The "gatekeepers" of music were very different, and much more powerful in the '70s than today. I suspect the music industry execs at the time didn't even remotely understand this one, so it got shoved aside. I'm loving seeing the resurgence, even if it's largely due to a big-budget movie.
My God, what a profound impact these 4 Englishmen had on my life and millions of others. I bought this record in 1976 with my wages from washing dishes at an upscale Danish, yep Danish Dining Club in Detroit. This labor also afforded me a chance to see the Night at Opera Tour - Great Seats at the Masonic Auditorium. I listen to this now - 46 years later and I have a sense of seeing & hearing some great art & music. God has been very good to me.
There isn't one member of Queen that could be replaced and it still be the same, I've know that for years,...and if you listen to all their music it's easy to see why. Everyone of them give QUEEN music what nobody else's music does. Individual styles and ideas but ALWAYS realize the sum of the band is greater than it's individual parts !!
agree and seconded. by way of agreement with John Deacon, as well, who retired and stopped performing when Freddie died. this isn't a diss at Adam Lambert or George Michael but Freddie Mercury they ain't.
Johan P I agree totally. I think you have to give George Michael a huge thumb up though, for his Somebody to Love cover at the Queen tribute concert which was phenomenal. Yes, I know he's not Freddie Mercury, but Brian and Roger said afterwards that they could think of no one else more suited to cover that song than George, citing that George is an incredible vocalist and gave the song so much respect. Not many people can do that to a Queen song, but on that night he seriously pulled it off. RIP Freddie, and George. Both titans of their respective followers, and in the industry.
This is what happens when you have GENUINE talent throughout the band! Has aby other band have a #1 from every single member of the group? Ringo wrote ongs, may have got to #1 singing, but Queen had all members write #1 songs! My favourite band of all time.
You are absolutley right. Each one of these men was a talent in his own right, but you put them together and the magic was just so evident. I dare anyone to say that they could not stand toe to toe with the greatest bands in history and not hold thier own.
+Cl4rendon Brilliant musicians each, but I think the most impressive thing is what they managed to create together. IMO, definitely more than the sum of its parts.
were so lucky they took a break when they did. other bands, the police for example, would have disbanded. queen just went apart for a while so they could join eachother again for some brilliant late albums
My favorite Queen song. And one of the saddest, most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Starting out so promisingly and ending so heartbreakingly. A masterpiece in three and a half minutes.
The song was made in 1975, and a similar theme movie "Interstellar" was released in 2014 *_"39"_* years after the song was made. *_This is A Kind of Magic_*
My brother who passed away. Showed me this song and queen was his favorite band. So that's how I fell in love with the number 39 it was even my first football jearsy number
Klay Brewer Awesome Klay. My eldest brother introduced me to Queen in the '70s. Sorry for your loss. This song must resonate deeply, painfully and Beautifully for you. Godbless. Emily Liberty
I listened to this looking at my fathers WWII medals. He died when I was 3. And it felt like he was speaking to me. He gave me this life. Like they all did. It's clear to me this is an homage to that generation. And a voice from them to us now. That's how I see it. Thanks Brian.
its actually a scy fi story kinda like interstellar, thats why he mentions he is older but a year, because time didn't pass the same in space but the people on earth grew older, thats why he is talking to the daughter not the mom. But yeah, music is what you make of it, and it can hold multiple meanings
such a beautiful poetic masterpiece. “your mothers eyes, from your eyes, cry to me”, “all your letters in the sand, cannot heal me like your hand”. incredible work.
