      For example, while I have used points for top properties with nightly rates of $1500+, I have also used Hyatt points for economy redemptions. For example, I have booked Category 1 Hyatt properties with club room for only 7K a night at properties with nightly rates of $250 a night. I would recommend getting the Hyatt credit card as you are pretty much guaranteed to come ahead of the annual fee due to the free night and you can earn valuable Hyatt points. Then later if it makes sense after your own calculations, I would work on building your Chase Trifecta

      CSR + Hyatt is my go-to recommendation for economy stays.
      If you're over 5/24, Amex Hilton cards can be great too given the high multipliers.

    Thanks again for an informative video! I prefer to use points whenever the cash price would otherwise prevent me from staying at a particular hotel. Thanks to this video I sent two status match requests to Best Western using Hilton Honors Gold and IHG Platinum Elite statuses. I noticed many Best Westerns throughout Paris last Fall. Since we’re returning to Paris next Fall for another three weeks, I figured looking into their offerings is a good idea.

    I've been using typs for hotels mostly since citi dropped their delay/cancellation insurance. Between premier and rewards+ combo, i net 1.41 cpp in portal. Not the greatest value, but solid, since i signed up when premier was 50k a.f waived, then matched to 60k. Once in awhile i use csr portal, points, or cash rate, depends on price. Been averaging about 3 to 8k points per night. Thanks for the vid!

      @@AskSebby yeah, not much interest in biz/first. I figure since i can stay stocked with enough chase pts, that AA and typ have become burner points for me. You can book a lot of econ 1 ways with just 1 bonus. Once the year is up, assuming I've burned all of my typs (almost there lol), i think I'll pc to DC, to start the 24 month clock. The other option is to eat the fee 1 year, to open the prestige next year, but don't think its worth it

    I’m entirely comfortable paying for economy tickets for flights. Don’t really have interest in business/ first class. I like to redeem Chase points at at least 2 cents per point because of Hyatt and with Amex I’m happy as long as I’m beating 1.25 cents at the Schwab cash out rate.

    I would love to see a video on best way to redeem points for a family. I am looking to redeem my 60k point from Amex platinum. Personally i do not care as much for high end options and focus more on budget friendly deals. Also not sure if you know this, but Amex waives the platinum annual feel each year for active military. This was the main reason I got this card.

  • @carracer2002

    I aim to get around 2.5 ccp for Chase UR points which usually comes through Hyatt reservations. I also used lots of Mariott points when the top properties were only 60K a night and loaded up with a vacation full of St Regis properties. All in all, I don't think it matters what brand but instead to determine target valuation and make sure you are beating that every time. For stock lovers out there, the analogy is like how day traders try to beat mutual funds, points users try to beat the no AF 2% cash back credit cards.

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  4 роки тому

      I did the same for 60k Marriott bookings. That's why I did Bora Bora and Maldives last year; I'll HAPPILY lock in 60k now vs. 85k (technically 70k to 100k) later.

      I'd probably just use the IHG points to do 1-2 nights in Le Moana or Thalasso; resort hopping is ~$20 to ~$75 per person (depending on mode of transport / willingness to hang out in the main town).

    Hi! How do you determine your outsized value for economy stays using points? Do you compare how many points are required and factor in the average point valuation for that hotel chain and comparing that cost against only paying via cash spend?

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  4 роки тому

      It's on a hotel by hotel basis; if redemption >= 2 CPP, then outsized value.

    Well, I for one am very interested in your budget hotel stays. For example, if I'm on a long road trip, I will typically book a cheap room with points somewhere along the way. I will only be there long enough to grab a nap and shower before hitting the road again. So I'm looking for Value over a premium experience.

    I have a question, if I book a hotel through Hyatt's website, does it count as 5x points or just 2x for regular traveling, I compared the prices between the two and Chase is a little bit more expensive but it's a guaranteed 5x points. However, I'm leaning toward the Hyatt's website because it's cheaper. Does anyone know how many points do I gain if purchase a hotel through Hyatt's website?

      Hyatt points work well here. Otherwise Airbnb might be a good pick for a few days.

