Ryan. There really are only 4 channels that I watch on a regular basis. Yours is not only one of them, but the one I wake up to on a Saturday morning with a smile knowing you will be there to enjoy over a nice hot cup of coffee. You make me laugh consistently in every one of them and while I probably enjoy the building videos more on the whole, I still enjoy the more off topic spots. Can't wait to see your new dog and the relationship that grows from there and I have no doubt that your best friend is just around the corner. Thank you for taking the time to make us laugh each and every week. It really means a lot.

Hey Ryan, what you’re doing is amazing. I think most of us know by now you’re understated in all of your explanations. It’s clear you have a passion and eye for photography, design, and some incredible chainsaw skills. And your humor and camera presence is incredible.
I knew from that first $20 you would excel. I’m in this for the long haul, so you can count on that support. I bet there’s a lot more of us out there that will find you in time.
Final note: our video today is on milling. We didn’t it the easy way with a mill. Wow, it’s a lot of work. And not just cutting, but all the time moving logs, stacking, moving stacks, and disposing the unusable bits. Makes us respect what you’re doing even more. Thank you! Please keep forging forward.

I think another reason why your channel is successful is because each video has the same pleasing aesthetic look to it. We always know we're going to get great shots of scenery and beautiful wood grains (for those of us who appreciate the beauty of wood and the woods.) Love it.

I love your honesty, skills, hard work, love of nature and just about everything you present for us to watch. Your content has improved by leaps and bounds but your hard work makes for the best videos for me. Seeing the end result of your skill and artistic talent must be satisfying for you as well as your viewers. Continue enjoying what you do and may it involve your finances improving so you can access new equipment (like your Microscopes).

I've been doing photography for over 37 years full time and as a business. I started doing UA-cam as much for the fun as anything. Just about every video I do someone who probably lives in their parents basement has to criticize my video or what I say in them. I always try and be polite but 90% of the time they come back with insults and foul language so I delete the comments. You can't fix stupid!

Wow, what a terrific summary for your startup and candid thoughts. I will share this with a couple friends that are interested in the opportunity. Glad to see that you are taking care of yourself, chilling in the heat, napping through the worst weather and enjoying your chosen life. Wishing you and your lady a blessed week, gentle weather and restful evenings. Peace Ryan.

I just want to let you know, I’m 78 years old. I have two kids and each one has two kids. I have already added your videos to my list of videos I want my grand kids to watch to learn things about life from. Todays video is the first one I’ve seen with honest talk about making a living by making UA-cam videos. Thanks for doing this. The other part I appreciated is the mental handling of the negative comments you receive every day. We all have to learn to live with criticism. We all have to learn about consequences and taking responsibility for what we say and how we say it. I have a lot of respect for you. Thank you for being you.

Another hint for being successful. It hits close to where you talked about trolls... When I first watched, I thought this was interesting. But that it probably wouldn't be interesting enough to keep my attention for that long. Still, I subscribed so I could keep up. Then I kind of got hooked. LOL
But what really sealed the deal, was the way you handled my first few comments. See, I truly want to be helpful. But I don't think I have the best communication skills. So, much of the time what I initially say probably comes across sounding like a troll, or a know it all, or something of that sort. (Maybe more than just initially. LOL) Especially if someone is 'looking' for that kind of behavior. (Many 'channel mods', ARE. Jus sayin...)
I asked prying questions, and I made suggestions, because I really wanted to help you to figure things out. At least as much help as a 'comment section' can offer. LOL But I KNOW I looked like a troll. Just couldn't help that. Had no way of figuring out how to change that.
Thing is, you seemed to understand that. And better than that, you took the comments, and guided the conversation. It's obvious that I would not do things the same way that you would. So you expertly deflected what would not work for you, and put a few things, (suggestions), in the toolbag, so to speak. So you might put them to use later, or modify the suggestions, etc.
Point is, you didn't take a troll at face value. You paid attention. Sussed out the intent, and worked with it. And you do this with all the commenters. I think a LARGE part of any successful channel is a willingness to at least try to make a family out of the comments section. Eat the meat, spit out the bones. People begin to feel like part of the family. They WANT to come back. And they bring others because they tell others about the channel.
I'm sorry for the novella of a post. Too many variables to try to explain, and this IS the 'boiled down' version. LOL

