My dad accidentally did this. We were up at a cabin in the middle of winter and he picked up a water bottle sitting out and it froze instantly. Coolest thing ever.
It's the same thing that happens to outdoors drinks fridges in summer. Because cold air rushes out of the fridge when you open the door, you have to keep it at a low temperature. But then what happens is if people don't open the door frequently enough, the drinks get supercooled and turns to ice when you pop the cork. :) It was very frequent in Norwegian summer in the 1980s. :)

Basically the water falls below freezing but since the inside walls of the bottle has no impurities and/or scratches or ridges for ice crystals to form it stays liquid. Only when the bottle is shaken ice can be formed from the liquid hitting the lid edges in the bottle.
That makes no sense, your saying that because theres no way for ice crystals to grow that it wont freeze until disturbed?

I had kept glass bottles filled with water, chilling in the door of my fridge (QLD AU) - then one humid morning I was closing the fridge, and as the door closed I heard the bottle fall forward and (rather mildly) knock the lower shelf opposite where it sat in the door. Well. I opened the fridge again .. and the water had done this 'instant' freeze' thing, creating a hollow vacuum in the centre of the ice, and the bottle itself (no lid on btw) CRACKED into multiple pieces that then slid down/around the outside of the ice. Lots of folks around here keep glass water bottles in the fridge .. not nearly freezing temps you'd think , but some anomally similar to this vid clearly occurred...
That Feeling when it has finally been explained how works on a more fundamental level, good to know that you need heat before freezing occurs.

Read Gerald Pollack's book "The Fourth Phase of Water". It describes the science behind the transition.
@@randythemitoman thanks! But remember, many of us are teachers / parents (I'm a speech language pathologist). I do a different experiment every week, and can't buy a book for each. It would be so amazing if you could briefly describe (or include a few printed sentences) the science behind it.
You use the internet, and you're a self-professed teacher. This is a gateway of nearly infinite knowledge, but it will punish those whom have no comprehension of how to navigate it. I'd sincerely hope that a teacher of all people would take the time to utilize the tools available to them in such a way as to make it their bitch, so to speak. But then again I think its just another symptom of our current diseased minds, laziness.

I did this earlier and it made it a slushie instantly. I had it in there for about 2 hours and 15 minutes and I took and out and put it on the counter and walked back to shut the freezer and when I turned around I saw it was freezing. I was confused because it looked frozen but the bottle was squishy then I realized it was a slushie

I literally went to grab a water out of the freezer and I picked it up and it turned into ice. I was so amazed at how it accidentally happened.
I did this accidentally today ! I was checking if the ice cubes were frozen yet but they were still water. Then I put some ice on my finger and touched them and they instantly froze . I was like 👁👄👁

It could, obviously, but at a certain point the kinetic energy put out by the sudden freezing is pushing against gravity, which may be more formidable than the glass walls that some retards are bound to warm with the hands immediately after dropping ice cold water into them. So I'm guessing the science behind hitting the bottle is pressure. More pressure will make the already slow water molecules get packed closer and thus freezing it. However what intrigues me is why it starts at the top rather than the point of impact...

I think it's also because ice is less dense than water, which usually attributes to ice floating on water instead of sinking. Therefore, it goes to the top and freezes downward.

All_in_One From my understanding the water is already below 0 degrees Celsius, but it needs energy to arrange its molecules into ice, so that energy needed is provided by the hit. And fun fact I discovered this myself one day by leaving a water bottle in the freezer, and I took it out and started drinking it, and the water started to become ice, similar to the way it’s shown in the video when the water is poured down in the glass.

That's much more than cold enough. I would guess maybe -5C is the goal, but that's only a guess. You can improve the result if you distill the water first, because that removes the minerals that assist in the formation of crystals, making it more difficult for water to freeze and allowing you more freedom to make the freezing happen at will.

Water freezes at below -0* Celsius, and if the water is without impurities, can stay liquid form below the freezing point, when you give it a jolt of energy, it will adapt to the surroundings temperatures and freeze

A really important step he forgot is that the bottle has to be purified. Normal tap water won't work, use purified water.

The fridge and freezer had to be set on fire, which was crazy to me as a Norwegian and then when I put a bottle of soda in the freezer, when I took it out and unscrewed the cork, it instantly turned into ice. I thought the Spaniards were totally crazy for a long time.

This actually happened to one of my water bottles in my fridge and I got so shook
Happened to me on a vacation in Spain. We had rented an apartment and it had a gas-fueled fridge and freezer, which was totally foreign to me as a Norwegian. When I lit the thing, it blew my lighter straight out of my hand and across the room. Later I went to buy a 1.5L soda, and it wasn't cold so I put it in the freezer to chill it fast. Once I opened the cork, the whole thing turned to ice. It really shaped my views on Spain for a while. These people are nuts! :)
