I have a friend that only packs clothes that she wants to get rid of, then she donates them at the end of her trip and fills her suitcase with treasures she’s purchased on her trip.

That's a really good idea! My backpack was taken off a train in Italy in the 90s and it taught me how to travel light. Now I always pack for 1 week no matter how long I'm away for b/c you can always do laundry. And if traveling overseas, I only take older clothes I don't mind losing and make sure anything I don't want to lose is in my day pack.

You don’t actually need heels, especially for just one occasion. You could bring ballet flats that you can also use every day as house slippers. Shoes need to be in plastic bags, not touching your clothing. It’s a doggie doo-doo world out there (and spit).
The best thing for European travel in winter is silk long underwear tops and bottoms. Extraordinary warmth for tiny weight and volume. Can also be pyjamas.

Three biggest travel trips. 1. Always pack a large scarf you can use it as a blanket, a sarong, a dress, a pillow, a scarf etc. 2. Always pack noise cancelling headphones for any flight over an hour. You don’t realise how fatiguing that airplane noise is until you eliminate it. Especially helpful if you want to sleep on your flight. 3. Always pack hydration like a face mist and a nasal spray to combat the dry air.

3 weeks traveling Europe in Oct with the womens 40L Eagle Creek backpack. With back issues needed it light. Got it to 14lbs. Had plenty to wear. 1/2 way through mailed a box of souvenirs and some unneeded clothes and items and made room to buy a few things on the 2nd half. Worked out perfect.

To each their own! I pack (overpack) differently. Being a flight attendant I rarely travel for pleasure and I do not need to worry about weight of my suitcase. And since we take our suitcases to the plane ourselves, we know, it will be there. If I ever travel on vacation I do many things as you do. Bare minimum on cosmetics. I buy what I need there. Many hotels provide shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap…even toothpaste if you ask. But what I never ever pack is a hairdryer. Literally every hotel, B&B …has a hairdryer. If not in the room, ask and they will deliver. Concerning laundry: if you can, good for you, but if the accommodation doesn’t provide washer and dryer… in general people bring too big carry-on luggage with them, because they don’t read what’s allowed. The carry-on must fit under the seat in front of you and must not weigh more than 8kg. So there we have the problem. Coach class also only allows one piece of carry-on. A large backpack counts as a second piece. So just be careful or you might one day be forced to check one of those. At least at my company (the biggest in Germany) Wearing your bulky items is indeed a no brained. But only if you stay in one climate zone. Otherwise you end up with coat and boots in hot climate and without any warm clothes on your way back from the carribian . Trust me. I’ve seen it all. People stealing blankets from the plane, because they didn’t “know” it was cold in Germany in winter…Flipflops….

My husband made me a rolling board. He covered a board with contact paper and screwed two large binder clips at the top. That way I can use both hands to roll and keep tension. It lives in my closet behind my shoe rack. I travel a lot with work. I usually shop in whatever country I’m in for the special outing. I buy merino wool base layers. I wear the men’s because I have monkey arms.😂 They come in different colors. I use bar shampoo and conditioner. I use a plastic soap case to carry them or a baggie if I’m going to be gone for more than a week to save space. I didn’t think I would like the bars, but they work great. Less liquids. I just wear waterproof and insulated hiking boots. I wear solid black, gray and navy clothes. I wear scarves with patterns for extra color. The scarves can be stuffed in the small spaces. Happy and Safe Travels!!

I'm pretty low maintenance, no make up, minimal skin care when I travel, don't use any styling on my hair (other than a comb maybe), have no issue re-wearing clothes several times. I haven't checked in a suitcase for years now. I learned over the years that quality can make a big difference. you've mentioned it with sweaters. good quality sweaters (wool, cashmere) take less space and are warmer. these types of things make packing easier.
I recently went for a hiking trip in France that ended in a few days in Paris. so I needed to pack my hiking poles (I upgraded them for lighter and more compact ones on the trip. quality makes the difference), hiking clothes etc and clothes/bag/shoes for Paris. that was quite a challenge.
I really enjoyed your video and I love your clothing style

I helped her to roll her clothes and she was relieved ☺ Thank you for another wonder video Connie ♥ xx

Prescription meds have to travel in their labeled pharmacy containers, if not, one could be in for trouble if they get confiscated in customs, even temporarily for a couple days to be recertified by a local pharmacy. There are also some, like certain pain medicines, that one can’t take into certain countries, and could be arrested for just having them in luggage. That would ruin anyone’s trip.

I’m also a big fan of packing cubes, but more specifically, compression packing cubes! We also try to book Airbnbs with washing machines, if possible. Finding units with dryers in Europe can be a little more challenging. But worse case, if you can’t get a washer dryer in your rental, you can usually find a laundromat nearby.

I think it is quite an accomplishment to go carryon only during the winter, due to the heavier, bulkier clothing needed, so good for you for pulling it off.
I really like that carryon. Too bad it is probably no longer available. I was surprised that you didn't use packing cubes or folders though. A compressible packing cubes or folders would make those sweaters more compact.
Merino wool or Smart wool tops are an essential, in my opinion. I bring at least one, as they regulate body temperature, don't get smelly, and feel cozy. I usually incorporate some sort of hiking into a trip and the merino top is always in my daypack or on my body for that. A wool blend pashmina shawl and a pair of wool socks is another essential. And a pair of heavier no show socks to use as slippers.
Inatead of two devices I would bring just one 2-in one such as a surface Pro or surface go. I big laptop seems unnecessarily heavy and bulky.

Each has 11 pockets which hold my passport, RFID billfold, glasses, phone, water bottle, flashlight, keys, snacks, etc. If find using the Vest most convenient by just taking it off at TSA, put it in a bin and then collecting it on the other side. I wear it on the plane. That way my important stuff is never left unattended. One point, if you buy a Vest go up a size to allow for filled pockets.

