Either I don't get or I don't give a damn, but my parents didn't like the movie because there was no real plot to it. Please explain why they're wrong.
WWhiteSShadow are you serious man? of course theres a plot - the fluid was supposed to save them from extinction - and on their home planet. Wikus feels like what it is to be a prawn - to be discriminated and prejuidced. It is comparing the lives of prawns in the slums to the treatment of blacks in the apartheid era. People will claim that there is black in this movie who are not being discriminated - this is because it is likening the Afrikaans (Wikus) and their relationship with the British, who invaded a long time ago. If you want to understand it more, read the Themes section of the Wikipedia District 9 page
Actually while we owned South Africa as a colony, it was way better off than what it was before. Yes, there was discrimination, but it actually became significantly worse after South Africa became independent, and before we """"invaded"""", as you put it (colonisation is different to invasion you mug), black people were kept as slaves rather than being segregated.
the reason why the ending is so poignant is that the character of Wikus is elevated to an almost biblical figure. He is condemned, his transformation into a prawn is a life sentence and he struggles to hang on to his old life and world. He is desperate and willing to pay any price to rejoin a world and a life that are themselves ugly, a life where he ultimately meant little as a multinational stooge, where his colleagues ultimately betray him and ignore his pleas for help, where his wife abandons him, where his father in law has sold him off for profit and he is still so desperate to cling on to it all that he acts reprehensibly, tormenting, knocking out and abandoning Christopher to a certain death with Koobus only to save himself. In the end, Wikus sees his own moral dillema and decides to sacrifice himself, using his own body as a shield in order to give Christopher a chance to escape with his son and in the process, maintain a very faint hope that he might himself be saved. Yes it's sci-fi, but it's an age-old tale of fate, betrayal, redemption and hope that could have been pulled out of the old testament. It's a shame the Oscar's couldn't see how grandiose this movie is, especially compared to the mega budget roller coaster ADHD nonsense Hollywood/Marvel force feeds us today.
Beautifully stated, this movie had so much heart and weight to it. Even after a decade, I’m blown away by every step this movie takes. Literally one of the best and original movies ever made in history.
Yes! Thank you for this analysis - this movie is amazing and demonstrates how incredible and moving science fiction can be if taken seriously. Ill never forget the sympathy I felt for the Prawn character (Christoper?) when they entered the lab and he saw his people butchered and used as lab rats. The escape from the facility and final battle all the more dramatically powerful. If ever there was a SciFi film deserving of an Oscar it was District 9. The soundtrack is also incredible!
He's actually going to make the movie! He's just waiting for the right time. I read it in an article! Don't worry man, it's going to happen. We just gotta be patient.
it's true, but in this movie, I kinda really want a sequel... just no shitty one... it's like transformers, I only accept the first one as a movie, the other ones I simply ignore... so I could cope with the sequel being bad... since I absolutely love District 9.
How come "District 10"? Why that tittle? District 9 was camp that is located outside of Johannesburg. That means that "District 10" will be another camp. I don't want a sequel with another camp in it. They better come up with some better name for the movie if they ever make one.
Actually, the film is showing you that they move the shrimps away from Johannesburg, Wikus included, they got to a new campsite, called District 10 (where we see fully transformed Wikus in the end).
+RX7821979 It got nominated for one...by the way not all great things are always rewarded..and most importantly that doesn't degrade their value. It is just a great creation !!!

I don't think his wife really betrayed him Imo. His wife was used by her father to track Wikus and we still see that she stills misses him even after everything
I cried my eyes out during the whole ending of this movie. a truly hope that there's gonna be a sequel. and Chappie...I cried throughout the whole movie, didn't go a single second without crying 😢
Vocals at 0:08- 1:41, always brings me to tears and will have me thinking about Nature, Grace, God, The Universe, Suffering, Life, Death, Light, Darkness, Love, Hate, Faith, and Hope, This song is a philosophical piece, Love this movie, it teaches us that even when we become less human, we have the potential to show more humanity
I was sorely disappointed in Elysium, because district 9 was so competent, and the dialogue, characters, and plot of Elysium made my eyes roll so much that my wife thought I was having a seizure.
I hope his next movie will be as great as Distric 9 :) I thought Elysium was okay movie, entertaining and all but District 9 was just something else, a brilliant movie which will remain as one of my favorites to rewatch every few years.
This movie is amazing. Elysium is amazing. Chappie is amazing. This director is becoming a new favorite of mine, despite how violent, gory, and filthy his films are.
I feel that he may be going downhill, he might fall into the "M.Night curse" but idk.. Im a huge fan of his films, especially District 9 and Elysium , havent seen Chappie though
Geek97 Might be true. Shyamalan (sp?) had one great film, a few good films, and tons of crap films. He has some good ideas, just as the director of District 9 has some great ideas. But simple things like casting choice, twist endings, or even plot details might be enough to turn people off from these films. So I will continue to be optimistic, but seeing how Chappie was technically a box office bomb and has low ratings (despite the fact that I love the film to death), it may get better or worse. We don't know what exactly went wrong. Maybe the director should just go back to another District 9 film instead of trying to make a new Alien film to try to earn his credibility back.

