With 300 shafts hanging on the wall and he used the same shaft in every head. James liked the Titleist best feel wise so start switching shafts to get that spin rate down.
I'm sure you're already aware of this James but if you just get your attack angle up a few degrees you'll drop your spin considerably and pick up at least 20yds. It might be as simple as a higher tee and moving the ball forward a bit as your swing is very good.
No doubt, he was living in that 0-2 on hus attack angle. Even if he reversed it and got it between 0+2, he see a big change. The last ball he hit was his best and he was -0.4. If he was at +2 that would have been over 300
Titleist rules. last year i was custom fit for TSR3 with a HZDRS Red CB, 6.0 50 gram shaft, best driver/shaft for me ever. certainly not changing anytime soon, at least for 3-4 years
Was there last week…great experience but my own driver couldn’t be beaten. The fitter asked if I could top a few to give him a chance, Because of his honesty and explanations I will be making an appointment for a hybrid and wood fitting. Thanks SGGT
I had a driver fitting with SGGT in Edinburgh last month and it was easily the best fitting I've ever had. I had no preferences going in except I didn't want a Ping. I picked SGGT because you can try any shaft and head brand. It's a massive selection. They fitted the shaft first. After about 7 different shafts I picked out the Accra GX 250 Green, not the fitter (I see some people saying it's always Accra with fitters but it really was the best feeling shaft for me and we tried it against 5 other brands). Loved it. We then went through 7 or 8 different heads. I liked the Titleist 2 and 3 but .... I couldn't argue with numbers on the Ping G430. I gained 20 yrds that I've now seen replicated on the course but more importantly the dispersion was so much better than the Sim2 I was switching from. They send you a video and the trackman data the fitting to trawl through. I think the fact no stone was left unturned because they don't favour any single brand and you can analyise how you hit each afterwards gives a real confidence that you've ended up with the best the option. From then on, if you hit a bad one you know it's you and not the driver - so, that helps in a way as well. Finally, they have a shaft pureing machine which finds the best orientation of the shaft when they build your club. How much marginal effect that has I don't know but what I do know is it's easily the best feeling, best performing driver I've ever owned. I'll definitely be going back for an iron fitting soon.
Unless some content was cut out I was a little surprised you didn’t try more shaft combos with the Titleist head, especially given some of the spin numbers….?
ACRRA's for everybody !!! nothing you can do with being fit into 2024 model heads but this is the exact complaint about fitters in my area pushing Accra shafts which are said to have the largest profit for the fitter, now they do make nice shafts but what fitter wouldn't have you hit some from the Ventus Velocore line the most popular shaft over the last 5 years in the Titleist and a Counter Balanced shaft of another make in the Ping because of how much heavier the Ping Head is, even a Auto Flex with the head weight set properly for that shaft as they are very sensitive to this and James I wrote this not to be negative towards you or your Videos ,I watch them everyday and like them very much , its more for that golfer that has never been fit and would think this is a proper fitting which imo it is not , maybe all the other shafts were edited out but it didn't look like that.
I wish I had time currently mate. Lots of comments asking this. But young family and running businesses doesn’t lead to weekly golf Lessons and practice. I do like to think this is a real world fitting tbh with my game as it is at the moment
never seen a single swing where the attack angle was even 0. if you hit down on it between -0.8 and -2 would that not explain the high spin numbers? and doesn't high spin lose distance...I am obv no club fitter but I thought launch between 12 and 14 and spin 2200 to 2600 was optimum...would it not be better to have a driver lesson to hit up a bit more ?
