    Hello, I'm Matt Jasa. If you are interested in learning about Glass blowing or Lamp working my channel offers a lot of advice on the techniques, tools, and general safety. Make Artistic pieces (animals, marbles, pendants), scientific items, and blown functional glass. Put your mind to it and with practice you can make anything!
    Some more specific projects you might find on this channel are Glass Chain Necklaces, Glass Pendants, Marbles, Magnifying Glasses, Glass on Glass Fittings ( GonG ) and Blown Spheres. I also use small explosives from time to time for scientific tests; however these eplosive projects should never be attempted at home, safety is my highest precaution! Never attempt glass blowing without proper ventilation and eye protection.
    Check out my videos on setting up your glass blowing torch along with how to adjust for the right flames; such as neutral, oxidizing and reducing flame before you begin. Learn how to cut, clean and prepare your glass for future projects.
    Never store your propane in-doors, Always keep propane tanks outside! Propane gas is heavier then air, if a leak occurs it will begin to pool and fill a closed room or basement which can lead to an explosion.
    If you have any questions about glass blowing, lamp working, or this video please leave them in the comment section down below. I may not respond immediately as I'm mostly busy in the glass shop but I'll get to it as soon as I can.
    Please join me in this exciting journey to see what can be done with glass. I create these videos to enrich others in the process; teach them to create their own works, but also for everyone else to enjoy the unique perspective and spectacular show that science/nature can provide.
    I put a lot of work and time into each video. Most projects require 1 to 2 hours to complete in the shop and then several more editing the footage while adding voice-over. I've worked on some videos well through the night and into the next morning. So help me bring glass blowing and lamp working to others; please share this video on your social feed, be apart of the awesome journey.
    Remember to turn on notifications for my channel after you subscribe so it alerts you of the next video.

      Your welcome Violent Vegan. This one does take some patience. A full chain might take 4 to 5 hours. It's also easy to make a mistake and break it. Remember you don't lose that practice even if it breaks, the experience stays with you.

      Lol I started making em and I'm actually pretty good at it I've made about 6 so far and sold 2 of em already and got an order for 10. 😊 thanks for the help, also something I started doing is rubber banding the second link to the punty (so it stays still and doesnt drop in the heat) and when the chain gets long I carabiner the end into a bracelet so I don't have to hold it

      Very cool Dawson! You'll get a lot of attention with a glass chain. You can take it another level and do different colors or add a small pedant with links in the middle. Let me know how it's going.

    Thank's Matt. My questions about how Boro Chain is created have been answered! And Wow! That is a beautiful chain, and love the one you are wearing. Which glass is that? This is a lot of work to do, and definitely requires skill. And now I think that the prices I've seen for them are too low! Looking forward to watching your other videos! Great Job!

      Hi Nina! It does take a lot of practice, but its very rewarding to shape your ideas in glass even if the profits aren't. The green chain was from an experimental batch of green from Glass Alchemy, but 'Green Stardust' from TAG would be a good choice to make a green chain. Thanks for the great comment and watching the show! Stay melty!

    Hi Matt very great videos you are helping beinginers all over the world 🌎 ! Heaven awaits you 😇 so I read allot of comments and I 2 am having the same problem with everything cracking. It always happens after my third link, I tried waiting 5 min before adding new links I even started making single open link wil waiting. But sill it always seems to crack crazy frustrating. Any thoughts?

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  2 роки тому

      Hey Justin, I believe this is one of the more challenging projects for a beginner. Each link will retain stress from where it was warmed and cooled. It takes a lot of patience to keep the heat off the old links. You could try using a thinner rod as thicker ones may retain more stress. I believe you'll get it in time, consider working on another glass project and come back to glass chain later.

    Hey Matt! Got a question, so I’m making one of these necklaces now and when I put it all into the kiln, one of the colder links will crack. Any suggestions? I’ve tried warming it all up then fixing it but it still cracked after annealing.

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  Рік тому +1

      Hey Gabe, there's thermal stress left over from the bending, so reheating any cold links might cause them to crack. Did you set the chain in a cold kiln and ramp up the temperature? That is what I did, I never set it in a hot kiln. Also, you might be able to anneal the open links before you assemble the chain, bend #1 and the punty attachment are contributing factors to the stress.
      Lastly this is one of the hardest challenges that most of my students eventually face. Symbolic to scaling a treacherous mountain to retrieve a flag as indication of your abilities, but here it's a glass artifact to wear proudly. Best of luck on your glass journey Gabe!

    OK Matt I have a question for you if I’m working with only clear glass Well I have a problem with cracking cooling it down without a kiln since it’s only one color because I notice you’re not putting any of that work in the kiln to keep it hot while you still are going on other pieces

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Mike, the faster the glass cools down the more destructive it will be. As your cooling down your work without the kiln try flashing some heat into the outside to slow down heat loss. It's also good to avoid touching hot glass to anything cold like graphite, metal, or cold glass.
      For Glass-Chain I let each link cool almost completely before attaching another. I edited out those 'cooling periods' from the video or else it would be a couple hours long.
      There can be some other factors such as glass thickness and shape of the object. An object with a lot of edges or small points attached might cool off unevenly.

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  5 років тому +1

      A lot of people prefer an in-person instructor to teach them while others prefer to teach themselves using videos like this. That's how I started, watching/learning everything I could while I saved for my first torch. It takes a little bit of money and a location to set up your torch. But once you get started its Practice, Practice, Practice like a music instrument. Check out some of my other videos to see if your interested in trying it out yourself.

    Hey Matt! I've been working on trying to make a chain, but I keep running into cracking problems. When I bench cool my links, they crack eventually as I work on the chain. I've been sticking the whole thing into the annealer between putting links on (I've also been making the links one at a time because of the same cracking problem) I'm using 8mm clear. What am I doing wrong and what can I do better? I'd like to start premaking the links like you do. I feel like I'm wasting a lot of time lol.

    • @kamaji666
      @kamaji666 4 роки тому

      Should I try flashing the links in the propane flame when I'm pre-fabricating the links? They cool down fine, but when I start adding more links, the previous ones will crack

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  4 роки тому +1

      @@kamaji666 Hey Kyle, awesome to hear your working on chains, sorry your having some trouble.
      It sounds like your previous links are getting too hot while your finishing your current link They might be soaking in some torch heat or hot glass heat. After I close each link I give it a full minute or two to return back to room temperature before I add the next link.
      Don't worry about mistakes, any time spent on the torch is practice, so its never wasted.

    • @kamaji666

      Thank you for the quick response! You're right, it's all practice. It gets frustrating at times, but that's the game! I definitely haven't been giving it enough time to cool down. Once the links were fabricated, I was just going at it. I'll have to give that a try. Constantly taking it in and out of the annealer was not the right way and I knew that lol.
      It's only my second week on the torch, this has been a great learning exercise! Thanks!
