Every time I fail a mission, I just crash my TIE fighter into the Star destroyer or wherever, that's how powerful that music is, I really feel that guilty

no disney "canon" film will ever replace the feeling we had playing this game, and this will always be canon to me, and the EU will be the Star Wars canon I share with my son when the time comes.
To be honest, I think Disney did the right thing - the EU was a very mixed bag. There was good stuff for sure (Kyle Katarn is one of my all-time favorite characters), but there was also a huge amount of low-quality inane crap that just didn't fit in, didn't deserve to be considered canon. There were tons of contradictions between the different EU works, which forced the creation of all kinds of strange workarounds and retcons to patch them up. For example - acquiring the Death Star plans. The old EU had a whole bunch of mutually conflicting stories about how they were acquired (the video games alone offer three or four different versions of this), and the workaround for this was the notion that the plans were split into many pieces, each of which was found by different people. The new canon fixed this problem by establishing Rogue One as the one true story of how the DS plans were acquired, and, in my view, this is so much better than the previous chaotic situation.
@@AlexeiVoronin uhhh most of the EU was pretty great, not even close to a mixed bag imo. Thrawn, Jedi Academy, X Wing novels, the Clone Wars comics, the Vong, Tales of the Jedi and pretty much EVERY video game. And it'd be one thing to clean up the canon. But they're not, they are filling it with their own stupid crap so. I'd say the new Disney canon is more of a mixed bag then the old EU ever was. But hey, that's like, my opinion man.

I totally agree bout the video games - I love them all (especially the older ones), and I never much cared if they were considered "canon" or not - they were still amazing experiences. But for the other content - they definitely are some low-quality works here and there. I think the biggest problem with the EU was that it could become a "minefield" of sorts - every time something new was made, the creators would have to constantly check if it contradicted something else, even if it's something small and obscure. Such a limitation could be very stifling, and it's easier to just get a clean slate...

God, the build-up at the very start, flying toward enemy ships, then the HUD lights up, the music changes, and you are fighting for your life. Theres nothing really close to how organic the dynamic background misc is. I dont know any other game that got it right like this now 28 years old game.
I remember playing this so much as a kid that I'd tense my grip on the steering wheel of my car if the car ahead of me at a stop light pulled away too slowly. Automatically went into 'Mon Cal cruiser is entering hyperspace mode' and subconsciously tried to put a last few frustrated shots into it. Whenever I got stuck behind a crappy driver, I'd place my hands on either side of the wheel, make a few little adjustments to an imaginary dial on top of the "flight yoke" like the Tie pilots did in the movies right before firing, and make little "KWSSS KWSSS" laser noises at the offending driver. It was especially fun driving through construction sites where those big Jersey walls on either side made it feel like the death star trench.
Same. I wish you could combine the textured graphics and the iMuse in one game, but the mod that purports to do this is not flawless... so I play the 1995 dos version.
This music is basically the game for me. Don't get me wrong, the rest is wonderful, but on this you can pretty much tell exactly what's going on from what's playing. It's absolute genius, and modern games still don't get it!
There's nothing like this game, it spoiled me rotten with it's excellence in flight combat and ship management. The Rogue Squadron generation have no idea the difference, they may have the visual edge but Tie Fighter is still untouched as far as amazing gameplay.
Just recently reinstalled Tie Fighter Collectors CD I've had forever, with some tweaks to make it work on Win7, and used Tie Fighter Soundtrack Remastered with it- it still holds up remarkably well. I guess in a space combat sim, fancy graphics aren't necessary, having a blast playing through it again with remastered versions of voice and music.
Frank Allen Damn you hah, I couldn't get the collectors CD to work. I have the CD and it just wasn't working on WIN8ult 64-bit. I managed to get the original Dos Floppy one to work via dosbox but that version is half the res and lacks a lot of the nice perks of the C.E. CD. What tweaks did you use? I saw that one page that had some fixed EXE but that didn't work for me. I'm likely to just use an old laptop and video out to play it at this rate.

