1. Enlarge, configure, and use your mininap using the '+' key on your numpad. Press and hold CRTL to change the minimap settings using the little cog icon above it. Getting into the habit of using your minimap will serve you well in higher tiers.
2. Always aim at the waterline of the enemy ship when using AP