Best part is from 0:00 to 1:25 I always end up in tears, it makes me think of the ending which is so sad, but also makes me think about, the world, God, life, my family and how its been torn apart so years. I cry so hard when thinking about all these things, and this song triggers those emotions everytime. Thank you District 9. One of my top 50 films of all my time, and I put this at number 3!
Killa K2death I agree. this song stirs up so much emotions within me. I think about the ending of this moving, about Christopher and his adorable son who dreamed of one day seeing his world. I think about the evil things humans did to these aliens who simply wanted to go home, and the evil intent that humans had with their weapons. then I think about all the evil in this world at the cause of human hands. its truly sad

They're both equally great, I have watched Avatar several times and always grasp some new realization from it. I could watch both movies a thousand times.
I saw this movie for the first time yesterday and I can't get it out of my mind, I don't think I ever will. It made me cry a lot and think a lot about what kind of creatures we humans are. Waiting for the return of Christopher Johnson. Meanwhile Im pretty sure I'll re-watch this movie a couple times more. Btw, this song is SO freaking beautiful!
Wow 5:00-6:18 was so beautiful. What an epic score. Wikus "Listen, you go ahead. You can make it.I'm gonna just hold him off here and i'll join you soon." Christopher "No, we stick together. I'm not leaving you here." Wikus "Take your boy and go home. You have to make it. Don't make me go through this and not make it. Understand?" Christopher "I will come back for you. Three years, I promise.".
The movie is a phenomenal masterpiece. OST is deep and very emotional. The movie itself promotes deep thinking about humanity as a whole, what we can do for money and power. We are little cruel children who still are not grown up enough to understand the true value of life.
District 9 is pure genius it became an instant cult classic the moment released. This is the most original film I have ever seen. Neil Blomkamp is amazing and his direction for films is perfect. Everything about District 9 "Amazing" one of the best Sci-fi flicks ever !
This is quite possibly one of the most under-rated, high quality films I've seen in some time. the soundtrack and the emotion evoked from your empathy for "aliens" and the plight derived from all characters was something you didn't really hear about when this film was advertised. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite movies of all time... the soundtrack? don't even get me started... Clinton Shorter hit the nail on the head for perfecting the score to the raw emotion the film portrayed.
District 9 was such an Underrated Movie in All Aspects, the Music, the Suspense, the Emotions and the Action. This movie was Well Done. Neil Blomkamp doesnt need Aliens or Halo…District 10 can be surpass any of those movies, there so many directions it can go…Neil this is your Holy Grail!
This movie is a masterpiece. What happen is the movie is something that could really happen, especially the seek for military, the seek toward power by humans being.
One of those film scores that's just extremely magnetizing....brilliant. And that African singing..i dont know where could i hear more of that, i always find it beautiful..Best to try Folk African Music maybe! His voice is clear!
I always break down when Wickus goes back to save Christopher. He has that line about 'you take your boy and go home'. One of the best character redemptions I've ever seen. Has me in tears no matter how many times I watch it. And then the alien Wickus holding up the flower.
I was in school when this movie came out. At that time I felt so disconnected and alienation from my surrounding. Then I saw this movie and the ending where he makes a metal flower 🌹 made me feel sense of belonging. I related to the character deeply
I'v watched this movie every day for 3 years straight when it was released. Thats over 1050 times. EVERY SINGLE DAY. I need the sequel to be atleast half as good as this and im happy.
It's so hard to top this film, but Elysium was good. I enjoyed it a lot, and you really can't compare the two movies. District 9 though, holy crap, what an absolute masterpiece.
I remember this was playing on my television while I was reading Ikemefuna's death in Things Fall Apart. Something that will definitely stick with me for the rest of my life.
5:00 fav part. it just makes me think about life. my past the pressent the future. the good times the bad times. ppl that have come and gone. the things i have seen, watched, participated in. the fact we live on a planet that supposedly is one of the only ones that supports LIFE. whenever you're feeling sad, down, just remeber you are here for a reason. and you beat all the other sperm in the race for a chance at living. you were first.
mexican whiteboy Es una lástima qué todo eso qué dices, aquí no sea verdad :/ México es una cementerio enorme de muerte, desigualdad, pobreza y corrupción.
I don't know why I always cry listening to this music and watching that giant alien ship stranded in SA. It's such a beautiful feeling I can't help but cry.
This was the only song on my crappy mp3 device when I traveled through Asia. Listened to it hundreds of times, seriously, on 28 hour bus rides and i can still listen to it now and smile.
I don't often comment, but I really love this film. It portray's a very realistic reaction from humans, people say we would panic, but we're more advanced than that and we do try to help if something crashes but the experimentation as well and the fear of the 'prawns' because they're different. The soundtrack just makes the whole movie!
I love it, because when we imagine an alien invasion , we imagine ourselfves dominated by the aliens, but that is a more realistic idea, and that didn't happened in america, more real XD
This film truly deserves a lot of respect, despite if you enjoyed it or not. Not only does it a deliver an amazing and emotional story that hints at South Africa's difficult past. But we have to remember that this was Neil Blomkamps FIRST feature film and was nominated for several awards including best picture. For an amateur director to get a nominated for the highest award in movie making is unheard of. Well done Neil, well done.
This film will always have a special place in my heart.
hehe me too :(

They're both equally great, I have watched Avatar several times and always grasp some new realization from it. I could watch both movies a thousand times.
Oh yeah, I just re-watched them not long ago, Avatar is not bad but, District 9 shits on it.

