In 2013, a peculiar music video titled "Rappin' For Jesus" appeared on UA-cam. The video was supposedly an old church outreach project from the 90s or early 2000's. The pastor of the church and his wife are the stars of the video, and lay down some pretty...interesting lyrics. Lyrical content aside, one thing that has been rather intriguing about this video is the ambiguous nature of its true backstory. Was this a really an un-ironic creation made years ago by a church outreach...or was it an intentional shock video crafted to go viral?

This is one of the best well done fakes I’ve ever seen. Put through a vhs and clearly used a lot of vhs editing techniques. Even made a website and kept it up for 10 years. Fake or not it deserved the success.

This is the story about how the music video was made:
On January 15th, 2013, a college student, rapper, filmmaker, cartoonist, lactor, and writer made a UA-cam account under the name "Brian Spinney", and founded a fictional church website, then designing it to make the website look like it was from the early 2000s over the following days. Nine days later, he and his two friends invited three old people from a community park that was close by 10 minutes from his home, and introduced theirselves, with the three young men using fake names so they don't get mentioned in relation to the video. They all went into the filmmaker's 7-seat car, going to Denny's to eat brunch. They discussed about making a viral video and how to get away with it (two were black men).
They drove to the filmmaker's studio room, even though there were outsides scenes shot 5 miles away from the studio. Two of the guys told the old man and woman to say the N-word a couple of times, with one of them bringing a sheet of the written song titled "Rappin' for Jesus". The filmmaker brought a board with Christian designs, a folding chair, a suit, white shirt, tie, steam blower, two microphones, cheap headphones, and fake gun to use for the video. With all the three young men telling what they would do as scripted and how to record a rap song with a lazy beat downloaded from the internet, the progress was done and they dropped off the old people back home, the young men thanked them, and would never see them ever again.
The filmmaker spent some of his time editing the Canon footage with special effects, text, images and backgrounds that make the video look like it was shot on videotape from the late 90s or early 2000s with Adobe. It was finally uploaded to UA-cam on February 5th. After it was uploaded, the filmmaker destroyed all the footage, search history and evidence relating to "Rappin' for Jesus".
The filmmaker and his friends went on to experience their individual success. By 2023, they have become celebrities that make a large fanbase, with no one ever thinking they made a viral video in secret.

I remember when this started floating around lmao I was in my early 20’s (I was actually probably like 19 about To be 20) and a major stoner at the time. It made me laugh so hard simply because of how ridiculous it was. I’ve always seen it as a spoof, but the seeming authenticity of it is what made it gold. It kind of reminded me of the E=MC Vagina days of YT.

I used to go to the West Dubuque 1st Church of Christ when I lived in Iowa and I can say that yes there was a West Dubuque 2nd Church of Christ - we had a rivalry with them. I only met Pastor Jim once or twice at the annual meatloaf cook off, he seemed nice enough. After his church closed in 2004 I heard he bought a mobile home and lives on a friends vacant lot in Storm lake Iowa. I believe he still ministers to people - but I haven’t been back to Iowa in years.