i bet they pipe this stuff into the cockpits of TIE Fighters and the guys flying them jam to it while they blow up X-Wings. the bit at 6:10 is the best, when that comes on in the game you know its ass kicking time. excellent hunting!
In one of the Rogue Squadron books (now legends) Wedge is listening to music in the cockpit of a stolen TIE fighter while they wait to ambush some imps, so it's totally possible!
When games used to make you feel like you were part of an organic battlefield where anything could happen, and not just a rail-shooter without any rails.
Everybody: You can't possibly master this game without a joystick! Me: (masters the game playing *only* with the mouse) I do enjoy a good challenge. X-Wing and TIE Fighter are both challenging, but in a good way - achieving victory feels rewarding. The games feel like epic journeys, and when you reach the end you can look back towards all the stuff you've been though with nostalgia and appreciation.

I recently re-played X-Wing and TIE Fighter after nearly 10 years of hiatus, and I was glad to find out I had not become rusty. In fact, I seemed to be better at doing certain things than I were back in the early 2010's ;)
I also played it using mouse & keyboard only. Even A-Wings were hard at first, but honestly it's the TIE Advanced and Defender that always outmanoeuvred me. Also, did you have a bug with assault gunboat that made the mouse sensitivity higher, but only in downward direction?
@@Mister5MasterToJa - Yeah, I had exactly the same bug - the Gunboat's nose feels "heavy" and this makes flying it unnecessarily frustrating. This problem occurs only in the CD version, though - Gunboat controls work fine in the older floppy release. I have no idea what they messed up.
These music set is never used in any other Star Wars franchise as far as I know. Personally, I prefer this over prequel soundtracks... maybe just a nostalgia. but still..

'You know, the windows version of Tie Fighter could probably be greatly improved by just taking this arrangement, improving the soundfont a bit so it sounds closer to the quality of actual instruments, and then replacing the battle music track from Tie Fighter with the result of that.' The Gravis Ultrasound version of the music pretty much is full-orchestrated. The playthrough done by 'LLPhoenix' uses Gravis later on in it. It's good stuff.

Excellent work! Just out of curiosity, what SoundFont or DLS did you use? Is this the default Roland GS? I play TIE Fighter Collectors CD all the time in DOSBOX on a SoundBlaster XiFi and use this amazing soundfont called "Chorium" which truly makes the game sound cinematic.
Please for the love of God someone tell me where I can find the piece that plays as soon as a mission starts, the hyperspace bit, then that suspense bit that continues to play after. Its none of the battle midis.
I absolutely love and miss dynamic music scores such as this and Wing Commander 1. My absolute favourite musical pieces from the TIE Fighter battle music (and which I was hoping to hear here) are when large capitol ships jump in, especially the rebel ones. The incredible musical build-up that you hear makes you FEEL the awe and fear of a Mon Calamari cruiser jumping in to turn the tide and kick your Imperial ass. Does anybody know where I might be able to locate those little musical ditties when ships jumped in?
You have to do some file extraction and conversion, but tools for that purpose were made for the original Dark Forces game. Go to df-21DOTnet, then go to the editors and utilities page and download wedit 3.20 and gmidi 0.5. You can extract the files with wedit, and then convert them with gmidi.
I'd include Rebellion in that list. I mean at least both Trek and Wars have 1 good entry in the 4x genre, Rebellion on Star Wars side and Birth of the Federation on the Trek side
I racked up two busted joysticks. Pounding a Mon Cal cruiser down to 1%, just need a few more hits before I can pull up to avoid a collision.... 0% target destroyed, yank joystick back, snap and it goes floppy.
busted one my self. regret it horribly as "new joysticks just dont compare" ( Wingman extreme 16 the old version w mechanical gear axis before they ALL went to this 3d map stuff) actually provided a resisted feel.
I am so pissed. GOG released both the 1994 and 98 version for $10. The 1994 version has the awesome reactive music in this soundtrack, but the voices don't work. I can't hear the flight officer describing the mission or anything. The 1998 version has updated graphics (those from X-Wing vs TIE Fighter) and the voices work, but it replaces the exquisite original soundtrack with live scores from the movies (like in X-Wing vs TIE Fighter). Either way I'm losing a critical piece of the experience. Bummer. Disney, here's what you do: You get an orchestra. You get them to exactly reproduce the original soundtrack. You get a developer. Get them to update the graphics. Keep everything else the same. The missions, the voice acting, everything. Add a few extra missions if you want. Release a new edition of TIE Fighter with these updates and watch sales go nuts from the 90s gamers like me. You might also single-handedly revive the moribund Flight Simulator genre, and breathe more life into joystick sales.
Atreus21 GoG just released the '95 Collector's Edition. Keeps the reactive soundtrack, adds voice and improves graphics. Widely considered the definitive version of the game. Enjoy.
How did you manage to record such a long stretch of the pre-battle section? Back in the day I liked this music so I flew away from attackers for a while to avoid the battle music from starting

