I've been using this knot since 1977. But I do 5 loops just for insurance. I've never had this knot fail. I don't know how many Palomar knots I've had break or pull out on me. Likewise, I was using the triline knot for a while until I figured out the triline knot and the Centauri knot are pretty much the same thing, Just different steps to accomplish the same outcome.
I have to be honest here: I watch a lot of knot vids. I think this is hands down the best Centauri knot video that I've come across so far Your steps are exactly what I follow with a few tweaks to make the cinching simple with 150# fluro. I use pliers on the tag end for the final cinching down, and use a Thirty Fathoms Knot Puller (tweaked by adding a snap & split ring to cover fresh water sizes). The knot has never failed me. While learning it, I had to make it a point where I pinch the knot. That was part of the learning curve. Before starting to cinch it really mattered that the tag end is on top of the loops & the main line is on the bottom so they run sorta parallel to each other...observing it helped me get them almost flawlessly completed...Uber strong knots! Excellent video! ...Uber strong knots!
Is this knot good for tuna of all sizes? I normally use the Palomar knot and with the jigs i have for tuna. A good amount of mono leader line is connected with an FG knot
This is the knot we used when rock climbing. The main knot was a figure 8 then the tag of the figure 8 got tied into the knot you demonstrated. I'll give this a try. I just learned the tuna knot last night but it takes a lot of force to set well. I might use the figure 8 for jigs which need a lot of action.
I use this knot for all my fishing. If you pull the line through a fly wich has an upward or downward bendt hookeye, make a loop and tie the knot, you can pull the knot to the fly and pull the loop over the fly. Pull tight. It is way better than thurle and double thurle.
@@JustTheLip Saltstrong has a good video about it. I used it on 80Lb mono and caught 70Lb big eye tuna on it. Super easy and strong knot for thick line!
Should add a few wraps above these loops on the main line then go through the loops and pull. Shouldn’t be able to come lose. Kinda a improve the Trilene knot.
Using lighter line, it's much, much easier to wrap the line around your finger then pull the loops off to make that final pass through. Trying to form those loops with 10 lb line is a nightmare. The finger wraps work much better. Just sayin'
I agree. Been using this knot for years in a range of line strengths, and wrapping around your finger works really well. Just don't wrap too tightly or you can't pull your finger out ! You can use 4 loops (rather than 3) and/or you can run the line through the hook eye twice for a bit of extra safety.
This is not a knot for maximum strength with light line. It's for tying a heavy leader. For example, you might want to use a 50 lb leader and only 10 lb main line for pike fishing. Even if you lose 1/2 of your line breaking strength with this knot, it's still way stronger than your main line. It's just an easy small profile knot to use with heavy line.
I have heard that some people do prefer it, thank you for letting me know! I'm going to put out a video on that knot here sooner or later... thanks for watching/commenting!
You do realise that all knots slip yea... the point of designing a knot is to resist slipping as best as possible. Ultimately, slipping and strangulation is what causes a knot to fail. Friction under pressure causes heat. No slip, no heat.
@andrew5207 prove it. Let's see your knot up close with a camera while it's under snapping tension. You really have no idea whats going on with knots do you? And you really think you're getting anywhere near close to 85% with 60lb and over? Please lol. Seriously, head over to Toits channel for some real content.
That finish is not quite correct. The very 1st loop should be pulled through the other 2 lops to the front and then a figure 8 forms which is tightened up...
If it works for you, that's great! There are situations where the square knot may not have the necessary strength, and some people prefer to use more fishing-oriented knots. I wouldn't say other knots are unnecessary, they're just used in different situations! Thank you for watching!
Coincidentally I watched a video on tying a figure of eight for heavy line and stranded wire. He tied it exactly like this knot except he only used two wraps (loops) and before cinching he twisted the loops to form the figure of eight. Therefore this could be considered an improved figure of eight knot. Also, not to be contrary but if you only use the figure eight it seems to me you're doing very specific fishing and basic fishing, which is fine but there are other types of tackle with specialty knots and if you're limited to a square knot you will absolutely limit your chances. This is a fact, not merely an opinion.
As the person who took the picture and tied it, I assure you it is the same knot! I did take the picture in different lighting so it would come out a little clearer, but it’s definitely the same knot! Thanks for watching!
Now this will make rigging for striped bass a lot easier thanks for the video
Absolutely, glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!

