I Went Chinook Salmon Fishing For My Birthday But Only BIG CHROME COHO Showed Up To The Party

- I decided to do some Chinook Salmon fishing for my birthday on one of Oregon's North Coast rivers. I loaded up with my salmon fishing spinners, a bobber and egg setup, as well as a twitching rod and some jigs. This fishing trip comes after some torrential down pours the week before which "blew out" this river as well as the surrounding rivers. After a nice sunny weekend with more rain forecasted, i decided it was time to get out and see if i could find myself a nice Chinook salmon to take home before things started to get crazy again.
This river gets a later run of Chinook Salmon but i figured we are in the right timeframe and the earlier rains and risen river level should have brought in some nice fresh chrome fish.
It didn't take long to start seeing some action on the water when i arrived. Your typical rollers leaving you signs that they are there, now it comes to getting them to bite!
The water had a really nice hue of green to it, and it was looking prime for fishing. Since the water was off color and it was still early(ish) in the morning, i decided to use a spinner that was bright and could cut through that colored water. The 3/8oz Angling Addict Fishing Co "Yellow Snow glow" Bullet Squid Spinner was an obvious choice.... Chartreuse blade, Chartreuse body, and a Chartreuse hoochie squid. First cast and i was already catching my first Coho, a nice little jack to get things started. It is usually my luck that when i catch a fish first cast, the rest of my day is a struggle to catch another, this was not the case, and there were plenty of Dime Bright Coho Salmon ready to bite.
All these Coho were Native fish so they had to be released, but you will notice that i have a few pop off right at the bank. Some may say this was a lost fish but considering they were wild fish, getting them off the hook and set free without actually having to handle them or net them was good enough for me. Had these been keeper fish i would have landed them quicker instead of giving them time to pop off while i'm inspecting them, looking for an adipose fin and seeing if the fish is a keeper.
In the end this was an amazing day of coho fishing and i felt pretty lucky to have been able to get so many fish on the end of my line.

Happy Birthday, Nick! what an AWESOME day to do and enjoy fishing on a rainy day.
Thank you, haha ya i'm not a fan of fishing in the rain at all.... but it paid off on this day for sure! i haven't had that much fun in a while
Happy Birthday Nick!! Nice to finally meet you a few weeks back! Thanks again for all the help!
Thanks Jason, haha it was funny to look over at you and realize i knew you from somewhere. Didn't take long at all considering you have been around (for the most part) since i started all of this a few years back. I always remember you from your SF hat and all the cool plants on instagram. Hopefully we can get out and fish together at some point, until then, best of luck bro
Happy birthday Nick. Thanks for all the videos.
Thank you! I appreciate the support.. making the videos is one thing but i need people like you guys to be watching them..... much appreciated man
Happy Birthday, Nick! You're the best!

Happy birthday, Nick. What a great way to celebrate!

Happy birthday nick. Good job!,,
Thank you! oh man this was so much fun
Happy birthday man! Looks great dude im glad you had fun! Ive been meaning to make it to the coast rivers recently. thank you for sharing!!
Thank you! haha ya the coastal stuff can be tricky this time of season.. you really gotta get in when you can because with all the rain we usually get, those rivers are blown out most of the time.. Thanks for watching.. good luck out there
Happy Birthday. Good fishing. Thanks!!!
Thank you! this was a lot of fun
Great video as always. Lots of coho everywhere this year. Managed to boat some nook on the Siletz. Happy Birthday!! What a great way to spend it!
Thank you, this was a ton of fun. There are/were definitely a lot of fish, and some big ones at that this year! I'm glad to have been able to get out as much as i did... though i didn't do a lot for youtube vids this season. It's been a while since i've been on the Siletz but i love that river. Glad to hear you were able to boat some chinook!!
Awesome fishing!!!! Happy Birthday, Nick!
Thank You, This was a lot of fun! and i almost decided to NOT go fish on my birthday, im glad i did
Happy birthday!! love to see it man !!!
Thank You. This was a ton of fun
Happy belated birthday, Nick! I have one week left in the PNW before I PCS to Cali. Not really looking forward to leaving the beauty and fishing, but duty calls. Keep the videos coming, it’ll be what gets me through!!
Hey Taylor! I hope you enjoy your last week before heading to Cali. I'd definitely miss the beauty and fishing if i had to leave. I will do my best to keep the videos coming. I'm planning on getting out a lot more this next year, whether it's fishing or just some fun outdoor adventures. Thanks for your service. Hopefully California is good to ya.. i send a lot of spinners down there so there's gotta be some salmon fishing around somewhere :)
Happy birthday!
Great way to spend the day.
Thank you, i almost didn't go fish, i'm so glad that i did or i would have never known what was waiting for me :) This turned into such an amazing day!
Happy birthday man. Love those big ones that you catch.
Thank You, I love finding those tanks! It was a good season for Coho this year with a lot of big fish
Happy Birthday Nick. Awesome fishing and great video.
Thanks Tim! oh man this was a lot of fun
Happy Birthday Nick what a Birthday gift awesome video
Thank you! this was such an epic day. I'm always chasing that feeling you get when you realize you've got one on, and to get that so many times in one day was pretty amazing
Happy birthday Nick, Very nice catches.
Thank you, i had a friggin blast!
Happy late birthday. Looks like a lot of fun.
Thank you, it was so amazing to be able to get that many fish on! makes up for those days where there seemed to be no fish in the river
Gotta tell ya...I enjoy your videos. We're from Montana and love the hunting and fishing and great outdoors. We try to spend time in your beautiful country every year. I sure enjoy learning your techniques and am lookin forward to trying them out. Thanks for your videos and thank you for your service, young feller!
Happy birthday Nick!! Love your products and videos. What a great day of fishing
We need some merch from you! Would love to promote your company!!
Thank You, this was a load of fun. I fish spinners mainly because of how much i enjoy feeling the strike from a fish. It was pretty exciting to get to feel that multiple times with some nice big fish
That'd be great! I've been contemplating on getting some stuff out but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I know that stuff would get bought up but it's not an inexpensive investment. I'd definitely like more out there than just the spinners
Happy birthday 🥳
Thank You!
Happy belated bday looks like a lot of fun I hope 2 c new vids from u in the future I'm a new subscriber
Thank you, i've got a lot of plans for this next year so there should be a lot more videos coming.. thanks for subscribing!

