Our Lady Who Brings Down Walls - The Story of An Icon
Переглядів 1 тис.Рік тому
In the midst of the terror and violence that has engulfed Gaza and Israel, in the Holy Land there is an icon painted on the Israeli separation wall between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. This has become a place of pilgrimage over the past decade for people who seek to pray for a true and enduring peace for all the peoples who live there. This is an introduction to the story of that icon.

Egg tempera icon painting: Starting to paint the garments
Thank you so much for sharing the video it's very interesting. How many gold leaves did he use in all? In the end when you put the gold in the shell, when it's dry you can use it by adding a drop of water right?
Hi. I don't remember how much we used but maybe 5 leaves. And yes, reactivate with a drop of water or just a damp brush.
@TheBethlehemIconSchoolOnline thank you 🤗
Have they never heard of a spatula in Russia? How about buying gold dust instead of making it in this wasteful manner with a finger. Pretty ridiculous. There are faster modern ways of doing this and no need to resort to ancient methods and ruining embroidered handkerchiefs in the process. You buy leaf gold for use in leafing. You buy powdered gold for use in painting. Why change leaf gold into powdered gold? Also, what she said about not reaching out to grab that sideways piece is baloney. In the end, it mixed with the water and was wasted. If she had grabbed it, it would have been mashed up with the rest. Or use a spatula? Too much magical thinking here.
Amazing process
Thank you 🎉😊What brand of gold leaf and guar gum was used?😊
I'm gold shell artist same work hard work
How do you store this?

I see a lot of character in the Saint's face as well as the individual mark of the iconographer. I really appreciate that she does not have that greenish ochre background skin color that some others use. She looks much more alive and immediate without it in her face.
I once tried tried mixing in a lot of gold scraps into lacquer and painting with it. There was a slight gleam, but it was very dilute and crude compared to this beautiful shell gold!
I was not able hear you all talking due to the two men talking over the top of you from the radio my hearing aids just could not seperate your voices from theirs so it just became annoying in the end
Is the gum Arabic water-based?
Yes
I would like to see the process from the beginning

I’m sorry my English is not good enough to understand the conversation. If somebody could give me a summary of this interview, I’d be very grateful. One thing that I could catchup is there are numbers of smart brain among Palestinian but nobody truly care for the future of their people/population. The present authorities (people with power) will be getting old soon and will die one day. They bring up their next generation with false teachings, how can their children live in peace. Gazan/civilians are a good example for the case. They are born to be forever refugees, who cares!?!? Their leaders are corrupt and use their people as a source of income. 😢
Amazing, Thank you for sharing this process. very much appreciated.
You are very welcome
When to start polishing gold with agate? how long after applying the gold?
Thank you so much Ian, very thoughtful and thorough x
So moving Ian. Praying for peace for all. xx
Thank you so very much for your thoughts on the situation in Palestine and Israel. I am not an academic or someone with any voice or experience to speak out to a wide audience, but it has been so good to hear all the threads brought together, so articulately. We are pounded with news from every side and I sit here screaming at the screen/radio, "what about this" or "don't forget that", and weep for the lack of vision amongst those who do have power to change things. I try to pray constantly, and share with those around me, but you have provided some hope that the voice of truth will be heard. God Bless you.
Thank you so much for the appreciative comments. I just hope it helps bring some clarity among all that screaming and pain. God keep you.
I remember seeing it when I was in the Holy Land in 2017. I had no idea it was painted by you. God bless you, Ian. May he give us peace.
Thank you
Thank you for sharing! Can the shell gold be used over oil paints? What paint mediums can this shell gold be used with?
It's not designed to be mixed with other mediums but it can be used for a whole range of uses alongside other media such as calligraphy, illuminations and not just in icons...
Thank you so much for passing on this knowledge, I have been looking for a suitable goldpaint for the parts that are too small to do by gold leafing. I even bought the premade pill shellgold but was very disappointed with the quality. I followed your steps but did add a few drops of distilled water (maybe a little early) while swirling because it was getting too dry to move around. Maybe the problem was that I was using 12 sheets of Rosenobel Double gold so the ratio of gummy and gold leaf might have been off because I also noticed that it was rubbing off a bit to easily while burnishing. So I dissolved the dry paint again in some distilled water and put a few more drops of gum arabic in. That seemed to do the trick. Very happy with what I ended up with so thanks a lot and best wishes from the Netherlands!
Thank you. I'm delighted that it worked out and the tip about adding a little gum arabic if its not sticking well is well worth noting!
I am trying this process, but my gold remains a dark ochre color, and hasn't brightened back to a golden sheen. What am I doing wrong? I am working with loose leaf 24k gold. Thank you!
I think you are not rubbing it with your finger long enough.
Peccato non so l inglese manca la possibilità automatica della traduzione , Grazie comunque
Благодарю Вас за видео !
Gold leafs are verry strong. You must trapping. You "break" the leaves into pieces. How Longer you tap how better. When you see the "Paint" under the microscope you can controle the Quality and fitness.
Did she used loose leaf or a transfer leaf?
I really appreciate this video. I've started making special mirror frames. Hand carved on wood and accepting with gold. This video helped greatly
Having rubbed a few shells in my day, the ROUGH texture on the inside of the shell would help with the griding. A smooth porcelain plate would probably be TOO smooth.
Hi. Do you teach how to tone down the gold to a nice warm honey colour?
How long after applying the bole on the gesso should one wait before embossing it?
What is the music playing?
What kind of gold leaf is that
23.5ct
Did you paintng anything on the white icon area to protect the excess leaf during gilding?
Could the embossing be done on the gesso prior to application of bole or is it better on the bole?
If its on the gesso it would be inscribed. You can only emboss into the bole as it is soft clay