I certainly agree with you. I took lessons this past year and have really improved my negative attack angle for my wedges through to my fairway wood. Things seem to be getting better and I broke 90 a couple of times to finish the year. But the last few times I’ve gone to a simulator I cannot hit driver! I’m hitting 30 yards less than I used to and my attack angle is -3°. I think you’re bang on. Even when I flush it there’s no distance because the spin is at 4000! Now I need to fix that. 👍🤦♂️🤣. Gotta get that attack angle back between zero and 2°. 👍
To me since he has a very repeatable action, I personally would have messed with more shaft brand/flex/weight options to see if there was anything we could find in terms of spin reduction. With his action, he creates a ton of spin, especially on misses and thus costing him yards. Find a couple that were good with feel and numbers, and then test some various heads, head to head with those shafts. Not dogging this lad about the fit and his process at all, everyone has their own way to do it. At the end of the day if the results are good and the club works for the player, that is great.
Thanks for showing your numbers during the fitting. Helps to understand why certain combinations don't work for me. I live in +4 attack angle range with a few degrees in to out swing path. Those low spin drivers aren't going to be the happiest with that.
You could get an extra 1O-15 yards out of every driver there if you could hit it straight or put a slight draw on it. Just pissing away yards with that spinning, cut drive flight.
I had my very first custom fit for clubs 2 months ago. I went in with the same attitude as you, to be fitted with the best clubs for me. They fitted me for the shaft and then heads. Walk out $6500 less in my pocket but a very nice set of Callaway Apex TI fusion and Titleist GT2 9deg. Just ordered a 56 and 60 deg Takomo wedges.
That comment the big fella made about a club golfer turning up and living to play and enjoy golf with your B game because your not playing to your A game every week is the best simple thing I’vee heard. I have never thought of it that way.
I've been fitted by SGGT and can't recommend them enough. I guess we don't know why James only tried the one shaft, but generally, the fitters understand what works and what doesn't, to a degree. I would say I have always tried a handful of shafts in my fittings with SGGT.
First time ever fitted for a driver at the end of February and just can't use it. Payed £100 extra for the shaft that they recommended 45r. Cobra darkspeed x Totally put me off ever going for a fitting again. Mid handicapper, is it just all sales and kidologgy! Stuck with an expensive club. Had 7 break through injury and hoped by getting fit it would help, injury not a cause either. Enjoying the video of your fitting though
Thats interesting what you say about Titleist and their shaft choices. I have been to two fitting withg them with 2x very different results and i do not think the offerings that Titleist do actually fully suit how good that GT2 & GT3 heads are to the general club player. Having now tried a GT3 in 8 degree with a TPT 18Hi Shaft with stunning results, i truely think more people need to go to the likesof SGGT and get properly fitted.
Have you thought about addressing your out to in swing path? It's quite extreme and obviously you lose a fair bit of distance. Your first move seems to be picking the club up immediately. Still, your fairway stats must be pretty decent. Be interesting to see you on a pressure pad with a good instructor.
The emphasis should also be on the spin rate. I had issues with high spin and after a great lesson (just one) I was able to reduce the spin rate from 3-4 k to 1800-2200. This made the biggest changes in distance. With the swing speed he has, carry I believe should be better than 260 if the launch angle is prime. I believe he would be better off to control spin, then retake this fitting. Just my opinion.
Good stuff! I went the opposite direction. Was in a TSi3, 8° with 55R Tensei Blue raw. Recently switched to a 10°(D1 - 9.25ish) TSr2 with hazrdus black 6.0. Overall performance is actually quite similar but the dreaded "Toe-y dipper" is gone...
Ive never been fitted but I would think in the beginning your just warming up and at the end of the fitting your wearing out. So your being fitted on your swing near the halfway point. So some club combos aren't really getting a fair look
All fitters are different. True in play has alot to go off of and you did try different heads. I would have messed with the loft alittle more once you found the right feel and look. Again like you mentioned its November new stuff is coming but i still from what i see think you have room for massive improvements😊
Good video. Good fitting. He listened to what you were doing, asked what you wanted, and guided you through the process to find the best driver for you on that day. Good luck, James. By the way, a fitter can't fix a poor swing. Not you, James
Just a subjective view of the carry and total distances during the video were around the same values 255 carry and 275 total almost regardless of combination of head and shaft. Then the final decision showed better results. All of which, as a mathematician and engineer, lead me to believe that each person has a typical shot learned over many years, and that the technology has only a marginal effect for high quality golfers. Looking at this from the other scale of player, can the high handicap golfer make enough identical swings to detect the effect of changes in head and shaft or will the different swings mask the effect of the technology changes? I really appreciated the effort you put into this excellent content. Pity you don't know any high handicap golfers that could benefit from the skills shown by the fitter.
