China's Tulous: Life inside an ancient Chinese fortress
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- This week we visited one of the most picturesque and interesting villages we've been to in China. We headed down to Fujian to see the famous 'Tulous' which are ancient Chinese fortresses built by the Hakka people.
Not only did we see some of the most amazing pieces of architecture in these round house buildings but we learnt about the local culture and we we stayed inside one to really experience life here.

Happy birthday Nico 🎂💐🎉 I'm happy you're celebrating birthday among the Hakka people, I'm one of them. My ancestors left Fujuan for Guangdong in the 13th century to escape the Mongol invasion over China. They settled down in Mexian, a remote area In the north east of Guangdong province. In the early 20th century, my grandpa and his first wife left again Mexian for a small French island in the middle of Indian Ocean, la Réunion! I'm currently living in Paris.
Thank you! Oh wow that is so interesting thanks for sharing your story. It was really interesting to learn more about Hakka culture and hopefully share more in our video next week too!
Hak is guest ka is family. Hakkas moved around quite a bit back in the days because of war, or whatever.
Dear, I think you meant Meixian, lmao

Wow, Happy Birthday Nico. 🎂🎂🎂 What a wonderful slice of tulou life!!! Love the view from the top scenic spot and the rising of the morning sun. Such great photography and Jack is honing his skills to be one of the legendary photographers like Ansel Adams of Yosemite fame. In Jack's case it will be the Chinese photographer of path less travel photographer of China.🌹🌹🌹
Oh thank you very much I will let him know that is very kind of you. Yeah it was the perfect place to spend the morning.

Happy Birthday Nico!
Thank you!
Awww, I just saw this video so it's probably too late to say "happy birthday" to Nico! However, I hope you had a great time in Fujian, my hometown, despite the hot and humid weather and the annoying mosquitos. I'm a bit embarrassed that as Fujianese I haven't visited Tulou before, but thanks to your amazing video the countryside appears more picturesque than it may look in real (I can't stand mosquito, too). Wish you return to China and even Fujian sometime in future!
👍超棒的视频!非常美!~看完又想去土楼玩了!~~😄生日快乐~!!
Great way to celebrate you birthday👍👍👍👍
happy birthday Nico , I'm hakkas, give a like both in bilibili and UA-cam
Thanks for the double like! I'm so happy to learn more about Hakka culture!
Wow you are teaching about Chinese culture many chinnese probably don't even know. Good job!
Thanks for sharing your fun and forwarding to Share with my thousand friends in Linkedin,
Thank you so much I'm pleased you enjoyed it and we always appreciate a share! ☺
If summer heat in southern China is too much to bear, then go during spring, autumn or winter months, the weather is cool and nice.
Another great video! 😊
Thank you very much I’m pleased you enjoyed it!
很优秀的节目,再接再厉
Out of all of your vlogs, I have to say I loved this one the most. The village life looks so peaceful and serene. Plus the tulous reminded me of a fight scene in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Hope you guys can make more of village-life vlogs. And Happy Birthday Nico!
Thank you very much I think this is one of our favourites too! We actually visited one of the villages from Crouching Tiger it is a place called Hongcun in Anhui we went there last year. I hope so too these are the places which will be in our memories forever.
AWESOME!
Great
Happy birthday Nico 🎂
Thanks a lot!
Yessss I loved this video. Jack's videography skills are unmatched and Nico did amazing as usual at keeping us engaged whilst teaching us loads of good stuff!! I hope your day is full of everything beautiful. P.s, anywhere that makes nap time a part of everyday life is my kind of place. 🎂🎉🌿👑😴
Aww thank you very much that is so kind! haha I know I love a scheduled nap time in the day!
Aww thank you very much that is so kind! haha I know I love a scheduled nap time in the day!

