    One of the coolest alternate guitar tunings is DADGAD. When strummed open, it's the sound of a Dsus4 chord, and it has a wonderfully Celtic feel. Easy hand positions let you weave a magical spell, even for players with limited experience.
    Playing in "real" DADGAD requires tuning down the low E, B and high E strings. But thanks to a cool D'Addario NS Artist Capo, you can now get the DADGAD feel instantly, just by putting this ingenious partial capo across the 3rd, 4th and 5th strings at the 2nd fret.
    Without retuning, you get the sound of DADGAD, but raised up one whole step to Esus4, making it even more versatile. Come to Honolulu with Robert Cassard and check it out!

    I'm catching up on some of your videos over Thanksgiving weekend. It was kind of cool to see you having a relaxing trip to Hawaii with your Martin travel guitar. I enjoyed this video quite a bit because it reminding me of some ideas I used to explore but for reason stopped. I have this capo, but now I am going to drag it out for some pleasant relaxing music.
    Thanks, John

      Got to admit it’s handy. I love alternate tunings, but the partial capo gives it a new twist!

    I tune it down a whole step and then use the partial capo. That way you´ve have a "original DAGDGAD", but yoy have the flexibility to play as usual EADGBE with standard capo on 2nd fret

    • @RobertCassard

      Absolutely, Hakan. I would do the same with a larger body guitar, but with my short-scale Martin, I have to keep it up at E or the strings start flapping!

      I would just tune down an entire step and than use a 3 string capo and a 6 string capo above it so I can keep easily transposing or changing it however I want to quickly, at least for coming up with ideas, DAGDAD may not always correspond with a certain key or someones vocal octave with certain chord shapes.

    I e been using this capo for many years now. You can use it with a regular capo and as long as it is 2 frets down every time you get the same sounds in different keys. The only thing is , you need medium to heavy gauge strings or you get quite a bit of bend on the strings causing intonation

    • @RobertCassard
      @RobertCassard  9 місяців тому

      Love it, Jamie. Someday, I'll have to do a double-capo video. Fact is, DADGAD relative tuning sounds great at higher pitches, i.e,., farther up the neck. Kinda magical, right?

      It uses medium gauge strings which helps compensate for the small body size. I actually love how it records, and I keep being impressed whenever I do a travel video. Here’s the most recent: ua-cam.com/video/k6cgzYGL4ag/v-deo.html

      I’m such a lifelong music lover, I can never just choose one or two musicians! I love everything from singer/songwriters to progressive rock, to Jazz, to classic rock to classical and beyond. When it comes to open tunings, I especially love Michael Hedges, David Crosby and Joni Mitchell.

    Is this better than the Kyser? I am currently shopping for a partial/cut-capo and the Kyser's foot-pad is not long enough for my Taylor. I am now thinking about either the G7th or this one? Any input is appreciated.

    • @RobertCassard
      @RobertCassard  2 роки тому +1

      My G7 and D'Addario capos both have a longer footpad that the Kyser. Either should work better with your Taylor. Good luck, Michael!

    This type of capo is for what type of music?, i am new with capos.

    • @RobertCassard
      @RobertCassard  5 місяців тому

      A partial capo, like this one, is used to press down ("fret") one or more strings anyhere above the nut. In this case, it frets the 3rd, 4th and 5th string wherever you place it. This is a "specialty" capo, and it's used by players who want to play in alternate (non-standard) tunings.
      Standard capos fret ALL SIX strings. They are used to change the key the guitar is playing while allowing the guitarist to play familiar hand positions.
      For example, a C chord without a capo is simply a C chord. Place a capo at the first fret and the key of the guitar moves up one half-step. So playing the C hand position now sounds a C# chord. Move the capo to the 2nd fret. Playing the C hand position now sounds a D chord.
      I've done quite a few videos about capos on my channel. Just search under the word "capo." Here's a good one with a lot of basic information:

    While this does sound fun. Your fingering will be different than if you were actually tuned to DADGAD. Your finger will actually be the same as it would be for standard tuning. This does remove some of the benefits you would get in actual DADGAD.

    • @RobertCassard
      @RobertCassard  Рік тому

      Not so, C. The capo reaches most of the way across the neck at the 2nd fret, despite only pressing the 3rd, 4th and 5th strings. This makes the second fret a new "nut." So all the fingerings for DADGAD remain the same, just up 2 frets (and up a whole step musically). Think of it as "raised DADGAD," because the tuning is actually EBEABE.

    Is it possible to play minors in DADGAD?

    • @RobertCassard
      @RobertCassard  4 місяці тому

      Absolutely. All the notes are still there on the fingerboard. They're just located in different places. Here's a video where I use the same capo to play a Bob Dylan gem with major and minor chords: ua-cam.com/video/k6cgzYGL4ag/v-deo.htmlsi=_LjJO8cbm-blsygk

  • @radmed979
    @radmed979 2 роки тому

    It's not dadgad then, just a mimic still sounds cool though. Great info though, ty

    • @RobertCassard
      @RobertCassard  2 роки тому

      Correct, Josh. It mimics the sound of DADGAD, up a whole step. It's actually EBEABE. You're not playing in true DADGAD unless you tune the guitar down a whole step and then use the capo. (Interesting that D'Addario actually labels it a "DADGAD Capo.")

  • @BryanClark-gk6ie
    @BryanClark-gk6ie 14 днів тому +1

    If you position the capo right behind the fret instead of middle ways in-between frets you shouldn't have to retune your guitar.

    • @RobertCassard
      @RobertCassard  14 днів тому

      I appreciate the tip, Bryan. Sometimes that technique works for me on certain guitars, sometimes not. One challenge of that placement is that it crowds some of my hand positions.