Always proud to serve as Maarek Stele a.k.a. Alpha 1 (among other designations; also, it being the designation for your FreeSpace series campaign player characters helps) more than Keyan Farlander and even Ace Azzameen. Also, CD-ROM Edition is best way to enjoy TIE Fighter! (Although the TIE Fighter Total Conversion Mod for X-Wing Alliance Upgrade is gaining traction as the days go by.)

Yea, the escort missions are the hardest, because not only do you have to watch your own ass, you have to watch someone else's one as well. This game is not easy. Even playing on easy mode it is challenging, especially in later missions, where you have to fight TIE Advanced and TIE defenders, they're so goddamn agille... Like... Could you just stay put for a single second? Thankfully later on you get the tractor beam, which is super helpful, but remember, it can also get damaged... The depths they went into to create the game... It's easily one of the most realistic games ever made, even though it literally runs in 320x200 resolution
I never finished this game because I got stuck at some mission : as I had gained the Emperor trust, I was in his personnal escort. The mission start, and the Emperor is flying from 1 Star Destroyer to another. At mid-course, others TIE advanced from the escort starts to shoot at the Emperor and when the Emperor dies, I loose the mission. If I try to shoot the traitors before they can kill the Emperor, I'm flagged as a traitor and I loose the mission :( I never managed to find out how do finish this mission so I stopped play the game :(
Not sure if you gave it a chance afterwards, the comment is old: 3 escort shuttles going from ISD Majestic to ISD Glory, one ES carrying the Emperor. Identify the right one, tell your team to disengage, disable it, destroy the other escort shuttles. Guard the disabled escort shuttle, wait for your transport (i think an ATR) to board, then make sure the transport is reaching the ISD Grey Wolf that just entered the battlefield. FK, i still remember this from the top of my head, but i dont remember what i had for breakfast...
We talking about the first Red Baron, or the far better Red Baron 3D? Oh, and there's also X-Wing Alliance, Il-2 Sturmovik: 1946/Complete Edition, and most especially, FreeSpace 2 with FSPort+Silent Threat: Reborn, Derelict, Blue Planet, and other mods put in it.

Prefer this dos music to the windows version. The film music they used was nice, but this music let you know you were fighting for the Empire.

The Gravis Ultrasound version of the music pretty much is full-orchestrated. The playthrough done by 'LLPhoenix' uses Gravis later on in it. It's good stuff.
Love that playthrough. Shame he doesn't get a lot of subs and likes for his otherwise bingey playthroughs.

Excellent work! Just out of curiosity, what SoundFont or DLS did you use? Is this the default Roland GS? I play TIE Fighter Collectors CD all the time in DOSBOX on a SoundBlaster XiFi and use this amazing soundfont called "Chorium" which truly makes the game sound cinematic.

Please for the love of God someone tell me where I can find the piece that plays as soon as a mission starts, the hyperspace bit, then that suspense bit that continues to play after. Its none of the battle midis.