Cool man pure fishing adventure!!!
That was a lot of fun... always nice to have a day with so many hook ups after having so many days of absolutely nothing!
What better way to spend your birthday than out on the water, catching beautiful salmon. Way to go !!! 👍
I definitely wan't expecting a day like this! Spending a day in the rain was well worth it....... and i almost didn't go fish that day lol
Nice fish! Happy birthday man!
Thank You! This was so fun
Great way to start my morning.
Glad to hear it, this definitely made for a great day… I don’t remember if I accepted your request to the FB group or not yet… time to check lol

amazing video man! I caught my first ever chromes down at the coast as well!
Happy birthday bro! 🎣
Thank You!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Nick, where have you been? I thought that the Game Warden busted you for poaching and took away your gear for (2) years, or you got MARRIED? I haven't seen the " BEST FISHING VIDEOS " in the NW for what seems like a couple years? Nick Roberts you are still the MAN ! ! ! I hope this is the beginning of more videos to come. Tight Lines My Fiend, keep em coming. ;-)
Happy birthday my DOOD!!!
Thanks broski! I apologize for my crap communication. I will be in touch soon. Definitely some plunking for steel this season!!
@@AnglingAddictsPNW no worries my bro!! We all feel the pinch.
I'm here for you!! We still need to go to a Timbers game someday too.
Awesome 👍