This comment seriously made me cry, because I thought that to be received by Roger's beautiful voice when you go to heaven he has to die first AND go to heaven.. Anyways I pray a lot so they can go there and be happy forever
Are you outta your fuckin' MIND, man?! Leaving Home Ain't easy is one of the shittest thing's Doctor Timelord Sir Brian Maiden did this side of Starfleet Project, and Queen did this side of Hot Space, or Relax (Extended). ;)
As a young man in the late 1970s still in school and short of $$ I didn't have alot, big but, I did have an ancient phonograph with an 8 track player. I had 6 tapes total 2 queen, 2 areosmith, van halen and a richard pryor I had to keep hidden. I had sheer heart attack and a night at the opera. That limited selection was a soundtrack to my youth. Those tapes would play continually 24hrs a day, just KA GINGING between the 4 programs for non stop distraction from adolescence. They all self destructed from overplay and vanished but the music remained. I haven't heard those albums since then, just the ones that get radio play, etc. This last winter I had the song '39 play in all my dreams one night, each one waking me up at some point, and eventually the tune was playing in my head too loud for sleep. I went here and played this and other versions of the same all day, and continued to dream it all night only to wake up the next day the same way. And each night and day since the same, sometimes quiet, and farther off in the background. But not to the point of distraction or trouble, it is always a good thing if not a lifesaver, again as before in my youth. Here I am today. Yes, I hear your call, as I did many years ago. Yes, I hear you calling me. There is nothing I could say, but thank you Brian May, for this song, then and now, and here today.
Has anyone else noticed how this song is like the whole story of Intersteller in less than 4 mins. Apart from the similar story line 1. Part where "land is few" from song is similar to Intersteller where irrigable land is short. 2. Writing letters in the sand is similar to way they communicate via writing morse code on dirt. 3. The way they come back in around an year. But after 100 earth Years. 4. When Cooper from Intersteller comes back to his old Daughter is similar to "Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me." 5. End of movie when Cooper s Daughter dies and he continues is like "For my life Still ahead Pity Me." Any idea if Intersteller was inspired from '39
+Abhishek Jiwankar Also milky sea=milky way. I had the same thoughts when I first heard it back in the day. Long before Interstellar, at that time we did not know Brian May would become Brian May PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College London in 2007.
+jeeptrick1 While I didn't hear the song until about '81 (thanks to the "good" old Columbia Record Club), I realized right away what it was about. Yes; I was a total space nerd. :-) When I saw "Interstellar", I immediately saw the parallels... although it's almost impossible to avoid them, given, well, physics. I won't go so far as to say the movie was inspired by the song, but once you've put it on film it's only polite to recognize those who have gone this route before... and they may have, as commented above. But either way, it's still a great tune.
+jeeptrick1 I agree. Brian May is one smart dude :) Had it been anyone else Queen would have been all about Mercury. But Brian May is equally talented, if not more. He might not have reach like Mercury but there is a beautiful sweetness to his voice. Cant imagine songs like "I am love with my car" w/o him.
‘39 is Queen’s 39th song The planet that is .39 AU from the sun is MERCURY And 39 years after this song, Interstellar was made, like seriously that is insane
I really want to believe Nolan did that on purpose, like he had the idea for Interstellar 5 or so years before he made it but decided to hold off until 39 years after "'39".
@@fitriaah11 oh, I know. I meant it as generally at my high school all the intellectual jokers are also bullies. So, while I don't have anything against funny people, I don't favour them when looking at men because of how I've seen people with the same qualities behave quite cruelly. Hence why what you wrote originally above is more my type. Sorry if this offended anyone, I did not mean it to.
This song has become an unexpected jam in my life lately. Brian’s voice is like a beautiful melding of Dylan and McCartney but still uniquely perfect, with just a sprinkling of hopeful melancholy.
Brian once said that they tried to never simply repeat a chorus...they'd always change how it was orchestrated to keep things interesting. '39 is a perfect example of that. Lyrics are killer, as well.
Never realized this was a science fiction story! I always thought it was about British soldiers sailing across the Channel in 1939. Very interesting; hats of to Brian May!
+Jason Goatcher Science fiction stories about relativistic space ships and time dilation were already in the literature before the song was written, including Ursula K. LeGuin's stories featuring NAFAL (Nearly As Fast As Light) travel and Poul Anderson's Tau Zero. So the group might have gotten the inspiration from a novel or story. That does not subtract from Queen's brilliance in turning it into a poignant story of love lost that takes less than four minutes to tell.
This was,and still is,my favorite Queen song. There are so many to love, and I do,but this one is my favorite. The first time I heard this song,I was reading a book in which one of the main characters has traveled in space and his situation was just the same:if he were to return home, everyone he'd ever known would be long dead.Brian himself explained it,it's called 'time dilation'.Anyway,it's a heavy sort of idea to wrap your head around. When I heard this song my first thought was,he KNOWS!! HE KNOWS!(didn't know much about Queen, didn't know that Brian had studied astrophysics and would eventually go on to earn a PhD on the subject).Plus,it's basically a sci-fi folk song, love the melody and the way Brian sings it.
