Definitely Roger Dean will always make my top 10; you just can't go wrong with Topgraphic Oceans and Octopus. Pawn Hearts, Brain Salad Surgery, In the Court of the Crimson King and Animals, no question. I would also include Yes' Relayer (Roger Dean also), Lizard (King Crimson), Leftoverture (Kansas) and The Grand Illusion (Styx).

Holy shit I KNEW this art reminded me of something. I'm not into Dream Theater so I never had the album at hand but of course I had seen it. I discovered McKean with his Black orchid graphic novels, along with Violent Cases? I want to point out that Mirrormask, despite what I've read here and there, is a nice movie, with awesome art of course.

Niamh, great to see a young person who is into prog, I thought only us reprobabtes that were children of the 60s & 70s still liked this stuff! Have you listened to some of the newer prog from the Eastern Block and Australia? Riverside (from Poland) are now one of my all time favourite prog bands and Unitopia are (were - they have disbanded now) like an Ausie Genesis. In fact they have done a Genesis melody which is on UA-cam. Most of Riversides albums are up here too. Take a listen, I think you will like what you hear.

I can imagine the ELP album cover evokes the feeling of a heavy metal album. The sleeve was designed by Swiss surrealist H.R.Giger, who also designed the monster and the stes of the film Alien. His artwork is also featured on the sleeves of several typical metal bands such as Celtic Frost, Triptykon and Danzig.

Since you're from the UK see if you agree with this assessment: the difference between American and British prog bands is that the American bands were harder edged and most of the guitarists did not display a Robert Fripp influence (other Canada's Rush guitarist Alex
Lifeson, especially on the Fly By Night album).

As a kid, I used to browse the record shops and stalls in Kingston (Surrey) and back
in the day there were dozens. There was no way I could afford to buy an album, but
I used them like an Art gallery, wondering what musical treasures may be within and would
time and again go back to the same covers. BTW. It wasn't just prog but Rock albums generally.
The Stones 'their Satanic majesties request' was a favorite. (I was young).
But my Favorite to this day is Tyrannosaurus Rex. 'My people were fair and had sky in their hair but now they're content to wear stars on their brow'.
Probably a contender for longest title too no doubt.

For me my Top 5 prog album covers are
    -Mars Volta--Bedlam In Goliath
    -ELP--Brain Salad Surgery
    -Rush--A Farewell To Kings
    -Yes--Fragile
-King Crimson In The Court Of The Crimson King.
But personally, when it comes to modern prog, for artwork I think Mars Volta dances circles around Tool IMO. All their covers have stunning artwork and are more akin to 70's prog than Tool's minimal modernist look. But of course, it's all subjective.

Hi Niamh - the volume was fine :) Thanks a lot.
I've just discovered your channel. I'm not as young as you, 35 here, but I love watching prog talk from someone else like me who was too young to see all the original great 70s bands in their prime. It's a cool perspective.
I also loved seeing your dads vids - it's great to see he's still got the passion in his 60s. You can tell that your love of the music has reinvigorated him too as he talked about quite a lot you'd introdiced him to.
On album covers, with prog I always think some bands were just lazy and called Roger Dean or Hypnosis to get distinctive covers that anyone could tell were prog just by looking at them! It's almost cheating! Personally whenever I see a Dean cover thats NOT a Yes album, it never seem right. Like the one he did for Uriah Heep, Demons And Wizards. It's like Heep wanted people to think it was a Yes record. ;) His style is so distinctive.
So thanks for the vids, you have a new subscriber :) All the best to you and your dad! Hope to see him on more videos!

Nice picks! I don't know if they qualify as prog (at least the early early stuff maybe), but I've always loved ELO's Eldorado cover with Dorothy's red shoes on it. It fits very well with that album's sound. Keep up the good work & Cheers from Canada!

Did the band members of ELP come up with that slang phrase themselves? I am far from being a prude, but I do find it a bit disconcerting and tacky that one of the most famous prog rock albums is named after a sex act!

Niamh, FIY, the cover for In The Court was painted by Barry Godber as a self portrait look him up you cans the resemblance (without the terrified look) sadly he died shortly after the album was released. A friend of mine painted that cover on a wall from ceiling to floor and twice as long (the gatefold) and it was perfect color tone and perspective.

Funny what you say about Brain Salad Surgery and metal, because this album is the only album in all the progressive music I know, about which I am thinking sometimes: Gosh, would it not be awesome if some band realized a metal rendition of it! To me, Brain Salad Surgery certainly has something like a metal soul :) Thanks for this video, it's great.

Great selections . I would also add :
Pink Floyd : Dark Side of the Moon
Jethro Tull : Stormwatch and Broadsword and the Beast
    Yes : Yesshows and Relayer
    Marillion : misplaced Childhood
Supertramp : Crime of the Century
Genesis : A Trick of the Tail
Rush : Moving Pictures ( I’m biased here because it’s in front of Toronto’s old City Hall , which is much nicer than our newer city hall )

Good Job 👍 great albums, you have good taste in music, all of the album covers you displayed are prog rock classics that have stood the test of time. A few Prog Rock album covers that I like are Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here, Yes Fragile ( though Tales of Tropigraghical Oceans us probably the best ) Rush Permanent Waves,
Genesis And Then There Were Three,
Dream Theater Scenes from a Memory is No Doubt their best cover, I also like the cover for The Astonishing & their latest release Distant Memories Live in London
& finally Tool Fear Inoculum... very trippy cover.

I really like Roger Dean's artwork for progressive rock bands, and he would be my favourite artist for prog covers. I think my favourite prog rock album covers by him are Gentle Giant-Octopus and Asia- debut (the kraken and the glowing orb hovering above the ocean). The artwork on Asia - Aqua is great too (that one is by Rodney Matthews).

Nice choices, Niamh. I think Octopus is my number 1 prog cover. Amazing painting by Roger Dean. Speaking of Roger Dean have you held the right side of the front cover of Tales From Topographic Oceans next to the left side of the back cover of Relayer together? Try it if you've never done it. Genesis definitely have some of my favorite album covers. And the artwork always seems to reflect the music on the album. A Trick Of The Tail cover is probably my favorite cover of theirs but there are so many greats... Nursery Cryme, Wind & Wuthering, Selling England and The Lamb. Congrats on 2k subs!
