I grew up in a racist town that only cared about sports. As a brown kid who sucked at sports but anime ran down the halls of school, people don't believe me when I tell them the number one thing I was bullied for in school was my religion. Funny because for years our Prophets taught that the “Catholic Church was the whore of the Earth”. Hard to believe people don’t like us when we were taught things like this. Yes, things have changed in the last 10 years. But people tend to take offense when we claim that they are in the wrong religion and don’t have the fullness of the gospel. You know us being the only TRUE church on the face of the earth.
On my mission, I had the same experience. The born again Christians hated us and told us we are going to hell for leading others away from the gospel, and Catholics were way more chill and usually just loved talking about Jesus regardless of our differences
Our stake was organizing a community cleanup day and tried to invite other faiths to join us in cleaning up the town. The evangelicals held a council and then declined. Methodists and Catholics joined in.
Our stake was organizing a community emergency preparedness fair, and we invited several other churches to join us. Originally our plan was to have the event at a local park, and they were all on board to join in, but permitting costs and other related expenses necessitated that we moved it from the park to the stake center parking lot. As soon as we notified them that it was necessary to change the venue, they all dropped out completely. We never mentioned religion at all, just that the stake center didn’t require the costs and permits that the park did require. It was sad they dropped out, because it was a big success and ended up in the community newspaper.
Typical. They continue to demonstrate how un-Christian they are.

In a word, Priestcraft. The reason the Evangelical Community hates the Latter-day Saints so much is because they are taught to by their leaders. And the reason their leaders hate us is because we threaten their livelihoods. The Catholic Church, for example, is a bit different. It has old money. There are bigger cultural differences between us and, say Muslims, that prevent them from being converted and leaving in droves. But Evangelicals in the US are very similar to us culturally. They could easily cross the line and become members of our faith if they weren’t actively taught to hate us. And its not hard to see why. The Non-denominational church down the street goes out of business is they lose their members to us.
💯💯💯 agree! This is also why the church appeals to so many Evangelical/nondenominational churches - our leaders and clergy are not paid, they serve out of their live for Jesus and one another and it shocks them

Familiarity breeds contempt. It's exactly the same with breakoff groups like Seventh-Day Adventists or Jehovah's Witnesses. The former basically live Latter-day Saint standards, but they think we're the devil 🤣
The truth is when Evangelicals lose members to the Mormon Church, which happens all the time, it is money out of the pastor's pocket. It's all about the Benjamins!

There was an Evangelical Christian streamer on Twitch I was watching and she was dumping on 'mormons'. So I said hey I'm actually a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and i'm happy to answer any questions people have. She told everyone to be careful because 'mormons try to trick you with kindness'. :p

It's my number one strategy.
Mormons are lovebombing in early stages, but hateful if you leave and neutral once you've been in for a while--so that's not even a false statement. Sure, you can make real friendships in Mormonism that equal normal real life friendships, but if you never connect beyond the superficial level most Mormons who join due to lovebombing reach, then yeah it all does feel disingenuine.
I have to say that as a Mormon, I love everybody of every religion. I have friends of every faith and nationality. Pretty sad that everyone hates us across the board.

Don’t worry, Jesus told us we would be hated and persecuted as they first hated and persecuted him. His prophecies being fulfilled. Sad as it is, I rather be on the side of Jesus being hated and persecuted than being on Satan’s side doing all the hate and persecution. Stay Blessed!!!🙏🏽❤️

I am a Former Evangelical Pastor, who studied the Bible, preached Salvation by grace through Jesus Christ, and i got paid a salary for serving in the Church. Most of all, as a Pastor, we were trained and taught that we should hate the Mormons. If not for a neighbor who is a Latter-day Saints, though inactive and seldom go to Church, the Lord has mysterious ways in converting me to His Restored gospel of Jesus Christ and in the Book of Mormon. Im am very knowledgeable and well equipped with the Bible, but the Lord made me fool when i saw the fruit of the Spirit in a inactive Latter-day Saints. Im not suggesting members of the LDS should go inactive to convert a Pastor, but if a Apologetic member debates on me, i will not be humble enough to know the truth from the Holy Ghost. It is the Spirit the converts, not the human flesh.

I got set up on a blind date with an evangelical. Everything was fine and then when he found out my religion, within a few mins he called for the check and just bailed. HAHAH!! He was ugly so it was fine.

I remember one time our ward in Tennessee tried to do a joint service project with a local Christian churc. It got canceled because once the members found out it was with the Mormons, they backed out. To be fair to the pastor, he was on board. It was many in his congregation that weren't.
These things happen all the time, my friend. Even during disaster relief, the other churches don't want us helping.

I contacted a few churches in my current town earlier this year to see about starting a project in our small town. We were talking and then when they asked and I said what church I belong to they hung up within a minute or two.

