @Bandicoot803
      @Bandicoot803 3 роки тому

      @@PowerScissor The original ones didn't last a month. Found some solid material which seized the rotor shaft. Thankfully the shaft survived without a scratch. It was easy to clean off before assembling the new bearings.

    Yes, the bushings used are called "Sintered Bronze" used with the felt pad to retain oil as you pointed out. They use powered bronze alloys and place it into a known amount into a mold, hydraulic press and some heat is applied. This creates the tiny holes you see that allow oil by capillary action to draw in for lubrication once time. Crazy they call they lifetime lubricated. Who's life time? Ours or the bearing? The second is correct. Good video. Although, "Bush" in other countries mean sometime else. ;)

    Thanks for the info!
    I realize that this video is older but I just pulled the shaded pole motor out of a Lasco ceramic space heater because of a noisy bushing. This motor looks similar to your fan motor except the bushing holders have 2 small holes on the opposite side which appear to be for inserting a straight punch into to drive the bushing retainers/washers out. The reason I'm wondering is because I think I might need to replace a bushing. I can tell that it got hot by looking at the armature shaft that spins in the bushing, it's dark gray in an area about half way around it. And when I insert the shaft into the self centering bushing and try to rock it back and forth, there's a slight catch in one area. The bushing itself doesn't seem to loose, I don't feel any play but that catch in there has me concerned. It may have overheated the felt or whatever material that is in there to soak up the oil....Do you have any experience changing the bushings?

    Like Alan Brown said. Clay Paky, an Italian Robotic light manufacture used to have a electric motor oil that was light oil with graphite mixed in I WISH i still had some! IT was FANTASTIC for repair on motor bushings. Door window motors, these C frame motors.

    Unfortunately some manufacturers cheaped out and decided to not include any felt to keep the bushings oiled.
    So I have to lube mine 3 times per day to keep them quiet and running smoothly.

    • @wickedxe
      @wickedxe  3 роки тому

      I have come to the conclusion that light machine oil is too thin and I am instead going to try auto transmission fluid as it's heavier and contains detergent

    Is there a life span for a freezer evaporator fan motor in my 14 years ol fridge...fan is absolutely smooth...run down time is good, just suspect motor windings may have gotten weak, so rpm may be lower, so cooling air flow movement sluggish,from freezer to fridge. Temperatures are good of freezer n fridge. -7°Cand-1°C. Any suggestions..??

    I’m about pull the evap fan out of spare fridge. It’s making noise. $92 for a new one. But, are you sure you can reverse the motor rotation by reversing the rotor? I’m pretty sure the rotor will turn the same direction relative to the stator.

    Why some coils in the shaded pole induction motor have a kind of 'protection' tape while others are 'exposed' ???

  • @chriskaprys
    @chriskaprys 9 місяців тому

    If, after doing all that, the motor still occasionally hesitates and groans before finally starting to spin (and the whole assembly and box it's mounted into has been thoroughly cleaned out and wiped down), is that likely to be an electrical fault with the motor itself? As in the asynchronous relationship between the inductor and the squirrel cage rotor? In other words, can a shaded pole motor like this simply burn out?

    • @wickedxe
      @wickedxe  9 місяців тому

      They can burn out, if it rotates freely by hand and there isn't excessive free play in the bearings then they can fail electrically

    • @chriskaprys
      @chriskaprys 9 місяців тому

      @@wickedxe that's interesting, thanks. What part of the motor is faulty after a burn out? I just find it strange since it's electromagnetic waves translated into mechanical movement, so I wouldn't have guessed that something blocking the mechanical movement would feed back into the windings or rotor in any detrimental way.

  • @wickedxe
    @wickedxe  11 років тому

    very true, that would work(they should come with a thermal fuse standard by law). but when the shaded pole motor isn't serviced they get noisy and slow; and that is very annoying when it's a fan and your trying to talk over it lol

    I had forgot about the pourus nature of bronse bearings, that oil looked very thin and clear, special purpose?
    I thought "record player motor" lol, hope it ran nice a quiet after your revamp :-)
    Also i remember them from old top loader washing machines, the water pump.
    Those motors last a long long time, usually the bearings wear out.

    Kind of boring to destroy a shade pole motor, unless you have a variable frequency drive where you can play with the line frequency to speed them up or slow them down. I've had to service all too many of those things, in bathroom exhaust fans, phonographs, electric heaters, and other miscellaneous appliances. Sometimes the phonograph motors are so bad you have to soak the bushes with varsol or WD just to get them apart.