***** the same thing happened to me. along with Brian May's beautiful vocals, this song just totally astounds and captivates me everytime I listen to it.
So beautiful. This has to be one of the most beautiful, yet overlooked songs ever to come out of the 1970s. Thank you, Mr. May. An absolute masterpiece.
For those who don't know (I didn't realize this for a long time) this song is about a man who goes to space for a year, then comes back to Earth and many years have passed on Earth (you know, because of relativity and all that). I'm kind of an idiot and thought it was about olde timey immigrants in the 1830s. In any case, when you know that, the lyrics make a lot more sense, including one of my favorite lyrics of all time: "Your mother's eyes, through your eyes, cry to me."
@@beking1591 No, because they leave in '39 and return in '39. That's why he says "so many years have gone though I'm older but a year." 100 years passed on Earth but the Volunteers experienced time dilation, so only aged by one year. Also why he says "the land that our grandchildren knew." And they "sailed across the milky seas," or the Milky Way.
What you're forgetting is that Brian May is an astrophysicist. He gave up his dissertation to be Queen. It was only after Freddie died that he got his PhD.
I was familiar with Queen's big hits. This is the first time I've heard this song and I'm standing here, mind blown away... I think I've fallen in love with 4 men simultaneously, and this time, folks, it's for real!
So it's a band with three lead quality vocalists, outstanding musicians, one of them an astrophysicist songwriter who breaks down the very complicated theory of time dilation in an understandable way, sets it to a beautiful tune, and sings it like a champ. You just can't do much better.
I just looked up the meaning of the lyrics and DAMN it’s sad. And it makes perfect sense with the lyrics. So basically, the volunteers are astronauts that fly away from the earth at near light speed. Eventually, they come back with good news: they found another life-bearing planet! To their dismay, however, even though they only aged a year, because of time dilation, the earth and everyone on it aged over a century. Humanity is probably dead by then, and even if it isn’t, everyone the volunteers have ever known and loved died a long time ago.
This song is perfect in every way, its melody in harmony with the lyrics makes me feel an extraordinary sensation, Queen's songs are so perfectly delicate.
In 2039, I would be 40 then. (In my country, Korea.) I'm now just turning in to my 20s. I can't believe I'll be 40 one day. Now I'm crazy about Queen. How about you, older me? Let's meet again myself in the '39. Love you❣
MrJest2 wonder why roger never written song about biology...ohh he did.. (i am in love with my car and one vision) and why deacy did not write any song about technology
I think Brian May deserves an honorary Nobel prize for writing a romantic ballad based on the dangers of relativistic time dilation on relationships, the perfect blending of art and science!
That effect on the vocals here, is called "Flanging", it can be applied to any instrument or vocals. Rumor has it, that one of the Beatles, accidentally touched a Tape Flang (edge of a tape reel) during one of their playback sessions, and caused that effect to be created. A very cool sound effect.!!!
This song never fails to leave me in a puddle of tears. As a Queen superfan, Im pretty sure this is my all-time favourite song out of their entire catalogue. 😭🖤
I fact checked it by finding a audio of only his vocals and putting a speaker with his vocals on play near a glass flower vase and yeah.... You're right.

It was always familiar as a regular on my playlists over the years, but when my wife asked me who it was I told her "The Waterboys" because it has an almost-Irish Folk Song sound like "Fisherman's Blues". She said it reminded her of Queen; I laughed at her!
This is such a sad song set to an upbeat tune. Imagine thinking you've only been gone for a year and finding out it's been a century and everyone you have ever known is gone.
Brian May could have easily been the frontman of his own band. As a singer, guitarist and song writer he was phenomenal. And when you take into account his intellect on top of that you have to stand in awe.
He even has a signature look (those curls! Those clogs! And frankly he had awesome stage outfits which really flattered his stick-thin figure) which is arguably essential for a frontman to have.
So after the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, I became obsessed with Queen once again. I bought tickets to their tour in 2019 as soon as they were available. I took my boyfriend to see them (his first concert) at The Forum in LA on 7/19/19. Now I’m a Queen fan, but I really only know their “hits.” At one point during the concert, Brian sang Love of My Life. I knew it was coming. I knew what I’d be seeing. I made sure to take tissues. This comment is on every non-single Queen song
+Karol Bała That's because it's true of all non single Queen songs.