Welcome to Fujian province! 😄

Wow you guys are good at this!
Thank you very much!
What a wonderful video! Thank you! My family is from Fujian (Fu qin) and I've really enjoyed learning about other aspects of Fujian. Whenever we go back to visit my grandparents who live in a small village, I always feel healthier because we sleep and wake early, walk everywhere and eat lots of fresh produce 😄
Glad you enjoyed it! I felt like that too it is such a lovely place I hope we get the chance to explore more of it someday.
这段视频拍得太精彩了,人文与风景完美融合在一起
Thank you very much!
It's nice to see so many kids living in there.

hahaha yeah they just love me they do! Thank you!!
非常赞的地方!感谢
So beautiful!
Happy belated Birthday Nico :)
Nice video
A 1st class video made with hearts ❤️
Being a Hakka person myself, I love to visit Fujian where my ancestors once lived, once the pandemic border control is lifted.
Happy Birthday Nico 🎊🎂🎉
I am a Hakka person too. My parents and grandparents and their parents parents are from Huadu district in Guandong Province. How far is that from Fujian?
@@josechong8207 oh hi, I think I spoke to u before, in another post!
Huadu is in Guangzhou, from my research, it takes about 6 hours from Guangzhou train station to the where the Tolou is by the high speed train 🙂
It's about 560 km apart!
Thank you so much I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Thats amazing, next week we will talk more about the history so hopefully you can help us out with any information we miss in the comments to let people know more about Hakka culture. I hope you get the chance to visit soon.
@@Nicofilms Thank you Nico for your reply. I love your video and very much look forward to your next video on the history of the Tolou. I don't know much about the Hakka culture in Fujian as our culture does vary a bit regionally. My 'direct' ancestor left Huizhou ( 惠州)about 3 hundred years for Hong Kong, where I am residing now. We found out through our clan"s archive ( 族譜)that our ancestors lived in Fujian before moving to Huizhou, but it did not mention the exact location. I guess it's around the Tolou area. Can't wait to see your next video 🙂!
Have you considered coming to Hong Kong one day? The Hakka culture here will be an interesting topic to explore. Will treat u an authentic Hakka meal if u do come here 🙂
Thanks! this one is for jack. love from canada.
Aw thank you very much! I will tell him.
Thanks so much! Gonna go grab an iced coffee now, cheers! Jack
Amazing documentary😘
Thank you!
It brings back memories of my visit there, before the covid absurdities, such as testing the fish in Xiamen for covid. China will take a long time, if ever, to recover their society and culture. Interesting that there is no testing in the tulous. No way everyone is going to the town every 48 hours.
@@myleshagar9722 I agree. Excessive anti-Covid is becoming political correctness in China.
Starting to feel like Jack's Chinese/Mandarin speaking ability is too overlooked, it really allows you guys to understand what the locals are ACTUALLY saying. A lot of things are often miscommunicated or misunderstood through translation, but when you speak the language it lowers that error margin way down. Even though Jack's Chinese isn't quite local level yet, it still significantly improves the accuracy of understanding what people were saying.
Thanks a lot, he's been working really hard! The difficult thing in rural place like this is a lot of the older generation don't actually speak much Mandarin so it can still be hard to communicate if you aren't from the area.
His Chinese is perfect
Happy birthday, Nico!
Thanks a lot!
Love this ❤️
the content, editing and connections of the Nico and Jack and the subjects in their vidoe is just another level. So good. You guys are my fav Brits.
Ahhh thank you very much!
Yet another among the best of the best from you guys. I'd purposely miss any nat geo documenrary for this.
Looking forward to the next part.
Oh, happy birthday Nico.
Aww thank you so much! I'm pleased you think so this was one of our favourites to make.
Wow what an experience!
It certainly was!
Happy birthday Nico 🎂🍾️🎉! . My grandparents were Hakka people and i can speak Hakka too and i’m now living in London. Thanks for sharing your tulou experience, it’s so awesome and captivating.
Sorry it's late but Happy birthday Nico!
Very interesting indeed... Can't wait for the next episode.
Thank you so much! Tune in the same time next week!
Happy Sweet 16th Birthday, Nico! You are forever young! Thanks, Jack and Nico for this gem video.
haha thank you very much you are too kind!
This video is so healing to watch. Thank you for yet another piece of great work!
Thank you very much I'm pleased you think so!
Very nice videographed. Finally there's decent content creator who actually shot good images/life vlogs in China! Keep it going!
what a deep authentic experience!
Thanks a lot, it really was!
Thanks the great video. Happy birthday!
I'm pleased you enjoyed it, and thanks a lot!
BBC should definitely use your amazing well-editted video clips for their documentary section!!
Maybe one day we can make a travel show for them!
HBD Nico!
There is an animated movie called Big Fish & Begonia (大鱼海棠) which the scenes are based on the Tulou. It is highly recommended to watch it.
Thanks! happy birthday and more to come. love from canada. btw, i have written down all the info for future reference as i would like to go there too some day😃😃.
Aww thank you so much you are very kind! We really appreciate it. I'm so glad you found it helpful and hope you get the chance to go there one day!
Nico (& Jack) I have missed you both. Seeing this video pop up on my home page made me literally giddy. I really LOVE your content
Awww thank you so much that is so kind! LOVE hearing this haha Yeah we had to take a week off as this ended up being a bit longer than planned but so happy to share it with you all!
@@Nicofilms I would rather you guys take the time you need off rather than not being able to do this for us at all. I can't travel the world right now but you guys sharing China makes me feel like I get to be a part of that adventure.
waiting for the nexe episode, this one is already wonderful.
Thanks a lot! I'm pleased you enjoyed it! See you the same time next week. ☺
What a lovely video, made by two lovely people. Interesting and beautiful! My best wishes from me❤
生日快乐,nico
wow what an amaing video!! love it so much~~
Thank you so much!
amazing!!! And Happy birthday Nico!!!!!! Happy Birthday!!!
Thank you so much 😀
Incredible historical place in Fujian 👍👍👍.
Really is!
Not sure if you can find this on Taobao as it's an Australian product, the Aerogard Tropical Strength Insect Repellent worked like a charm for me when I was travelling in Fujian during summer. I could literally see the insects flying away from me 😂.
OMG I need this SO bad haha, thanks for the recommendation I will take a look!
Jungle formula is also another good one, bought it for Tai O and wasn't bitten once. I'm allergic to mosquitoes I get puss filled blisters! So jungle formula is a go to! Need to buy repellent with at least 40% DEET
@@tobytang3148 Ok thanks for that! Yes that is what I'm like I have such bad reactions so this is super helpful!
Happy Birthday Nico! Hope you guys are having a great time in Fujian!
Thank you very much!
Such a great video, thank you guys 🤗