Ryan, special thank you for sharing the UA-cam production experience with us. We had a cabin on a lake that I helped build when I was a boy. I enjoy your completely self reliant cabin in the pines formation reports and remember my own experiences of yesteryear. We have a 12 acre tract on a creek in an adjoining rural county and I am thinking about building a little cabin with less than 200 sqft of floor space much like yours, but with kiln dried lumber. Please keep sharing your experience. It was great to hear that basically, you are just out there having fun, the videos are not the goal. The goal is fun and the videos are another part of that fun. Carry on!!!

It’s nice to hear that you grew during your UA-cam journey. I obviously have a LONG way to go before I can get to your quality of videos but I feel like I’m learning a lot from every video that I make just like you talked about in this video. I really like your content and the honesty about the nuts and bolts of it all. I take pictures and have forever but I have been encouraged by friends to video what I am doing and upload the videos to FB or UA-cam to document my efforts. I definitely agree about the concept of already having a passion subject to document, rather than "creating a subject just to video" and so that is cool! I am sure many people are appreciative of what you do. That is why it comes across as natural - because it is. Keep it up! Looking forward to watching this channel, for sure.

I was in youtube for a few years when it was totally unpaid. I just did it for fun. Then they started a "partnership" program and you could apply to be a partner.
Gun channels were some of the first large partner channels before youtube went anti gun.
I used to get a few troll comments, but I either ignore them or reply with an even more absurd response and the trolls just gave up and move along.

I've moved out of the burbs of Charlotte NC, into the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky and am doing a lot of the same type of work. I want my family to see what Im doing and why Im always working so a UA-cam Channel seems like a no-brainer for keeping them up to speed. Your video today has helped me come to the decision of moving forward with this idea. The only question I have is - have you considered Live Steaming Q&A sessions for your friends, family, and/or viewers? Thanks for sharing your life. Im enjoying your videos!

I've been thinking about starting a channel. I'm a disabled veteran. I've already bought ocean shore property in southern Alaska, I'm currently renovating my home to then sell. I looked online and found the GoPro's reviews are more bad than good. I'm waiting to receive the "snapshot" camera I bought. So I plan to start low budget. Film the building of the new 16x20 pool shed, painting the pool, new installation of house windows, insulation, wiring, plumbing etc. When done and sold.....the "Alaskan adventure" begins .
Thanks for the info on the devinchi resolve software. I'll get a laptop that's easily compatible. The one I have is a lot like me.. Old and in the way.
    Like your channel 👍

After watching this…watching this knucklehead make videos….I’m going to start filming again.
iMovie is a great editing program for beginners if you have access to the Mac platform. I bought a GoPro for the ease of use and everyone commented how good the video quality was. Epidemic sound is a great program to use for music at a low cost.
All in all….it’s a lot of fun. I had never really recorded anything and certainly never edited anything until I filmed my first video. It’s a lot of fun filming and editing.
I’ll have a new one out soon!

Shows more of the process, a lot more commentary along the way and the overall quality is much better. Still, I've enjoyed all the ones I've seen so far. I found you while looking at chainsaw milling, but I've stuck around for all the things you have built. I have land and a forest, and want to build things for/with my grandsons. lol About 90 seconds before you said "Don't do this for the money." was an ad exclaiming how much money I could make on UA-cam ... Irony is brain candy for sure!

Funny, I started watching your channel because I was looking for a chainsaw mill. I wanted to see your rig and how it works. I got hooked, your way you include us in your vids, joking like we're there with you.

Thanks for this video. I’ve asked a couple other creators to do some videos on how to start and never got a response that was positive.