  • @szearc
    @szearc 4 роки тому +5

    Yeah, I think having kids changes things.
    Right now, because we have two kids, the best value for points is typically resort properties with amazing amenities, pools, beaches, activities... I will usually save all my hilton and marriot points for a 4+1free plus any free anniversary nights I have to get a full week or more resort vacation out of my points, and just use 4 nights worth in points... I would happily use my points at a Waldorf or other luxury resort because of the high value staying with 4 people in a single room if spending all our time on property anyway... I think once kids are older, this will change because we will be able to enjoy more adventurous trips and want to explore different cities and drive around etc. and probably staying at air bnb will make more sense, but while kids are still young, long drives and walks and transit with kids in tow are not my idea of a fun vacation... Rather just relax on a beach or by an amazing pool and eat good food...
    For shorter stays I will typically try and use (last year) the Venture One card for the 10x points multiplier, or pay cash and get 4th night free using the Citi Prestige...
    Travelling with kids, the expensive part is airfare since you are paying per person (whereas hotels you pay just one price for the night for the whole family so a nicer property with breakfast for 2 is much more worth it imho)... Amex and Citi points, gift certificates, and any airline miles accumulated with airlines are typically used to cover the airfare for 4 people so the goal is always to get the cheapest and most direct flight in economy... A seat upgrade for one person really doesnt add any value if you have a family, since we would much rather all sit together anyway... The nicer thing would be access to the lounge or a Priority Pass restaurant where the whole family can enjoy food and chill...
    For trips where we really won't be spending alot of time at the hotel, we typically will use the Venture or Citi prestige card... Or I booked once this year using the amex platinum using their portal when I found a decent room rate
    I actually booked with cash for Disney World, we would not be spending the majority of time at the hotel so that means getting a value property with convenient access to the parks and decent enough room... For us this meant staying at one of the Value Resorts at Disney World, which is kindof like a Disney themed motel, not bad but the hotel wasnt the point of that trip... But nice thing about the Value Resort at Disney World is that you have free transportation to all of the parks, and there are on property amenities if you do decide to relax a bit, like pool, parks and laundry and at ours, a little semi outdoor theater playing disney movies... Just paid for that using a new credit card I was working on a signup bonus for... Those value resorts at Disney are actually not that expensive ($100-$250 a night) which is not that different than staying at a regular hotel off property, so its worth it imho given the convenience of getting to the parks

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  4 роки тому

      Do you have the Chase Disney debit card? Any tangible value?

    • @szearc
      @szearc 4 роки тому

      Ask Sebby Hmm... I didn't consider that card... We bank with BofA, so don't have that...
      Looking at it now, seems okay since its not a credit card and won't waste a 5/24 slot - most interesting thing about that debit card seems to be the 10% discount for disney merchandise of $50 or more, and 10% off at select dining locations... But I'm not sure how useful that would be for us... I think when at Disney, since you are typically eating whereever you happen to be, or you are making reservations via the Disney app, usually the best bet is to book just the restaurants you are interested in, and "character dining" reservations in the mobile app... The app lets you search availability and plan your schedule along with your ride fast passes which let you skip lines on rides. I don't think I would use the Disney Debit for dining because I wouldn't want to figure out which dining places are 10% off and let that dictate schedule or plans... Dining at the park codes as "restaurant" usually, so I feel like its just easier to use the Amex Gold card for dining... I was actually working on a retention bonus on my Amex Business Gold card so that card got all my dining spend on that trip... 4x on dining plus the retention offer bonus...
      Interesting that there is a "Chase exclusive" character meetup... But for character meetups, I feel like the best option is always to just book a character dining experience. Kids get to meet characters without any kindof line or wait, and you anyway need to eat...

      Ask Sebby By the way, another interesting perk related to theme parks is the Amex Lounges at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Orlando... It's actually mind numbing that software developers at FANG companies make 300-500k/yr. Like I understand that they are likely somewhat more skilled than your average software engineer that makes lets say 150k in a MCOL area, but being paid 2 or 3 times as much? The cost of living is obviously absurd in silicon valley, but it all just smells of being a house of cards.

    Do you have to live in "the big city" like seattle, Bay area, LA or even areas of New York to be an internet nomad though?

      Nope. Tons of people -- if not most -- do Bali.
      The main keys tend to be: fast internet + runway given your burn + network of like-minded people.

      If I were to do the digital nomad thing, I would probably city hop every month in Asia (i.e., Tokyo, Kyoto, Seoul, Bali, Singapore, etc.)
      I generally prefer cities though.

    200k - 500k salary typical after 5+ years of tech experience in Silicon Valley. Do the majority of software engineers achieve this? Or are we talking about the top 10% skilled software engineers?

      All-in salary includes stock compensation which may be worthless at some startups.
      Most base salary is in the 100k to 200k range (YMMV): sf.curbed.com/2018/6/26/17505550/low-income-limit-2018-salary-san-francisco-families-hud