I would have been interested to see how the swingweight shifted by just changing those heads on the same shaft too. Like others surprised it was just one shaft through the whole process
Here's a question. At what clubhead speed does an upward path start to beat a downward path, and is it determined by loft? The reason for asking is that when i was a lad, driver had almost no loft and we were taught to hit down on the ball 😮
Depends on your goals. PGA Tour players are mostly around zero AoA but they have loads of speed & are firing at narrow fairways with deep rough. LPGA players are mostly 4-5 up, which is better for maximizing distance. Amateur golfers should emulate the LPGA players. Re: your childhood comment, the Pro V1 changed everything from the balata era. Those balls spun so much that if you hit up on them, they'd go to the moon & you'd lose a ton of distance. Everything's different now.
Never had a fitting here myself but several local players have in Edinburgh and all ended up with a very expensive shaft upgrade that done nil on the golf course.
Hey James im going for my first fitting in the next few weeks. Was wondering if I should go to the pga superstore or club champion? Or does it even matter?
Is it realistic to go to a fitting and ask for the combination regardless of price? The fittings I’ve been through the first question was what was my price point?
How do fitters handle preferences for grip size during a fitting ? (I always seem to get handed a std grip and struggle to adapt from the midsize MCC plus 4s I play normally).
At the fitting I had at SGGT, they blow the grips off and put your preferred grip - I also use a midsize MCC plus 4. They measure it as a seperate entry in trackman so you can see the difference the grip is making.
Question i have for you, James. Would it be worth having the fitting now given it is only a few months before there is another new line of drivers coming out. Wouldn't January or February be the time to get fit so you have a full look at all the new lineups?
I would love to get a proper shaft fitting with my driver. I have just changed drivers all my days until now I got a ping…… seems to have sorted me out 😝
@ wud love to try out some shafts like the tour ad. Get the speed up in the swing for sum bigger distance! Ping driver is the only driver I’ve ever tried that makes me feel confident on the tee
Needed to try a less spinny shaft. Regardless of head you had too many shots over 3000 rpm. Poor fitting in my opinion. Also backswing was too vertical leading to poor angle of attack. Like -1.8? Cost you yards. Fitter should have noticed and had you try hitting up on the ball.
cant believe the fitter didnt try different shafts, flex's, weight - ie reduce head weight for softer shafts. Guarentee the club head speed and carry would increase. Daft and a waste of time.
It’s cheeper to adapt yourself to a driver than the driver to you. All drivers are about the same for the average/ weekend golfer work the cost around what you can afford.
@JamesRobinsonGolf James you didn't change shafts at all and were giving your opinions on the different heads you liked and disliked. Ps I love u man lol
Come back when your swinging better 2 down seven across isn’t going to produce anything you can fit out of🤦♂️. Your spin loft window is too narrow . That’s why it’s launching so low and spinning so much . Too much loft and a bad attack angle can’t be fixed without a lesson.
What about people who don’t want a lesson and to change? The beauty about these videos is I try to make them for EVERYONE and a fitting is a fitting. I appreciate your feedback but I like to see it from both points of view

Where did you get this driver fitting done?
I do love this type of video
Have you ever tried a VA composite shaft ?
If people would invest more time on swing technique you would get more consistent results. How many shots did he say that was heely? Or hit it spinny
Love these SGGT videos, did you buy the irons from the last time??