I've Bible bashed in the past as a result of wanting to correct blatant lies about the LDS faith but I've recently started striving to just show love in every interaction. I'm plenty confident in my testimony of the truth and there's no need to rage just because the people grossly misunderstand us and our doctrine. Simply loving just makes me feel so much better and I hope helps bring others to Christ much more than being confrontational haha. ✌🏻❤
I also have a hard time not trying to correct the lies. Showing someone they are wrong doesn't seem to work for some reason.
It's tricky because I personally don't want to just stay silent when incorrect things are being said. I think it's ok to make a simple corrective statement but then after that I try to drop it and walk away before it turns into bible bashing.
President Holland says we are to defend our Faith. Of course in Love. Silence is consent and we’ve been too silent and now we see the results of hatred overtaking the world because we did not speak the truth which would shame them devils.
Once flying to Oklahoma for a work trip, I sat next to this lady who is a wife to an evangelical pastor. We talked about Christ and towards the end of our flight, she said “it’s so nice to sit next and speak with a true Christian.” She then asked what church I attend. I said our church name. Her response, “oh Mormons are not Christians.” I said, “you just exclaimed that I’m a true Christian and I am a member of the Mormon church.” She said, “well you are the only true Christian in that church. lol
Technically that’s not a no true Scotsman fallacy, so kudos to them.
I have been told by two different friends that I am not Christian, but that I act like a Christian. One even said I seemed more Christian than most of her other Christian friends!

I told someone at work that I was going to a family reunion in Utah, and he said, "Oh...you're Mormon. That's okay as long as you're a good person." Most people are kind and tolerant, though.
For years I wanted a blue T-shirt with the words 'MORMON' printed scross it in big white letters. Now that we cant call ourselves 'Mormon' anymore I just wear BYU Tshirts, its pretty much the same thing.

You are 100% right. I am pleased to be a "unique" disciple of Christ. It doesn't matter a whit to me whether I am liked by people as long as God loves me.

It would be interesting to see this same study from 20 years ago, 40 years ago, 60 etc. I would like to see if all of our work to try and build bridges has had any positive affect.
I think we do an effective job at the official level, but have generally been unsuccessful at the grass roots level. While I do take the internet to be cross-sections of the most extreme positive and negative ends of the propaganda spectrum, the amount of antimormon content is oppressively huge. If you post a publicly visible Conference talk on Facebook or X, the Evangelical troll mafia comes out to play in force, followed by the atheists and antagonistic exmormons.
The online space isn't the only space that has problems, interfaith conferences still have issues with having the "Mormons" there, with Evangelical organizations usually being the objectors. The Fairview Temple as well as other Temples building projects that rouse objections are another example of our lack of success in having a sufficiently friendly public face.
As I've been learning about the history of anti-mormonism, I don't think we've made much progress at all, except at the highest levels of relations. We are still misrepresented horribly, easy targets and considered to be type of religious pariah by almost everyone. When I dated a non-member a number of years ago, all of her friends were horrified that she was dating a Mormon, and made her promise not to become one, as if that was so horrible. That's an anecdote, but I'm relatively sure, there is nothing we can do on the grass-roots level. it appears to be the destiny of the Church to be hated, derided and under-rated.
Moved into a new neighborhood years ago. Met our first neighbor and she asked if we went to church. We said we do. Then she asked which one do you attend? We responded that we attend and belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and that you might also know us at Mormons. Her face just went pale and she said “oh”. Suffice to say she avoided us until they eventually moved years later. Nevertheless, I feel this is on the leaders and pastors of these people and that this is where the unfortunate narrative about the LDS church is coming from. Who has the most to lose if Joseph was really the Prophet of the Restoration? Yep, priestcraft is obviously alive and well it appears. Perhaps this is what is meant that their hearts are far from the Lord. So sad that it causes many professed Christians to perceive their fellow brothers and sisters on very unloving ways.
And it's not Christlike even though they constantly talk about Christ.

I'm used to it. I have red hair and wear glasses, plus I was taller than everyone else I went to school with, so being Mormon was the icing on my cake. I also lived in Hawaii and I went to school everyday with a big target on my back. I got used to busted lips and broken glasses. Rockem, Sockem robots was my daily lot, and I loved it. 🙂

In my experience it’s Evangelicals and Calvinists. Evangelicals because they’re taught to be hostile, and Calvinists because they can’t admit to be wrong sometimes.

Persecution complex
Although every group (except Catholics) have an overall negative about us, the most hated are the evangelicals (top column). The evangelicals have nearly four groups with -40% or more; we have only one.
It's interesting that the more religiously conservative groups (Catholic, evangelical, LDS, Muslim) had the most, and most extreme, negatives.