Hubby and I just returned from a Midwestern winter road trip. I used to be a heavy packer - but this trip I amazed myself and my hubby with how light I packed.
It was a sort of last minute vacation trip - only 8 days to prepare. I checked the weather and temp constantly. For me, I want to be as comfortable and warm as possible. One of my fave tricks is to wear casual clothes that can double as PJs.
I wore a bra, 2 pairs of Pants (leggings under sweatpants with pockets), 2 pairs of socks (silk under merino wool), 3 tops (silk tank top under men's merino t-shirt under long-sleeved cotton Henley top (sold by Lands End as a PJ top, but I've been using it as my mid-layer this winter [2021-22]). I wore a thick, cozy hoodie sweater with 2 pockets under my wool hooded car coat - with 4 pockets! On my feet I wore LLBean shearling/suede ugg-style boots. I wrapped my wool/silk pashmina shawl around my neck, wore a crocheted beanie I made, and leather gloves with cashmere lining.
I didn't want to get hot during the 3 hour drive - so I hung my hooded wool coat on back of my seat and only put it on when we got out of the minivan. My gloves were in the glovebox, my beanie in the backpack, and shawl over my legs as lap throw.
for this 4 day trip in my suitcase, I packed only: toiletries pouch, electric toothbrush + charger, velvet slippers, 3 panties, a longsleeve t-shirt, silk longjohns, polyester 3/4 sleeve tunic, silk shirtdress/robe, 'tecnhical' tank top. In my backpack I had my meds in a pill-minder, my essentials (wallet, phone, masks, etc) + 2 handheld electronic games, a lightweight rayon shawl, a book and my travel journal.
The space I saved in packing light clothes I used to take my art supplies.
Guess what? I used everything and did not need anything! On review of my trip, I decided that the sweatpants were not needed - I only wore them on travel days, not lounging in our room as I'd planned.
If I had planned to swim I would have packed my 2-pc tankini set, a satin kimono, and flip-flops.
Fyi, I've usually travelled during summer weather - so this trip was a challenge for me.
I actually dressed too warm! But my hubby was very impressed with how lightly I packed for this road trip.

Good tips, and you have a lovely voice.
I don’t do yoga, but I love the yoga paws!
I love to travel, and my rule is: if I won’t use an item 3 or more times on the trip, it stays home.
I agree with some one who said to take really nice ballet flats that can double as house shoes or slippers.
I have a patent leather pair that I take.
I put my vitamins and OTC meds, all labelled, into little teeny ziplocks that dollar stores sell in their craft sections, then put them all into a lightweight pouch.
    I love packing cubes too.
I just started to travel carryon only when the pandemic started, but I was so happy that I could do it easily!

I love light packing and do it often I also wear my heavy things and layers. Sometimes if it’s feasible I send a box ahead or buy some inexpensive items online and have them shipped directly there I even Have a suitcase of things where I travel most ( my daughters house) that way I only need what I wear there and a small carry on

I have a flat (low profile) 6 X 8 inch purse with a thin leather crossover cord/strap that when empty, fits nicely into a carry-on luggage or backpack pocket. Once to my destination, I have a purse to fit identification, phone, cash and lip gloss. Nobody want to lug a backpack to a ballet. ☺️

One bag is good, but I always make that bag a backpack over anything that occupies my hands. I keep a couple of rolling bags in storage just in case, but airlines are so different in how much they can store in their overhead bins, and hard cased bags are not worth the risk for me. Waiting for checked luggage also is the worst start to a vacation or ending one, so don't want to do that anymore, either. 😋

Suggestions -Ribbed knit sweaters in cashmere and silk mix, light warm and take up little room; ballet flats rather than heels as so much more versatile; fabric handbag- mine is homemade and waterproof that packs flat and can be used when you just want to go out with a small bag; waistcoat with lots of pockets ( think fisherman's waistcoat but smarter); ditch the hairdrier.

Since I became minimalist on clothing I spent time to choose the good quality clothes! And when I travel I think more about my presence in there and enjoying it then putting the extra effort like I use to, and it was stressing me out! Now is very simple and very enjoyable! The only think I’m still working on, is the minimal skin care… I haven’t found yet what my skin like best… is a forever journey😌

Light pack can be donebut in winter ended up having to buy xtra winter jacket boots etc and then having to leave them as was unable to pack stuff or wear it on buses trains etc in hot country! Had nowhere to send them to either. As asthmatic need to stay warmer in winter so that s how it worked out. Have a packable nano type puffa but only suited to above 10 degrees even with thermal layer.

One thing mystifies me: I see lots of Americans post videos like this, but in Europe, where I live, airlines very strictly enforce an 8-kg limit (17.6 lbs) on carryons. I’ve even had to remove 200 grams (7 ounces) to get under 8 kg. Also, American carryons seem to be MUCH bigger than what’s allowed in Europe. Did you have any trouble traveling within Europe or getting back home with this suitcase?

    • @ConnieRiet
      @ConnieRiet  2 роки тому +5

Hi! Thanks for sharing your European experience with us. Yes, weight traveling internationally is very strict. My carry on in this video is standard size. I have not had any weight or size issues traveling internationally with it. When I first traveled internationally, I was not aware of how strict airlines were on weight. I had overpacked my carry on and it was 2lbs over weight. I had to rearrange my suitcase at the counter. Since, that time I'm more aware of not over packing.
      Happy Travels!

    • @HD-ol1mc
      @HD-ol1mc Рік тому

Yes, you'd have trouble in Australia and New Zealand on some airlines too - on one airline they weigh the total you're taking on board (carry-on and handbag together, for example) and they can't be a total of more than 7kg! 🙂
