Came for the guitars, stayed for the playing.
Unbelievable good playing from both of you, big thumps up
The Eastman is simply better than any Non-Historic reissue Gibson out there, and the Eastman is about 2-2.5k for the varnish one (the nicer one). You cant seriously think of Gibson anymore UNLESS you are willing to let go of 6-10 thousand dollars for a historic reissue, those guitars are absolutely amazing but the price is an abomination.
Buy the Gibson historic second hand ...helps out a bit. They are a better guitar than Eastman...
Your player chemistry is amazing. You lean into each others nuances the way only TRUE companion players know how - massive props for that!
🍀Really wanted the Eastman to crush it... But the Gibbo takes it, by a whisker.

Haha thanks brother! Keep up the great work and thanks for the kind words :)
I have actually spent 3h in a guitar shop compaing the hell out of these two models. In the End it's a matter of taste. The Les Paul bites a little more in the mid and hi frequencys while the Eastman is very well balanced. Both are awsome when it comes to clarity and definition . I picked the Eastman simply because to me it felt better.
Thanks for sharing! :)
Do you know if it had the Lollars?
@@burt2800 Yes, and it did!
nd better price.
@@thefellowshipofacoustics @David Cookson As far as I know the Lollar Imperial are only installed in the Varnish model, that it is an aged one. The Sb59 in the video seems to be the Gloss Nitro model which is equiped with Seymour Duncan '59
Great format with them switching the guitars around, love to see some more!
Coming right up, thanks! :)
The Gibson has more bite, upper mids so a more aggressive tone. The Eastman sounds rounder, warmer and overall a more thicker sound. None of the guitars are better than the other, different from each other I would say. I wish I could afford them both😁 Nice channel, guys and if it is allowed and Corona is finished I will visit your shop !
Thanks Arjan! You're always to already book a 'Private Shopping' appointment, coffee is included ;)
I know this comment is very old but I think the differences we are hearing are the different pickups Lollar Imperials in the Eastman vs the Gibson Buestbuckers. I agree with everything you said just an FYI.
I prefer the thicker more full sound of the Eastman. How much does those guitars cost?
The Eastman SB59 costs €2029,- and the aged version €2369,- (www.tfoa.eu/shop/sb59-ov-gb-eastman-sb59-v-antique-goldburst-76446). Feel free to contact us at info@tfoa.eu for more info and availability!
Fun comparison. Proves again to me how different each individual
guitar can be. I have a 2020 SB59/v which I bought for it’s amazing feel to that beautiful aged violin varnish. Of course it sounds and plays brilliantly too. However objectively speaking, my SB59/v is very articulate, more HiFi than the earthy and richer Custom Shop LP’s I have. So it was interesting to hear you guys feel kind of the opposite about these two specimens. Going back to my comment about the Antique Varnish finish… it’s truly superb. Super thin and very smooth. Superior to the touch than any modern nitro I have experienced, including top shelf Fender/Gibson. Cheers 🍻
Thanks for your comment! Eastman shouldn't be underestimated indeed, couldn't agree with you more on the finish.
I have the SB59, I really am picky as fuck with humbuckers so I put a pair of Monty PAF’s and it made it a whole other guitar. I also flipped the magnet in the neck pickup for the out of phase tone. All in all, this guitar is amazing
Still a good deal in the end! Good on you for customising you're SB :)
great format. both sound fine, but I cant help but think looking at the two just how much better the Gibson looks, mostly because of the lower horn. as far as how they sound I mean Im replacing the pickups in either one lol.
Thank you! I agree, lookswise the Gibson wins this one. But the gold and black SB's are absolutely stunning... ;)
Awesome playing guys 👍🏼👍🏼
Thx John!
Both guitar's had a brighter tone when Leif played them. Was wondering what type and thickness picks you both use?
A fair comparison. When I compared the two, I found them to be neck and neck... pun intended. I will add, though, that there is always a lot of variances between individual guitars. I have two SB-59s. One sounds quite bright, and the other is quite dark. I like them both for different reasons.
Absolutely! We'd always advise people to try the guitars in person, for that specific reason :)
They both sound great only a few mins into this vid and wow!!! Great playing great guitars, incase you don't mention it what amps are you using?
Both are using a Milkman 20w Creamer!
I’d also say the amp on the right sounds more muffled and muddy whichever guitar is plugged into it. No point doing an A/B test if the rest of the signal chain isn’t identical. What this video showed is the amp on the left is better/had better EQ settings than the one on the right.