The main conclusion I have come to about all of this is to not be embarrassed about being a member. Its just as bad to be embarrassed as it is to brag about it. Weve got the truth, and it makes them angry, but thats their problem. If they have a problem with what you believe then you dont want to have anything to do with them anyway. Same with me, from my mission in Florida.
My parents are former member of our church and are now born again evangelical Christians. They tried to convert my wife and I multiple times. During one of these “discussions” I asked my mother if because I am a Mormon does that mean I am going to hell. Her response was “Well I am not the one to judge that.” Another time she asked me if I have accepted Christ as my personal Savior. Without hesitation I answered yes. Her reply to that was, “but how?” I don’t remember what I said, but it was something like does it matter? She didn’t like that answer.
We have a good relationship as long as religion doesn’t come up.
My. LDS friend's sister left church, married an evangelical and is sending her all kinds of evangelical preachy stuff and talking to her like she knows nothing about Christ. My friend is being nice and keeping things peaceful.
So interesting.... it's not often the parents that leave with the kids staying... what's that like? What's that story?
We have a neighbor when we moved in moved who we get alomg woth so well. They are evangelical and we love them. They are awesome ..and everything is well until we started inviting the to potlucks and dun activity. Like sports and Christmas activities. We invite every until they were fed up and told us that they weren't intrested in our church. So we are like that's cool we weren't trying to convert we are just sharing family time and thought they will be cool to hangout. Plus frer food and activity for kids. And then they texted back that they aren't looking for another chuch. And we are like hey we know these are just family-friendly activities i thought they would like. If they invited us to one of their activity we would love to go. They left it as that, and we invite everyone once in a while... but don't know what they are so scared of. We just want to hang out lol

I had the same experience with the “I don’t speak English” thing on my mission in Taiwan with Chinese. But the fun part is that they would then switch to Taiwanese, saying they didn’t speak Chinese. Then I would switch to my limited Taiwanese. Then they would run away.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I don't hate other religions, but I definitely would rather talk to members of any group over evangelicals. Most of the others you can have a good conversation with, but evangelicals start flaming their nostrils when talking religion.
Try going to a science school as a member of the church in junior high.

I'm more of a "I hate a certain type of Mormon. The egotistical, self-serving, believe they're more deserving than others because they're a Mormon, project inferiority on non-mormons and superiority on their self type'
I also dislike all, not just Mormons, people who believe they are pre-ordained or pre-chosen by deity. Tends to create a gross type of people.

A popular evangelical UA-cam pastor recently asked about the difference between evangelical pastors and LDS bishops. The best response is this: LDS bishops preach about Jesus, while evangelical pastors preach about Mormons
I have a couple of Catholic friends and I asked one of them if I was Christian to which they said no because we didn’t believe in the trinity. But my other Catholic friend considers me a Christian. Which I just found funny and also very interesting. But I am friends with both of them regardless of our different opinions.
The saddest thing is how much love Mormons have for Jews, and the love is not reciprocated at all (quite the opposite).

In my experience Muslim people treat us very kindly. If anything I’m disappointed that we didn’t show more love towards them in this study.

You know Carden, my brain itches when you tell us that you are so frustrated with the Church's Niceness Culture and then you brag about how the church is seen as nice by Pew's latest survey. A little hypocritical?
Let me share One reason it’s Important to use the correct term when it comes to the church and stop using the term “Mormon” :
If one call themselves a Mormon, and then leave the church they are called Xmormon or in other words anti Mormon
If they call themselves a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and then leave, then it stands to reason they would be called x…. Then take the name of the person whose church it is and insert…. So…. X ״christ״…. Or in other words ANTICHRIST.
those who have left it or are fight against it are masking the spirit of antichrist with that term….and people cannot see that it is running rampant thus fulfilling prophecy of antichrist in these last days.
Now this is a bold claim right… and I may offend some who love the term Mormon and still want to use it… as you guys are… well I just simply say… if this church is Christs then call it by his name. Period. Then it will be clear who is working against him with the spirit of antichrist. Plain and simple.
Mormon is a masking term for that spirit. And before you go telling me that we have used that term for 200 yrs well that was a nick name given by those who would hate and kill us. Instead of fighting we allowed it. Now as the end draws near… it’s time to use the correct name… boldly and unapologetically denounce the term given by the deceiver. We are members of the church of Jesus Christ… we are his Latter Day Saints. Those who profess to know his name but their hearts are still linked to Mormon are a tell tale sign of who you list to obey.

For example: Christ was disliked for entirely different reasons than David Koresh. By your logic, David Koresh is the True Church because he is most hated.
It has to do with why.
You can't just dismiss criticism as proof of your divinity without being honest about why you're being criticized.

How about we start putting together an evangelical interfaith activity. They love worship music and we like it to but as long as it’s not in sacrament. If it’s an activity on a Friday as interfaith we’d love it. Find a way to somehow connect because it’s not working out what we have been doing for the last 200 years. We got to get United in some way.
That’s what Utah Tech Institute does! It’s amazing!! We have an interfaith activity at least 1 or 2 times a month I think.

I had a friend at work do this to me. we were the best of friends and once he found out I was LDS he did a complete 180. it was bonkers.

If you read the Bible you would realize your religion is based on divinations, lying spirits, and so much more. I'm sorry you take neither the time to study your own religions history nor the Bible.
In other words, we are Naïve. The numbers of positive feelings we have towards groups that hate us and want us eliminated is a little alarming. Don't the scriptures say to be gentle as doves but wise as serpents? I would take this to mean that we should not be aggressors, but we should be aware of what others want to do to us. And I am NOT just talking about Muslims.
We Christians don't hate you, we feel pity for you.
