after dozens of blogs , videos and even some books , this is the CLEAREST and most digestible explanation ive ever hears of hyperfocal , zone , and pre focus. now i properly understand the three and have a deeper idea of when to utilize each one

That’s so decent of you to say so. You’ve made my day, especially after some nasty comments in recent days. Please do let me know if there are any other topics you’d like me to cover. I would happily do it for you.

I'm masochistic. I use shallow depth of filed with manual lenses and try to focus in real-time

In the old days before auto focus this is how people did it but I think that’s a dying art. Glad you’re keeping it alive!

Thanks for clarifying the difference between zone focusing, pre-focusing, and hyperfocal. I see many photogaphers still making a big confusion among the three techniques.

Appreciate the comment and glad you found it useful. Yes, there's certainly a lot of confusion relating to the various techniques and I try my best to be very precise and untangling a lot of the existing confusion to make it easier to understand.

I learned that from my photography teacher when an uncle gifted me a Yashica 124, which I still use occasionally. I started my photography journey when I was 12 in 1972, yep I am an old fart 😂😂😂😂. Nowadays, I am shooting with my Fujifilm X-E3 and X-T30II, both of them bought seven months ago, so I am learning how to shoot digitally now. But it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks, right? That is why most of my lenses (I am a TTArtesan fan) are manual. Great video; you have great content that I will check later on (medium format). I wish 120 films were cheaper, or I could adapt a digital back to my Yashica 😂😂😂. You earned my subscription; stay safe 🙏.

Thank you so much for the encouraging comment. I have two Yashica MAT 124G cameras, they are GREAT. 120 film isn't cheap but I like it that way so I think more carefully about every shot and don't waste film. I see digital photographers these days blasting away at 30 frames a second and I think it's just a bit silly. The Fujis are great - I have an X100F, which I love. If you need a medium format camera with a digital back, check out the Hasselblad 907X and the CFV II 50C digital back, but you may need to sell your home to pay for it, lol.

This video is excellent for digital users with automatic ISO, not so much for film users with fixed film speeds. Am I wrong/missing the point?

So I'm a zone focuser for pretty much 95% of the time. Basically you're turning your camera into a point and shoot camera so you can focus 100% on the images you're taking rather than settings. Once you get used to it then you start changing the focal length while you're on the move and see moments about to happen. Great video!

Thanks Craig, yes, your street photos have certainly improved after you worked out the focusing. Also good to see you keeping up the momentum continuously! And yes, I forgot to mention you can constantly change the zone of focus as conditions change, for example, as you enter a more crowded place or a less crowded area.

When I use a manual focus lens on my R7 I sometimes use zone focus or pre-focus etc. But the rest of the time, the AF is so fast and so good, I don’t even think about it. You get it set up, put it in a custom mode, map some buttons- and what you need is there instantly and it just works. Took some re-learning from what I did in DSLR days, but I really like this aspect of mirrorless.

Yes, DSLRs seem to be becoming obsolete now that the mirrorless cameras are becoming so advanced as well as having a size / weight advantage. I prefer not to have half my suitcase taken up by my DSLR and a few lenses.