The moment the gain kicked in, the Eastman was more articulate.
too bad you did not comapare the gibson with a 59v of eastman with the lollar imperial pick ups. That is a more honest comparison , i believe this model of eastman is the cheaper one with the antique pick ups from seymour duncan. Although it sounds good, the varnished eastman is higher end.
Not the Antiquity SDs but the '59 SDs
Different fingers Different pleasures !
For those commenting on the SB59 look, it is worth mentioning that those guitar don’t all have the same top. Some are more flamed than others. Have a look on Reverb.
Did either of you notice the size difference in the bodies of these guitars while playing? Just curious as I am looking to purchase a good quality single cut like these two. I'm also looking at Maybach, Tokai, Edwards models.
Not only the size, but the weight
How do theses two guitars compare in terms of feel neck weight etc?
Eastmans are usually lighter than Gibsons
Lol 🤣 I have both. The Eastman sounds bigger while the Gibson plays better but the Eastern is definitely a better value for money
Thanks for sharing Ageel! :)
Did the two amps have same speaker? And was those exactly same amps?
fair comparison would be between R9 and SB59/V
Not really R9 is $7000-$8000 and sb59/v is 2200.
@@chrisdunn2176
Yes, gibson (r7/r8/r9) is way more expensive but Eastman( /v) version is a better guitar..(tuning/finish/lighter/frets/binding/fretboard..one piece headstock..)so,..
@@marioa5388 I understand I own Eastman Guitars.. But they are not a R9.. They are definitely better than their Standard line but Custom Shop is pushing it don't you think...
@@chrisdunn2176
they are roughly there somewhere…but is to much money for hystoric gibson
@@marioa5388 Historic Gibsons Les Paul now starts around $50,000. $7000 is pretty good to get you pretty damn close.
Would be interesting to hear them w identical pickups
I bet that would make the discussion a lot harder!
It would be interesting to see both guitars with the same pickups set at the same height.. to hear the differences in the actual guitars.. l have a SB59v and a "17" LP Standard.. the differences are pretty big, the Burst buckets vs Lollar Emperials is not a very fair comparison, it's like comparing a Corvette w 500hp to a Lamborghini with 500hp.. there are obvious cost differences however most might not see the differences.. enjoyed your playing.. the left was a bit louder in your demo which l believe adds to the "clarity" you spoke of.. l think a speaker sounds muddier low power driven vs higher driven.. Thanks..it was very much enjoyed!
Coen & Maarten ??? You look so different. What happened, did you go to the hair salon ??? LOL
Haha shoot, we hoped you wouldn't notice :p
The Eastman is flawless.... can't say the same for Gibson and I've owned a few.
So 2 euro dudes are playing an American classic guitar and a Chinese clone guitar, and they are using blues licks derived from African American culture to highlight each guitar's sound. It's a diverse world. Great playing and both guitars are great. I love the look of a burst LP without a pick guard and I like a sweeter sound. The Eastman is my winner but it's subjective and both are great. By the way, I thought that was some killer playing.
Thanks for commenting and sharing! :)
Is there some kind of rosewood that feels like ebony?
Not 100%, you'd have to go for the hardest rosewood you could find ;)
A lot of people look down their noses at Pau Ferro. But I have three Mike Lipe guitars all with roasted Pau Ferro fretboards. Now Mike was only selecting the best examples of this wood for his guitars but they're every bit as smooth as my PRS Custom 22's Gaboon Ebony board, just lighter in colour.
Dollar for dollar give me the Eastman every day. What you get for the money it’s a “better guitar.” To get those specs and handmade quality you have to spend $5k+
To add on - the “v” version of the Eastman has different pickups and definitely sounds more airy and woody. It sounds much more vintage
One is not more open than the other, the dominant frequency in the Gibson is just higher.
Eastman!!!
I like the eastman clean and the gibson dirty... Gibson has more mid spank which sounds more aggressive, rock and roll, overdriven. Both are insanely good thou
Swap pickups in them then see. Or put the same pickups in both!!!
But there are so much more factors at play!
Really cool way to compare these guitars!! Both players have a good chemistry and were on the same page and were playing some very tasty guitar! I think the Les Paul had more bite and highs. Creamy is a good way to describe the Eastman. I have seen more than a few Eastmen SB59 videos wondering how the tone really compares, and this really cemented my thoughts. The Eastmen is a fantastic guitar, but is not as sharp as the Les Paul. Eastmen might want to experiment with different pickups to bring it even closer or at least to give it a more biting tone on the bridge pickup! Good stuff!!
Thanks Eric, coulnd't agree more with you!