Thank tou. You saved my life
I don’t fish, but this is very helpful for my macrame! Thanks!
That’s awesome! I don’t know anything about macrame but I’m glad it works for that too!
Great, comprehensible presentation, thank you.
I’m glad you enjoyed it-thank you for watching!

Can this knot be used with light mono filament for freshwater fishing?
Il lefty so I made it way more complicated lol. I got it thanks I've been going nuts trying to tie up some leader's with heavy mono
Haha that’s fair, I’m glad you got it though! I hope it works great for you, thanks for the comment!
Does that work with braid as well tying directly to the lure? Will it slip?
Is this knot good for tuna of all sizes? I normally use the Palomar knot and with the jigs i have for tuna. A good amount of mono leader line is connected with an FG knot
Thank you, great knot😊
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Polomar knot is the way to go. So simple so strong.
This knot is stronger with bigger line.
I use this knot on snap and it holds well..i do 4 to 5 loops for assurance
You should always pull the tag to tighten, then a double loop knot to finish
Great knot. Interested to know if this is stronger than a Palomar knot. Palomar hasn’t failed me yet with 60lb fluorocarbon. 😊
Well tied and well explained. It resembles a nail knot/tube knot without the nail/tube. I'll certainly use it. Thanks.
Thanks for the video I really like the live bait 😂🤙
Haha I’m glad you liked it! You’re the first comment about that little guy!
Can you tie this knot going thru the eye twice and then completing the knot as described?
I have not tried that for this specific knot, so I’m not totally sure honestly. But it is plenty strong as is 💪
Great video man!
Thank you, I’m glad you liked it!
Good clear stuff... thanks so much.

I haven’t tried tying it that way-thank you for the recommendation!
Very nice thanks 👍👍👍
You’re welcome, thank you for watching!
Why is it that when i pull on the tag end, the loop to the hook opens back up?
i use the double improved clinch knot, all i need for anything at all really.
That's definitely a good knot as well!
I watched another guy tie this and wasn’t that good, this guy did way better good job
Have a look at Billy Fishing, figure 8 knot
Do the supercow tuna knot
Clinch knot is really strong and easy, I wouldn't trust other people's not even though they say it's strong
Clinch and improve clinch are also great knots!
Wow
I go with the Orvis knot in this case ;)
I'll check that out! Thanks for watching!

That might add some security, but I will say I’ve never had this come undone on me as it is!
I catch big halibut using this knot
Awesome!! Glad to hear it!
Aren't u supposed to pull the loops back out before u tighten

That's actualy a Nail knot !
I have heard that a few times in this comment section-awesome! I did not know that before, thank you for sharing!! 🤙🙏 and thanks for watching
I prefer the San Diego jam knot for heavy line
I have heard that some people do prefer it, thank you for letting me know! I'm going to put out a video on that knot here sooner or later... thanks for watching/commenting!
*Any knot that comes undone by a large fish pulling on it is not a good knot to use for fishing*

@@vizionsys my line will snap long before my knot breaks from "slipping".

George Harvey Knot
Just putting it out there 100lb it not heavy line 150 and up is 100lb line can be tied with most normal knots
So on that first knot you don’t want to catch a big fish.
What do you mean?
I agree, always cautious not to trim it too closely! Thanks for watching!
Leave 3 inches of tag end and put an overhand knot because you may not tie this complicated three loop knot correctly.😭
I promise, after you tie it once or twice, it isn't nearly as complicated as it seems!
Definitely not for big hands or old eyes like myself
I understand that, it especially gets tricky with heavy lines. Which knot do you prefer?
All I tie is two square knots and that’s it. Never fails. All these other knots are unnecessary.

Sure bro. Sounds rad.
Then why are you watching this video 😭
This knot is pain in the ass to tie. A basic clinch is a lot better

This knot is impossible. I spent 5 hours! Trying this knot and not once did i get it right
Wtf is a dime? Sorry, I’m asian
Haha it’s a $0.10 coin in USD. It’s 1.7 cm in diameter, for reference.

Doesnt work
False. I just tried it and it’s the strongest knot I have tied with my 150 pound mono.
