I've had a Sega Genesis and SNES for 20+ years, and that "blast processing" hype couldn't hide the fact that SNES had most of the best 16-bit games. Sega did have a few classics, though.
It was a good decision to stop making consoles and focus on making games for other systems as well as making some damn good arcade games. SEGA went wrong by making too many addons for the MegaDrive and eventually when they did make a system that could stand on its own legs (DreamCast), it was far too late because they had a bad reputation and had to compete with the PS2. I hope someday SEGA comes back to the home console market because they had an identity that is in sharp contrast to Nintendo. Even though Microsoft and Sony has taken over much of the ground that SEGA occupied in the 90s, those two brands still do not have the same edge.

The Sega Genesis was the most durable gaming system invented by man in my opinion. My friends and I put our friend's Sega through the ringer every weekend for years and it worked every time! We couldn't say the same for the Super Nintendo.

I played a Genesis from 1991 to 1994. Playing MK 1,2 and Sonic 2 were a blast to play. Just picked up a Genesis model 1 from a garage sale. Went out and bought a 3 in 1 power supply. The system works like a champ. Already own 13 games for the system. Amazing how these old systems still work today. The games are still fun to play.Only thing most Genesis games lack are save states.

@Sypran You're right, I've heard about some of those techniques as well. Most SNES games had a color count of about 90-120 on screen (although it could technically display 256). The Genesis was restricted to 64 at first, but I imagine developers managed to get it pretty close to SNES levels. I guess the real difference then lies in the color palettes, 512 for the Genesis vs 32000+ for the SNES.
The "Mega Drive" ad was actually an Aussie/Kiwi one. Sega was pronounced SEE-GA in Australia and New Zealand, where everywhere else it was SAY-GA. I'm Australian and I've always pronounced it SEE-GA. I miss the Mega Drive/Genesis vs SNES days. I loved both systems, but the Mega CD/Sega CD and 32X were both dogs, even though they had some good games. Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix come to mind.

At the time as a kid, Sega was very much like a Rated R movie that you needed to see but couldn't. It had a rep built solely on their hype, and their games played very differently than the NES (1 extra button!). But I'm glad I chose the NES.
The reason for the 32X is because of the prices that games that used co-processing chips were outrageous. Most of us dont remember that now but games like Starfox and Stunt Racer FX cost about 100$ or something. So sega thought they would make a co processing unit and then they could sell the carts for super cheap. Sure it still doesn't make it the best idea in the world but it made sense atleast you didn't have to pay an insane amount of money for some genesis games with a few 3D polygons

As I understand it, the SNES was originally going to have an even faster processor than the Genesis, but Nintendo decided to go with a slower one in order to cut down production costs. In the end, it was probably the best move for us gamers, as the Genesis's speed advantage gave it a unique edge against the SNES, resulting in great games for both consoles.

When Virtua Racing for the Genesis was in development the team making it was pushing to have the co-prossesor in that cart as a piggiback cart. Kind of like the Sonic and Knuckles cart but it would have only the super FX equivelant chip in it. I wish they had of gon with that idea. It would have been cheaper and easyer.
Genesis was definitely the "cool kids" system when it first came out. That's the way I remember it. It didn't help that Nintendo forced a lot of the popular games at the time, like Mortal Kombat, to filter out blood. Genesis had all the raunchy and violent games that Nintendo was too uptight to allow as-is on their precious SNES.
It's only a codename. The final US/EU name for the console may be "Dreamcast Edge". In japan it may be "Cosmic Ring". Because SEGASammy does not want to reuse the Dreamcast trademark in Japan becaue it was such a sales flop there.

Actually, guilemaster147, the previous poster was right to a certain extent. According to G 4, the Xbox 360 was the top selling console for all 12 months of 2011. It sold 66,000,000 individual units compared to Nintendos 12,000,000. So Nintendo is certainly not at its best right now. However, with the introduction of the wii u, hopefully that will change

If I'm not mistaken the scaling/rotation is handled by separate hardware to the main possessor.

Imagine if in these days Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony would make advertises where they try to make other systems look bad, it'd be quite hilarious but there would be lawsuits up in the ass.
Sega still has it's followers (including me) and they know it. I think Sega is testing the gaming market all the time to see where they are failing and what they are good at, so if they decide to compete again, they'll be ready.
SNES and SEGA were the ps3 and xbox-360 of their day.

@mariopianofreak that was their advertising slogan, they were in competition with Nintendo, so they made claims saying they had the superior hardware/graphics by saying "Sega does what Nintendon't" just making two words into one lol
I think its's funny how Genesis ended up giving free games and stuff when SNES came out. They weren't giving anything for free when it was just against the TG16 lol.

so my friend did that because everyone in school made fun of him
and next day when he came,he was thinking that he will pwn them like from streets of rage but instead,he got a punch in the face and stomach :(
after that i came to defend him so they dont hurt him too much.
from that day i remember he started hating sega and he sticked to nintendo consoles and games

When Virtua Racing for the Genesis was in development the team making it was pushing to have the co-prossesor in that cart as a piggiback cart. Kind of like the Sonic and Knuckles cart but it would have only the super FX equivelant chip in it. I wish they had of gon with that idea. It would have been cheaper and easyer.

Genesis was definitely the "cool kids" system when it first came out. That's the way I remember it. It didn't help that Nintendo forced a lot of the popular games at the time, like Mortal Kombat, to filter out blood. Genesis had all the raunchy and violent games that Nintendo was too uptight to allow as-is on their precious SNES.

It's only a codename. The final US/EU name for the console may be "Dreamcast Edge". In japan it may be "Cosmic Ring". Because SEGASammy does not want to reuse the Dreamcast trademark in Japan becaue it was such a sales flop there.

+fhhh SNES was 16-bit too with better colors, music and 3d graphics, while Genesis had a faster processor.

+mrjacob0101 SNES had more instructions per clock cycle, so the speed advantage meant little or nothing.. it was like a 4 cylinder running at 4000 RPM vs a V6 running at 3000.

Actually, guilemaster147, the previous poster was right to a certain extent. According to G 4, the Xbox 360 was the top selling console for all 12 months of 2011. It sold 66,000,000 individual units compared to Nintendos 12,000,000. So Nintendo is certainly not at its best right now. However, with the introduction of the wii u, hopefully that will change