Video coming soon 👀⛳️
Never had a fitting here myself but several local players have in Edinburgh and all ended up with a very expensive shaft upgrade that done nil on the golf course.
And now folks… watch James rob a bank to pay for an upcharge shaft! 😂
Why didn’t you try other shafts
Hey James im going for my first fitting in the next few weeks. Was wondering if I should go to the pga superstore or club champion? Or does it even matter?
I have one question when you hit the cobra it didn't look like you used the LS head.
Why is the attack angle in negative?
Is it realistic to go to a fitting and ask for the combination regardless of price? The fittings I’ve been through the first question was what was my price point?
interesting test there... given the titleist fitting...
Same as the iron video, one shaft the whole time, especially when you're striking it like that
please try the 1k black shaft in the Titleist, it is awesome
Add 10 carry easy by addressing the attack angle. Even when you are -.6 or so it’s better. But -1 to -2+ with your speed isn’t.
Ive tried! lol
People are commenting like its easy
@@JamesRobinsonGolf😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 it's cos your a pro James so it must be really easy 🤯🤯😂😂

Get fit now. Wait for new clubs. Pay a lot less for “ last years model”
@ he doesnt pay for the clubs
Is it just new drivers that come out then? or irons as well usually?
A spin rate of 3500 to 4000 seems way to high for driver. I’ve always seen around 2300 as ideal.
Preview of the ping g440 head cover in the bags next to the screen one wonders.
It’s the ping junior set mate lol
Heard somewhere maybe trottie golf 3 swings shots he will change shaft out
That’s because he can only fit a Taylormade head… 👍🏼⛳️
@JamesRobinsonGolf aye that's very true interesting though all different like golf swings
Go in for a shaft fitting test one shaft and every single head 😅l😢. Bad fitting?
I would love to get a proper shaft fitting with my driver. I have just changed drivers all my days until now I got a ping…… seems to have sorted me out 😝
Ping with the proper shaft is a winning combo
@ wud love to try out some shafts like the tour ad. Get the speed up in the swing for sum bigger distance! Ping driver is the only driver I’ve ever tried that makes me feel confident on the tee
Ping sorts most people out
So in the end what would that combo cost??
Accra shaft is 300ish. Driver is 650ish
Should have tried the LS cobra. Because you didnt play that and its good.
Shafts make all the difference
100% agree all the heads now are relatively the same and even few years back
You need to get the autoflex shaft
wall full of shafts and he only tries 2. Epic fail
Surely it’s your attack angle……your best drive was about -0.4……….lots of the others were -3s or worse. Whatever happened to hitting up on the ball?
How on earth is that 1.49 smash off bottom of the head, that is wild. I wish I could do that, most Smash I see is 1.44ish.
Totally depends on what device you use. Wouldn’t read too much in to it
Needed to try a less spinny shaft. Regardless of head you had too many shots over 3000 rpm. Poor fitting in my opinion. Also backswing was too vertical leading to poor angle of attack. Like -1.8? Cost you yards. Fitter should have noticed and had you try hitting up on the ball.
A good fitter will never try to change your swing dynamics Mike. It’s not their job to
Scott fitted me years ago
cant believe the fitter didnt try different shafts, flex's, weight - ie reduce head weight for softer shafts. Guarentee the club head speed and carry would increase. Daft and a waste of time.

Because it’s my channel Russell? Chris puts his fitting on his channel? Very odd comment
Where's dark horses.... srixon cleveland Wilson... bet you they'd go better?
Once you were settled on the head, surprised ni ither shaft was tested to see how much more you might be able to get out of the head.
A little disappointed really, tried the same shaft throughout. So really this was just a head fitting
We had narrowed the shaft down to that one? I don’t get the issue?
It’s cheeper to adapt yourself to a driver than the driver to you. All drivers are about the same for the average/ weekend golfer work the cost around what you can afford.

There’s no such word as ‘unbias’. Get a grip James.