@@Nicofilms Your welcome Nico😁
Wow, Happy Birthday Nico. 🎂🎂🎂 Thank you guys for this healing video!
Thank you very much! I'm pleased you think so it was just such a nice place to visit and shoot.
Happy birthday Nico.
Thank you!
Thank you for documenting this incredible journey in a Tulou. I am a Hakka person, so it was nice to see what Hakka people lived in for hundreds of years. It was nice to see the dishes you had were very familiar and making sticky rice wine is a tradition of Hakka families.
Thank you so much I'm pleased you enjoyed it and that we could share some of the Hakka culture with our followers. Next week we will speak more about the history so hopefully you can let us know if we did a good job.
That was really an experience for the birthday. Happy birthday Nico.
It certainly was! Thanks a lot!
哈哈哈,我只喜欢城市生活,村庄生活让我感到很不方便,而在城市,出门走几步就有便利店
and great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
REALLY REALLY GREAT GREAT VIDEO!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing ancient building architecture
So cool!
Wow 🤩 Such a beautiful place! Happy belated birthday 🎉
Thank you so much 🤗
Why are you so adorable Nico?😘
Aww thank you that is very kind ☺
We were there in April2019-Anyway, the one we came to for lunch, had a couple of largish rooms, catering for about 10 people, with basic mud brick walls and timber ceilings, with the doors open to let in the light.
The food was OK, boiled mouli, cabbage, chicken and fried sardines, rice etc and was reasonable.
Then we drove on into the mountains, to a square shape tulou building, which was about 350 years old, built on a swamp, which they demonstrated, by getting everyone to jump up and down in the courtyard and you could see the ground moving.
A local tour guide invited us into her home-well on the kitchen on the ground floor where she gave us some samples of dried fruits etc, which she later tried to sell us. We left after that, but maybe some people bought something.
Interesting, thanks for sharing your story! No one mentioned a swamp maybe it was in one of the other villages nearby.
Awesomely beautiful!👍👍👍👍👏👏
- Wishing you a belated Happy Birthday, Nico. 🎂🎂💐💐🌹🌹
Thank you very much!