It should've gotten radio time during 1975 and it would've be a major hit in both the UK and the US.
The "gatekeepers" of music were very different, and much more powerful in the '70s than today. I suspect the music industry execs at the time didn't even remotely understand this one, so it got shoved aside. I'm loving seeing the resurgence, even if it's largely due to a big-budget movie.
This song is exactly 39 years old today.

Ken Brome I totally agree
You are absolutley right. Each one of these men was a talent in his own right, but you put them together and the magic was just so evident. I dare anyone to say that they could not stand toe to toe with the greatest bands in history and not hold thier own.
This band was a great vehicle for 4 different solo talents.
+Cl4rendon It couldn't have been said better! :)
+Cl4rendon Brilliant musicians each, but I think the most impressive thing is what they managed to create together. IMO, definitely more than the sum of its parts.

@@soundgardener4940 Wtf does your comment even mean?

Apart from the similar story line
1. Part where "land is few" from song is similar to Intersteller where irrigable land is short.
2. Writing letters in the sand is similar to way they communicate via writing morse code on dirt.
3. The way they come back in around an year. But after 100 earth Years.
4. When Cooper from Intersteller comes back to his old Daughter is similar to "Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me."
5. End of movie when Cooper s Daughter dies and he continues is like "For my life
Still ahead
Pity Me."
Any idea if Intersteller was inspired from '39
+Abhishek Jiwankar LOL, probably the movie was partially based on the song?
+Abhishek Jiwankar Also milky sea=milky way. I had the same thoughts when I first heard it back in the day. Long before Interstellar, at that time we did not know Brian May would become Brian May PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College London in 2007.
+jeeptrick1 While I didn't hear the song until about '81 (thanks to the "good" old Columbia Record Club), I realized right away what it was about. Yes; I was a total space nerd. :-)
When I saw "Interstellar", I immediately saw the parallels... although it's almost impossible to avoid them, given, well, physics. I won't go so far as to say the movie was inspired by the song, but once you've put it on film it's only polite to recognize those who have gone this route before... and they may have, as commented above.
But either way, it's still a great tune.
+Jason Goatcher Haha sorry for that... But still see the movie. Its worth the watch.

Never realized this was a science fiction story! I always thought it was about British soldiers sailing across the Channel in 1939. Very interesting; hats of to Brian May!
it is actuly about 20 people going to space to find a new planet to live on,because earth is dieing
+Heritage367 I never realised it either!
+Goldman Boys Rule It's about time dilation.
Heritage367 um no one sails in 100 years with the same personnel

In any case, when you know that, the lyrics make a lot more sense, including one of my favorite lyrics of all time: "Your mother's eyes, through your eyes, cry to me."
wkevinc no this song its for the second world war
@@beking1591 No its for the 39th world war
@@beking1591 No, because they leave in '39 and return in '39. That's why he says "so many years have gone though I'm older but a year." 100 years passed on Earth but the Volunteers experienced time dilation, so only aged by one year. Also why he says "the land that our grandchildren knew." And they "sailed across the milky seas," or the Milky Way.
What you're forgetting is that Brian May is an astrophysicist. He gave up his dissertation to be Queen. It was only after Freddie died that he got his PhD.
Just take a moment and appreciate Roger's falsetto. How is it even possible?
I was familiar with Queen's big hits. This is the first time I've heard this song and I'm standing here, mind blown away... I think I've fallen in love with 4 men simultaneously, and this time, folks, it's for real!
So it's a band with three lead quality vocalists, outstanding musicians, one of them an astrophysicist songwriter who breaks down the very complicated theory of time dilation in an understandable way, sets it to a beautiful tune, and sings it like a champ. You just can't do much better.
Well reasoned and well put
Yep and meanwhile he is a Booster Junkie with no Brain or what do you May
I just looked up the meaning of the lyrics and DAMN it’s sad.
I don’t think humanity is dead, but you’re right, when they come back everybody they new died of old age or is elderly at this point
But surely they knew this would happen? Surely they would have been prepared?