I absolutely love and miss dynamic music scores such as this and Wing Commander 1.
My absolute favourite musical pieces from the TIE Fighter battle music (and which I was hoping to hear here) are when large capitol ships jump in, especially the rebel ones. The incredible musical build-up that you hear makes you FEEL the awe and fear of a Mon Calamari cruiser jumping in to turn the tide and kick your Imperial ass. Does anybody know where I might be able to locate those little musical ditties when ships jumped in?
You have to do some file extraction and conversion, but tools for that purpose were made for the original Dark Forces game. Go to df-21DOTnet, then go to the editors and utilities page and download wedit 3.20 and gmidi 0.5. You can extract the files with wedit, and then convert them with gmidi.
TIE Fighter, Battlefront (the first one not the EA abominations), Jedi Outcast and Kotor. Games that made the star wars gaming scene great.

I'd include Rebellion in that list. I mean at least both Trek and Wars have 1 good entry in the 4x genre, Rebellion on Star Wars side and Birth of the Federation on the Trek side

I racked up two busted joysticks. Pounding a Mon Cal cruiser down to 1%, just need a few more hits before I can pull up to avoid a collision.... 0% target destroyed, yank joystick back, snap and it goes floppy.

busted one my self. regret it horribly as "new joysticks just dont compare" ( Wingman extreme 16 the old version w mechanical gear axis before they ALL went to this 3d map stuff) actually provided a resisted feel.
Infra mouses are a trillion times better. Could finish the game on Hard difficulty.

GOG released both the 1994 and 98 version for $10. The 1994 version has the awesome reactive music in this soundtrack, but the voices don't work. I can't hear the flight officer describing the mission or anything. The 1998 version has updated graphics (those from X-Wing vs TIE Fighter) and the voices work, but it replaces the exquisite original soundtrack with live scores from the movies (like in X-Wing vs TIE Fighter). Either way I'm losing a critical piece of the experience. Bummer.
Disney, here's what you do: You get an orchestra. You get them to exactly reproduce the original soundtrack. You get a developer. Get them to update the graphics. Keep everything else the same. The missions, the voice acting, everything. Add a few extra missions if you want. Release a new edition of TIE Fighter with these updates and watch sales go nuts from the 90s gamers like me. You might also single-handedly revive the moribund Flight Simulator genre, and breathe more life into joystick sales.
Atreus21 GoG just released the '95 Collector's Edition. Keeps the reactive soundtrack, adds voice and improves graphics. Widely considered the definitive version of the game. Enjoy.

Hardest. Mission. Ever.
Yea, the escort missions are the hardest, because not only do you have to watch your own ass, you have to watch someone else's one as well. This game is not easy. Even playing on easy mode it is challenging, especially in later missions, where you have to fight TIE Advanced and TIE defenders, they're so goddamn agille... Like... Could you just stay put for a single second? Thankfully later on you get the tractor beam, which is super helpful, but remember, it can also get damaged... The depths they went into to create the game... It's easily one of the most realistic games ever made, even though it literally runs in 320x200 resolution

I never finished this game because I got stuck at some mission : as I had gained the Emperor trust, I was in his personnal escort. The mission start, and the Emperor is flying from 1 Star Destroyer to another. At mid-course, others TIE advanced from the escort starts to shoot at the Emperor and when the Emperor dies, I loose the mission. If I try to shoot the traitors before they can kill the Emperor, I'm flagged as a traitor and I loose the mission :(
I never managed to find out how do finish this mission so I stopped play the game :(
Ah, life before internet walkthroughs, amiright? They made games so much harder back then.
Not sure if you gave it a chance afterwards, the comment is old: 3 escort shuttles going from ISD Majestic to ISD Glory, one ES carrying the Emperor. Identify the right one, tell your team to disengage, disable it, destroy the other escort shuttles. Guard the disabled escort shuttle, wait for your transport (i think an ATR) to board, then make sure the transport is reaching the ISD Grey Wolf that just entered the battlefield.
