Never been a fan of sport in general, so the first time I watch this video I have completely no idea who he is and what is he talking about few days passed, I did some research, watch a lot of videos and the film and I'm blown away, rewatching the video now and I could finally appreciate and understand it Alex suddenly become one of my favorite people in the world, much respect
The "friend of his who lived out of the back of his Honda Civic" was Brad Gobright, who died in November last year (only three months after this video was made,) when falling over 1,000 feet while rappelling during a climb in Mexico. Sadly.
U are one exeptional person. What you do is some people’s worse nightmares. Being in a high place and not being able to move up or down. And such a great dude. Keep it up Alex.
Recovery on the route: try what's called gtox. Basically, you shake your arm but then when it gets filled with blood, the gravity works against you, so you can raise your arm above your head for a couple of seconds to help the used blood drain out. It's pretty visual too, look at the veins on your forearm
This man did five pull-ups not on a pull-up bar, but on artificial rocks. That's like going to your door frame and banging out five pull-ups with your fingertips.
It seems like climbing freesolo and facing your own mortality in such a profound and undeniable way has a real way of instilling a constant chill into someone. I can't imagine Alex Honnold, like, getting angry in traffic, for example. Although he does have the eyes of a golden retriever lol so maybe I'm projecting an assumption onto him without any real basis. But I literally can't imagine Alex Honnold displaying legitimate rage, like that. He always seems profoundly chill and super content compared to the average person.
what alex said about "it is easy to focus when your life is on the line" really rings true. On a lesser scale if you watch skaters or freerunners when security are kicking them off they will often have just one last try to achieve the trick they are trying and you just see how often they actually pull it off when the pressure is down. When you have only one chance people tend to achieve their goals.
Few better feelings than seeing/filming the homie finally landing a trick, at least if you don't skate well enough yourself lmao. I've always thought it was cool that once it's do or die we can kick it into high gear, even for something entirely recreational.
Come to think of it, Sammy Baca doing that noseslide shuv out in Baker 4 is a prime example of it. Video was almost out. So he had to actually land it, no baker makers.
If you love Alex and/or Free Solo as i did, read Alone On The Wall. It's a fascinating journey through his thoughts, and the way he thinks is so interesting.
I loved the book. Read it after watching Free Solo, and with that background I got the sense that he wrote it because somewhere inside he had accepted that he might not succeed, and wanted an explanation to exist...
Because in free solo he admits to having that big crazy dream but was always cagey about it before, it was never explicit. Absolutely legendary self awareness

I understand that you can recover your rope easily, but how do you recover the safety devices, like the ones you hook to the bolts when sport climbing, or the ones you install in cracks and crevices when trad climbing? I'm not a climber, so excuse me if I didn't use the correct terms. This is a genuine question though, and any help understanding is much appreciated. Thanks in advance. ✌️
Never been a fan of sport in general, so the first time I watch this video I have completely no idea who he is and what is he talking about
few days passed, I did some research, watch a lot of videos and the film and I'm blown away, rewatching the video now and I could finally appreciate and understand it
Alex suddenly become one of my favorite people in the world, much respect
There was great follow up TEDx talk where El Cap lectured an audience about overcoming the disappointment of defeat
"Not all rock climbers live in vans. Some live in trucks and cars" Lmao
Will you be at the 2020 games in Tokyo? Alex- “Ya”
Corona virus: ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT
My hero. He helped me overcome fear and anxiety.
The "friend of his who lived out of the back of his Honda Civic" was Brad Gobright, who died in November last year (only three months after this video was made,) when falling over 1,000 feet while rappelling during a climb in Mexico. Sadly.
Alex is so humble. He doesn't make fun of the stupid questions
He's a climber and if you rearrange his surname you get "Hold onn...."
Awesome guy friggin free soloed el cap, still cant believe it, oh my god, wtf
friggin epic bro
Dude. I say the same thing all the time. It's an incredible athletic feat. Glad other people are still as impressed as I am.
for frig sake
Oh god, oh frig!
@@XxPunxunite 100% agree
How to fall while bouldering: pause video at 6:42, zoom in to the right. Perfect example!
“I don’t think I’m on some other transcendental level.... I don’t think he gets it.”
That was beautiful.
U are one exeptional person. What you do is some people’s worse nightmares. Being in a high place and not being able to move up or down. And such a great dude. Keep it up Alex.
This man has the biggest and brightest eyes I've ever seen... Must be all the adrenaline
5:10 question you see in the thumbnail, you're welcome
tyvm
Jesus
He did not answer the right version of that question. Unsatisfied.
Thanks
BS answer. We want to know how it works outdoors when there is no peg to start with. Unpopular opinion: I don’t like this guy much.
Recovery on the route: try what's called gtox. Basically, you shake your arm but then when it gets filled with blood, the gravity works against you, so you can raise your arm above your head for a couple of seconds to help the used blood drain out.
It's pretty visual too, look at the veins on your forearm
Alexx Honnold is awesome: brave, strategic, insightful, strong; with an engaging personality. *@WIRED - thank you for producing this!!*
This man did five pull-ups not on a pull-up bar, but on artificial rocks. That's like going to your door frame and banging out five pull-ups with your fingertips.
Please, those rocks had way more room to grab on to than a doorframe. Just look at them.
Not that hard
I could do this, he is being modest lol he could do 30+
When he said he wasn't in his prime I just rolled my eyes.
He lives in a van down by the river!
GENZ you can’t park overnight by the Merced, though. 🤔
“Friend of mine lived out of a Honda Civic” RIP brad gobright