hello my dear friend.enjoy fishing.ang happy birthday to you🤗🎂🎉🎊new subscriber here.hope to see you🤗
That looks like a great birthday to me !
I feel pretty lucky to have been able to have a day like this... i don't need take home fish, i'm all about that moment a fish strikes and you realize that there is a fish on the end of your line. To have been able to feel that multiple times was pretty sweet!
HBD God Bless
Hi
Thank You!
Hey Nick, happy belated birthday man, its late because I just found your channel and this video. Awesome videos man keep up the great content, I just got into salmon and steelhead fishing any chance you'll share the location? I know it's a far shot but I live for places like the one in this video. God bless
Thats what's up!
Were you able to see the post i did in the community about not getting notifications? You weren't the only one to mention it to me. Hopefully UA-cam gets it figured out.. oh man this was such a fun day!
The best gift of your birthday.
I wish to have the same gift on my birthday to,
This was so much fun! I almost didn't go fish on my birthday, i'm glad i did. Good luck to you!!
My god you lost two big fish hehe by the way hapoy bday bro🎈🎉🎊🎂🥳
Thank You...Haha ya there were some pretty big fish in there!
Good day on the river. A lot of people don't get that many fish in a year...
Looks like it's time to wash & treat your jacket and remove the bungie cord on your pliers.
It's days like these that make up for all of the slow days... just to be able to feel that many strikes in a day was incredible!
Jacket is washed and treated and i ripped that bungie off my pliers on like the 3rd or 4th fish... it's never been in my way so much lol. Thanks for watching!
Could think of far worse days! Mainly any day I go out haha.
Haha.... this day definitely made up for a lot of the slow days
Happy Birthday man! Hey, what waders are you wearing?
Thank You! The waders are by Lost Creek. I love them! They are perfect for when you aren't actually needing chest waders
We were on the Wilson today, we landed some awesome fish.
What kind of fish
@@thefishingaddict368 Chum, coho and chinook.
Actually was getting tired of catching the Chum. 🤣
haha after multiple chum catches it's pretty easy to be over it....by the time you hook a chinook you don't have much left in your arms lol
Let them tire out a bit, using braid and horsing them in just creates a big hole at the hook set point and that’s why they keep popping off
Happy birthday Nick i thought i seen you at my local river to day and was all excited to meet you ,but it wasn't you guy was nice tho 😄 what sent you use on spinners?
hi
haha it wouldn't be the first time someone has said that they mistook someone else as me and went to say hi.... i'm elusive bro lol.. i always say i hope to see you on the river, but i'm usually trying to stay out of sight. I'm not particular on any specific scent but i usually have some Anise/Bloody Tuna with me. I usually have a couple of random ones. I use them for more of a masking scent than anything...
@@AnglingAddictsPNW nice ,hope you had a good birthday
hey Nick good job on that coho was that using the eggs and I bet you caught him in the morning? seems like first light is when The coho bite and then it shuts off quickly
That is certainly the case up here in SW Washington.First hour, hour and a half after daylight then they shut off like a switch.
I plan on doing some steelhead fishing next month in My bday 🥳
Hey Nick, any chance you could name the rivers that you are fishing without giving up your secret fishing hole
Nice videos. What kind of recording setup do you have?
Thank You! I just use 2 GoPro Hero 8 blacks and my Iphone 10 xs max.. and an external mic that i don't use nearly enough
Wheres the winter steelhead videos?!
Hey Nick I'm in Portland any trying for the steelhead Derby
does even give the fish a chance lol is that 50lb test
have questions please today I was fishing for king salmon I get one but It was pulled very strong 💪🏼 till I lost it 😭😭😭 but my questions is even my real was president 4000 6.2.1 and even my drag was locked but the fish was drug my line like crazy
even I tied the dragin the real till it was locked but still pull my lien so what I suppose to do in that case ?
Please help 😉
need to find me places like these
finding spots like these are one thing, knowing when to fish them and how is key.. no point in casting into water that has no fish in it. I stumbled across this place when i was on a mission to find new waters to fish. I was pretty stoked to come back the next season to find some nice fish in it. I've been fishing for years and i'm still trying to explore new areas to find days like these.. best of luck, keep at it
@@AnglingAddictsPNW thanks boss
What river was that?
Sukses
I would consider that a pretty good bday :) Awesome fish, man!
Thank You, haha and here i almost didn't go fish on my birthday, i'm so glad i did. this was a ton of fun!
@@AnglingAddictsPNW Sometimes the days you have to convince yourself to go are better than the ones you plan :)
Hot Chow !
That's my boy
Nice fish! I noticed you have an SUV. As an angler, do you wish you had a truck bed, or truck bed with a topper, over a SUV?
Sorry for the late reply. Because of how much I sleep in my rig, I’d say SUV for sure. It’s way more comfortable and convenient and I really don’t like the idea of just being in the back of a truck with a topper. What I love about the armada is all the storage space it already has and rod and gear space is simple and more protected
I could have sworn I knew you in the Army?
Ever thought about making and selling twitchers?
I have..... i think i will maybe get around to it next year depending on where i'm at with the spinners, but i'm hoping to get a lot more product out
You’re monster cAtching then left and right
No I don't know where your fishing dude but I fish in upstate New York and salmon don't feed they might bite out of aggression but they don't feed when they're spawning when they come up the river and we can only use a single hook I know you got to treble hook on there and you're using some kind of magic bait or whatever you're playing with but you're not going to connect any snook salmon the way you're fishing you're doing it all wrong and you know it the way you have your gear set up
This is probably one of the most odd comments I’ve read. I know you guys don’t use them much over there in New York, but it’s called a spinner lol, and I make it pretty clear in the video that I started with a single point barbless hook, then switched to a single point hook with a barb, no treble…. And I think you mean chinook salmon, not a snook salmon. A snook is a completely different fish 🤦♂️and as for “magic bait” you are correct there. These spinners catch a lot of fish… have fun doing whatever it is that you do in New York… maybe take some time to educate yourself a bit more on salmon fishing techniques before you spew nonsense
Hey man just a quick tip I see in almost every salmon video u tend to horse them in but just reeling it in non stop (hey u don’t loose them quite often) just a heads up might be bad in the future if u hook fat salmon landing ration would be better
Oregon or Washington
Looks like oregon
oregon, this is a river near tillamook
@@paulm1882 what river?
reeling against drag destroys spinning reels.. lift the rod then reel down don't reel while fish is pulling
Haha Old Habits Are Hard To Break, i've been working on it. I appreciate the advice/tip
