Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee used to come to America to do Conventions together. When the demands of answering fan question were finished for the day, they would go off to play and I mean literally play. They start water pistol fights in a hotel lobby, have elevator races, if they were signing autographs for a passerby, they would often sign each others names on the wrong photographs. Have silly Doctor who like arguments with hotel staffers and try to drag passers by into their absurd arguments. IOW - Actors with a day off. :-b

The best part about the Doctor, is that he's kinda real.
Like most classic Doctors are just playing themselves. Something about that kinda unlocks some for of childish glee in me. It's adorable, really.

The saddest thing is that he wasn't able to take a bigger role in this story. It was actually fitting that this was his final professional acting appearance - in many ways I think it's what he would have wanted.

arcadian78 My favourites are Jon followed by Colin. Jon Pertwee is just awesomely cool whether he is considered (by Hartnell’s Doctor) a dandy or not. Colin also brought a no nonsense tougher edge to the character (probably in response to the awful costume he was forced to wear).

Hartnell's enthusiasm, professionalism and love for the show spawned a franchise that has given billions pleasure throughout the world and the ages. He has achieved immortality as his image and portrayal continues to be seen to this day..... not a bad achievement is it 😉

@@davekp6773 Agreed about Colin. I do think it was absolutely fitting that he was the incarnation to meet the Valeyard, something of a hard look into his future in a more metaphorical sense. Six was definitely the darkest up until that point, and I think being shown the absolute lowest level that the Doctor could reach was something of a wake-up moment for him as a character, diverting him away from that descent for a while at least.
I do think he solidifies the notion that there are no bad Doctors, just ones not as popular as others. Interference from the higher-ups and such at the BBC just came at a really inopportune time to look at darker angles of the show.

Originally, his doctor had a larger role, but due to his declining health he was limited to just a few scenes, and he was sitting the whole time. Hartnell's scenes were the first to be filmed, and he exchanged dialog without either Troughton or Pertwee present. Hartnell's part was edited in later. This was the first acting job Hartnell had in three years due to his illness. After the filming, it was back to his bed where he would linger until his death. The 3rd Doctor is oddly fascinating to me. He's almost so completely different from "The Doctor" that we know from all the other past and future incarnations. So much more physically active and threatening. So somber and introspective. A subtle philosophical character-study of The Doctor's blossoming morality at this point in his life. Growing up from the stern, self-serious original person, to the whimsical, optimistic crusader, to finally this imposing force for objective universal justice. It's with Pertwee The Doctor becomes a father-figure to humanity and its struggle to climb out of the Cold War and into a better age of peace and mutual understanding. At least, to me.

One of the producers got him on a good day, and he was eager to do the role in the special. Then, when they called back, his wife broke the news about his mental and physical health. They rewrote the script and had Hartnell record his part separately. He never got to meet with Troughton and Pertwee.

Watch interviews, behind the scenes, read interviews and the magazine. All the extra stuff on the DVDs. Listen to actors and crew at conventions and panels and on stage. Then through that you have a better understanding.

Jamie doesn't remember his time with the Doctor (thanks to the Time Lords) and wonders two things: why this weirdness isn't as upsetting to him as it is to the other Scots around him, and why this stranger with no name is grinning like a maniac and knows him so well. At that point, it had been roughly 15 years between them getting back to London and Pertwee's exile. They probably would have had a family at that point, raising kids, and the like. I doubt he would want to try and make contact and drag them back into his dangerous life. Not to mention, they had no concept of regeneration. And, let's face it, Ian and Barbara love The Doctor, but not his lifestyle. They spent the entire time trying to get back home. The Doctor knew that, too.
