Look at the angle of the ear pieces. They should insert into your ears so the tip points towards your nose. The ear pieces should also fit snuggly into your ear canal, which helps to cut out any ambient noise. Some low quality stethoscopes (often found in nursing skills labs) don't have much of an angle so they don't fit well. It may be worth going to a store and try different stethoscopes to see what fits you best.
Heart and breath sounds and what we are actually auscultating for would be helpful. Nursing school never really covered it.
