I love the pull up part, he goes for 10, gives up and just does 5, gives a shrug. This guy climbed a 3000 ft mountain with no protection, his ego is impervious.

I was so thinking that too. He free-solo'd El Capitan, so if he says he wants to do 5 pull-ups, he does 5 pull-ups and that's awesome. I think he was making the point that it's kind of silly and almost irrelevant how many pull-ups you can do because that doesn't determine your skill-level in rock climbing, necessarily. He's fascinating to listen to.

They do have their benefit for climbing, depending on how you do them. Pull-ups where you engage the scapular can absolutely help your power and they can be a great way to train lock-off strength.

The question about "how do climbers recover their gear when the finish climbing?", didn't really give me an answer that I could understand. When sport climbing or trad climbing, you take your own gear and and hook into the bolts (sport climbing), or attach your own safety devices (trad climbing). I understand that you can recover your rope easily, but how do you recover the safety devices, like the ones you hook to the bolts when sport climbing, or the ones you install in cracks and crevices when trad climbing? I'm not a climber, so excuse me if I didn't use the correct terms. This is a genuine question though, and any help understanding is much appreciated. Thanks in advance. ✌️

what alex said about "it is easy to focus when your life is on the line" really rings true. On a lesser scale if you watch skaters or freerunners when security are kicking them off they will often have just one last try to achieve the trick they are trying and you just see how often they actually pull it off when the pressure is down.
When you have only one chance people tend to achieve their goals.