What an awful thing to say to someone who is trying to provide some very hard to come by information.
I bet you don't even know what a woman is.
This video is very useful and I get the gist of it, but are the instructions written down anywhere: exact amount of gum arabic, number of gold leaf sheets, amount of water, what brands to use, a list of the steps, etc?
Hello sir, What is mixed in red clay? rabbit skin glue or gelatin?
Fascinating! Thank you!
Did she added mineral water or normal water?
Normal
@@ijak62 very interesting, useful for recovering all the gold that is lost in the process of gilding. thank you very much for the video
Thank you so much for sharing a lost art. I have no teachers where I live and I would love to pass the skills down that I have been researching all these years
Thank you. Do take a look at my other channel The Bethlehem Icon School Online for more free materials, and also check my website, www.eliasicons.co.uk where you can find details of the online long term formation in iconography that I run. Bless you!
An ineresting thing that in the middle of this video you can hear the Russian speach: two men are talkig about making of the shell gold, according to what they said only 1 of 20 persons can make the proper gold. It depends on the skin and it's oils and liquids. If I understand correct previously there was a special person who made shell gold. And also the voice has been noticed, that he can't make the proper gold - his one is too crumbly.
Thanks for the observation... Olga was Russian and she used a recording of her teaching from Russia... I never did know quite what he was saying!
@@TheBethlehemIconSchoolOnline thank you so much for such a detailed video! And many thanks to Olga, her teachers and this knowledge
Thank you so much!
Hi! I would like to know if you can use a glass muller rather than one’s finger so the oils from the skin don’t go into your shell gold ?
Well, I havent heard of either a muller being used or skin oils being a problem...
A glass muller is a glass tool that is used to mix watercolour pigments and liquid gum arabic to make paints. I am curious if that tool would work or has been worked with this method. I think using a tool like a muller would or could reduce fingers from cramping.
@@kdlettering8711 KD I know what a muller is, I meant I haven't heard of it being used for this. Thinking about it, you need a more gentle touch than a muller... you don't grind you tap, and gradually break up the gold into tiny tiny pieces. If you notice the finger uses a tapping motion and only a round pressing motion later on.
@KD Lettering, probably it would be useful for you: I've just found out from one icon writer (he's Russian, as Olga from this video) that the skin oils from your finger is one of the ingredients of the shell gold. That's why professionals don't like to buy it in the shops - the mechanical way to produce shell gold isn't correct. And also there is the Russian speach in the middle of this video: they say not everyone can do the proper shell gold because of different skin, so prevously it was a special master who prepare it. So don't think you made any mistake, if the qualities of your gold won't be perfect, but also do not be afraid of the skin oils. All the best to your practice!
Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful reply. That makes sense. I thought the oils would be an issue so that’s interesting that it actually aids in this process.
