One of the first viral videos to bubble up on UA-cam was the “Angry German Kid”. You have seen it; It features a young German board smashing his keyboard while playing a game of unreal tournament. While most are familiar with the video, few actually know what happened to the kid who was in the video. It turns out that becoming a living meme wasn’t an entirely positive experience for him, and he disappeared from the internet for over a decade. Today I am going to explain the origin and spread of the Angry German Kid video, and also talk about what happened to the videos mastermind.

the whole setup looked fake tbh. the screen kept displaying the same color (games have flashy colors). and who in their right mind (no pun intended) games at such a neck hernia inducing angle? only if you want to hide what's at the screen because it is fake. But it is so sad what happened afterwards, no one deserves that shit.
So, if you unterstand german you'd kinda notice it's faked, but it's still actually believable

Secret fun fact: He said he consumed two energy drinks and waited for his parents to leave the house, so he can go 100% berserk for his Unreal Tournament video.
Little did he know
Another fact: He has since admitted that his rapper persona ended up making him into an actual real gangster, as was arrested for multiple cases of drug trafficking. He was sentenced to three years on probation. Not being sent to prison was the final push to get his life in order.
Fun fact: there was actually a BERSERK powerup in Unreal Tournament 2004, the very game he's playing in the video. It's an "adrenaline combo" activated at 100 adrenaline points with a combination of keys (like forward, forward, back, back or something). If I remember correctly what the Berserk Combo does is to double the normal firing rate of your weapons (no effect for the Minigun or the Link Gun's beam).

Just because you were in diapers when he was doing it doesn't mean "people didn't know what Internet content meant". The Internet didn't start when you got online. There were forums, funny video websites, there was instant messaging (ICQ, Windows Messenger, ...) and it was good. Even UA-cam had very cool community before Google bought it and screwed it up.

Yeah if it were not for the fake news documentary the context of satire may not have been stripped away. The media ignores satire though as in the case of count dankula and the pug.
There is a documentary on Netflix called The Great Hack which not only talks more about how to recognise fake news, it also talks about how social media persuades people to share certain posts which causes a chain reaction amongst people creating new social groups and even go as far as changing parts of society.
About the subtitles: I think he said "dark net" and not "darkness".

They knowingly took a short satirical video, stripped the satire and made the man look like an unstable child. This in turn lead to him becoming unstable and got him in trouble with the law and at school. They effectively ruined his life for almost a decade

Their brand "focus" is mostly known for their magazin and tends towards articles on the polarizing side (more recent example was their reporting of the events in cologne during the silvester night 2015-2016 that went quiet far with anti migrant images and rethoric). They have a predominantly male target audience aged between 30 and 59 (source: their information page for advertisers).
So the kids life was almost ruined by literally fake news.

Imagine that... After all these years I found out the truth and feeling really sad for him. The problem was that I never seen his previous videos to see that this is all a satire, cause you know, as you said, on the internet everything can become twisted and losing it's original form. Really glad he got his life together, but that was a one hell of a hellish experience.

@@jakob4482 That is true however in most countries you still can sue them for defamation as there seems to be bad intent in the documentary. They did lie despite knowing the truth. The problem however is that suing them is expensive, might not result in them getting really punished for it and has been such a long time ago that there might be no chance at all. In most modern countries newspapers have special rights that help them out and make suing them succesfully hard. On top of that he didn't seem to have the money in the first place

Back then in Germany there was a huge debate if FPS games should be illegal or not. A lot of actual experts went on TV talking complete bullshit about video games. For example one guy said that in World of Warcraft you play as modern soldiers and the main goal is killing and so on. Usually when you see experts talking on TV your like "this guy is an experts what he's telling should be true more or less". But in this case 14 year old kids were able to tell that these so called experts were talking nonsense and gamers came out because they didn't want to be labeled as psycho killers. In the end the department which is responsible for deciding at what age your allowed to view a horror film etc. recognized that FPS games don't make killers and the didn't pass the law making fps games illegal. It's crazy if they would have done that I could go to jail for playing counter strike. There are some documentaries about that topic but I think they are all in german.

So this kid was an amazing actor, and quite honestly too smart for the audience he found himself with. I could not imagine creating a social commentary on any given subject using satire to portray a caricature of whatever was being called out...AND be able to execute it so well that it goes right over everyones head.

I think peoples actually realised it was satire. But many peoples especially at that time had a bias towards video games. They wanted this to be true to confirm their bias. They wanted a demon that could show everyone in the world what happends when you play too much video games. So conveniently this video started to circulate around. Even to this day peoples draw far fetched analysis between video games and school shootings. Peoples will make things out to be true even if deep inside they know its not only to further their own agenda. They ignore the fact that video games save the lives of thousands of peoples everyday that by escaping their harsh reality actually find something to live for instead of commiting suicide.
