Hi everyone... sorry for not replying but I didn't notice the questions until now. 1. I use 23.5ct gold. The burnishing takes a lot of skill. If you try to burnish too early or too late after the gold is applied to the bole it is a disaster and the stone will scrape off the gold rather than polishing it.
The water solution is 2/3 vodka and 1/3 water, and I sometimes add a tiny bit of diluted gelatine.
    Hope this helps! Ian

Thank you so much for your video! I have posted it on the Society of Gilders Facebook page as our video-of-the-week. Best, Elizabeth.

The problem is nothing to do with the carat of the gold but about the adhesion of the gold, and the length of time left to dry. If you leave it too long then the bole underneath becomes hard and so the burnishes scratches the gold very easily. When the bole is soft it is not a problem.

Hi. The yellow base is a mixture of clay and animal hide glue, and the solution which is a mixture of water and a little alcohol and a touch of the same animal hide glue, attracts the gold to the surface while at the same time re-activating the glue. Hope this answers your question. :)

When your forehead is too dry, you can rub a little Vaseline onto the back of your hand and use this...

I don't understand how the gold is getting like a mirror. We made a good armenian bole with leaf gold on it. But after polishing it isn't so shining as yours. And: I still see the corners of the leafgold pieces. What do we do wrong?

Mastering gilding takes a lot of practice! A lot of things contribute, how flat you can transport your gold to the surface, the quantity of glue in your bole, the temperature of your studio etc. So, its tough to advise you I am afraid! But persevere!

can someone explain the difference between a gilded gold icon and a gold polished icon? thanks.

Aux Templar a gilded icon refers to any sort of gilding, that is gold applied to the icon whatever the method. Polished gold can only be done with the water gilding technique.