Tired of movies with love stories
I saw this movie for the first time yesterday and I can't get it out of my mind, I don't think I ever will. It made me cry a lot and think a lot about what kind of creatures we humans are. Waiting for the return of Christopher Johnson. Meanwhile Im pretty sure I'll re-watch this movie a couple times more.
Btw, this song is SO freaking beautiful!
OMG... Me too
This comment is 9 years old... OMG🙃😅
best movie ever, I have watch it maybe ten or fifteen times and soundtrack is super nice
This song was made in Heaven.
This piece has a certain unsettlement and urgency which make it unheavenly.

No, Heaven is far beyond you can imagine i think, sorry for my english.
It's 2020 and I will never forget what a wonderful movie this was, I would still wait for a sequel if there would be any u_u
It was annouced that the writer got the funds and started finishing district 10
This is quite possibly one of the most under-rated, high quality films I've seen in some time. the soundtrack and the emotion evoked from your empathy for "aliens" and the plight derived from all characters was something you didn't really hear about when this film was advertised. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite movies of all time... the soundtrack? don't even get me started... Clinton Shorter hit the nail on the head for perfecting the score to the raw emotion the film portrayed.
"I never had any pornographic activities with a F'in creature maaan!"
LMAO ... Best line hands down! Thumbs Up!

1:26 = chills, chills and chills.
DISTRICT 9.... THE BEST!!!
God this movie is so great! I can't wait for Chappie. That looks great!
El director de chapi, elysium y sector 9 es un capo, pone mucho esfuerzo en cada una de las películas
This movie is a masterpiece. What happen is the movie is something that could really happen, especially the seek for military, the seek toward power by humans being.
Use me as the:
I have come back yet again to cry like a baby internally at this beautiful piece of music.
the best movie and song je t'aime ce merveilleux filme
District 9 is definitely on my list of the best movies I've ever seen. I want to see more Blomkamp.
Just saw the movie again after a few years....one of the best! Music melts my heart!
I don't believe you. This is not possible.
Una joya del cine... buenisima en todo aspecto. Y Vickus aun espera haciendo flores ..
Humanity one of the dangerous species….
It's so hard to top this film, but Elysium was good. I enjoyed it a lot, and you really can't compare the two movies.
District 9 though, holy crap, what an absolute masterpiece.
This alien movie 👽 fascinated me when i watched it for the first time in 2010. Such an underrated movie
Who’s listening to this in 2022!?!?
Cette musique m'aura fait pleurer. Une musique magnifique pour un film génial :)
this movie made me cry a lot XD
Cuando volverás Christopher Johnson ya han pasado 12 años 😔
Me too 2023 he's will come back
Amazing movie, my favorite
I really want a Distric 10
Me too mate :(
*we*
I remember this was playing on my television while I was reading Ikemefuna's death in Things Fall Apart.
By all odds, this place and you exist
I don't know why I always cry listening to this music and watching that giant alien ship stranded in SA. It's such a beautiful feeling I can't help but cry.
It would be great if they made a new one but I king of like how they ended the way they did so if a sequel isn't made it's still good.
Thane, I thought you couldn't make it to sequels since you have that dying sendrome..
Yea I think if it happens district 10 would be an invasion and they Christopher would tell his people on his planet what really happened
Love the beginning of this song
Epic soundtrack
Super super superbb movie District 9. Love to watch the sequel..
0:09 Eargasm
iooooaaaaaeeeeooooaaaaaa
This was the only song on my crappy mp3 device when I traveled through Asia. Listened to it hundreds of times, seriously, on 28 hour bus rides and i can still listen to it now and smile.
Hmmmm best of best moviee....
Loved it....
Watched over 5times and still wanna watch it...... Hmmmm
yeah like me
I don't often comment, but I really love this film. It portray's a very realistic reaction from humans, people say we would panic, but we're more advanced than that and we do try to help if something crashes but the experimentation as well and the fear of the 'prawns' because they're different.
The soundtrack just makes the whole movie!
2009 was a great year for the sci-fi genre: Avatar and District 9, this (District 9) has an emotional, moving and powerful soundtrack.
true
This movie has everything, a true masterpiece. Great main character, great debuting (!) actor to perform his role (Sharlto
Man this is one of the movies that hit your soul
An outstanding and moving soundtrack to an even more intriguing film...Whew, I hope there's a sequel!
I cry :'(
Man of two worlds.
Great theme song for the movie