Loved the "Midnight in Harlem" jam to start the video. I'd be happy with either guitar 🙂
I own an eastman SB59 and I’d put it up against a Gibson R9 eastmans are easier to play they have jescar stainless Frets and an Ebony board.
I’ve got one too! But they don’t come with stainless steel frets mate, they’re just Jescar brand (IMO best I’m the world). I don’t mean any offence with this either
Killer licks ❤
Thanks Bob!
I thought the eastman was softer, but then they swapped and the gibson sounded softer. must have been the amps or player.
I have both but i’m selling my Gibson
Eastman is starting to take over!
Gibson has better harmonics, warmth and bite, but both sound great.
Thanks Keith!
Left amp sounds better lol
Do we know what amp this is?
@@cazsnap milkman creamer
Eastman all day
Not a fair contest the Beige Milkman sound like it has a blanket jn front of the the speaker
That's why they switch around!
I like how the Gibson sounds and looks better
Eastman sounds better, Gibson looks better
Tone differences😢 seem to be in the players’ touch to a large degree
The player is absolutely part of the equation. In the end, it will be what suits each player best and fits his or her preferences :)
If you're a professional/gigging musician, where image counts and you can expense the cost on your taxes, then get a Les Paul. Otherwise, there's absolutely no reason to spend so much more $$ on a guitar that is, at best, a marginal improvement in terms of sound. The cheapest R9 on Reverb as of this writing is $4900 and the Eastman is < $2000. Aside from the headstock, is the R9 2.5 times better than the SB59? No.
Good point Mike! Of course the the price won't indicate a direct corrolation with quality on a product. There are plenty of reasons the Gibson costs more ánd is worth it ;)
Soundwise, I'd agree. The Eastman is not far off ;)
For better impact, I like to use "250x" lol. My only complaints with the Eastman is the 1 11/16" nut width, the Jazz humbucker (please use two '59s, prob solved), and if you are going to have your spec read "flamed maple top" please use wood that has more than two lines of figure and basically looks like a plain top (seems I see this a lot). As a company who came to fruition building violins, cellos, etc...figured maple shouldn't be prohibitively rare or expensive. Kudos to the 8lb spec, that same spec costs thousands for a comparitive Gibson. Also kudos for the aged varnish which looks and likely sounds better than any Murphy aged lacquer, which again, costs multiple thousands at Gibson. In fact, it amazes me that $6 - 7K or more Les Pauls somehow continue to fly off the shelfs? Who is buying these guitars? I guess as long as that is happening, why change lol?
I can get a Les Paul standard 2500, Eastman is 2000, I’ll take the standard doesn’t need to be a R9 , the regular ones are just as nice? Better resale with the Gibson, and it’s American made!
@@joemasse4568 Yeah, that's the standard argument. All I know is that I bought a T59/V after trying all the ES-335s and ES-339s in each of the 3 Guitar Centers within driving distance and all the Gibsons were inferior to the Eastman in every way except the name on the headstock, and that includes the more expensive 335s (over $4.5K) I buy guitars to play them, not to sell them, so maybe I'm an anomaly but I'm not fixated on the potential resale value. YMMV...
@@joemasse4568 I'm getting a GoldTop in a few days....under $1500 with S&H/tax. My T486 ran me $1100 and it bests a $3000 Heritage 535.
This is a Gibson Custom Shop LP, right?
Yessir!
Interessante gitaren en outfits.
We houden het graag boeiend.
im guessing the eastman is 1-2 lbs lighter than the gibson though...........
Which is a good or bad? ;)
@@thefellowshipofacoustics well i have both; A R9 custom shop and an Eastman goldtop w/p90's..... playing the eastman is way way more pleasurable because of its weight and balance
@@thefellowshipofacoustics Definitely good for comfort and balance. Any Les Paul over 8.5lbs tends to be body heavy and unbalanced, the headstock end want to lift and he guitar slide away from you. 8lbs is spot on for a Les Paul style and Eastman are right around that weight.
The Seymour Duncan’s that the Eastman come with are so sterile and boring, I put a set of montys paf in the day I bought it and now it’s my main guitar.
Gibson quality is crap. That’s the only problem. Keep talking about for the price. Take the price out. Eastman is still a much better made guitar.
You should stick to cooking and housework.
@@leedemkiw6085 Well jeez Lee, you know you shouldn't be commenting on UA-cam video's when you're hungry.
Not Gibson or Eastman but a Maybach Lester is the best LP
Maybach would certainly provide a challenge for these two as well ;)
I prefer the Gibson sounds just a bit better.
Gibson is so overrated for the money.
Depends on what you're looking for!
Shit comparison, settings on amps are not the same.
Sorry we couldn't please you John.
